8:13 That's not a "Santa Muerte", that's the Virgin Mary's supposed apparition in Mexico City known as Virgin of Guadalupe with Juan Diego, a local Native American. Virgin of Guadalupe has a church in a place known as "la Villa", near a hill known as Tepeyac, inside Mexico City. And that church is actually the second most visited Catholic church in the world, only behind The Vatican. I would also say that "San Judas", the patron saint of the "lost souls" (criminals) is much more important than "Santa Muerte" in Tepito. San Judas's church is somewhat nearby Tepito. Now, Santa Muerte does have a small cult, specially in places like Tepito, but it's not as big as people make it seem.
There is a caveat to this, the Virgin Mary and the Saints images might not represent what the Catholic Church icons are, but what Santeros use to represent other deities, like Yemaya and other noncristian entities, ( a sort of Witchcraft), I believe it is most likely that those altars are dedicated to the Santeros religion and not to Catholic images, please do a search on Santeria and Syncretism, it is very interesting, I'm not saying though that they are definitely that, but it is well known that in Tepito many follow Santeria.
@@jannadominguez7858 I'm perfectly aware that Santeria exists and how it works. I also know that Santeria is practiced in Tepito. But the altars dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe that you see in the video are common EVERYWHERE in Mexico, not just Tepito. And not only is it a cult that is completely accepted and embraced by the Catholic Church itself, on its highest orders (from the Popes themselves, for over centuries), with the Virgin of Guadalupe being one of the most known supposed Marian apparitions worldwide, on par with the Virgin of Fatima, with the tilma of its apparition being granted a canonical coronation and being almost as important as Turin's shred, and Juan Diego, the supposed native witness of the "miracle" being considered an official saint by the catholic church; but, it is also a practice mainly done by catholics in one the most catholic countries on the world, such as Mexico, both in total numbers and as a % of the population. There's a reason why "Basilica de Guadalupe" is the second most visited church in the world, with literal millions of people going there every year, only behind the Vatican: Mexicans in general are extremely devoted to her, no Santeria or witchcraft involved, to the point that an image of the Virgin of Guadalupe was used by Miguel Hidalgo, the Mexican father of independence, as the flag of Mexico's independence movement. And as for the cult towards San Judas, it is also a super common catholic practice, and people in Tepito embrace him simply because both Catholicism is extremely widespread in Mexico and because he happens to be the patron Saint of lost causes. Also, just as a sidenote. The Virgin of Guadalupe itself is a syncretism, she being a "mestiza" (mixed European and Native heritage), but also between the Virgin from the bible and Tonantzin, I believe, a Mesoamerican goddess. Its image was used by the Spaniards for conversion purposes during the colony because of this.
I wanted to go to Tepito for a few reasons: I love Mexico city and want to know all the different neighborhoods, I am reading a book that is set there, a taxi driver once told me to never go there (that made me curious),and like you, I like to see places where tourists don't go. I watched your video and asked my Airbnb host her opinion. She said it was ok, just don't bring a backpack and watch my phone and money. So off I went. I had a fine time and no issues. I walked around the market, bought a few gifts, stopped at a small art gallery and a church and then headed home. Thank you for making this video!
Loved this video David, and as always I love your perspective. I feel like a lot of times the conversation about Mexico swings hard one way or the other--either everything is a delightful paradise where nothing bad ever happens, or it's filled with "bad hombres" who are out to get you. The truth is always in the middle. Being aware of your surroundings, being careful, and being realistic about where you're at is not the same as being terrified of Mexico or Mexicans. Yes there IS crime. You do have to be careful. But you're exactly right--you have to be careful anywhere you go. I was very cautious of pickpockets in Mexico City, but guess what? I was every bit as cautious about that in Lisbon. In New York City. It's all about being smart and not making yourself an easy mark. It's not unique to Mexico. I think the people who don't get that, who go in with a "Everything is perfect!" attitude are the ones who get in trouble. At any rate, I've been looking forward to this video from you, and I really enjoyed it.
You are right about main stream media ! They had a barrage of stories about travel advisories for certain parts of Mexico this past week. They warn of crime like kidnapping, rape and last but not least dismemberment lol 😂... true enough one needs to take precautions but I do that in Toronto too... it’s no paradise any where ...just the reality of life. I really enjoyed this video. It was well made with intrigue!
You said mainstream media. In the US the MM is controlled by the shadow govt & the CIA. I've seen strong evidence that indicates many historic incidents are hoaxed, incidents like the Charles Manson murder case, Boston Marathon bombing, Sandy Hook, Pittsburgh synagogue shooting, JFK assassination, the Cuban Missle crisis, were all quite possibley faked by the shadow govt and the C I A. I've seen strong evidence that indicates drug cartels do not exist and, like Charles Manson, El Chapo Guzman is fake, it is the New World Order, C I A, and shadow govt that brings drugs into the US. I would not blame the reader for not believing any of these crazy sounding things, I know I would not have believed it 3 months ago - but I've seen the evidence and in each and every case the evidence is compelling. Point is, with the abundance of fakery they manufacture, besides the alleged drug cartels who may be fake, what other negative stories in Mexico might be lies that the NWO, CIA, and shadow govts are feeding to the sheeple via mainstream media? Food for thought: The C I A is headquartered in Langley, Virginia and Merida, Mexico - that should tell you something and raise some important questions.
I went to Tepito after the last big earthquake and ended up trapped for hours. There were no police at the time and Uber drivers wouldn't even try. It is amazing , but very dangerous especially in the small allies within. Glad you made it home safe! I spent plenty of time in Compton, Watts etc and I would never advise that anyone go unless you have friends or connections!

