The “I’m only acting in your best interest” really hit home for me- My birth parents constantly put me in after school programs and summer camps, even tho my mom was a stay at home mom- They always told me “it would be good for me” but I never caught a break from them, and I was always really exhausted. When I was around 11/12 I would actually scream and cry every time I had to go to camp or daycare because I really need a quiet space and alone time to re-charge/ be productive, so I never finished homework and just barely passed 6th grade. I’m 15 now and in a better home with better parents who don’t make me go to dumb summer camps :’D I’m also an introvert… *w o n d e r w h y*
it also hit hard for me too, my mother (being the highly religous homophobe she is while i am atheist and bi) alwasy tries to say that i should be greatful for everything she has given me when she is the biggest reason i have my depression. She wants unrealstic epectations of me and always expects me to do good in everything. she forces me to talk more when she is the reason i don't talk much because she alwayas brushed my feelings off. She always thinks i'm having these feeling becaus eof my devices and sets harsher restrictions on them. She even blasted at my counseller for not telling her what i've been saying saying "I'm his mother i have the right to know what he is talking about" trying to be a good mother but ends up pushing her second son away.
During my childhood many adults, both family and teachers, repeatedly told me I shouldn't cry unless someone died or I got hurt severely, that crying in public is bad and that I'm too old to cry. The result? I don't know how to express my emotions or tell someone when I'm not doing very good and I absolutely hate crying for "no" reason to the point I rapidly wipe my eyes over and over again while whispering to myself "Don't cry, crying is bad, don't cry, crying is bad."
About the dog, sometimes little kids just ask for dogs without realising they are not toys and they need to be taken care of, fed, and walked. Sometimes it’s not that parents just want to spend all their money on their own stuff, sometimes they don’t have the time for it, or simply don’t want to have that responsibility (which is understandable), since they know their kid is too young to take good care of the pet.
In that case, I guess parents should tell their children the responsibilities that implies having a pet. I was 8 y/o and I had to feed my dog and clean all the disasters he did.
The "denying your feelings" thing really sent me back because my parents asked me why I was failing school, so I started crying on impulse in accident, and was basically forced to say why. As soon as I said it was because online made me feel worse since I have a terrible memory, get distracted easily by anything, and can't sit still for long; saying I was stressed, I was greeted solely with a "you're not stressed, you're just finding excuses." Like they'd always say, and just ignored that I was genuinly stressed beyond anything because I was trying my best to keep focused, remember, and stay still to listen to class to make them happier, but was just responded to with "you're being lazy, just try harder." which is hard for me in general. End of story, after that I felt like I couldn't do anything and that I should just give up trying to focus because it wasn't good enough when I was trying my hardest so I've failed, especially since it happened first quarter and I've had it circling in my mind on repeat since that day.
My parents said the same for me too, especially now in online classes. Tried balancing my online activities with family chores and then youth activities (and said youth group are so immature af) but had to lie now that I'm doing fine even though I'm already slowly failing cause I'm no longer alright.
I never even thought of that as an effect of online classes - that sucks! And of course you're stressed. The last year and a half have been stressful because of covid, and things were probably already full of stress before that to begin with. I wish I could help tutor either/both of you, @McLeviathan and @Linea Noves. Probably all I could do is find kids around here to help with their schoolwork (and honestly, I always feel a bit like I'm creepy if I offer to help strangers or strangers' kids).
my sibling (they're agender) has ADHD, and some signs of that are being easily distracted and not being able to sit still. Maybe you have ADHD? A lot of people with ADHD struggle with school/work and are often told they are 'being lazy' or 'could do better if they tried harder' but they are trying very hard.
My mom does that too but recently I had come back from a week camp trip and had been suuuuper tired bc each night I got like 5 hours of sleep since our schedule was from 6:45 am to 11 pm all week. The sunday after I got back, she had been saying that I was "just saying excuses" when I told her how tired and sore I was (there was a mountain that I had to climb daily and it was hugeee). Eventually her and my sister left to church without me and I ended up being overwhelmed with emotions and cried for like an hour. 10/10 parenting :)
When I was younger, whenever I got mad at my parents I would slap myself. Hard. And all they said was "You're being so dramatic, stop that!" Sometimes in my rage I'd say I wanted to kill myself, and all they would say was "Stop being so dramatic!" and then ignore me.

My dad always had told me since I was a toddler to not cry when he is scolding me, or that I don't have the right to feel angry to anyone including me. As time passed, I started to hide my negative emotions from him and I only express them freely with my mom and my older brother. What I hate the most about crying is that many times, when I'm alone, I do it in silence, not even a sound, although it's rare the ocassion when I make a lot of noise and that vent stuff. And so uh, my dad has done worst things to my older siblings -that are in their early 30's- and never apologized to us, and he will probably never do it.

If they won't come to you, they might stop talking with you, and once they are old enough to move, they might never talk to you again. And sometimes will lead to suicide if you don't protect them.
You atleast have an option to move out. Moving out from parents unmarried is almost a no-no in Indian society (unless yeah you're moving out for job purposes/studies).
My parents constantly pulled the "for your own good" trick with me in the same way as the example. They always rewarded themselves first and I was an afterthought. It took a long time to put words to the message that my thoughts/feelings/needs/interests didn't matter to them and I still experience reminders of it as an adult. It also took a long time to realize that while my thoughts/feelings/needs/interests may not matter to them, they matter to me and the people who I choose to surround myself with as an adult. As a child, an only child at that, I was largely under their constant control and had to put up with a lot more bad treatment than I will put up with now that I am legally allowed to leave whenever I want.

