It seems this idea probably got repurposed in The Sarah Jane Adventures for 'The Empty Planet' - with abandoned London, chases, and an alien prince/princess, it's all incredibly similar. And Phil Ford was heavily involved in SJA at the time!
As much as I would have loved to have seen Judi Dench in Doctor Who I much prefer the way things turned out! I love Waters Of Mars which is probably my favourite RTD story. The whole premise of even the tiniest drop of water is being deadly is inspired as is the casting of Lindsay Duncan.

I'm pretty sure Helen Mirren's reason for declining previous offers to appear on the show is based upon her not wanting to be a guest star on Doctor Who, she wants to *BE* the Doctor.

It would have been an interesting story. But I think it was good it was dropped. It definitely sounds like it would exist at one extreme or the other. Even Waters of Mars was supposed to be fully set during Christmas at one point. Originally titled “Red Christmas” but they changed it to an autumn special. Since Phil Ford also wrote the 4th episode of the Adventure Games I wonder if that was his way of reusing the idea of a Christmas base under siege story. Awesome video Josh!

Explaining an unmade episode to Doctor Who fans must be like explaining made Doctor Who episodes to someone normal. Thanks Josh. It feels like Dench playing Gran and a temporary companion would have been an easy swap for many an episode. Sadly, she's probably too elderly now.
i know the old saying that one man’s meat is another man’s poison. For me, all out horror is a turn of, as well as drawn out battle or fight scenes. I prefer the kind of drama that engages the mind with small measures of scare. War Games was pure torture for me as a child. Midnight gave me an overdose of chills plus nightmares, while Waters Of Mars made me feel queasy. 🤢 Not a good feeling for an adult fan of the show. They’ve done the empty hotel with 11, Amy and Rory. Remember the minator who feasted on worship? Looking forward to watching the new Christmas special with all my family. I always love seeing behind the scenes developmental stuff like this. It's always fascinating to see what they were considering and what might've been. While the concept does sound a bit ropey, I do appreciate that RTD had Phil Ford at least attempt an outline. You never know if something does or doesn't work until you actually try it out. That said, the connective tissue between Gran and Adelaide is very clear, and in another world, I'm sure she's played by Dench! And many Happy Australian Holidays to you!
Behind the scenes of Star Wars episode 9 Judi Dench was supposed to be the creator of the Millennium Falcon and I think they approach the actress for the part but the storyline didn't go anywhere so it was cut.

