Logic Pro: Studio Tour
It’s Episode 150! Firstly, a huge thank you to all of you who have followed, subscribed, asked questions, got involved, bought courses on Teachable and been part of this growing community. I’m grateful for your wisdom, encouragement and enthusiasm. As this is a bit of a milestone, I’ve dispensed with the usual format to show you around my studio instead. I’ll talk a little bit about my rig, how I use it and why there are two separate ‘ends’ to my room.

Logic Pro: Creating Mix Space: Top End
มุมมอง 1.3K19 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
We’re returning to the theme of creating mix space this week, moving on from the previous episodes in this mini-series (Low End, Pads and Low Mid Range), th-cam.com/play/PL6JM7SQmyRYyAjkEtGvWiMvGj25NQPiPt.html to analyse what happens when we overload our mixes with too much Treble. Logic Pro: Ideas Machine Template
มุมมอง 3.6K14 วันที่ผ่านมา
We tend to think about Templates as places where we can get sounds organised into categories where we can return, time after time, to be greeted with sounds we know and trust. Templates are great for kick-starting the creative process and they save you masses of time setting up each new sound from scratch every time you want to start making music. But what about the idea of a Template as a deli...
Logic Pro: Sequenced Parallel Distortion
มุมมอง 1.5K21 วันที่ผ่านมา
This week, I’m going to take you inside the world of ‘tension underscore’; a popular musical genre for Directors and Editors making TV shows, when something musically dark and propulsive can be useful, helping to drive a scene. There are lots of ways in which you can go beyond the obvious when it comes to making sounds like this. I’m going to ‘sequence’ a Parallel Distortion channel, by which I...
Logic Pro: Propulsive Pianos

Rhythmic, undulating piano patterns are hugely popular resources for TV, film and game composers, as well as being a favourite of those writing Ambient Music or composers looking for gentle, warm textures. Plug-ins like Native Instruments’ Noire and Spitfire Audio’s Stratus are examples of the kind of gentle, rolling piano libraries which can blend beautifully with strings, electronics and even...

OK, I admit it. I had my head turned by another plug-in. A third-party one. And yes, my glance lingered too long. But I’m hoping you’ll forgive me because the lessons I learnt whilst in its company I’ve brought back to Logic this week. What happens when one Filter plug-in feeds another? And what happens when that second Filter feeds a third? I’m going to show you how the use of LFOs and Envelop...

Logic Pro: Mix Space Part 2 Low Mid Range
มุมมอง 1.1Kหลายเดือนก่อน
This week, I’m returning to the theme of creating mix space within a track by shining a light on the ‘engine room’ of the mix; the low mid range. Occupying frequencies between around 130 and 300Hz, it’s actually quite hard to find a sound which doesn’t offer activity in this frequency area. The bottom end of snares, the thump of Kick Drums, low pads, pianos, guitars, vocals even… this is a freq...

    To make it act like filter freak ive send my signal to 2 different aux Each aux than has an auto filter and lets say each it's a band pass type Than i make sure the aux has a track on the arrangement view From there I add a pattern region on the aux track and in the step sequence i hit "learn note" and than I move the cutt off filter and can than use the step sequencer to automate the cut of knob or any parameter and make some cool rhythms Im thinking of having these 2 busses in my template so i can quickly send any source ro them and have it already setup and mapped

    • @ifiwantyoutofeel
      @ifiwantyoutofeel 7 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      To simplify it further I think you can group the 2 aux as 1 bus and put the pattern region on that bus so you have 1 step sequencer controlling both plugins It's not as intuitive but it works, it's really has me thinking the different ways I can manipulate audio

    Best videos on the net. Have you ever used any other DAW ? Do you ever notice in logic when you edit Audio parts on the fly it takes a second or so for the change to take place. I usually just stop and start the track again then the change takes place straight away. It does my head in. Any other DAW the audio changes straight away on the fly. It also happens when I change parameters on synths for example but not that often. Thanks

