The main benefit of the expensive rigs is consistency for people who are doing major jobs daily. Saving 30 seconds making minor adjustments isn't a big deal when welding one hook to a bucket but across 150 welds that's a lot of lost time. It's kind of like people buying trucks based on capability they never use.
I'm also a firm believer of learning on a cheap welder like I did. Like he said you learn to get a feel for how the weld is acting as opposed to trusting the numbers.

Having been a certified aircraft welder and a millwright having a higher end welder will make a difference. Yes each machine is different and will have to be adjusted for each job potentially. Higher duty cycle, constant voltage and amperage is needed. Keep your welding rods as dry ass possible. His rod holder is pretty good as long as you keep the lid tight.

If you decide to put a lifting point on another bucket you should weld on a D ring. You get a bit more versatility that way to use straps and shackles without chain. You do hear it flapping when your digging sometimes tho.

I've been procrastinating with this exact project on my own mini. You will quickly learn how useful this hook will be. Tensioning fence, lifting heavy, cumbersome objects, yanking stuck vehicles out and countless other uses. Your neighbor did a nice job on that weld. I'm no pro welder, but it sure looks like he had excellent penetration.

It's good to have a willing neighbor with a portable rig. He's done a couple of good mods for you.👍

I do the same thing for my welding set up, I have a 9500/7000 generator and run a Mig box. I used it to build my fence and entry way. I saved so much $$$ by doing it myself.

Your Neighbor is a practical and skilled welder. A good Welder understands importance of the metallurgy and less about the cosmetics of welding.

    • @petersipp5247
      @petersipp5247 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I like your remark about a good weldor...(weldor is the human...welder is the machine)...understanding the make up of the material...(metallurgy) is so important.
I can't agree on the cosmetics part of your comment though. The completed weld(s) need to not be undercut, (going too fast, not giving the filler metal...time to fill, or the machine is too hot). When the weld deposit droops...(caused by slowing down, leaving too much filler metal)...That is unprofessional. I have done pipe code work (ASME Section 9) plus structural fitting & welding work since 1979. Had many inspectors checking on my work.
      All the best, Pete

Chain hooks are cheap. I’d weld one one each bucket. I cut out my own out of some real thick scrap steel so they were free to me. They’ll hold more than my mini excavator can ever lift so I’m not worried about it failing. As for welders. I run a Miller Trailblazer but I started off with the exact same setup your neighbor has. Does it make me a better welder? No. I can run anything. What it does do is when I have help, I can have another person running my plasma cutter and plug-in air compressor at the same time I’m welding and it doesn’t effect my arc because the Trailblazer has 2 separate generators attached to one engine. For the price I paid for it, I could have bought 2 generators, a plug-in welder and a gas powered air compressor and still been money ahead. So there’s that to consider. In the end though, for me, my set up is meet, professional, and all my welding leads are built into my truck bed, which I couldn’t do any other way. And I have a 100% duty cycle maxed out at 325 amps. I’ve never needed all the amps but I’ve needed 260-275 amps on occasion and it really growles when you feed it those vitamins. All that said, it’s an amazing machine but I can weld something for a customer with champion generator and Chicago electric stick welder and it wouldn’t look any different than with my Miller.

Yup, it isn't the machine it's the person's ability to know the machine and how to use it. Just make sure you use a chain rated for lifting and the chain's capacity.

  • @akbychoice

The biggest difference in machines IMO are the duty cycle, fine tune capabilities, variable controls, capacity and longevity.
Can you dig a well with a spoon? Possibly.
Is a shovel better? Of course.
Is an excavator or well drilling rig better, yes.

Only thing left to do is test it's capacity limits and your good to go JD. Enjoyed the video. 👍🇺🇸

Dang you did what I was gonna do and say he welded it upside down. I’ve watched a lot of certified pipe welders and a lot of self taught welders like myself and most of them would’ve done it that same way. My dad left me his old Lincoln 220 welding machine what most call a Cracker Box machine as they laugh at it yet we’ve been using it for over 40 years now.

Ugly welds or not I do agree all that matters is the connection made. However, knowing how to properly attach metal AND making it look nice shows pride in work. And that’s the kinda work I like to see. Just my 2 cents 🤷‍♂️

Most people use a hook on their equipment that is a 5/16-3/8 size because that is the common chain size used. 1/2” is a little oversized and I doubt you want to handle 1/2” chain unless you are Superman. Otherwise nice job!

Just joined the mini excavator club and my question why I the hook needed?
Couldn't you use the teeth of the bucket to hoist something up?
Maybe I would have to see how this works but I just figured I would put a chain around the teeth of the bucket or the bucket itself but like I said I'm new.