Thanks David. Some of Tepito reminds me of the Mission district in San Francisco, Ca. I go there sometimes to eat out with my friends and we are all over 50 age women. There is beauty everywhere.
San Francisco maybe less humane as I walked to gym for years passing blocks of homeless in tents and on cardboard in this most unequal city as Police periodically sweep their belongings away. Love Tao of David's vlogs and that gay sensibility. Can't wait to expat to MX.
Thanks, David for you travelogs of Mexico, God bless you and be careful in some of these areas of high risk, still I appreciate the way you promote my country, by the way, my wife discover you on TH-cam and we watch you from Portland, Oregon, cheers!

Yes you're back , I just got back to seattle from mexico city, thank you for your videos ,keep them coming please,,, you're the real deal traveler sort of like a journalist
I went there last year and I had an eerie feeling as soon as I got off the metro station. We turned the corner and walked up on a couple getting robbed at gun point by two men on a bike. So we just casually walked the opposite way. But yes street smarts come in handy so you’re not out here moving wreckless. But I loved it.
I’m watching some classic videos of yours - this one I admire! I was too afraid to enter Tepito due to the things I’d seen and heard on TV. Love the dark guitar music.
You are brave my friend, I hardly ever go to Tepito since a got followed twice in my early twenties when I used to live in the city. Great video! Take care.
That was stressful just to watch!... Clapping for the lady who offered us a comic relief right after you asked her: ¿cuánto cuesta? and she goes: A $13 papi... lol.
The Tao of David that was cool. The whole taco stand segment was like a breather, at least it feels like one in the video. Like ok, a taco stand lady smiling, kids smiling back, tacos, laughter, ok... we are still in that Mexico jaja. And we can see that they liked you and respected you for being there, speaking Spanish, ordering some tacos. It showed as well that even inside Tepito we can still find the Mexico we love. Brilliant.

Lol, Morelos is way more dangerous, in tepito the crime that stands up more is pickpocketing, a lil history on tepito, in 70s and 80s it started selling official stuff, but at that time tariffs were really high, so they passed goods from USA illegally so they were so much cheaper, since nafta brought prices down, they started to sell chinese stuff and drugs, thats why is now so dangerous, welcome back daredevil, if you want some company going ther just send me a message, I can go there without issues
The shot with the smashed up building near the end near the santa muerte, I had some guys shouting at me from a distance. I walked swiftly back to Tepito!