    • @jonobuchananmusic
      @jonobuchananmusic 3 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      That's incredibly kind, thank you David. Yes, my understanding is that the way the original audio drivers for Logic were written - back in the day - the time it takes for an audio edit to correct or play back accurately is kind of 'baked in'. In other words, it would take a complete rewrite of the audio engine to make that not the case. (My apologies to Emagic and Apple if I've got that wrong). It is frustrating but, you're right, either pressing Stop, or looping a section and just kind of accepting that it won't be until the second time around that any audio edits will play back accurately is kind of just how it is. I must say I don't have that issue with Synths or Automation - all changes there are picked up on the fly. But the slight Audio edit/adjustment lag is real, no matter how capable the spec of your machine.

    Hey JB, thank you for the rundown. Could you explain in more detail why you use the line mixer and not the individual inputs on the Apollo? Too few inputs or for better sound quality/ analog summing?

    • @jonobuchananmusic
      @jonobuchananmusic 12 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Hi Greg. Exactly that - I have two channels of the Apollo taken up with preamp signals from the Britstrip and the UA LA-610, which leaves only 6 from the synths, so I bought the Line Mixer as a simple way to have them all connected into a stereo pair of inputs. Thanks for your question.

    During covid I decided to go in-the-box and sold a lot of my outboard gear and synths. The Arturia V Collection really made this possible - 39 vintage keyboards that I could never afford to own. Why do still use those Moog synths instead of VSTs?

    • @jonobuchananmusic
      @jonobuchananmusic 12 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Hi Jeffy. A number of reasons, really. I like to change up my workflow and I definitely find that my headspace changes when I get up and go to one of the synths and have a play. I think hardware synths feel more like musical instruments (to me) than a computer ever will and so I just have a different relationship with them from a musical perspective. As I said in the video, a HUGE amount of my work does indeed happen in Logic with soft synths. But it's nice to have access to a different workflow and speed of work (ie slower!), from time to time.

    Was actually googling for hardware setups just today😲🤯 Did not really grow up playing piano. Played a bit of synth, but the sort of noises I made on it was generally frowned upon in the household. Also, discovered sex and recreational at an impressionable age. But! Got myself a piano teacher in my late 20s, and discovered Logic in my early 30s, and today I applied for a college course in sound and music production. Would like to score something before I die… Gonna be starting that course next year. I have a garage. I don’t have a car… Do have a fairly unused Touché… So really, what perfect timing on this video. Since I discovered the expander, my first use was to lower the noise floor and drum bleed from live vocals. AI splitting has since rendered that technique obsolete. I have now started using the expander as a clipper. By turning off auto gain and setting output clip to off you dial in how many dbs in the red you want by playing with the Threshold ratio and Gain. Once you get the desired dbs over 0, switch the output clip to HARD and it will shave off everything above zero. This works great for giving drums more head room so they can be turned up even louder. Use on individual shells or all shells at once. Keep in mind the shorter the transient is the better. Longer sounds like cymbals or Vocals will sound distorted and should only be used if thats the sound you are looking for.

    Greta vid jono! Is there value in keeping the samples aligned to the generic kit notes, I.e kick on C1 and snare on D1 or not so much?

    • @jonobuchananmusic
      @jonobuchananmusic 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi Neil. There's no 'need' to, per se, but it does make sense to follow that format if you think there's any chance you'll want to experiment with comparing the Kit you make to any other pre-existing Kit, or readily duplicate Snares/Claps/Kicks across Kits. It just saves you the hassle of having to Transpose the relevant notes between Kits. But if you're working with your Kit alone, feel free to use any note assignments you like.

    Thank you Jono. Spot on........ horses for courses. But now, sadly, we are relentlessly assaulted by AI driven music every time we switch on the tv or radio....... As a resource, I think what Apple are offering us in the Logic platform is nothing short of miraculous, considering it wasn't really that long ago, when we used to save up our hard earned money to record in a studio for a weekend. I do think there appears to be a school of thought, that considers these 'new' Logic features, as somehow invading their sacred space, and takes something away from their cosy creative environment. In truth, Logic is just a tool (and a GREAT tool), which offers way more than the average person will ever need in a lifetime of creativity. Some of those features I'll never use, and others I'll use every day....... Choice is always the bottom line, and that's the beauty of this wonderful application.

