My Ferrari F430 Broke.......AGAIN! **TRYING TO FIX IT MYSELF**

  • My Battery was getting old, so I think that was causing some transmission errors and clutch issues while driving to lunch today. So I install a new battery into the Ferrari... And it seems to be working better.
    The Battery is a 91-700B. However it sounds like a H6 will also fit possibly.

    Most people don’t realize it but you should not have that grease on a contact surface as it will diminish the performance of the connection. You can put it on the outside just fine but dielectric grease does not conduct electricity very well

    I bet both of my testicles that any Ferrari dealer would replace clutch and battery with those symptoms.
    Clutch first, than they would call to tell you new clutch is in, but your battery is weak and needs to be replaced....$6,000 later.....

    Good video, one thing you need to keep in mine is that with these electronic cars these days the batteries only last so long and you will never be able to predict that time , one day it works and the next it don't. you drive yours enough that a battery tender is not going to help much.

    Hey Dan. I had a similar problem with my 360 recently and when I pulled over, the F1 reservoir cap had burst nearly off. If you had a low voltage issue you would have had the red battery warning light on the dash right? I am betting you have some air in the lines or a leak somewhere. Have you bled the F1 circuit in your car yet?

    That Bosch Battery is made by Exide and you pay more money for the Bosch label. The right Exide Battery for this vehicle is an L3-48X which has the same specs as the original battery. Also the Ferrari Battery conditioner that comes with the vehicle say it's only supposed to be used with Acid Filled batteries, NOT for use with Gel Glass Mat batteries. You can buy the Exide L3-48X at Home Depot for $119.00 shown here:
    www.homedepot.com/p/Exide-Extreme-L3-48-Auto-Battery-L3-48X/204852600
    Disregard the picture shown for this battery as Home Depot uses a "Standard Exide Battery" for many of the Exide car batteries they sell. I've found Home Depot has the very best prices for car batteries, who knew?

    Did your car just become exhibit A in the case for a manual gearbox?
    You could also check the voltage over the terminals with the engine running to check the health of the alternator. If it’s not charging then Your now battery will only be a temporary fix.

    • @JediSoulfly
      @JediSoulfly 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Daniel Hurlbert Well I know that is can sometimes only take a week or so in some cases for exotics to drain the batteries. I'm sure once the battery starting dying it can be less. If you're only driving it on the weekends then it might not hurt to keep it plugged in during the week.

    • @eatsleeprace

      JediSoulfly, exactly that same issue you described is my experience with a 2006 Mercedes E class. That said, count older BMW 7 series and Jags in for the same. Good decision to replace the battery and maybe charge it once in a while in case it's not your daily driver.

      My rule of thumb for my car is to plug it on a battery maintainer if I don’t drive for more than 3 days. Believe me, your battery will last much longer by keeping it constantly topped up. But make sure you get a good battery maintainer. Don’t Ferrari’s come from the factory with C-tek battery maintainers?

    • @Rhaspun
      @Rhaspun 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Many modern cars have a lot of power draining features. I have a Mercedes and it can drain a battery within a month if not kept charged.

    • @328gts1987
      @328gts1987 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      At the frunk top (=trunk front) in front of the steering wheel there is a connector. To get to this connector (3 pin) you have to remove the lid (=unscrew 4). Just in front of the power-steering tank you will find it, capped of.
      I leave the lid off (only reinstall when I go on trips for several days) all the time, no issues. But use the cap to keep rain out of the connector.
      The (re-)charger (=Ferrari) shows the level of power in the battery and also can recharge (not only trickle) the battery.
      Warning! Never boost your battery when connected to your car using a booster, it may blow your ECU, dash-clocks etc.
      Better to recharge, takes time but costs much less...

