    It's not the first paintless vehicle to reach the market. The DeLorean did well without paint and some of the original models are still around rust free. There's always the option of temporary vinyl wrapping and due to its shape, it make wrapping a breeze. Professional wrapping places are gonna be raking in the profits with the cyber truck. Win win.

      The Delorean was produced during high inflation, delays hit with costly production, a lack of consumer interest, and unfavorable exchange rates (built in Ireland) drove the company to bankruptcy.
      Cyber truck is contending with high inflation and delays... But consumer demand isn't be a problem yet and the vehicle itself is built in America.
      So we'll need to wait and see 🤔

    This has both pros & cons. On the positive side, it cut down the cost, material, and production time and it is easy to build. On the negative side, it is not easy to repair if cracks, Aluminium castings may bend, and twist. Also, the shock absorbing properties has to be checked.

      Modern cars are designed to have "controlled deformation" in a crumple zone. Casting a chassi in larger pieces gives me pause for concern. Is safety a proper concern here if the passenger cabin and the front are of the same piece? The idea that everything around the cabin is expendable.

      @@Korvmannen Casting allows crumple zones to be more consistent and better engineered than making them from multiple pieces. So your concerns are not well placed with casting.
      Think of crushing an aluminum can, now make the walls of that aluminum can from multiple parts, which one will crumple more uniformly and consistently?

      @@zontarr8812 No, this casting process is not compatible with stainless steel. This is only for aluminum / zinc parts, so it will be for chassis. the exoskeleton will be pressed (formed) not cast.

      @@eomhS Sounds reasonable. Though has it been done before? Would like to look it up if possible. Even if it's just crash tests. My concern wasn't that it's casting, but if it's made in one piece. So that the passenger cabin is sturdy, but all the rest possible to crumble in a good way.

    Personally I like the look of the Cybertruck in stainless steel, but if you buy one and are dead set on having one in a different color I'm certain that there will be companies selling color wraps for the Cybertruck the day it is released.

    Agreed.. my interest in it is the dent-free paint-free design. I really don’t need a truck. But every other car gets beat to hell on the highway driving I do weekly. Between rocks, tires, small animals and other assorted shit on the highway.. that durable body would be a huge advantage to me

      None of this paint wax ceramic scratches.

    I appreciate the effort at maximizing manufacturing efficiency and reducing cost, but I am concerned about the long term costs. I know most vehicles are considered disposable anymore, but solidly casting an aluminum frame and the body will almost guarantee that any wreck will total the vehicle and leave it unrepairable. I wonder how many of these will end up scrapped within the first year.

      Right? A relatively small chip to the Al frame could impact its functionality. Does it mean you need to replace the whole thing? Imagine the cost. Imagine the insurance premium

      @@rftek yes the body is, but not the frame. Regardless because they have nearly stamped the body as one piece, it will be much more difficult and expensive to repair, and that doesn't even account for the fact that it is in fact stainless steel.

    I suppose, eventually, vehicles will be 3D printed. Imagine 100s of printers in a factory running 24/7, using dozens of different matls.
    Instead of colors how about textures? Sandblast, high polish, iridescent, etched? Aftermarket?

      They never said all credit was to Elon. there was NO single demand for it that is why they never needed it. because Tesla requested it. the idra group(the other 5 company saying it NO as it was probably not practically seeing a no need for it) work hand on hand with Tesla they worked together to develop it. If you did not hear they were getting feed back from Tesla on what to add so basically it was practically custom made for Tesla(there 6k press). The 9k press was more Idra as they probably knew that Tesla was looking for a stronger press.

      I'm not clear...In a major fender bender and yes Tesla's truck will take damage. Do we have to pay to replace the entire body. It's an obvious question, and I'm sure has been addressed but, I'm still in the dark and still on the fence.

