    Josh - you have an extraordinary way of explaining complex techniques clearly, simply, and efficiently. I've spent hundreds of hours studying Logic and over the years, you've been my "go to" guy. This Sidechain Expansion Trick is another jewel from your impressive catalog. Thank you, sir!

    Hey Josh, Yeah I agree with Mike, I've watched a LOT of production tutorial videos and just the way you organize the information for the viewer makes it easy to comprehend. Your videos have definitely inspired a number of tracks I've produced. Thanks for all you do and providing this essential resource for those of us in the trenches!

    You deserve more support sir. I love the conciseness of your videos. And it's well balanced; the mix between what we might already be familiar with and the new stuff is just so well put it makes understanding so easy. This means more planning and preparation on your part so thank you for your efforts. I'm learning a lot thanks to you.

    Big D&B trick - nicknamed ‘sizzling hats’ where the hi hats are the sidechain trigger to the distortion or expander on the bass

    Wow thankyou so much. I asked this question on an Instagram post because I wanted to know whether you could accentuate certain sounds when the sidechain hits and everyone answered like I was stupid or something. Now I know it's called dynamic expansion - just speaks for the fact that legit information is hard to find. Kudos!!

    Now as I was watching this video it reminds me of a similar one that by chance I saw this morning that was called „Compression Side Chain Filter“ from your very, very good course „Advanced Mixing“, which I purchased some weeks ago. I‘m very interested in this topic and as it’s not easy for me to understand, I’m again and again looking for videos about side chaining.

    I really appreciate that you deliberately avoid talking over the "with/without" comparison, it is so distracting when other people doing this kind of comparisons stop the music, take a few seconds to say "and now let's hear it with the effect applied", and restart the music.

    Hi, I'm working in Logic and trying to set up a side chain compressor on an aux bus. I know how to do this and to assign the compressor to side-chain to the track of the kick drum. My problem is the instrument tracks that I would like to have ducked under the kick are already assigned to a SUM (Track Stack), which is Bus 11. If I switch the Bus of these tracks to the aux bus with the side chin compressor (Bus 16), then they will no longer be controlled by the Sum track. Is there a way to set up both Bus 11 and Bus 16 (For side-chain)? If so, can someone please explain how to set this up? Thanks!!

    mmmm, expander, I'll have to check this out.....I could use an expander on the kick, and sidechain the bass, ?

  • @lieutenantpepper2734
    @lieutenantpepper2734 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    would expanding the bass instead of compressing it would be a viable option if we want a bass that stands out?

    • @diego_wagner
      @diego_wagner 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You definitely could, but usually you compress the bass on the kick so that the lower frequencies don't clash with one another. Both the kick and bass occupy a lot of volume in the low-end, so expanding the bass could actually just make it muddier. Maybe there's another benefit to expanding the bass I'm not realizing though!

  • @lawinter1949
    @lawinter1949 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I don't know if I agree that expansion is like upward compression. Upward compression is still decreasing the distance between the loudest and quietest parts of the audio. Expansion is the opposite of compression. Instead of bringing the loudest and quietest parts closer together you are stretching them farther apart. I don't think Logic has a stock plugin that does upward compression.
