    We took my spare completely off and mounted it upright in the forward part of the bed of my ZR2, because I do mild-to-moderate off-roading. I use two 4-gallon Rotopax attached to the front of my off-road custom trailer (made at RockYour4X4). In addition, my ZR2 is diesel-powered which gives me better mileage.

    Good stuff. Thanks for the video. Been looking into spare fuel tank options for my Bison.

    I have a big Yellow 8 gallon plastic tank mounted on the inside of the Bed rack on the back side of the rotopax cans. For a total of of 10 Gallons with my yellow rotopax can. Love my zr2. Im on FB with a couple groups.

      @@varsityoverland it’s on Amazon but the attachment bolts are 3 inches too short. I had to go aces hardware to make it work with the locks. So typical Amazon junk

    Great info. How's it held up over the past 2 years?

      I ended up only using it for water because the company wouldn't confirm it was designed for gasoline. Worked well though. However, I know Expedition Overland used theirs for gasoline during their trip through Africa and had no problems.

    Thanks for the video, I was curious about this product. I have a couple thoughts, they may or may not be valid.
    I noticed that this isn’t epa rated for fuel, not that it wouldn’t pass, it just isn’t rated. Is that a legal concern if something happens on the road, idk.
    Another thing is that it is probably good to use that metal washer or some other insert ring as this seemingly distributes the force of the hoist lift around the whole circumference of the plastic tank ring instead of just two small sections of the colorado style hoist bit. I’m not sure of the construction of the tanks inner ring, if it is solid or hollow in that area, but the hoist has a lot of torque, perhaps cracking the tank could occur if over tightened.
    On my diesel zr2 I’ve narrowly fit a 33.1”(255/80/17) spare and had to move the heat shield towards passenger side to squeeze the tire in place. I notice on yours either you removed that shield or the gasser doesn’t come with one. Not sure how close the exhaust systems gets to that area if you have a fuel tank there, if heat is an issue.

    • @varsityoverland
      @varsityoverland  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      All legitimate thoughts. I had previously removed the heat shield. Considering putting it back on but think ill reach out to the company to ask about it too. I didn't realize it wasn't epa rated🤷‍♂️ ill look into that.

    Not bad but really pricy for something that is parts sold separately lol but it's not bad. I would say get a rubber fitting to reduce damage to the opening. Great vid

    I have this under my rig. One issue that will come up is the tank will start to slightly deform and sag due to the weight. To counter this, I ratchet strapped it to distribute the weight better.

    • @varsityoverland
      @varsityoverland  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like a shit product. Especially if they make you go on Amazon to find your own washers to get it to fit.

  • @AlmightyyCres
    @AlmightyyCres 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    They need to make an adapter that fits snug into the opening and reduces the size of the hole.

    I really like your Bed rack. I wish they had more options when I bought mine in 2018 for zr2 Colorado. Leitner bed rack with round tubes all-black version is what I installed. Do run Spod or something else for your electrical? Happy New Year Everyone

    There's a simple(not cheap) solution for this but after emailing the company their response indicated they didn't want to be bothered with offering any more than the tank. Here's a thought. Cut a 29" disc out of 1/4" aluminum. Cut the center of that disc and add an insert that matches the inner diameter and depth of the tanks lift recess to keep everything centered(have it tig welded in place) and you're done. Plus you have now added a layer of protection for the tank. Also, I'd strongly advise you reinstall your heat shield. Thanks for being the first to post an installation video on their product. It has great potential but needs someone willing to take it to the next level(as they say). Thanks again, and good luck.

    I am really enjoying your frankness when you're talking about gear and vehicles. Especially when you cover why you chose your vehicle and why it may or may not have been the best choice for you economically now that you've been driving it. The question I have for you with this, is how did it do in the warm weather? Did the gas expand a lot or did you have any problems with leaking or with the tank sagging around the center support? Thank you again!

    • @varsityoverland
      @varsityoverland  ปีที่แล้ว

      I decided not to use it for gasoline. Upon further research I found that most fuel containers are made of a material slightly stronger than this tank. The company also doesn't specifically say "gasoline." So it holds water just fine!🤣

    Thank you for the video... Can you share how it is holding up?
    A few concerns that I had... (1) Use a spacer/washer made out of Delrin. So no metal comes in contact with the tank... You then place the metal washer on the outside of the Delrin washer... I am just concerned with the metal washer cutting into the plastic tank with the day to day vibration. (2) As someone mentioned, install the heat shield back...
    I currently have the yellow Rotopax for my Bison diesel...

      I decided to use it for water because of the gas concerns. Also kinda more trouble than its worth to access 🤷‍♂️

    I see you’ve removed the original tire heat shield, you not worried the plastic tank might melt from the exhaust heat. Sounds risky if you plan to carry fuel in the tank.

    I don't understand why would you want a portable tank mounted under the truck bed.
    Seems like this could potentially get damaged on trail plus all the dirt this fuel cap will see I wouldn't want to use this for fuel. Maybe water. Interesting design of the tank. Can that be mounted on the swing out tire mount?

    • @varsityoverland
      @varsityoverland  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah Im not 100% sold on using it for fuel, maybe water. I agree with your points. Ive actually considered using it with the tire carrier but am having trouble with mounting options.

    • @AngelLovesToLook
      @AngelLovesToLook 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you weld? It seems it wouldn't be to difficult to figure out a spacer between the tire and the mount. But then you have to worrie about the Xtra weight.🤐🤐🤐

      I understand 👍 honestly it'll just be a last resort option. I drove almost 10k miles through 15 states last summer and never needed extra gas so although this is slightly extra work its really more for peace of mind.
