Thanks for this! It was useful for reference on many bits for changing plugs on my maserati 4200 gransport (very similar engine in many respects) - especially torque specs, grease/anti seize specs. The two things I would recommend to everyone doing it: 1) use a magnetic spark plug socket. Much better feel and no issues with rubber coming off. Well worth it to avoid cross threading. 2) get a tiny 1/4 torque wrench (type designed for bicycles). Fits almost as many places as a 1/4 wrench and allows you to torque to spec

Dan, the Ferrari spark plugs looked easy to install but here is a method that works good to prevent cross threading when the plug is in a difficult location or at a difficult angle. Get a length of heater hose or gas hose with an I.D, slightly smaller than the O.D. of the spark plug porcelain. Slide the hose on the plug and use the hose to insert the plug and get the threads started. I've done this for so long that now I always use this method even if the installation is super easy. Cool video, I learned something new. I got here because I was curious about what plugs Ferrari uses. Your right about the spark plugs. People who don't know about cars don't understand. Many factors wear out plugs. Especially, high performance use. I own a Ford Crown Victoria Police. So long idling during patrolling, and high rpms during high speed emergencies is what wears out cop car plugs. The Ford Crown Victoria Police uses platinum plugs. So when used by police the platinum plugs don't last the 100,000 miles service life. Even though this car is retired, I still drive fast at full throttle sometimes, I'm an aggressive and spirited driver. It's not a Ferrari, but I love my police car. Also, you're using great plugs. The NGK laser iridium plugs are great plugs. And like you said, high rpms and high compression, which is high performance use will wear out plugs sooner. These NGK plugs are OEM plugs on the Mitsubishi Evolution X. I use to own an Evo X but film school, and work forced me to sell it, I couldn't afford it anymore. So now I own an affordable, and durable retired Ford Crown Victoria Police car. Ones I'm a successful filmmaker I'll own another Evo X. And just like you I'm a fan of Ferrari. I like your F430. I also want an F40 and a LaFerrari.

I wouldn't want to worry about engine damage or failure. Ferrari engines are expensive, as I'm sure you know with your Ferrari experience. Although, the spark plugs needed for a high performance car like yours aren't cheap. The NGK laser iridium plugs you're using aren't cheap either. Depending on the seller they can go for $11 or more each, and since you need 8 that's almost $100 on just plugs. But you own a Ferrari so money isn't an issue. Out of curiosity. How much are the OEM plugs from Ferrari?
My son closed on his new home in Pflugerville just yesterday and should be moved from CA to Austin within the next three weeks. Hopefully, you two can link up one of these days. You have a lot in common........computer guys, car guys, about the same age, etc. The main difference between the two of you......he’s an Audi/Porsche guy, but loves Ferrari. Jetco Torque Tools from California makes excellent ED Series Electronic Torque Wrenches. Best model for your spark plug job would be : ED-250i. Length is 11" and torque range is : 2.8-28 Nm or 2.1-21 ft.lb. . Accuracy is : +/-1%. Drive size is : 3/8". They used to be sold under Proto brand name. I hope you don't mind my suggestion. I just purchased two wrenches from them.Model is Revo but one of the wrenches with same range is 14" long.
Just done mine this morning. Second time on this car - much easier than the first time but thanks to the Italian designers that made the plugs so inaccessible. Good feeling though. Track rod ends next - maybe tomorrow with a NY day hangover!

Or you can get one of those bendy tripods that you can kinda wrap around something to hold it in place. Either way, you'd have both your hands available for any challenging work.
I don't know if I'd call it my roots, it's just getting colder out so it's much more tolerable to work on the car... :) Plus it's got some maintenance that's due.
Gotta love my 360 Modena, sparkplugs change is much, much easier. Nothing needing removing, just access the coils and plugs. Downside being the timing belts, of course...
Sir I just did my plugs at the beginning of summer and did not remove anything else expect coils prior to spark plugs. And I'm far from a professional DIY guy. Someone might remove side panels in order to gain more room but it was totally doable with panels in place. What I've watched your videos I've also noticed that the 360 seems to have much more room at the engine bay compared to 430, especially "lateral wise".