Once my mother and i were in a heated argument about me and my school grades, out of anger i yelled: "Do you even care about my mental health and well being?" my mother then said no and yelled at me to work my a late project. A couple minutes later she brushed it off and was mad at me for being "Grumpy" and she never said that she was sorry. Nor the next day, or the day after that, so on and so forth. That was about a year ago. Im now convinced that whenever she says that i can talk to her, i feel like she doesn't care about how i feel and my thoughts. Thats most of the reason i'm pretty self reserved and dont speak my mind. I have a great mother :D

My parents think I'm making up my anxiety and depression, and that I'm not affected with them. They always say it's because of my PC and shit, blame whatever I like doing or spending time with. Yeah, between my little sister and me, it's very clear that they favored her more than me. They always supported her extracurricular activities even though it costs a bit (photography and music instrument), while i got scolded when i participating in debate club and got scolded when i asked them to pay for fee to enter competition. I'm not gonna lie that this kind of treatment hurts me the most and i still having hard time moving on from this even though i already have a job.

My birth parents constantly put me in after school programs and summer camps, even tho my mom was a stay at home mom-
They always told me “it would be good for me” but I never caught a break from them, and I was always really exhausted. When I was around 11/12 I would actually scream and cry every time I had to go to camp or daycare because I really need a quiet space and alone time to re-charge/ be productive, so I never finished homework and just barely passed 6th grade. I’m 15 now and in a better home with better parents who don’t make me go to dumb summer camps :’D

About the dog, sometimes little kids just ask for dogs without realising they are not toys and they need to be taken care of, fed, and walked.
Sometimes it’s not that parents just want to spend all their money on their own stuff, sometimes they don’t have the time for it, or simply don’t want to have that responsibility (which is understandable), since they know their kid is too young to take good care of the pet.
In that case, I guess parents should tell their children the responsibilities that implies having a pet. I was 8 y/o and I had to feed my dog and clean all the disasters he did.

The "denying your feelings" thing really sent me back because my parents asked me why I was failing school, so I started crying on impulse in accident, and was basically forced to say why. As soon as I said it was because online made me feel worse since I have a terrible memory, get distracted easily by anything, and can't sit still for long; saying I was stressed, I was greeted solely with a "you're not stressed, you're just finding excuses." Like they'd always say, and just ignored that I was genuinly stressed beyond anything because I was trying my best to keep focused, remember, and stay still to listen to class to make them happier, but was just responded to with "you're being lazy, just try harder." which is hard for me in general.
End of story, after that I felt like I couldn't do anything and that I should just give up trying to focus because it wasn't good enough when I was trying my hardest so I've failed, especially since it happened first quarter and I've had it circling in my mind on repeat since that day.
My parents said the same for me too, especially now in online classes.
Tried balancing my online activities with family chores and then youth activities (and said youth group are so immature af) but had to lie now that I'm doing fine even though I'm already slowly failing cause I'm no longer alright.
I never even thought of that as an effect of online classes - that sucks!
And of course you're stressed. The last year and a half have been stressful because of covid, and things were probably already full of stress before that to begin with.

Probably all I could do is find kids around here to help with their schoolwork (and honestly, I always feel a bit like I'm creepy if I offer to help strangers or strangers' kids).
my sibling (they're agender) has ADHD, and some signs of that are being easily distracted and not being able to sit still. Maybe you have ADHD? A lot of people with ADHD struggle with school/work and are often told they are 'being lazy' or 'could do better if they tried harder' but they are trying very hard.
My mom does that too but recently I had come back from a week camp trip and had been suuuuper tired bc each night I got like 5 hours of sleep since our schedule was from 6:45 am to 11 pm all week. The sunday after I got back, she had been saying that I was "just saying excuses" when I told her how tired and sore I was (there was a mountain that I had to climb daily and it was hugeee). Eventually her and my sister left to church without me and I ended up being overwhelmed with emotions and cried for like an hour.

My parents constantly pulled the "for your own good" trick with me in the same way as the example. They always rewarded themselves first and I was an afterthought. It took a long time to put words to the message that my thoughts/feelings/needs/interests didn't matter to them and I still experience reminders of it as an adult. It also took a long time to realize that while my thoughts/feelings/needs/interests may not matter to them, they matter to me and the people who I choose to surround myself with as an adult. As a child, an only child at that, I was largely under their constant control and had to put up with a lot more bad treatment than I will put up with now that I am legally allowed to leave whenever I want.

Once my mother and i were in a heated argument about me and my school grades, out of anger i yelled: "Do you even care about my mental health and well being?" my mother then said no and yelled at me to work my a late project. A couple minutes later she brushed it off and was mad at me for being "Grumpy" and she never said that she was sorry. Nor the next day, or the day after that, so on and so forth. Yea it's basically (almost) always the youngest that gets most attention and the oldest gets the most hatred (except me, I'm the oldest and my parents love us equally)
Yeah, between my little sister and me, it's very clear that they favored her more than me. They always supported her extracurricular activities even though it costs a bit (photography and music instrument), while i got scolded when i participating in debate club and got scolded when i asked them to pay for fee to enter competition. I'm not gonna lie that this kind of treatment hurts me the most and i still having hard time moving on from this even though i already have a job.
The only thing with older siblings is they aren't treated like a child and their opinion actually matters unlike the other siblings which "are too young to understand"