      In a fender bender, where the damage is primarily just to the body of the vehicle, the truck can still be repaired. Stainless is more difficult to repair. On a typical vehicle, the bent section can be cut off, a new piece welded in place, and then it's all sanded, smoothed, and repainted. On a vehicle with no paint, you cannot hide the welds. So, you have to replace the entire body section affected. But, look at the Deloreon. If you ever see one that is painted, that is a good indicator that it was in an accident. They cover up the repair with paint. You can do that, or vinyl wrap it. There will be options. Minor damage will not make the vehicle a total loss.

    It'll be interesting to see what issues may arise from the single-piece castings when repairs need to be done. I'm also curious about accident impacts when there aren't the traditional crumple zones present anymore. I'm sure Tesla has a solution and I'm eager to see what it is. CT was originally looking to be the first EV truck on the market, but not being first has its advantages too, like being able to add features that the other guys have already.

    I remember having something like $23,000 back in November 2019, and reserving the tri-motor with FSD for $77,000(112784xxx). And now the stock is worth $350,000, the truck will probably end up being close to $95,000, and I should have a couple hundred grand to play with while I drive around in my new CT4FSD.

      @@alanmay7929 The range of all cars go down when towing regardless of fuel type, because of aerodynamic drag and added weight. If towing was such a needed capability the most common cars wouldn’t be camrys and accords, people buy based on their needs and most people don’t need that. Remember a few years before humanity got airborne for the first time there were experts saying that it couldn’t be done, you remind me of those people (even though you’re clearly not an expert), ev technology is in its infant phase and is already outperforming ice cars, imagine when this tech is maxed out in a few decades, you will feel stupid for not seeing the signs

    Cybertruck needs a Cybertrailer with a full additional battery pack in full enclosed and flatbed versions for wide adoption as a contractor's work truck.
    It would also be interesting to have a Cybertrailer in an RV version.
    Real world tests of current electric pickup trucks show that towing drastically reduces range, so to have a working vehicle to not only haul materials and tools but also power a worksite, a full battery cybertrailer is something that should accompany the release of the Cybertruck.

    I'm not sold on it being out in 2023 just yet, my questions would be; Is there going to be only one gigapress in Tesla's entire Cybertruck factory? So, when it breaks down, and as a machine, it will break down at some point, the entire production run stops until a part/s for a one of kind machine can be made/found? And stainless steel is nice, but there is an entire region of the country labeled the "rust belt" for a reason, it may take longer but stainless steel will rust too, especially without paint. Nice vehicle for sunny CA, AZ, or TX but not so much for the rust belt. On the other hand I'd really like to see Ford buy a gigapress and start making F150 frames in Aluminum to go along with the bed and body.

    The major problem with replacing several small scale parts assembled together with far fewer large scale moulded parts assembled together is part replacement/repair due to accidents/metal fatigue/corrosion etc. Replacing a large scale part will be much more expensive both in material as well as in labour costs.

      If one of those large, cast parts is damaged, in some cases the damaged portion can be cut off and a new section welded in place. You do not necessarily have to replace the entire piece which might require disassembly of most of the vehicle. Obviously this is dependent on where the damage is, how severe it is, and the skill of the technician working on the damage. Every case will be different. But, the point is, in some cases, the repair cost will not be as bad as you fear it is.

      @@dawnlightening Where do technicians obtain replacement parts now? A supplier. Tesla, or third parties, have the ability to supply portions of the larger components for this specific scenario. It's not all that complicated. Whether or not they will, I don't know. But the capability is there.

Because, in order to get 'portions of the larger components' a complete large component has to be sacrificed just to provide the part that the technician needs for his welding. In addition, the technician has to specify exactly how to cut the required piece out. All of this defeats the whole purpose of having large moulded parts. This is exactly why vehicle manufacturers (or the manufacturers of ANY machinery) do not do what Tesla is doing, but instead have assemblies of several simpler parts.

    I don't think that machine can do the entire truck in one shot. For the size of the part that machine needs to grow exclamationally for size. You would need more then twice the tonnage. I think they still are going to do a front end back. Just larger pieces needed.

