I still come back to this interview. I firmly believe this guy (and his whole team, he isn't the only one) are the reason behind 1. The Xbox One failing at launch 2. Rushing Halo 2 Anniversary into Halo MCC and breaking the whole game. 3. Rushing the Halo spin-off into Halo 5 further hurting the brand 4. Forcing Gears of War 4 into existence (at least it was decent, but unnecessary) 5. Forcing many console players into Playstation 6. Making me jump to PC 3/4ths into the generation. But you know. I am kind of glad that happened. Because now: Xbox games are on PC. Gamepass Sony is now making similar tone-deaf mistakes. Sony also putting their games on PC. Halo MCC being rebuilt. Halo Infinite learning from all the Halo 5 mistakes. Sometimes a company has to get humbled.
Ppl often forget that Phil Spencer was on that team. So I don't think they changed just because he was on the team but rather they changed because they were forced to after this disastrous launch.
@@CoolsBreeze Phil Spencer likely didn’t have much say in the terrible direction Xbox was going right up until the backlash and the CEO position being open.
That was painful. He was so confident people would meekly dump the old product and flock to their new product it clearly hadn't occurred to him the instant response might be: "Stick to 360".
Yet they are still here and are doing the right steps toward future and next console generation.... But for sure, this man hurt Xbox brand big time.....
@@Balnazzardi "the right steps" what are you talking about. What Xbox tried to do with those anti-consumer policies was pure evil. Xbox tried to skew the entire landscape of gaming against the consumer and they're dead to me forever.
@@HULKHOGAN1 well lets see: - They tripled the amount of their 1st party studios -With Xbox One X and with Scarlett they took the attitude to make best console possible -With Xcloud streaming service they are giving even more choices to play their games where you want and on what device you want (excluding other consoles) -Gamepass offers huge value for those who would like to use it and combined with Xcloud they could really have the "Netflix of Games" in their hands. So Ye sry If you still feel that way from 2013, but thats ancient history....MS abandoned those things already way back 2013-2014 that you are still mad about, they even kicked out Don Mattrick whose ideas they were on 2013 already and even killed Kinect (which was also Mattrick's idea) soon after.... So really dude, learn to let go of past and Look into The future
@@Balnazzardi My problem with Xbox is they have broken too many promises to trust them now. Yeah, they are talking about all the stuff they have planned, but until they start consistently delivering, especially on the software front, they're going to struggle. The 2013 disaster was mostly shaken off within a couple years, what has dogged them has been failure to deliver on promises made predominantly in 2014. That was their big make up conference that gained a lot positivity, but most of the games that generated the buzz were either canceled, very disappointing, or just dead on arrival: Project Spark, Fable Legends, Crackdown 3, Scalebound, Phantom Dust, etc. Even Halo hasn't lived up to series standards lately and Master Chief collection was broken when it launched. There were exceptions: Gears has done fine as well as Forza. But on the whole, MS just hasn't been able to pull themselves together on the exclusives/first party front. This is not helped by Sony cranking out high quality software as the gen has gone on and now Nintendo with the Switch throwing everything they've got at it. This just casts MS's work in a rather poor light. Xbox might turn it around, but they are going into next gen with a lot to prove. They've lost a lot of consumer confidence that they will need to rebuild.
Lol it's funny as hell how this asshole made PlayStation division profitable for Sony. I wonder how juicy that Sony's check was for Don mattrick 2 play double agent.
And 8 years later Microsoft still hasn’t had a successful console or successful exclusive titles….it’s pretty clear the Xbox brand was bound to fail, Microsoft contributed to that.
The Brand still hasn't recovered from his decision. And this ladys and gentlemen is why CEOs get paid so much. Because they create or destroy insane amounts of money with their decisions.
What console is bricked without internet? PS4/PS5 isn’t. At least not the OG ones. The slims do require internet to set up the disc drive which is dumb
@@JacqueBibblequip I had my ps5 day one in 2020. Didn’t have home internet at the time. Didn’t even see the internet for a week. Worked on disc games just fine.
PS5 only needs online check for first time Disc Drive setup (not the console itself, but still dumb). Xbox needs online check for first time Console setup and Game launch. Both can be done offline with PS5.
Most places back then had inconsistent and shit internet, and many still do. Imagine being disconnected when you're about to get the last hit on a soulsborne boss.
That was Microsoft attitude back then. Just being disrespectful to everybody. Laughing at the new iPhone, trying to destroy Linux, laughing at people without internet (that nuclear submarine comment was too much). Wonder how things went for mobile division and Xbox edition. @@farukemirsahin9572 Disconnect your console from the internet. Insert a new game disc and try to install it. You can't, because it will ask to connect to internet to download the configuration. There are some exceptions to this, but not many.