    Nice video again Daniel. Did this job also once and you need a snake body.
    Anyway question. Why does your car show a suspension alarm before starting? Mine does not.
    Also can you time your oil-pump before starting for me?
    I mean the time it takes your oil pump (after turning the key, before starting the motor) to start and switch off at max pressure. As I understand the longer it takes fot the pump to do this (wear and Tear), it needs replacing. At mine F430 spider 2008 (53.000km's) is takes 14,4 sec.
    Note: before I time this the door of the driver is open, no pre boost. As it always pre-boost when you open the door.

    Yeah, because I totally would have gone straight to the battery after clutch problems... Thant is some next level thinkin'! Have you ever jumpered with a spare 12V battery (probably use the lighter socket) so the car never looses power? It was a 50/50 chance the airbags would go nuts on the Boxster if you just pull the battery.
    Just as a little safety tip (that you didn't ask for), probably best to detach the Ground first and attach the + terminal first. That way when you are loosening or tightening the + terminal and your wrench hits a bit of exposed frame you don't get the 4th of July. You can ask me how I know, but I bet you already know ;) Franny

    Maybe a Ferrari is different but this is my understanding... You're running off the alternator when your car is running. The battery is there just to start the vehicle. You can literally disconnect the battery and it runs just fine on some cars. Ahhhh electrical stuff stinks.

    • @guardian1722
      @guardian1722 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Your car has 150 amp alternator. The F1 pump uses less than 30 amps, otherwise your PSF31 30 amp fuse would blow.
      With a working alternator, the battery makes no contribution to the car's power grid. If the alternator were malfunctioning, you would get a dashboard warning light.
      The F1 shifting problem was not caused by the battery.

    • @Jason_Burns
      @Jason_Burns 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not exactly true, everything in your electrical system is tied through the battery. Some older batteries develop internal load problems or are holding plate surface charges or other issues that modern ecu's detect as a fault. It wouldn't matter that the alternator can put out enough power if the battery itself isn't performing correctly. I've run into this issue with Mercedes. A battery can load test fine, even with dealer level equipment and there still be an issue with it. Sometimes charging a battery then checking the voltage, load test it, look at the recovery, then check the resting voltage again. It's fairly likely you'd see an anomaly.

    • @shawnhicks619
      @shawnhicks619 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      On a normal car i might agree with you, but having extensively researched Ferrari's since I plan to buy one it appears the battery will do all kinds of weird stuff to your car if bad. It also appears Ferrari;s like to eat batterys in the sense that a Honda might run for 6 years on a typical bargain battery but a Ferrari can and will eat a quality battery in a few years especially if not tendered. All sorts of stories of the gremlins a faulty batter will cause including F1 pump not actuating gears properly.

    • @guardian1722
      @guardian1722 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, that's a terrible example. According to your video, the Mini refused to start due to a loose battery cable. It didn't die on the road while running. The alternator can't supply any electrical power when it's not turning. The battery's function is to start the car. After the car is running, it is essentially out of the circuit as a supplier of electrical power and the alternator takes over. A battery's voltage is around 12.8 volts, while the alternator supplies 14.5 volts. When the alternator is turning, the car's circuitry doesn't even know the battery is there. It can't see it.
      When Ferraris experience problems due to weak batteries, it is because during the start up, the battery voltage dips so low that some of the initial computer values get scrambled. But these types of problems begin right after the start, they do not suddenly develop in the middle of the run.

