  • On average muscle tissue takes 4-6 weeks to remodel and heal. So, why the “fudge” are we still getting pain a year later. Shouldn’t the tissues be healed by now?
    I’ll let you in on a secret. Your nervous system is like an overprotective mother. It still remembers when you fell down those stair when you were 12 years old and it definitely still remembers when you pulled a muscle in your back bending over to pick up your hat last year.
    Now every time you try to bend over to touch your toes in yoga, your nervous system kicks in and tells you, “don’t do this, remember what happened last time!” And a lot of times you will think you blew out your back again, but it’s likely not because you injured the muscle again, but your nervous system is punishing you for not obeying it’s rules.
    If you are moving better after a massage, yoga class or athletic therapy session it’s likely more to do with changes in your nervous system than in the structures of your body. I have had lots of people touch their toes after one session just by tricking their nervous system into thinking it is alright. Of course for this to become permanent we need to teach you to become an expert con artist.
