  • Short excerpts from Rubies (the first half of the pdd, the male solo, curtains and other short bits). A glimpse of the ballet back in the days when it was new :)

Loved the musicality and playfulness of these two.

I love villela's explosive energy and jumps and his ny homeboy vibes. I guess that's what Russian audiences liked too -- they gave him so many ovations that against Balanchine's instructions he gave them a Tarantella encore. But I do think that his freestyle style does clash with the refinement of his ballerinas.

Just as certain words in a language cannot be translated into any other language, certain costumes designed for a ballet are synonymous with that ballet. The original Karinska costumes for Balanchine's "Rubies," with their unique "accordion tutus," are no longer used at NYCB. Perhaps the expertise needed to make them no longer exists. The accordion tutus are off beat, luxurious, unique, fun!!!...Karinska was a genius too.

I try watching him, and I try appreciating him and putting him within the context of an era but I'm just not a Edward Villella fan. Even a piece like this which was very much crafted to his abilities and limitations, the sloppiness just bugs me. I feel as if I've seen Rubies done much better even by regional companies. McBride, as usual, is lovely. Anyway, thank you for posting this.

Thanks, Villella was a blunt dancer. no refinement. He was also a dancer who couldn't be bothered taking class with Balanchine. Also, don't like the way he " plays " to the audience and tries to milk the applause.

Miles Montemore He cannot be blamed for not taking class with Balanchine. It was too damaging for the body. Both Kirkland and Peter Martins said so.

Who added the applause? I never heard the NYCB audience clap like they were at a sports event or circus.

Navarre Brixen mario pistoni was a phenomenal dancer whose tecnique was simply stunning infact balanchine offered him principal rank directly but mario never accepted because he wanted to live in milan.belive me mario could dance rings around villella and company