Hi David! I really enjoyed this video. Me and my husband Jeff enjoy traveling through Mexico as well. I wanted to ask you about vlogging. I wanted to start a vlog with hubby about our experiences, however I have a lot to learn about it, such as which equipment specifically to use, etc. I would really appreciate some advice. You’re young, and seem pretty tech savvy. Thanks David! 😊🎥
Hey Brenda and Jeff! I'll take it as a compliment as I've just hit 40 LOL. Re equipment I always say you don't need to go crazy with spending, this video's quite old but back then I used a DJI gimbal with a smartphone. I now use a DJI OM4 and a Mavic Mini drone so I have invested since then, but I think to start off with it doesn't matter so much because even most smartphones are good quality and many in 4K. I'd try to have some kind of stabilization as nowadays the whole 'shaky cam' thing is a bit outdated and considering there's so much affordable equipment on offer these days, there's really no excuse! In Mexico I'd probably avoid a proper camera anyway just to avoid drawing attention to yourself.
Hi David! Thanks for the reply. I had to correct my typo. I saw it read equivalent , but I meant to type equipment. I knew you understood what I meant. 😂. I have a camcorder I bought for $80 on Amazon, but I need to upgrade a bit, because my camera doesn’t have a microphone. I still use it for taking videos and pictures. I also use my Canon DSLR and my smartphone. Can I purchase the equipment you use on Amazon as well? The video on Tepito in Mexico City was very interesting. Many places in Mexico are safe, but it’s so widely diverse, so of course there’s places where it’s important to be cautious. Can you send me a link on the equipment you use? That would be awesome! It was nice to hear from you. 😃
Two weeks ago I went into tepito alone without knowing it's tepito, I was just wandering around Plaza Garibaldi and the market attracted my attention. when I walked on the narrow corridor between roadside booth, two young men suddenly punched each other in front of me because they accidently hitted their shoulder. That scene really scared me a lot. I still feel a little frightened when I remind it.
Hello David, I really like the way you thinking, the massage you give at the end of the video is perfect. "Made in Mexico" is a really awful tv show and I prefer "The Tao of David" an authentic person who really shows the truthly México. Cheers Mate. Abrazos y apapachos.
Props to you for going. Not even I go there anymore lol but to be honest I feel that if you’re gonna be scared then don’t even go. One must go to any “dangerous” place with confidence and hey, if it’s gonna happen, it’s gonna happen. So why not just be chill. Good video!
What do you mean by "real" part of México, every part of it its the real part of it, the good and the bad, these seems bias towards "the bad part is the real" and that my amigo is wrong.
Hey Sergio I've talked about this before, Mexicans seem to misunderstand the meaning. Real is POSITIVE, not negative. By real I mean authentic and not a traditional tourist location. For example, I'm from London, I would not call Buckingham Palace 'real' as it's just a boring tourist location, but go to the suburbs and you get more of a real, authentic, local experience that is not mentioned in tourist brochures. For example, Condesa is not 'real' Mexico City as it's been taken over by gringos. I'd rather be somewhere surrounded by locals. Does that help?
Tepito looks interesting and the good looks great , good to see your color back and your bounce in your step ,the David we knew and loved is back after the mini holiday vacation!
Thanks 🙏 for the nice and honest video. I am currently in Mexico City from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. Mexico City is not bad at all if you do your due diligence like everywhere else. My only problem is the bad odor that comes from the sewerage (drainage) system. You can smell it everywhere. Thanks 🙏 again for showing us the other side of the city.
be careful with the Churro Lady, She is the leader, hehehehe, Tepito is the place where you can find anything super cheap. but big companies don't like it. that is why they put to much bad news about tepito.
Went to Tepito last month (tourists from Australia)...cops suggested we get a cab - at midday - but 6'2 me felt safe enough ; was looking for a boxing gym but couldn't find one. Ended up purchasing a speedball off a trader, just love it. Markets there go forever!@
I grew up in San Diego and. when I first moved to Mexico I was quite afraid of Mexico City's reputation. But after living here for a couple years I can tell you, you can have just as much trouble in Banglaore, Los Angeles, or London. In fact I was attacked and beaten in London by a muslim gang, and my friend was stabbed in a different trip in London. Nothing of the sort has happened to me in CDMX.
This was really informative thanks. You're a fantastic travel vlogger. I would never travel into Tepito myself because I don't know the language and I'm skittish of possibly violent situations but this did a lot to ease my mind about my trip to mexico city. I wish you well and I look forward to more of your content. :)
Thank you! I don't blame you for being skittish. My Spanish is only basic but if I knew nothing I would not have gone here for sure. If you're going to more touristy areas you'll have no issues. Mexicans are generally very patient and understanding if you struggle with the language. When are you visiting?