@@Giggiyygooits strange because the change frequency on the 4200/gransport (very similar engine with cross plane instead of flat plane crank) is nowhere near as frequent, yet that still revs to 7500 - could that extra 1000 rpm really eat the plugs that often? Perhaps, but I went with denso iridium on mine in any case as an upgrade of sorts, and won't be changing them again for 100,000km (60,000 miles or so)
I see the bike on the garage wall and wonder if you’ve ever thought about a park tool torque wrench. They make a small one that goes up to 10nm that might fit in that small space

There are a lot of rip offs on maintenance of high end cars. It does not take a Ferrari trained technician to change the oil or the plugs. Most wealthy owner just don't want to get dirty. I am curious as to the effect of DIY service on resale. I am sure your work is as good as a dealer ( don't get me started about dealer incompetence on my service visits ) but I wonder if it affects value when you resell.
Next time you change plugs or are just curious, purchase an endoscope to look inside the cylinders. They are available at some auto part stores or Amazon has them as well. They're relatively inexpensive and some attach to your smart phone.

Dielectric grease should be used only to coat thin layer inside of spark plug boots and ceramic part of plug. Dielectric grease provides high temperature lubrication on rubber,plastic and ceramic.

The newest mustang gt 350 with the flat plane crank revs that high and it has high compression, no way they need to be replaced that frequently, iridium plugs will easily go 50k or more. Ferrari has you bamboozled if you think you have to replace them that often.
Yes I took it and many longer drives. It didn't drone much because of the higher pitch. The 458 actually has more drone than the 430 because the exhaust note is so much deeper.
Dan are those carbon side panels an extra or are they a standard fitting on the 430, i want some for my 360. Also will you be going to the F1 GP? What the hell is that exhaust, never seen one like that? LOL how many tools are rattling around in the under tray :)
Every time I change spark plugs I spray a light breeze of air down the spark plug hole way before removing it so no dust or dirt falls in the engine after taking the plug out. Just a recommendation. Not a necessity.

I just noticed your Michigan Linux license plate on the wall. Are you a Linux user? I'm a Linux sysadmin with a baby Ferrari (Alfa 4c). Finny thing is, I live in PA but flew to Austin to buy the Alfa as it was hard finding my spec.
You do not want to put anything on the front part of the electrode of a spark plug, if anything in the back where the coil boot contact the electrode it's fine just a little bit but not in the front, just on the threads a little of anti-size very little and not all the way to the top threads, besides water will never be able to acumulate on the front part of the electrode the temperatures in the combustion chamber where that part of the electrode lives are crazy hot so any water or moisture just evaporate so is unnecessary.
Dielectric grease ?! 🤦♂️ That will increase the earth electrode electrical resistance value to the car’s overall ground reference point ! You should apply a very thin coat of 2 stroke lube oil or a 5w30 thin layer of oil (ident to engine oil, for instance) on the thread.
My 2007 F430 downshift is kinda slow even on race setting. If I am on 3rd (4000 rpm) and downshift to 2nd, it happens slowly as if there is some lag. The rpm drops to idle for like a sec before it rev matches to 2nd gear. I've watch your driving videos and notice whenever you down shift the rev match happens almost immediately. Any idea whats wrong with mine? Appreciate your thoughts.
@@juice760 There was an oil leak so I sent it to Ferrari and they told me it was coming from the flywheel oil seal. In order to get to the flywheel they had to open up the gearbox and they suggested to me to change the clutch since the gearbox is already opened. So I changed the clutch too and now the shifts are much faster.
I cannot wait till i am about 48 years old to buy a Ferrari. I'll have to save 1500 per month for 10 years to put a nice down payment or pay cash for one.

7:38,Spark plugs are barely tight? I can't believe that specified torque is 10 Newton Meters (7.4 Foot -Pounds). Specified torque for my Toyota Corolla is 24 Newton Meters (18 Foot -Pounds).
@@normalguysupercarto be fair, with light anti seize/grease torque specs need to be reduced about 30% as lubricated torque is higher - so it's really about the equivalent of 15Nm of dry torque spec. Which is pretty common for aluminium engines
@@normalguysupercar we've had a few 4:30 is at the shop lately it seems like the only problems we've had is this little of nitrogen canister that's on the right side of the engine bay that thing ends up leaking nitrogen after a little bit and the throwout bearing and I seems to be the only problems we've been having with those cars other than other than that they're pretty Bulletproof

Indeed! There are many factors for plug life. And they aren't terrible expensive to replace so better safe than sorry.

