Wessex Before Alfred: the Reigns of Æthelbald, Æthelberht and Æthelred

  • In this video we delve into the lives and reigns of Alfred's brothers, particularly Æthelred, King of Wessex (R. 865-871 AD).
In previous videos we covered the reigns of Alfred the Great's grandfather and father, Ecgberht and Æthelwulf.
Alfred the Great is famed as the saviour of the Anglo-Saxons and Wessex, having fought doggedly against the Danish invasions, achieving his triumph at Edington in 878 and laying the foundations of England.
However, Alfred's reign was unlikely from his birth, given he was the fifth son of Æthelwulf. Alfred was also just one man, though a remarkable one at that and built on the legacies of these previous kings.
We cover the reigns of Alfred's elder brothers as Kings of Wessex from Æthelbald to Æthelred, including the earlier battles against the Great Heathen army during the period 865 to 871 AD.

Welcome to History Hub! For fans of our sister channel Bert's Battles you may recognise some parts of this video already from 'the Battle of Ashdown.' I felt the period from Æthelwulf's reign to Alfred's deserved a dedicated video, especially the reign of Æthelred and since much of the reign was covered in the BB vid it made sense to use parts of it into this larger video. Hope you enjoy it. 👍

Well done! I've always wondered did the Scandinavian Kings in lands such as Norway & Denmark condone the viking invasions? Didn't Wessx have diplomatic relationships with the rulers of those lands before the invasions? Or were those sea kings like Ivar working on their own initiative? Enjoy ur work!

I bet that Alfred’s brothers would have never imagined that their younger brother would completely overshadowed them.

With all these absolutely confusing Aethulwulfs and Aethulbalds and other Anglo-Saxons with cacophonous names it's just easier to ignore most of them and start with William the Conqueror -that rhyme I learnt at school was so true "William the conqueror was the first of our kings -not counting Alfreds,Ethelberts and things!"

Id be interested to know how the coins from Anglo-Saxon Angleland survived and made it into British historical collections...Were they all found in hoards? Individual metal detecting? Passed down through families? Imagine being able to handle a coin that have passed through hands of both peasants and kings...goosebumps....Ive always wanted a British Roman or Anglo-Saxon era pottery sherd necklace pendant..

Come to Jordan, we have Roman pottery shards literally laying on the ground everywhere in Petra , Um Qais, Pella, and so many other archeological sites. So much pottery has been found here that the shards aren’t even considered valuable

That stone was placed there sometime after 1730. The capital of Britain for all the kings listed on it was not London.