Welcome back! I had mentioned this before, but when I first arrived to Mexico City almost a year ago, I walked all through Tepito. I just figured I was in the "Centro" since it's basically next door😀. They do have a large variety of stuff for sale. I purchased several items but didn't eat anything. I took videos with my cellphone while I held it down closer to my hip, not to be so obvious. I actually didn't feel unsafe, but I wouldn't go there at night that's for sure, including a few other areas in Mexico City. According to the paper I just read yesterday, 2 guys were slaughtered on the streets of Tepito about 11:00pm this past Sunday, drug related of course. Just another day.
Hey man! I would actually go back there and make some purchases, particularly t-shirts and shoes (and Indian cigarettes lol!). Definitely when I wasn't filming no one gave me a second look, the shaky cam bits in this video are when I was doing what you did, hold my phone at my waist!!!
Yep it's all about being streetwise and doing your best to fit in. I wouldn't have gone there on my first day in Mexico City but after a year I feel much more comfortable!
I'm Mexican and even when I visit Mexico City and visit Tepito I get cautious 2 , so yeah it's not about being foreign only. Just like any other big city in any country. Great job
I just visited Tepito with my partner, who grew up there. He was visibly stressed; you need to keep your wits about you at all times. I've visited Mexico City many times, but I would not wander into Tepito by myself, not ever, even though I speak Spanish fluently. There are too many unspoken rules to be safe in neighborhoods like this one. Having written this, I would visit this barrio again, with my partner, of course, and only during the day.

Hehe yeah I realised afterwards when I went to the other place but I'd already filmed it! Thanks for the info!!

@@jannadominguez7858 Not much santeria in Mexico.
FYI, Guadalupe's ayate is the most precious item in México. It's hard to compare them but it would be like the Crown Jewels of México.
And this is reason I started TH-cam in the first place. Glad you had a great time! LOVE CDMX! (back there in December!)
Once again Erin summarises everything perfectly! Hope you're settled back in in GTO!
Food for thought: The C I A is headquartered in Langley, Virginia and Merida, Mexico - that should tell you something and raise some important questions.
thanks friends

If you have Instagram drop me a message on there and I'm more likely to remember! @tao.of.david
Tepito is a world of its own. I remember when my grandma took me there , I saw a bunch of rare items .

Hola! Exactly my view, if you get mugged, you get mugged! Walk with confidence and purpose!
Tepito looks interesting and the good looks great , good to see your color back and your bounce in your step ,the David we knew and loved is back after the mini holiday vacation!

jajaja yes I did not trust the churro lady, you could tell she was the leader of the criminal underworld!