Both consoles had their good and bad, and it was a very close gen.
@@ashleythomas4112 PS3 “outsold” the 360 by the smallest margin ever. It was like 1 million more in the end. I’d argue the controller, best online, and 360 exclusives brought it so much past the PS3. How could you beat Halo 3 back in the day??
@@TheDavidish Yeah, it wasn't much (like 3 mill in the end) but that was with 360 being out for an entire year more and being more expensive for basically the entirety of the 7th gen. Both controllers were fine and PS3 definitely had the better overall exclusive library. 360 had the far, far worse failure rate as well. Of course 360 had the better online experience and normally the superior multiplats but no way was one console far in front of the other, clearly seen by how close the overall sales were.

3. Rushing the Halo spin-off into Halo 5 further hurting the brand
4. Forcing Gears of War 4 into existence (at least it was decent, but unnecessary)
5. Forcing many console players into Playstation
6. Making me jump to PC 3/4ths into the generation.
But you know. I am kind of glad that happened. Because now:
Xbox games are on PC.
Gamepass
Sony is now making similar tone-deaf mistakes.
Sony also putting their games on PC.
Halo MCC being rebuilt.
Halo Infinite learning from all the Halo 5 mistakes.
Sometimes a company has to get humbled.
Yeah dude completely agreed, thank god Phil Spencer came in and saved Xbox.
Ppl often forget that Phil Spencer was on that team. So I don't think they changed just because he was on the team but rather they changed because they were forced to after this disastrous launch.
Don't forget the Adaptive Controller.
@@CoolsBreeze

It’s crazy how one bad conference destroyed the image of a company overnight and have never recovered from this
he was right too just too early. PS5 and Series X, Xbone and PS4 are all basically online only
Most people didn’t even hear about this till years later. Not defending it tho, offline mode should be a requirement no matter what
That was painful. He was so confident people would meekly dump the old product and flock to their new product it clearly hadn't occurred to him the instant response might be: "Stick to 360".
Stick to PS4*
Stick with 360*
Sony should have given him an Employee of the Year award for this statement.
Behold, the man who singlehandedly killed all of Xbox's reputation in an instant, with effects still affecting Xbox to this day
The Moment Xbox died.
BallOfBlood what was the reason?
Yet they are still here and are doing the right steps toward future and next console generation....
But for sure, this man hurt Xbox brand big time.....
@@Balnazzardi "the right steps" what are you talking about. What Xbox tried to do with those anti-consumer policies was pure evil. Xbox tried to skew the entire landscape of gaming against the consumer and they're dead to me forever.
@@HULKHOGAN1 well lets see:
- They tripled the amount of their 1st party studios
-With Xbox One X and with Scarlett they took the attitude to make best console possible
-With Xcloud streaming service they are giving even more choices to play their games where you want and on what device you want (excluding other consoles)
-Gamepass offers huge value for those who would like to use it and combined with Xcloud they could really have the "Netflix of Games" in their hands.
Haha, good question.

Now you're giving him WAY too much credit.

Xbox got betrayed by itself
Don really thought he had one. As soon as Geoff said what he said, it immediately registered in Don’s brain that he severely screwed the pooch.
I feel like something reminds me to come back to this every six months to a year.
And now both consoles are bricked without internet checkmate gamers

So glad this man is gone.
That was Microsoft attitude back then. Just being disrespectful to everybody. Laughing at the new iPhone, trying to destroy Linux, laughing at people without internet (that nuclear submarine comment was too much).

@Zalkovaalso the 360 was just…better. I’ve never heard anyone regard the PS3 in the way the 360 is. Also, Sonys pricing on the PS3 didn’t help.
@@TheDavidish Then you really haven't been paying much attention. PS3 outsold 360 despite being more expensive the entire gen and releasing a year later. 360 was better in some areas like online and most multiplats but PS3 definitely had the better exclusives and way, way less failure rate than 360.
Don Mattrick for Xbox and Jim Ryan for PlayStation are arguably the most anti-consumer CEOs the gaming industry has ever seen.
Both Mattrick and Ryan had one thing in common: pushing to create a gaming future where gaming is an internet service on the cloud laced with DRM, microtransactions, etc. because they loved quick cash grabs more than their userbase
