    The Tao of David I'm an American who grew up in Mexico City - my father was an exec for an American company that expanded operations into Mexico. We (dad, mom, 4 kids) drove all over the country in our big white station wagon on countless family vacations, visiting so many places, including the most far away. For my birthday in late November of 1963, I asked to go to a performance at the Palacio de Bellas Artes, which you show here in your video. The performance was suddenly cancelled. Why? JFK was assassinated and the entire country stopped. Literally everything closed in mourning for losing that great man. Mexico loved JFK. I'm so happy to see you and others tell the world about Mexico. Thank you. I have not been back for too long, so your material is wonderful to watch.

      Hello sir! Thanks for watching! That's an amazing story. Obviously JFK was before my time but my mother was 12/13 at the time and she used to tell me how she remembers it well. I've been to Dallas and Havana before so it was interesting for me to learn more about the history

    I visited Mexico City in October, 2019, for a week. For years, I always had the misconception that Mexico City was a crime-ridden, polluted, crowded mess of a city. I found it to be the opposite--except yes, it was crowded, but in a delightful way. It reminded me in many ways of Hong Kong, where I lived as a child in the mid-1960s, which I thoroughly loved. I am looking forward to the virus to go away so I can go back to CDMX!

      @@davidostrowski679 Hi David, from another David. I went to a British school, King George V School in HK, for two years. The first year was quite an adjustment; the second was wonderful. The Hong Kong of that era does not really exist anymore, but my many memories, and photos, remind me. My dad opened up the first office of Caterpillar Tractor Company in the Far East in 1965. Yes, I loved that place. Nice hearing from you here.

You are not alone, you have many viewers around the world that supports you. you can also make many friends from the U.K., Canada, USA, and other parts of Europe that live in Mexico City. About you feeling like home in Mexico, I had heard that from many visitors, there is something about Mexico that no many places have. Hello! I've seen your channel and especially the videos from Mexico and Mexico City and I love them. It is very interesting to see the point of view of a foreigner, about Mexico City and I am surprised to see how fascinated they are of the city. I appreciate how well you talk about my country and especially about the city, sometimes Mexicans, we do not see how beautiful our country is, much less the city, sometimes it seems ugly, chaotic, dirty, backward, insecure, etc. I thank you again for the love you have for Mexico City.

    • @davidostrowski679

      Hey Fabian! Thanks for your comment! You sum up what I love about Mexico City, the noise, the chaos, the people are very vocal and lively. It's difficult to explain why I feel so at home here - the ease of getting around, convenience and general atmosphere. And most of all, there's so much variety in terms of neighbourhoods compared to other cities.

I think Doctores will be okay as long as you don't walk around at night. It looks like you are staying on a main street. It will be interesting to hear your opinion of Santa Fe. Heya! I am an American (Californian) of Mexican descent who will be moving to CDMX in two weeks. Firstly, I hear a bit of an East London accent??! Is that where you’re from? I lived in London as well. Secondly, I know you’re learning Spanish and I speak both English and Spanish fluently. In the spirit of learning, here’s a tip; when it’s two Ls like “Bellas Artes,” it’s pronounced “Beh-yahs” not “Beh-llahs,”-that’s Italian. 😉
    Lastly, you’re right that Mexico City is an amazing place, hence the reason I’m moving there. The US media has done it a great disservice with all of the negative reporting that has spread globally. I’m glad people like you are making these videos and showing the public the “real” Mexico and the real Mexico City. I plan to do the same via my blog!!
    Interestingly, I was talking to two people from Hungry yesterday in LA (where I’m from) and they noted there’s a lot of buzz right now in the global trotter community about CDMX. I’m so excited to get the opportunity to live there!!
    I am a bit jealous that you will be there for Mexican Independence Day, 16 Sept, a celebration at the Zocalo like no other! I missed it by a couple of weeks 😞
    I appreciate your videos as they give me insights to things I was iffy about (like the subway and Colonia Doctores) and also give me ideas of places I want to visit. Good work!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

    • @davidostrowski679
      @davidostrowski679  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Becca! Thanks for the awesome message! I'm originally from West London (about a mile from London Heathrow Airport) but the area I grew up in is quite 'common' and my 'Estuary English' accent is often confused for East London Cockney. I worked in East London for a few years so that didn't help! If I'm in London maybe at a bar with friends my accent goes full East London!!
      Mexico City is definitely growing in terms of popularity, largely due to the US media's inaccurate portrayal. It really helps that Mexicans are so passionate about their country and so engaged, I love it!
      I'll be in the Zocalo on Saturday night filming a video but unfortunately already had English lessons booked for the Sunday.
      jajaja thanks for the Spanish tips, I'm not actively learning to be honest, I'm just picking it up as I go along. I lived with a Venezuelan guy in Colombia which really helped. OMG the LL sound, I always mix up Spanish with Italian!! I studied German for 7 years so that is far more advanced, I wish I learnt Espanol instead!!
      What's the name of your blog?

