Use caution when purchasing batteries from Lowe's. I purchased two new batteries and dropped off my old batteries at the same time. I returned the next day and suddenly nobody knew anything about it. They ripped me off for 30 bucks. I now go to my local O'Reilly's for all my battery needs.
Helpful hent on buying any battery, always check the manufacturer date sticker on the battery it will say a letter for month and a 2 digit year code. Example C24 means March 2024. Walmart and everyone that sells batteries they can set on a shelf for months even a Year or two. The battery supply company doesn't remove the old batteries they sit until they are sold. If you buy from a store that has them in racks remove the front ones new ones will be in very back of rack. A battery that has a date code over a month old is considered a second and should be discounted in price or checked if good before you buy it! I've seen batteries for sale at my Home Depot that were 2 year old!!
Most batteries will have a little round sticker about the size of a quarter, and that's the manufacture date. A-24 is a January 24 battery, some use the alphabet for the month. Interstate does em different, but anyways try and get the freshest one. I had a customer ask me why his 3yo battery went dead ,and I revealed it was almost 4yo as the date code indicated he purchased it like 11mo after the date code on it.
Best garden/Lawn Tractors are the 2021 Craftsman T240 turn tight..2022 the Newer version came out and downgraded I'm very glad I bought mine in 2021 I wouldn't trade for any John Deere..

When I was a little kid we had a hand raised female we named “Chippy”. When she was old enough she was let outside to do as she pleased and eventually had her own Squirrel family. She would come when called and would visit often for snacks. She lived to an old age living her best wild Squirrel life but never really left her people family either.
@@shannonwhitaker9630 I missed it. I thought it was just a convenient place to put it out of the way but makes much more sense as a bottle warmer. No muss, no fuss and it'll never be overheated.
The $69.00 Viking charger from Harbor Freight has a rejuvenating setting that is totally radical. It works like a charm in bringing dead batteries back to life. Learned about it in Kitplanes magazine from a few years ago. I liked it so much that I bought a second one. I use one to annually charge my riding mowers battery at the start of mowing season every year. The other I use for car batteries. Love ‘em!!
A bad new part is a mechanic’s worst nightmare. We had a pet flying squirrel 🐿️ when I was a kid. He was a lot of fun. Keep it as a shop squirrel!!!! Thanks!
I rescued a Flyer over 10 years ago and he is still kicking. He is VERY spoiled. He doesn't get around like he used to but he tries. When we got him we looked for books about them so we would know how to care for him. 10 years ago there was only 1 ( one ) book that we could find. Almost EVERY SINGLE THING in that book was WRONG. Fortunately now there are several books available. Unfortunately, they ALL seem to have information that is at least partially incorrect. So, if you ever get another one just contact a couple of the people here on TH-cam that have videos of healthy flyers.
@@JohnSmith-pl2bk I don't think that is a good idea because where I live we are not permitted to have "Wild Animals" as pets. They would come and remove him and release him in the wild. Good tips on the battery. Working 45 years as a GM Master Tech and an ASE Certified Master Automobile tech I found the same issue on customers cars many times. Always test and charge any battery before use.
I've bought the WM lawn batteries for decades. I always get the better 300 amp ones vice the 225 amp cheaper ones. ALWAYS put them on a trickle charger when you get home and top them off. All lead acid batteries need to be fully charged before you use them to get full service out of them. Love that you helped the baby squirrel too. You do awesome work here and seem like an awesome person as well. Thank you!
God bless you for taking care of the baby squirrel. ~ Bottom line on all batteries, they are not made near as good as some years back. Typically I’ve had good results with Walmart batteries, they used to be made by Johnson Controls but I can’t say they all are now. Cheers from Chicago.
Thank you. I never thought about that on a battery, and I found the same problem with new parts being faulty. Sadly it's a standard practice, that the manufacturer knows a percentage of parts or equipment will be faulty when shipped. How many depends on the manufacturers standard and quality control.
Young squirrels are one of the few animals that will seek out help from humans if they get lost or are hungry. They are actually very smart little critters and they are soooo stinking CUTE lol.
Roadrunners will come by for a visit, a snack or medical attention. Broken legs are repairable with the right vet. You'll have a roadrunner buddy for life.
We just did our best to save four young grey squirrels over the summer. They were coming to us and were so precious. We had a sanctuary come and they said only one made it. They were without their mom for too long they said. Not sure what happened to the mom.
such a cute lil squirrell, for the BEES problem , use your high pressure washer with the car foaming bottle, use Dawn with some warm water in the bottle and set to max foam, they breathe thru thier exoskeleton so the foam will kill them really fast and ya dont have to use the nasty chemicals that the wasp killer sprays have :)

I'll add a vote for LUCKY. To feed him a can of KMR and Pecans that have been ground into powder. I had rased CHIP and had him for 10 years was my best frend !