I actually use one of those bendy tripods... There just wasn't room or anything to hang it on. Meg's not really a big fan of being a camerawoman.

Easy, once you get the side panels off. Changing plugs on my 1974 Trans Am with a 455...now that was fun! But then, they didn't cost $150 a set!
Those 455s are really wide. I had an Olds cutlass with a 455 and that's a huge motor.

Having a paper trail is certainly of value, but it's hard to quantify exactly how much value.

The s2000 revs to 9k and has the same compression ratio but the spark plugs need to be changed every 100k miles
Engines like new oil and plugs makes them happy, just think if the sparkplug tip broke and the damage it can do. Good for you.

The carbon panels are aftermarket. I will be at F1 this year for sure! And there's got to be at least 5 tools floating around on that panel. LOL!!

as for your bolts, try using stainless steel bolts, they never rust, the allen buttonhead will rust over time

Go with Titanium bolts, sort of black and used in aerospace. Stainless has to be Type 300 otherwise they will slightly corrode (marine usage).

I just noticed your Michigan Linux license plate on the wall. Are you a Linux user? I'm a Linux sysadmin with a baby Ferrari (Alfa 4c). Finny thing is, I live in PA but flew to Austin to buy the Alfa as it was hard finding my spec.

My car revs to 8,200 and has 10:1 compression! Haha but it also has 365,000 miles. I run copper plugs and change them every 10K to 15K miles.

That copper is an asshole.
You do not want to put anything on the front part of the electrode of a spark plug, if anything in the back where the coil boot contact the electrode it's fine just a little bit but not in the front, just on the threads a little of anti-size very little and not all the way to the top threads, besides water will never be able to acumulate on the front part of the electrode the temperatures in the combustion chamber where that part of the electrode lives are crazy hot so any water or moisture just evaporate so is unnecessary.

Dielectric grease ?! 🤦♂️ That will increase the earth electrode electrical resistance value to the car’s overall ground reference point ! You should apply a very thin coat of 2 stroke lube oil or a 5w30 thin layer of oil (ident to engine oil, for instance) on the thread.

My 2007 F430 downshift is kinda slow even on race setting. If I am on 3rd (4000 rpm) and downshift to 2nd, it happens slowly as if there is some lag. The rpm drops to idle for like a sec before it rev matches to 2nd gear. I've watch your driving videos and notice whenever you down shift the rev match happens almost immediately. Any idea whats wrong with mine? Appreciate your thoughts.
Hmm, I'm not sure why it would be slow. Seems like maybe more F1 pressure. Perhaps the accumulator has low pressure.
Post this on Ferrari.Chat and someone will know what to do.

@@juice760 There was an oil leak so I sent it to Ferrari and they told me it was coming from the flywheel oil seal. In order to get to the flywheel they had to open up the gearbox and they suggested to me to change the clutch since the gearbox is already opened. So I changed the clutch too and now the shifts are much faster.
By the way, regarding an earlier video of yours in which you received a citation for having your REAR wheels on the stop line, the cop was right.

No, there's 2 sizes. I think the long ones are 50mm and the short ones are 20 or 25mm.

@@normalguysupercarto be fair, with light anti seize/grease torque specs need to be reduced about 30% as lubricated torque is higher - so it's really about the equivalent of 15Nm of dry torque spec. Which is pretty common for aluminium engines
How much would a Ferrari dealership charge for this? Also what are the OEM spark plugs in the F430?
I have no idea on the cost, but I'm guessing over $1k. The OEM are the same ones.

Depends what type of gunk and where it is. On the engine I used engine degreaser and water with rags.

@@normalguysupercar we've had a few 4:30 is at the shop lately it seems like the only problems we've had is this little of nitrogen canister that's on the right side of the engine bay that thing ends up leaking nitrogen after a little bit and the throwout bearing and I seems to be the only problems we've been having with those cars other than other than that they're pretty Bulletproof
