    My working theory is that Ted is actually a white dog covered in engine oil from being petted all the time.
    Another great episode, don't ever try to get too polished and professional. Now in the right frame of mind to take the starter motor and lift pump off the tractor. I realise where I have been going wrong with my mechanical work is the lack of suitable head wear.

    Good evening gents. I think you will find that Land Rover was employed as early ARV by the Met Police at Heathrow airport. The amber lights was for use airside. AYL with T suffix was a Met number plate of my memory serves me correctly.

    Excellent bit of finessing with the large adjusting spanner.
    Oh, see if you can get in touch with the Fire Safety Officer at your local hospital. They are likely to have hundreds of retired extinguishers (Foam, Powder & CO2) that they'd probably let you have for free. - Speaking from experience.

    I discovered by complete accident that if you spray loose nut on what ever is burning hot by torches the loose nut will evaporate in a cloud of toxic fumes before it reaches what ever is seized up. So mechanics like myself and millions of others think that using a copious amount of heat and loose nut will do the trick. Well the only "loose" you will get is a temporary buzz of loose nut fumes without actually loosening anything. I've discovered this while working on an exhaust manifold of a Ford car. The torches were out of Acetylene so I had to improvise. I needed the manifold bolts so it was imperative to spare them. So I went for a simple propane torch and I had the idea of using 15W40 and I saw the rust gobble up the oil where it was mostly needed. The heat was enough to loose the exhaust manifold bolts but not hot enough to vaporise the thick oil so the lubricant got into the threads and got loose easy. So less heat more lubricant is the idea instead of superheat and not lubricant in the threads at all.

    • @MrHewes
      @MrHewes  ปีที่แล้ว +8

      There’s a good reason I torched the fuel tanks out, the official way is to remove the exhaust branch manifold, however they are extremely fragile and hard to replace, I would never run a cent with belly fuel tanks because they are known for back firing. Also without the belly tanks it allows for regular maintenance, you may have “restored” a cent but I actually use these things a lot not just paint them and park them in a shed for 25 years. The GUE had seized up solid because the spark plugs had rotted though. With powerful modern Batterys it’s totally pointless anyway. Especially in an ARV.
      If you haven’t had to use a Torch on a centurion you haven’t worked on one that has been abandoned out in the elements for 30 years.

      I agree with removing belly tanks and pup engine, they just get in the way, so we did that. Just didn’t involve so much torching and bashing with a hammer.😊
      The one we restored was ex-Canadian army, 1952, parked outside since mid 70’s so getting on 50 years.
      We’re a museum with about 80 running vehicles and we drive them around regularly for the public. The old girl runs like a charm. Doesn’t backfire!
      The only reason I might consider putting a pup engine back in is the power traverse draws about 150 amps when going full bore during shows and even with 4 batteries they get dragged down pretty quick.
      I use a torch all the time, nothing to beat it for freeing up rusty shit.

      It's unlikely to be a SAS land Rover, unless they stole it from the MET at Heathrow. I wouldn't rule out that possibility. The beggers will steal anything that's not fastened down. I've seen them do that too!
