  • Here is a fantastic video filmed for Canadian television, with the young Suzanne Farrell, Marnee Morris, and Conrad Ludlow. In the corps is a "who's who" of dancers that later became soloists and principals.

    See the music, hear the dance. Suzanne Farrell’s musicality is just otherworldly.

    Sweet memories of dancing the male role in this choreography with Dance Theater of Harlem; in an amphitheater located on a hillside in Verona, Italy. The lovely Lydia Abarca was my partner.

      Wow. I wish I could have seen it. Thank u so much for sharing. The man has to do such hard lifts in Concerto Barrocco. The strain and strength of the male dancer in ballet is incredible! Female humanity owes a great debt to the male ballet dancers who labor so tirelessly in the rendering of the supreme beauty of the female ballet dancers which has given the world such great beauty to gaze upon and fill their soul with.

    This is so incredible. Marnee Morris does that incredible jazzy thing coming front down the stage, Conrad Ludlow is incredible. Such strength. An extraordinarily attentive partner. A beautiful, virile dancer and great technique, Farrell a paragon of elegance. My favore ballet of Balanchine. An eternal masterpiece.

    OMG, that was SO beautiful, fun, and incredible to watch. When I watched this a year ago, I focused on the lissome beauty of Suzanne Farrell and her iconic style; but this time I watched Marnee Morris. Wowza! Fast and precise, with a unique style of her own. Someone else called it “jazzy”, and I agree. And the strength required of Ludlow is amazing, and it appeared he did it with ease. The corps was also wonderful. Thank you for sharing. It was an honor to get to see this. 🥰

    Masterpiece. I can't imagine how he choreographed it. I wonder how it happened. Did he have a room full of dancers and he said okay you do that and you do that. Was it in a day? A session? Did he work it at home and when he came into the studio already had things in his mind? And isn't hard to remember what step you did?

    Is the blonde Sarah Leland? And wondering about Stephanie Saland or Lourdes Lopez? I disagree that Farrell was overrated because OMG the adagio, pure fluidity yet crisp and to tempo on the 1st and 3rd movements. I'd forgotten that supported promenade in penchee/alongee in the adagio. But the corps is also brilliant. Connie Ludlow taught out here for a while, and I had the pleasure of attending one of his partnering classes. Learned so much! Thanks for all you post!

    • @jcliff26
      @jcliff26  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No the second soloist is Marnee Morris. This was shot years before Saland and Lopez joined the company. I never heard Farrell was “overrated.”

      Was guessing about the corps, since you mentioned it was future-star studded. There's a comment way at the bottom that feels Farrell was overrated. Obviously, lots of us disagree!

      I had the tremendous good fortune to see Apollo at the 1982 (?) Stravinsky festival, with Ms Farrell and others. It was the final program. Mssrs Balanching and Kirstein sand Happy Birthday. Symphony in Three Movements was on the program, as was Persephone, in which I was amazed by Gen Horiuchi's virtuosity.
      I'm a retired bassist. I played 1977-98 in the orchestra for the late Cleveland Ballet. We had some Balanchine in our repertoire> I also clocked in 524 Nutcrackers.