i avoid goingto tepito or la morelos at all costs.. ur crazy. maybe bc u havent seen or felt it first hand, but that was a crazy idea my friend
1:28 you just described 99% of foreign vloggers in Mexico, respect, subscribed.
comfortable Airbnb in Condesa. No way!! Thanks man!
@@davidostrowski679 I just saw on your other vids you were staying in doctores, keeping it real XD
@@Zenboy23 hey man, not anymore, that was in September. I'm in Napoles at the moment. I have somewhere long term in Narvarte from March. No Condesa! LOL
hola que bueno que ya estas aqui me da mucho gusto jajaja saludos wero bienvenido otravez
Gracias Mari!
Sadly David, you are right, police seldom enter the area except to charge their quotas. Last time I went there were many Chinese selling their merchandise, I think now they are gone. Things are getting really rough, it's not what it used to be.
Balls of steel. I still wouldn't recommend Tepito to anyone tbh.
Hello, my father is from Tepito and he says he will never return to this area or Mexico again. You are either very brave or something else. Nevertheless, thank you for shedding light on the place where my father was born.
Haha, something else! Thanks, I appreciate fully that those raised there would have a plethora of horrendous stories (if I did this again I'd point that out), so thanks for highlighting it. You're welcome V! I'll be in CDMX again in a few weeks.
Dude, you are a BadAss!! Lol!! Love that you are so adventurous....some can live vicariously through you while others can secure valuable tips while they travel and explore the world. #respect!
Gracias Carlos! Always a badass!
Kinda had that Roma movie feel/vibe to it, very interesting 🙄 thanks for taking us to another world you are very bold & brave my amigo👍until then Viva Mexico y Viva The Tao of David 🤠
Gracias Carlos! Glad you enjoyed! I still have not seen Roma!
@@davidostrowski679 a bucket list movie for sure 😉
@@carlosc4663 The Roma was really rough in the 70's and later. It has turned into a hipster colonia now.
@@nachojimenez2420 wow that is interesting Mexico is Great!!!!
hey dave! Welcome to Mexico.
You were very brave to go to tepito,
I am very afraid although I would like to go 🤭
Hola Vero! Gracias! It's definately an idea to go with someone to look out for you! Thanks for watching!
Excellent, as always. Apparently, we were almost in CDMX at the same time! We left on Jan. 2. Did not spend time in Tepito, though. I like the music on this one.
Thankyou! Hope you had a great time! I'm using Epidemic Sound now, much better music!
@@davidostrowski679 My wife and I loved it! Believe it or not, I think the highlight for me was our little neighborhood in Escandon. Nice shops, friendly people, great street food! Anyhow, I always enjoy your videos.
@@desertpair2 i'm in napoles so close!
@@davidostrowski679 Yeah! What hotel? Nice neighborhood?
@@desertpair2 lol i can't afford hotels! I'm in an airbnb. Nice area yeah, quite quiet! Moving back to Narvarte in March!
Welcome back my friend!!! Please don’t go to places like that alone , and you are right all cities in the world have crime.
Hola Hector! I hope you're good! Next video is Los Pinos so not dangerous!!
Just like South central and South Side and other 👍
What gear do you use for your recordings, David? If I may ask?
It's all in the description amigo. A smashed old samsung smartphone and a 3 year old gimbal I got in Tokyo... also broken LOL
So it is, David. Thank you.
As a retired professional photographer, I know, that it's the user that create the story - not whatever fancy gear utilized.
I've seen a lot of shitty work made with expensive gear, and great work made with cheap gear, The most important component in any camera is the user.
Well done.
@@tommyvictorbuch6960 well said sir!

I need to come back to PV at some point!!
You are right David any city and particular big cities like Mexico, New York, London , Rome , etc ,they're dangerous.Tepito used to be very popular in the 70 's and 80's, great video
Gracias Clara! I'm glad someone agrees with me! ;-)!
Thanks great video
thanks you're welcome!
Thanks for sharing this with us, now I know one place to avoid...Love CDMX !!!
CDMX rules!
Tepito is very alike the London East End before the gentrification. People in those areas is something like the "cockney" londoner used to be.
Interesting take! Maybe that's why it felt familiar!
Glad to see you are still kicking ( well , at least in January ;) ) - God bless ^^