65 years ago, my sister found a baby squirrel on the ground, and did an official 'lil girl adoption '. Iggy was his name. Iggy lived in the house and slept with me, as me and Mom were home all day long with him. Iggy was an adopted natural disaster! Chewed the tops off Mom's curtains! But I started eating all my oatmeal because Iggy and I would race the eating competition every day! 😂❤
I found a baby squirrel on the ranch that I managed. It was even smaller than yours. I gave him to a friends daughter that immediately fell in love with him and named him Porthos like one of the three musketeers. He was incredibly friendly and playful until he reached puberty. He then became very grouchy and would bite people. Needless to say he could not live with his adoptive family so I had to take him back to the ranch. I dyed the tip of his tail to see how he was doing in the trees. He did very well which made my friends daughter happy.
Your videos are always helpful. One thing once a person has a good battery but removes it Don't store it directly on concrete. If a wood board, cardboard, or plastic isn't put under it the battery will be shorted out and ruined. I think even a piece of metal is ok. You've probably already covered this but it can be a reminder. Thanks so much for your help and I always hit the thumbs up because I know it will be great
The idea of not putting a battery on cocrete is over 50 years old. battery cases have changed over the years and they do not discharge through the concrete any longer.
I also always put a brand new battery on the charger! Before I install it! On any car motorcycle or any piece! Of equipment that requires one! On a trickle charge, of course!
I was told it will add at least a year to the life of the battery by a battery manufacturer. It allows the battery to form properly before putting under load.
I would normally do that but I just had to replace the battery in my car. The battery wouldn't hold the charge at all but I could start the car by jumping it. I just drove to the store and installed it in the parking lot. I did put it on the charger when I got home though. Edit: There was some cursing involved for the engineers. I had to remove the engine cross braces, the fuse box, and loosen the alternator to get the battery out. 😳
What I’m amazed at by watching your videos is that people bring in junk or near junk with no care keeping their machinery clean. It’s not rocket science to touch up paint or to keep the engine grease free without globs of dirt, leaves, …or animal nests on them….I clean my 14 small engines after EACH use, refill gas & oil (if needed) feeling confident they will fire up when needed the next time. Thanks girl and keep em coming…..--Sixgun Jack
What do you recommend to keep tires inflated and not going FLAT ?? Thanks I had a squirrel for a pet for at least five years. For some reason the offspring took off and went wild.
After the first year of owning a John Deere I sprayed the bottom and top of the deck with bed liner. It's a d105 I've had about 8 years now. No signs of rust
Every time I've bought a battery at walmart I ask if it's charged. (for fun) Guy tells me yes. Get it home and test it and never surprised when it's not. Put an undercharged battery in most newer cars and you risk smoking the alternator. Thanks for helping Rocky.
A bigger risk might be smoking the starter or even more likely, the battery itself. Low potential => more current draw. I say battery because slower start, possibly longer crank drawing more Amps produces more heat across the battery's internal buss bars. (This presumed the battery had enough reserve to produce the required mag field in the alternator.)
It is best practice to fully charge a new battery with a trickle charger before use. Think of the amount of time and money that the manufacture saves by just putting a fast bulk charge that usually "works" for the customers.
we rescued a baby squirrel when i was young raised him until he was old enough to release. and he kept coming back. we named him Chippy. eventually he didn't come back we like to think he found a cute girl squirrel. Chippy would be a good name. best of luck to you little guy.
I replaced the battery in my Craftsman LT2000 only to still have a no start issue. It turned out to be the solenoid so I replaced that and the mower cranked right up. I had been having an intermittent problem with starting up and the battery was old, so I thought the issue was the battery. Anyhoo, I fixed it myself. The solenoid on my mower was a pain in the butt to get to as it is located behind the battery under the seat. Got it done. Good luck with the squirrel. Oh hey, I'd love to see a video about the Corvette and the Cougar, really cool cars!!!
I saw this back when the post was new, but forgot what the title warned of. Going to get a new battery today for my 4 wheeler, so watched again. And since the little squirrel followed you around, you should name him Shadow. Not sure if you still have him, but that was very nice of you to take him in. I do the same, wouldn't be right to leave him on his own. Thanks for all your videos!! By the way, Mom and Grandparents are from Cabot Ark. Sure is purdy there!!
14 years ago, a friend and I found a 5wk old abandoned baby squirrel. I have experience with bottle feeding kittens so I got a bottle and some kitten formula and showed her and her boyfriend how to nurse the squirrel. He was kept in a 2 level rabbit run in their garage until he was old enough to be on his own. Other squirrels came in to see him so he had some interaction. By 12wks of age or so, the cage was left open and "Rocky" was free to leave on his own. After a day he did. He was a black squirrel so she could see him around the neighborhood. He was socializing just fine with the other squirrels.