      Depending on the Aluminum used welding can lose up to half it's original strength. This is why Telsa cars can achieve such high ratings in crash safety tests. My father owned a pickup truck that had the back body as a separate piece, after a minor accident it shifted a few degrees and significantly impacting it's driving performance. You want as much of the frame casted in one go as possible.

      Still separate front, central, rear sections. (Maybe the battery pack is still steel?) SS body will add to strength as it’s integral with underbody (chassis), not rubber mounted like every other truck. The strength / rigidity proposition is in the ribbing, can’t do that with steel. This is already a massive press, novel manufacturing, IDRA / LK are hastening slowly.

      Eh. Almost certainly will be two parts, but maybe not. The video does state it will be two pieces.
      It depends on the design entirely though. In both injection molding and die casting a common number you see is roughly 3 tons per square inch of projected area. With 9000 tons this leaves room for 3000 square inches of potential projected frame area.
      It depends how much of that webbing they can eliminate from the design that turns those frame sections into big sails.

    I got the chance to work with Ti on a small project and it's very unique, sooner or later it will probably happen to the Cybertruck.
    "Titanium metal is a very durable metal for engineering applications because this metal is corrosion-resistant and also this metal is very strong and very light. It is 40% lighter than steel but as strong as high-strength steel. So titanium finds applications in things like aerospace."

      Same thing was said when bumpers became integrated in the car body. If you can remember how cars looked back in the '50s, '60s, 70s and even into the '80s? They all had a distinctive bumper in the front and back of the car. Then came the war of better mileage. Automakers had an incentive to streamline the car to get better fuel mileage so they integrated bumpers into the car's frame to lower drag which is great IF everyone drove perfectly and there was no such thing as car accidents....
      Guess what happens when there's a fender bender now? What would have been just a scratch or dent on a bumper now requires replacing the entire panel which is expensive. Maybe there is an ulterior motive of these car manufacturers. Purposeful planned obsolescence- just like they did with Apple iphones and its integrated, non removable batteries. A move that proved so profitable that it was quickly copied by Samsung and other android phone makers.
      As long as humans are at the wheel there's going to be human error and car accidents. Accidents means repairs. VERY expensive repairs if we have to replace the entire car body.

    From what I understand, the "cyber" design language is a cost-saving measure rather than the goal. If this is true I hope there's a "cybercar" made, because I don't care about aesthetics, I just want a cheap, safe electric car. A truck would be cool but I don't need one and I doubt that thing would fit in my garage.

    The only thing I can see happening negatively is WHAT IF the machine breaks down? imagine one of the very internal components breaking down, they have to take the whole thing apart and fix it and assemble it again, while the production line is stopped?? BUT positively, I guess they can use that time constructively to fix any major repairs for the production line, or line production robots, even replace for new ones etc etc

      @@ggrthemostgodless8713 The molten aluminum fills the die in 120 milliseconds! (so says the man from IDRA) But you are right this is not the whole cycle. The whole cycle is about 85 seconds or 45 units per hour. Run the press for 24hours and you have a 1,000 castings.

    It's going to be interesting what the insurance companies are going to charge for the CT. Having to repair the stainless steel panels is going to be expensive. If you get any kind of dent, most likely the panel is going to have to be replaced. You can't bondo it, you can't paint it, maybe you can body hammer it??

    I have just 1 suggestion for your videos.
    When sharing quotes or clippings from newspaper articles, pl. include the date when quote was said and if source is an article, pl. include article title and media org name so that it is easy to look up should anybody want to dig further.
    Edit: I realize that you mentioned when Elon spoke about this during his cyber rodea presentation. A date included alongside will be much appreciated :)

    I foresee a LOT of problems from that rolltop desk style retracting cover on the back. That is a nightmare waiting to happen. Just imagine a little dirt or some gravel getting into that mechanism. The entire thing will be ruined.

      Those figures are subject to change. But, if memory serves me correct, the top trim is supposed to be in the 500 mile range. The entry level in the 300 mile range. If someone has better information, please correct me.
