I have no idea what went through the heads of Microsoft when they decided to enact those restrictions. Fucking idiots. I bought an Xbox One after, but wouldn't have if the restrictions had been in place. Tho the whole xbox probably would have went down the shitter. I mean seriously if you lose your internet for a few days, you can't play your console you paid hundreds of dollars for, I mean at least if cell service goes down, you can still connect your phone to wifi and use the device to a limited extent.

@Tiago Pina I've been with Sony since PS1 so I won't be switching anytime soon. In all honesty, I do like Halo and Gears, so i don't hate Xbox at all. I just don't have enough time to devote to gaming like I use to so I can only justify owning one console between the two. I have a Switch but it's mostly for my kids.

The fact that people make a big deal about this shows how gaming has failed these past few years. Seriously, it shouldn't be announced that a console supports used games, that is something that should be expected.
At first, sorry for my bad english, second, Did you see the E3 show? This was right after Microsoft anounced that Xbox One needed to be always online and did not support used games etc. Sony was taking a piss out of Microsoft, thats why they said it. :)
It was a strategic move by sony because of all the negativity MS got from the DRM policy, backfired and SONY took that opportunity and capitalized on it. Pretty simple plan and it work perfectly. MS is trying to do the Xbone as what they have done with PC games restriction of one computer and it backfired from most people i know.

I knew they were cheering Sony because Microshaft said they weren't going to allow used games but the fact is that people were making a big deal about this even before all these announcements.
its clarification. i remember during the lead up to e3, a lot of gamers were nervous about the policies cause sony never out right told anyone. then they did... and this happened. then ms did so many reversals. even ones that were apparently impossible.
I think Don Mattrick wasn't briefed enough on how to sell the XBOX One. It seems that he adlibed that phrase "We have a product for people who doesn't have internet connectivity it's called XBOX 360".
This is one of the most Epic E3 moments ever. Classic.

It really goes to show just how misguided Microsoft were with their intentions, when the competitors CEO is telling an audience, not what the PS4 can do, but, instead what it WON'T do and that's what caused a lot of gamers to churn from Xbox to Playstation

Even myself as an Xbox fan can agree that Sony took e3 2013 home with them. The fact that this even needed to be said is just sad because games should last until the disc goes bad. It’s such a shame, DRM is a reason to play retro games, those will always be with us without a damn license. Microsoft slightly learned from this mistake, and while I have an Xbox Series X, drm can be a big issue if not connected to the internet.
I can assure you that this wasn’t even intended, they didn’t think on having this kind of advertisement until Microsoft fucked up, these are literally normal features a console should have. LMAO

You do realize that some games do not equal THE ENTIRE FUCKING CONSOLE, right? Emphasis there, because these games are not the majority portion of the library; there are other games that you can pick if the policy doesn't appeal to you, at the same price of $50-60 or lower. With the Xbox One, the thing would have basically turned into _a $499 brick,_ with practically EVERY single game you have, whether or not they even HAVE online modes, becoming unplayable. They're just going to collect dust! And adding the base price of the console _with_ the prices of the games, it balloons up. As someone who likes to buy and collect a lot of games, I find that even more of a waste of money, and thus much less acceptable. I'm not saying that I like this "always online requirement" thing; I just don't think a few games having such a policy are comparable in magnitude compared to an entire console having that shit.

People need to understand Sony didn't do this because they believe in those principles, or they really care about their gamers. It was a business decision to gain an advantage over Microsoft. License based single account ownership (for better or worse) is the future and both Microsoft AND Sony know and want this. Steam has shown it can work.
It isn't just stopping people sharing or selling their games that is attractive either. In my opinion what Valve has with Steam which is much more valuable to these companies is peoples buying habits. Being able to know so much info about each person and when, what and for how much they buy games for & how long/when they are played.
I would be surprised if this transition from Sony and Microsoft doesn't happen before this generation is over, certainly by the beginning of the next generation.
Steam is the worst thing to happen to games look at the greenlight garbage. Also look what happened to the digital versions of Capcom's Marvel games or what 2k did with the digital version of Bioshock 2. Steam's and MS's version of digital downloads is a nightmare and not the future, the gaming public has seen to that.
Though its obvious Steam's way of doing things is the future of gaming on PC console gamers will always expect a physical medium . They are not the same as PC gamers as they expect a little bit more freedom in their gaming experience. Buy a game put it in the console and start gaming without having to deal with DRM nonsense but they also want the option of digital downloads if they so choose.
Thats the true future of gaming ...on consoles at least.