    • @jonobuchananmusic
      @jonobuchananmusic 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi Ross. Absolutely. I’ve always encouraged people to think of Logic (and technology in general) as a musical instrument. It requires practice but the rewards for mastering the features and aspects of its musical capabilities are that you’ll feel in control of the music you want to make. And because it’s such an open-ended, capable and sophisticated instrument, the vast array of possibilities for what that music can be is breathtaking. The only features which give me pause for thought are those which feel as though they could short-circuit that sophistication to rush us all to a predictable result too quickly. But as many have pointed out, even those features offer possibilities for wilful musical corruption or reinterpretation. So long as we keep our ears open, all will be well!

    This is a great series thanks. A question I have is could you share how you manage the Low and Low-Mid ranges to ensure these frequencies are adequately heard if the music is played on a smartphone. My understanding is that Smartphones 'don’t hear' frequencies below 150-200 Hz. Not sure if you have ever covered this subject before in any of your videos. Any wisdom you might have in this area I'd love to hear ... many thanks. For context, I produce and release music from my home studio in Thailand as Anacrusis in Thailand and a number of tracks ;eave a bit to be desired if listened to via a smartphone...

    • @jonobuchananmusic
      @jonobuchananmusic 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      This is a great question and it goes to heart of why the way we hear and the 'frequency capabilities' of any speaker (whether that of a Smartphone, or a pair of studio monitors) goes beyond the stated ranges. I don't mean to suggest that a speaker with a stated lowest frequency range of - let's say 150Hz - can play back frequencies below that. But I do mean that what you do to your mixes below 150Hz can have implications for the way that we hear frequencies above that point. The best example of this is what happens when you add a high-pass filter (or a low cut, which is the same thing) to any mix which is using a Stereo Compressor across the Mix Buss. As bass frequencies are slow and powerful, they often have the greatest impact in the way that a Mix Buss Compressor will behave. In other words, those low frequencies force the behaviour of the Compressor, which we can then hear in terms of the way that high frequencies behave. So, to answer your question, if you want greater clarity in the mid-range, often the best thing to do is to tighten up or play around with the Volume of low-frequency content, so that the speakers you're working with aren't overwhelmed by trying to play back frequencies they aren't capable of coping with. BUT...! Be careful! If you do this too much, in order for a Smartphone mix to sound the best it can be, those mixes will sound bass-light on any full pair of speakers. So what I'd suggest is that you pull any track that you really like the sound of on your Smartphone into Logic and carefully analyse what is happening from a volume/frequency perspective below the frequency range of that Smartphone's speaker. Compare that to the level and amount of low frequency content in your own mixes and that should provide some useful steer.

    Another superb, thought-provoking tutorial, thank you. I have a tendency sometimes to over-complicate the groove with too many loops, and I’m experimenting more now by just including less ‘stuff’ so the ear has an easier time settling onto something less cluttered, but you make some very interesting points here though. Thanks again (as always) 👍

    Personally, I like to try my mixes on my cats, to see how they feel about the top end bits. Always try to have a mix that doesn't unduly rile up cats...

      When is a cat not riled up about something?

      Pets as top-end testers - I like that idea. Like a version of a Studio dog-whistle. But for cats. I have no idea what the frequency range receptor of the tortoise is but I suspect that they’d be an excellent mix reference too.

      @jonobuchananmusic Tortoise cat? Probably ~40hz to 60-80khz. Tortoises and turtles, a perfunctory google search tells me, can’t hear much over 1khz…

      @ Difficult to say, but noticed when Jono was cranking the autofilter cutoff back up, one of my cats peeked her head up with a wild look in her eyes at around 70% cutoff. I suspect they are more sensitive to qualities in what we perceive as high frequency sounds, as it is barely mid-frequency sounds to them.