      All my friends and family left the United States for Mexico by the early 90's. I left Los Angeles then and moved to DC, then I moved back to California, only Palm Springs, in 2000. Then I stayed a few years, but its over. I live in Puerto Rico now. It's pretty here. And they don't see themselves as Latin Americans as much as, even I feel, I would like to go to Mexico. My mom lived there and she loved it, and its the best food! But I'm 55, and I've been in Puerto Rico 5 years. I have to make it home...

    Amigo, also next time you find yourself in El Zocalo I highly highly recommend you go inside the Gran Hotel Ciudad de Mexico. It's exactly in the southwest corner of the square. It has an absolutely stunning lobby. I’ve been there about five times to show my gringo friends and only once it was closed for a private event so hopefully it’s open when you go. Go during the day though 'cause the roof is stained glass. There is also a restaurant at the top overlooking the square so you can have a small snack or a full on meal. That’s also where they filmed the opening scene of the last Bond movie.

    So glad to see you back in cdmx. I think that once visitors or potential visitors work through the blatantly erroneous misconceptions about Mexico (generally promoted by conservative American media), people like you eventually realize it is an amazing place with an endless wealth of culture and food and welcoming people and things to do or see, and well, just an excess of life to enjoy and even contribute to. CDMX, in particular , is like the proverbial Hotel California-you can check out, but you can never leave!

    Hola Amigo, its great to have to back in CDMX. We love you too!!
    Just south of UNAM, about 5-10mins by Metrobus is Piramide de Cuicuilco. It’s estimated to be the oldest surviving archeological site in the Valley of Mexico built around 800 B.C., 2000 plus yrs before the Aztecs arrived!! You just have to take the Insurgentes Metrobus line (line 1) and get off at Villa Olimpica Station. Hope you can visit it! Greetings and great video as always!

      Oh absolutely! I've probably learnt more about the world, people and myself in 6 years than I ever did before that! Definitely there were things I thought back in the day that I've changed my opinions on. The final part of my final Mexico City video this year summed it up! Definitely right and wrong on many things! If I wasn't working at the same time things would have been different at times, but without simultaneously working I wouldn't have been able to be there in the first place. You know what I mean!

      I like the fact that you're a very humble guy you're just like any other guy on the streets, no pretentions, it's just you!
      Even take time to reply to your "fans" or subscribers
      You blend, mingle and mix with what Mexico and its people is, no jumping on the "oh, I love Mexico" train like so many people do just for the views and subscribers, your curiosity and enjoyment of time and place it's genuine as seen throughout all your videos from North to South East and West, hopefully you're back sometime soon and I'll be there as well to join in some adventure along with you
      Though I'm away from home 🇲🇽 right now hope to be home sometime soon back👍

    • @davidostrowski679
      @davidostrowski679  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      oh it's very important to engage with viewers! Yes sometimes people can be absolute dicks but in many cases both in Serbia and Mexico, it turns out many people are well educated and have brains and actually help me consider other views, which has been the best part of this! And healthy debates are always good, and disagreeing on things isn't always a bad thing. That's what being an adult is about!
      Have a great weekend!

    Great video! You made us very excited for our next visit (or 3rd in 3 years) coming up in January (on our way back from Oaxaca and Puerto Escondido). I am happy for you that you are where you want to be. I am not sure you did this before, but check out the free Diego Rivera murals in the National Palace building (you have to take ID to get in). I also recommend the Museo Nacional de Arte MUNAL. It is about 1/2 block behind the Palacio de Bellas Artes. The building itself is stunning and well worth the admission.

      My understanding is that, after the revolution, Rivera was commissioned to paint the history of Mexico in the government building to help the many illiterate people understand their history. The size and subject of the mural in the National Palace sets it apart from what you saw in the Palacio.
