  • This is the life and times of Æthelwulf, King of Wessex: son of Ecgberht and father of Alfred the Great.
Æthelwulf lived during a turbulent time with the native English kingdoms continuing to jockey for power in Britain and Viking raids becoming increasingly dangerous.
Æthelwulf was a man of firsts: having peacefully succeeded his father to the throne of Wessex (the first in nearly two centuries); he also personally made the pilgrimage to Rome and controversially married into the royal Carolingian dynasty, both the latter acts having potentially dire consequences both for his reign and for the later dream of a united England.

This is the kind of content I've been scouring youtube for nearly a decade looking for. So excited to see this channel grow, nothing better than A+ quality history videos about Anglo-Saxon and Norman history. Very excited for the video on the "Anarchy" I've always wanted to watch one!

Thank you. The Anarchy period will be covered soon, but will most likely be in several (long) parts given there's so much to talk about.

I have always enjoyed learning more about English history especially early English history. This is a very interesting documentary. Thank you for this documentary. History is a favorite subject of mine. I had no idea that AEthelwulf made a pilgrimage to Rome. That is one reason why I love these documentaries; one learns so much from them.

I've been tirelessly searching for a well thought out and researched channel, and am immensely both happy and grateful to you and the channel. As a medievalist, I'm proud/happy to call your channel home. Keep your video's coming, as I know how hard and costly the research is. I will support you a million percent.

      Thanks. That's high praise indeed.
I have more videos coming, including a series on the Anarchy period, though these are longer vids and may take a few weeks, as I want to be able to release them in sequence.
Meanwhile more "one-off" type vids will still be published. :)

@@HistoryHubChannel I love both long and short one's. How ever you choose to do it, awesome. Now that's an awesome period. If you get into the Plantagenet's and Tudor's, I'm highly knowledgeable in that area till 1603. I have a wealth of knowledge from about 620-1603.

A great series. My one problem is that the little icons for the various players are so small that I can’t read the names and it gets confusing… especially this one with all the Aeth and Ecg and etc., names.
Nonetheless, everything is so well researched and presented.

Howdy. Another Texan here... Been an avid follower of your channel from pretty early on as this type of detailed material on said subjects is rare indeed. Wondering if you'll branch out from Wessex related stuff and do some coverage of other Saxon era kingdoms and their respective leaders (ie Penda of Mercia, Edwin of Northumbria etc..) ? Y'all keep up the good work!

Fascinating insite into the political atmosphere of the Anglo- Saxons! Was not aware Alfred went to Rome twice. And the type of sub Kingship practice is interesting. And these early Germanic succession customs are different from what eventually take place in England and Europe. Well done!

    • @HistoryHubChannel
      @HistoryHubChannel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Fun-fact on the sub-kingship: Alfred did ask to be made King of Kent after his elder and last brother Æthelred became king, but the latter refused. They did, however, agree that Alfred be the preferred successor in council with the Witan in early 871 shortly before Æthelred died.
It is likely King Æthelred and his advisors thought splitting the realm (even with Alfred under his overlordship) would be a bad idea with the Great Heathen Army lurking around.

Thank you so much. Your carefully crafted and beautifully organised commentary helps clarify the confusing turns of succession. I think I am predisposed to think of Aethelwulf in a very positive light. The lineage from Aethelwulf to g-grandson Aethelstan seems to define the emergence of the societal architecture of the nation of England itself.
Like Alfred after him, Aethelwulf appears determined to chart a course of long-term balance and stability. Both of these great leaders were willing to share and delegate power in the interest of the greater good of their people.

I have read and re-read the documents of this time. I have viewed the charters in their original Latin. I have read other documents in their original Old English. I know they are bias, and I have tried to take that into consideration. What I see is an old man tired of fighting against the heathens, then rejuvenated by the pilgrimage. Old men cannot recapture their youths. A mistake many men, not just Aethelwulf, have made.

I think a lot of what went into making Wessex and then later England unified was sometimes accidents or pure luck.
Æthelberht unifying the Kingdoms of Wessex and Kent is an example and wasn’t planned.
Another being the death of Æthelred of Mercia without a male heir.
Also the death of Ælfweard, allowing Æthelstan to succeed his father as King of both Mercia and Wessex

I think Aethelwulf was an aging man. He thought that marrying a young girl might change that reality. It is a common mistake for elderly men to make.