    • @shawnhicks619
      @shawnhicks619 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some day a well meaning mechanic or naive jump start specialist will attempt to disconnect your battery with the engine running. If you value your car and your money, don't let him!
      The man from the road service thinks he's being helpful. After he can't jump start your car, he puts in his own known good battery and starts your car. So far so good -- your battery was definitely either run down or bad, and he's proven it.
      Now he decides to "test" your alternator by disconnecting the battery. After all, the car's ignition should be able to run on just the alternator's power alone.
      Wrong!
      The moment he disconnects either lead from your battery, it's entirely possible he caused thousands of dollars in damage. Here's why...
      Your battery does more than just provide electricity. It also shorts AC, spikes and transients to ground. Removing the battery from the circuit allows those spikes and transients to travel around, endangering every semiconductor circuit in your car. The ECU, the speed sensitive steering, the memory seat adjustments, the cruise control, and even the car's stereo.
      Even if your computers and stereo remain intact, in a great many cases removing the battery burns out the diodes in the alternator, necessitating a new alternator. If disconnecting the battery interferes with the voltage regulator's control voltage input, it's possible for the alternator voltage to go way over the top (I've heard some say hundreds of volts), frying everything.
      Even the initial premise was wrong. If you disconnect the battery and the car conks out, you don't know if it conked out due to insufficient alternator current, or whether the resulting transients caused your ECU (the car's computer, which controls fuel mixture, timing, and much more) to spit out bad data, shutting down the car.
      Nobody should EVER run your engine without a battery.
      And yet when you tell them not to, they'll roll their eyes. "I'm a professional. I do this every day. It's fine!" They'll sound so authoritative. So commanding. So in charge. So intimidating. But they're wrong.
      The problem, of course, is that disconnecting the battery doesn't always damage something. It does it only sometimes. Less experienced jump start professionals and automotive technicians figure if they got away with it a few times, it must be OK.
      We have already established that Ferrari's dont like funky power outputs, matter of fact the electrical components really dont like it and will cause thousands of dollars in damage. This is why you dont jump start a Ferrari with a battery charger that has the start feature, you will fry lots of components. This is also why they recommend you tender the battery of not in use. Always wandered if Daniel tendered his battery and we find out in the comments no, but he intends to. The problems Daniel had have been documented by other Ferrari owners, and in some of the newer cars that have the stop/start engine feature the battery issues are way worse. while im with Daniel that he may not have 100% solved the issue with the shifting issues just the fact that changing that battery resulted in the near instant starts the car is supposed to have shows the old one was nearly depleted at least for duty in the Ferrari.

Of course you cant buy one...so 275 for eight new coils by accel....no more charge light coming on today. But a battery for trans is strange....unless it electronic shifting in some way....but it would be using alternator ......battery are used just to start cars and run radio etc.....i thought.

      @normalguysupercar  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The mclaren battery is super expensive. 458 battery isn't crazy expensive but both cars are very unhappy if the battery isn't in very good condition and can have weird gremlins show up.

      Not too many people that own Ferrari have the guts to work on their car.i appreciate the fact that you are not a mechanic and do work on your car proving that what man creates man can fix it. Great job.give courage to other people.

    You should have check first if the battery is really dead or just discharged. I have a similar problem with my car battery in 2015 (5 years battery old), but instead of buying a new one I buy instead a ctek charger&tester and I am keep it working till at least today, so I extend the battery life a couple of years so far with a 2-3 charging per year. A good battery sense is mandatory with theses cars.

      If your alternator is up to snuff and you drive the car at least 2-3 times a week, there shouldn't be a need to charge the battery otherwise. After awhile, though, the battery simply won't hold a charge properly.

    Nice video. Do you know if it came with AGM battery originally from Ferrari? (AGM battery can be vented as well). Just one comment: I think it's better to put on the terminal grease after the cables are connected. Grease is insulator. I definitely don't want any between my battery posts and the battery clamps. Cheers!

    Place the grease on the terminals after connecting the leads.Otherwise you're just contaminating the electrical connection.

    Sorry to hear that Daniel ..... I hope everything is ok 😊 with your 430.
    you should give it a road test and stretch its legs after installing the new battery.
    But first maybe you need to check the f1 bump oil, 😭😭😭 because two days ago i almost got the same symptoms with shifters.... my gear was stuck on the 4th no matter what I do, the auto button won't engage, I can't shift up or down .... but after I took it the work shop.... they told me that there's a small leack from the f1bump ...they fix it and everything is ok now.
