    Oh yay. 😊 I’d been hoping you’d cover this old weirdo sooner or later! 😃 Two things you hint at that make me want to explore further: at 13:09 when you activate Spectral Gate over the bass line, it almost sounds like a sidechained compressor. Which I think makes sense: you are automating a filter sweep that cuts most of the energy, so it’s not surprising that when that sweep is shaped like a sidechained kick envelope, it has a recognizable effect on the dynamics. Second: it doesn’t have to sound “digital” only: when you bring out the noisier (high end white noise) sounds in the bass line, it actually sounds to me like an effect David Tudor used a lot in his experimental work with feedback driven analog filters in the 1960s and 70s. Food for thought and experimentation, my favourite kind. Thanks so much for finally getting around to this one! 🎉

    LMAO that side eye at 0:56. Perfectly encapsulated what it's like looking at old logic plugin UI

      Just a gentle nudge to Apple that there is further redesign to do... ; ) Thanks!

    Thanks a lot for this video Jono. Spectral Gate definitely is a hidden gem in Logic that has been around since the days of Logic Platinum (when it was still made by Emagic). Apple has not touched it since apparently. I remember creating some wild tracks with side-chained SG AND heavy automation, particularly of the gate frequency, plus a delay in the signal chain right after the SG. One can create CRAZY "swooooosh"-like effects with little effort.

    The turkey leftovers haven't even gone off yet and Jono has released another video. I remember trying this plugin out way back in Logic 8 or thereabouts. That was when every plugin looked just as pretty as this one. I auditioned it by playing something on loop and going through the presets. When I went through them all I thought 'this plugin has nothing for me' and never looked at it again. Now I might have to apportion (see what I did there) some time and check it out again.

      Always nice to discover a tool with a layer of dust and a squeaky hinge just ready to be polished up and reappraised. Thanks Warren, as always. All best wishes for 2024.

    Nice one. Had no idea this thing existed. It’s weird that apple doesn’t bother to modernize these plugins. Thank you.

      I’m hoping that the despairing looks and the mild sarcasm on my part might provide a useful nudge to Apple’s GUI update department! Thanks as always, Andrew. All best wishes for 2024.

    🤣 The look of that plugin hurts me right in the aesthetics. Nice quirky results to be had with it - thanks for the ideas. Simply outré.
    Also, did I ever tell you I invented "Inventing"?

    • @jonobuchananmusic
      @jonobuchananmusic  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      D’you know what? I was rather beginning to suspect that you might have. Can I just say thanks, from all of us, because ‘inventing’ remains really popular. What a thing you did that day… 😉

    If you dig around in the drawer you’ll likely find some odd, forgotten tool and ask yourself, “What’s this for?” I haven’t tried it yet but I’m thinking it could be interesting with pads. Thanks, Jono.