You are so right about even new parts being bad right out of the box so its possible on anything! I will say i've had great luck with those Walmart Everstart batteries (I have 3 of them, 2 in rider lawnmowers and 1 in my daily driver pickup) and they are awesome and an Walmart Everstart even won a battery showdown on the Project Farm channel so for anyone looking for a battery they are a pretty good choice.
Always check the build date on a battery before purchasing. Only one or two companies make the majority of all batteries no matter what the name brand. I wonder how many new batteries are shorted out by people without battery knowledge,
I have a Craftsmen riding mower with a 7-year-old Walmart battery. Works just fine! Plus, I keep it on a Battery Tender charger. Really does help to extend the life of a battery. Also, the same for my boat battery.

John Deere hoods break in half on farm tractors that cost $250,000 too. They don't care because they're engineered to break just after the warranty expires.
@@jameshill4900 lol. NO. Have you priced a 400ish HP row crop tractor or an articulated tractor? It's criminal that the hoods barely outlast the warranty.
She forgot to check the oil in the mower before she started it. Don't worry. Chickanic is an expert, and she knows what she is doing. Be careful buying anything from Lowe's, esp. appliances.
So couldn’t you have asked the manager to review recorded security footage to prove you brought in the batteries ?
Awww, that's one lucky squirrel ! I'd call him "Chip!" Also, I about laughed my butt off when you stuck that bottle into the bottle warmer, LOL! Great Idea! Hope you both do well. Have a great day! He really is cute!
When I was a little kid we had a hand raised female we named “Chippy”. When she was old enough she was let outside to do as she pleased and eventually had her own Squirrel family. She would come when called and would visit often for snacks. She lived to an old age living her best wild Squirrel life but never really left her people family either.
I think most either missed the nurse bottle warming technique or didn’t understand what they just witnessed lol
@@shannonwhitaker9630 I missed it. I thought it was just a convenient place to put it out of the way but makes much more sense as a bottle warmer. No muss, no fuss and it'll never be overheated.
@@shannonwhitaker9630 This is the best of all. Let her go, and she's still your friend.

Could you write articles/make your own vids for YT?
@@JohnSmith-pl2bk I don't think that is a good idea because where I live we are not permitted to have "Wild Animals" as pets. They would come and remove him and release him in the wild. He wouldn't make it 2 HOURS in the wild because he has NEVER been in the wild. I got Your reply because you tagged me correctly. But from my tablet my comment on is no longer visible. TH-cam has been removing my comments for a while now. At least from my point of view they are gone. But evidently it is still visible to others.
Good tips on the battery. Working 45 years as a GM Master Tech and an ASE Certified Master Automobile tech I found the same issue on customers cars many times. Always test and charge any battery before use.
You're awesome...love the baby squirrel segment. That JD mower needs an owner who has respect for equipment. You look great in bibbed overalls!
I may have missed the part where you checked the alternator and where you fixed reverse gear. Or did spraying it with water fix both of these.
HAHAHAHA
That ain't bees! Those are hornets and mean as can be.
Chickanic: I always love watching your videos. Even though I still use the Wheel Horse tractor that I bought new in 1977 ( Those old Kohlers are bulletproof. ), I still learn different maintenance tips that you share.
Also, take care of your little buddy. I'm sure he appreciates the kindness.
Great advice to have the battery tested at the store!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you for looking after the little squirrel...🥰
Squirrel is one lucky pet. Call him LUCKY.
☕️☕️🎶🎵🎶
I'll add a vote for LUCKY. To feed him a can of KMR and Pecans that have been ground into powder. I had rased CHIP and had him for 10 years was my best frend !
Also put your old but clean socks in his box they treat them like sleeping bags
I love hearing the chickens in the background. Sounds just like our place.
I've never seen a store sell a full battery. Charger is it's first destination.
LOVED the ziplock bag idea over the oil filter!!!
Thanks for the battery advice.
Thanks so much for your help and I always hit the thumbs up because I know it will be great
When did they develop elctrode-conducting concrete?
Thanks for taking care of Mother Nature's wee one...and the JD mower
I enjoy your videos and all the advice.. But I love that Couger in the background.
Awe, such a good woman for taking care of that creature.
Super great tip about testing the battery at the store. Cheers from Montana!
That lawn mower sure has been neglected by it's owner. Thank you for video. Blessings to you.
That squirrel is so cute!!
Thank you soooo much for helping out that little cute as heck baby squirrel , your awesome!!!
I’d recommend replacing the discharge chute… As it is now you could step into a spinning blade!😂
Name the little guy "Gilligan", as he's going to be your little buddy for life!
What do you recommend to keep tires inflated and not going FLAT ?? Thanks
I had a squirrel for a pet for at least five years. For some reason the offspring took off and went wild.