That will show me the errors of my ways! ^^ SNES was and still is awesome, but I'm not living 25 years ago, I'm living now, and except a very few console exclusives (excluding Xbox as they mostly always come to PC), all games can be played on PC. Heck, I just got Ori and the Blind forest on steam last night and I'm loving it. Why get an xbox? I might consider getting a PS4 for Uncharted 4 and few other games in the future, and I do own a Wii-U to play with my actual kids at more family oriented games, but for now, PC is still king of the gaming world.

John Calvin there are only 22 backwards compatible game on the 360, and the publisher must give his approval for the game to be backwards compatible, and a lot of them will not want or just won't care.

There will be more games at the same power as well as the fact that it’s a literal computer. The PS5 Pro is a machine that does nothing but play games (over 95% of which are on PS4)/a few apps. You don’t even get a fucking stand or a disc drive for that expensive ass price.

It's incredible how the fact that Microsoft's press conference was the day before, and the INSANE backlash was possibly the reason for these 2 minutes. Sony adapted so quickly and they completely dominated the market. The tutorial videos from Sony basically mocking Xbox One were also pure gold. We'll never see such humiliation between competing consoles ever again.

I disagree.
The fact that Microsoft even tried to pull that shit in the first place is a huge breach of trust. Add to that the lackluster and occasionally insulting presentation of the Xbox, and the fact that PS4 is actually cheaper and more powerful, and Xbox has lost this generation.

Not really breach of trust from MS, they were arrogant and foolish to think that implementing DRMs and an always online policy would slide with consumers in the 8th gen.
The worst part is Xbox lack of quality exclusives. Xbox ones best exclusives were second party. Ryse and quantum break. Sony on the other hand won goty in 2012, 2013, 2016, 2017, and 2018. Xbox has literally never even been nominated for goty lol

6 years later PS4 has made 100 million units sold while Xbox has decided not to release their numbers. All because of this event.
They have been projected by Forbes to be around 50 million consoles sold.
To put that in perspective, PS4 is sitting at over 100 million consoles sold, and Nintendo Switch has sold around 52 million. (And the Switch came out much later. Over 3 years later)
And 7 years later, ps4 sold almost 120 millions, on the other hand xbox sold, what? 45
I think the last gen decided this gen as well. All those who invested in PS4 will hardly switch to XboxSX. So Sony will win this gen as well no doubt. I just hope MS does better though. They should. Competition breeds inovation.

FUTURIST1C I don't (only PS4) but agreed. The Xbox One has got some pretty nice exclusives, a far better line-up for the rest of the year and reliable online. I'm not getting it though, saving up for PC. PS4 and XOne are too similar for me to own both and not enough exclusives or friends using it either way.

This presentation was edited inside a day to let Sony point out how PS4 was absolutely NOT gonna be like that. Watch it again; every time the crowd cheers it's Sony dunking on something MS did earlier.

Yeah same here. That E3 will be stuck on people head throughout this generation. MS can change their current policies anytime under their the Consumer agreement when people first turn on their Xbox One. It can happen again.
Well there are some people that are microsoft loyal like a friend of mine. But this whole thing that microsoft did, they got rid of it with an update or a patch. Doesnt that mean they can bring it back using a patch also? But why would they anyway lol.
At the same time, you gotta think, MS was trying to move forward instead of sitting in the same place forever. Sure "if it's not broken don't fix it," but if you are not going to attempt to break some boundaries your not going anywhere. We moved away from cartridges to CDs, and people were worried about breaking and scratching (which wasn't all that farfetched) but we moved. I think they could've done better then having it be "authentication based" but they were trying to have a different solution than constantly producing CDs, which could've lowered the price of games overall, or give them a better quality for the same price. You can't always blame them for being ambitious, you just gotta look behind the veil of "what does this mean to me" and look at the long road ahead.

This is a setback Microsoft will never recover from. Yes they will sell consoles (I own a Series S because it's cheap) but they will NEVER be a market leader in this lifetime. Xbox One and Don Mattrick irrevocably destroyed the Xbox brand.