Waters of Mars is a masterpiece. It's very Arthur Clarke in the combination of horror, mystery and sci-fi. It even won awards, so I think that's a winner. Nothing can beat it! However I'm sad for the missed opportunity of The Doctor travelling with an elderly companion. The centaurs bit... It might work now, but back then with the tech of the time and budget... it'd probably end up looking pretty bad and clunky. I love fantasy but not in my serving of Doctor Who, more like a side dish if you will. Side comment: You look FABULOUS with that Christmas outfit, and your hair's perfect
Enterprise's second season episode "Future Tense" includes a time travelling pod/ship which is bigger on the inside than it is on the outside, so the Trek/Who homages would run both ways....
I can think of an ending that would have have raised a few eyebrows! At the end of the episode when after Gran is reunited with her famly she gets a call on her mobile phone, she answers it and says "Merry Christmas Bill............What?...........How Many?.......argh What has James got himself mixed up in THIS TIME?" ;)
Thinking about crossover concepts for a moment, the Doctor discovering Earth's Moon travelling through a distant part of space in the far distant future, landing in the deserted Moonbase Alpha complex from Space 1999 - and playing Sandra Benesh's final pre-evacuation message, would in theory be an interesting one... Honouring that other great institution of UK sci-fi, Gerry Anderson. However, I can see that RTD's interest in a Trek crossover was likely to have been more motivated by export sales potential from piggy-backing on a major US franchise than any notion of making good television.
As much as I’d have love to have seen Judi or Helen in the show, the concept as was didn’t have enough teeth to it. Consider the cliffhanger. It’s pants compared to all of the other Christmas cliffhangers. The Doctor regenerating, Donna appearing in the TARDIS, The Titanic crashing through…A Famous Actress (kids might not even know) knocks on the door?
Same I've gone through a few bits of it here and there but not sat down and read the whole thing, was gonna use it for an essay I was doing on RTD for uni but realised whatever I was after I couldn't get from the book so just never got round to fully reading it.
I think Judi Dench would have been spectacular on Doctor Who, it's a shame she never did it. Maybe we can have a sequel to Survival and have her play a cat person, since she seems relatively up for it these days, if 'Cats' is any indication.
I don't think the story would have stacked up, to be honest. And, in any case, the following era did that blend of fairytale and sci-fi better overall. It would have been nice to have Judi Dench in the show. Imagine her as Tecteun, for instance!
Personally I'd love to see legends like Dame Judy Dench and Helen Mirren appear in Dr Who. Same with Patrick Stewart. I always hoped that Ian Holm would show up on Who one day, but alas! 😢
The Unmade RTD/Tennant era Who media is cringe at the modern DrWho levels . Thankfully BBC wasn't gleefully green lighting all of Russel's teen girl fan fiction back in those days or that entire era could've been much worse. Ask Chris... That's why he bolted 😂
Forget being a companion- Dench or Mirren could have made great Doctors at any moment in their careers. I’m just glad the JK Rowling episode didn’t get made……that wouldn’t have aged well.
I feel that it’s an interesting idea, but as 10s penultimate story it would feel a HUGE let down, but that’s probably because we have the waters of mars instead. Also the beginning for Gran feels far too Home Alone for my liking (even though I LOVE Home Alone)
How very dare you? Hobbits aren't Gnomes. Deep-elves are Gnomes. Haven't you ever read The Book of Lost Tales? Or the first edition of The Hobbit? Just kidding. But yeah, it would have been a shame not to have gotten The Waters of Mars, and as others have said, we did kind of get this story in The Sarah Jane Adventures. However, it might be fun if Big Finish did this as a Lost Story. They could even get Judi Dench (I mean they probably couldn't, but I can dream, can't I?).
We may not have gotten this, but we also didn't get the JK Rowling Christmas special and we did get the Kylie Minogue Christmas special. So thank god for that at least.
It seems this idea probably got repurposed in The Sarah Jane Adventures for 'The Empty Planet' - with abandoned London, chases, and an alien prince/princess, it's all incredibly similar. And Phil Ford was heavily involved in SJA at the time!
That’s a good point!!
TBH, the original version sounds like a retread of Runaway Bride. However, I could see both Mirren or Dench essaying the Adelaide role in WoM.
The Eighth Doctor novels did Doctor Who meets Star Trek brilliantly in The Blue Angel by Paul Magrs and Jeremy Hoard.

100% haha
I can think of an ending that would have have raised a few eyebrows! At the end of the episode when after Gran is reunited with her famly she gets a call on her mobile phone, she answers it and says "Merry Christmas Bill............What?...........How Many?.......argh What has James got himself mixed up in THIS TIME?" ;)
RTD might have been able to pull this episode off, if only he could write 🤣
The Doctor regenerating, Donna appearing in the TARDIS, The Titanic crashing through…A Famous Actress (kids might not even know) knocks on the door?
i really need to read a writers tale, i own it yet still havent read it
It’s goooood
Same I've gone through a few bits of it here and there but not sat down and read the whole thing, was gonna use it for an essay I was doing on RTD for uni but realised whatever I was after I couldn't get from the book so just never got round to fully reading it.
I think Judi Dench would have been spectacular on Doctor Who, it's a shame she never did it. Maybe we can have a sequel to Survival and have her play a cat person, since she seems relatively up for it these days, if 'Cats' is any indication.
😅😅
Home Alone.
these centaur aliens sure are odd
😅😅
Shame these ideas wouldn't be used in today's time. Might get ruined if there's an attempt though with changes involved for "modern audiences."
We may not have gotten this, but we also didn't get the JK Rowling Christmas special and we did get the Kylie Minogue Christmas special. So thank god for that at least.
Sometimes good things do happen!!! A Christmas miracle!!!