After the first year of owning a John Deere I sprayed the bottom and top of the deck with bed liner.
It's a d105 I've had about 8 years now. No signs of rust
Does grass stick to the bedliner material?
@@stevefroslie5318 it does not any more than it normally would.
Great idea! I just bought a new generic mower, and was wondering about rustproofing it. I think I'll give that a go! Thanks!
I've done it to wheelbarrows, metal tow behind trailers. Just be sure not to get it on any threaded parts. top of the bolt is fine.
(This presumed the battery had enough reserve to produce the required mag field in the alternator.)
the sammich bag over the oil filter is smart. imma have to remember that. thanks!!!
Mmmmmm…sammiches…
I swear the feeling you get after sharpening a mower blade is just so satisfying!
It is best practice to fully charge a new battery with a trickle charger before use. Think of the amount of time and money that the manufacture saves by just putting a fast bulk charge that usually "works" for the customers.
It looks like that mower was neglected for a while. lol
You do a good job with maintenace and repairs!
Cute little squirrel needs you!
we rescued a baby squirrel when i was young raised him until he was old enough to release. and he kept coming back. we named him Chippy. eventually he didn't come back we like to think he found a cute girl squirrel.
Thank you, squirrel mama💙
Bag over oil filter is genius! Thanks, that just saved a lot of frustration! I use a pokey to put a hole in filter and drain it before removing…
Clearly the squirrel's name should be Rocky.
IYKYK. 😊
I was gonna say the same thing , first name that popped in my head . lol
Just as long as his buddy the MOOSE doesn't show up too!!!!
I wonder how many new batteries are shorted out by people without battery knowledge,
I took my load tester in Walmart to check lawnmower batteries, most didn’t even have 9 volts
Went to TSC and got a good battery
@@philliphall5198 Good idea
I have a Craftsmen riding mower with a 7-year-old Walmart battery. Works just fine! Plus, I keep it on a Battery Tender charger. Really does help to extend the life of a battery. Also, the same for my boat battery.
a squirrel and a bottle holder, Bre got it all...!
The Baggie Trick is simply Amazing. I'll use that with everything. Thanks so much.
I have bought walmart batterys and there great period
I agree, Walmart batteries a made by Johnson Controls in NC they also make the Interstate and Die Hard Gold batteries.
Got my battery at Rural King for $25 3 years ago and I keep a maintainer on it…no problems..
The moment you showed us the baby squirrel I lost all interest in lawnmowers and batteries. You're sweet to help the little one.
Nice channel. By the way, you're one of the few people that makes use of the oil quart geometry the way it was intended. (Side nearest the spout up so the air can get behind the flow of oil...no glug, glug). Cute lil' squirrel! Hope he finds his momma.
John Deere hoods break in half on farm tractors that cost $250,000 too. They don't care because they're engineered to break just after the warranty expires.
Did you add one extra zero?
@@jameshill4900 lol. NO. Have you priced a 400ish HP row crop tractor or an articulated tractor? It's criminal that the hoods barely outlast the warranty.
@@ohmbug10 I thought you meant the hoods cost
$250,000. Yes farm equipment is expensive.
She forgot to check the oil in the mower before she started it. Don't worry. Chickanic is an expert, and she knows what she is doing. The battery in my truck is from Walmart and so I never go anywhere without good jumper cables, a battery charger, some tools, and a phone number for a mobile mechanic. I only need that stuff every 2 years when the battery passes away. Thanks for helping that squirrel. That is why everyone loves her and fixing lawn mowers is just icing on a piece of cake.
And the music is even better when you adjust the playback speed to 1.5.
She also didn't show checking the blad balance after sharpening them.
Thanks again. LOL... The guy that owns that John Deere... Votes! That is scary.
The Foot Chopper 1000 turned out pretty good! Cute baby squirrel!
Thanks for sharing this !!!!! 😊🙏👍❤️
i know i know this is not what your talking about.
some one has good taste. a cougar and a vet. thank you for letting this old guy see the cougar. one of "my" favorites.
FYI... for oil filter removal, try that oil wrench with a rubber strap. I tried one a few yrs ago and OMG... best thing ever. I have a bunch of oil filter wrenches and adapters but haven't used them since. Try one out and see if it's right for you. They're only a few bucks
Great content as always. Thanks for your dedication and pleasant demeanor
I'm guessing since he was in the mower section the customer had decided, " I'm not fixing this old POS". Went to Lowe's. Saw the prices of new mowers. Then immediately thought the old girls got plenty of on her ill call the repair shop. Is that a D105, ill probably be doing belts on one soon. By the way you have a shop squirrel and his name is John Deere.
You're awesome! Love that baby squirrel - probably the best visitor you could have included on your channel!! 😅
