  • Today Tesla is seen testing a new feature of the Cybertruck, the Crab Driving at Giga Texas. In a clip shared on X on Wednesday by drone pilot and Gigafactory Texas scout Joe Tegtmeyer, you can see Tesla testing out a “crab driving” or “crab walking” technique by using the rear-wheel-steering to maneuver forward while driving at an angle.
Some people may say that this is not a crabwalking, but more of a steering test. But joe Tegtmeyer commented on X and wrote “As a comparison, according to GM, Crabwalk is a unique 4-Wheel Steer mode available on the 2022 GMC HUMMER EV Pickup designed to offer greater vehicle maneuverability when you’re off-roading or parking. The feature allows the angle of the rear wheels to mimic the angle of the front wheels - allowing your vehicle to move more diagonally.”
I am trying to imagine how you would control it, the only thing I can is that you could choose one of three modes when stopped. Same turn, opposite turn and off. Opposite could be progressive. Now FSD - that could use this continuously changing it as needed.
By the say it looks like rear wheel turn radius is proportional to the speed of the vehicle. Do you see the same?
Ok, I have a question, In which situations will this be useful? Could you use it for parallel parking?

3 out of 10 pickup trucks in Southern California just drive like that permanently… because people don’t know how to install lift kits. 😂

Sorry to hear that. Hopefully this feature from Tesla Cybertruck will help to improve the driving for some in Southern California.

Look at the steering ratio!!! That is drive by wire!

is it a good thing or a bad thing?

Should be a good thing, especially since Tesla have removed traditional stalks from the steering column. Drive by wire enables programable steering ratio depending drive conditions (speed, terrain, weather). 3:39 looks like full lock was just over a quarter turn.

Actually Mercedes just introduced 365 degree turn in one of its vehicles. It's like tank turn. I wonder if Tesla will do the same with the Cybertruck too.
