the absolute glee and joy on joaquin's face is wonderful; it's nice to see how much enjoyment he can still get out of ballet despite the decades of work
As always, Joaquin is remarkable, but for me, it’s especially exciting to see Indiana’s speed, clarity in footwork, and musicality. It is incredible to see the working process...something I’ve never had the chance to see with NYCB. It strikes me as especially brave of Indiana to allow the public to see her in process. I am sure that her debut was spectacular
The imbecilic administration (nearly as bad as Martins' reign of terror!) finally bowed to the inevitable and made Woodward a principal. Three or four years overdue, but at last. Of course, they're also giving Unity PHELAN (who is in no way adequate to the task, either technically or artistically) every ballerina role in the Balanchine canon, including Haieff Divertimento and Bizet Adagio. UGH!
This is the best interpretation of Taratella I've seen. Particularly Indiana at 3.55 TO 4:02, 4:08 TO 4:20, and 7:51 to 8:12 - better than all other Tarantellas. It's interesting to see them transition from poise to exhaustion at the end - something unseen in an actual performance.
@Candy Jones I find the russian style soo old fashioned. If I'm in the mood for that, then it's awesome but if that were the only style in the world of ballet, then it'd get boring real fast. Russians are superior technicians, but americans are just so fun to watch!!
I guess if you’re an American, and it’s an American ballet company, then that is where your preference would lie. I think that was Balanchine’s whole point, to translate a European art form onto what he saw as quintessentially American in dancers. American ballet companies probably rank among my least favourite companies, but each to his own I guess.
@@dim9753 it’s not just about Russians versus Americans sheesh. The Paris Opera Ballet ( my favourite ), the Royal Ballet, even the Australian Ballet tend to outclass the American school of ballet. American ballet is very America specific.
@Candy Jones I just don’t have a need to see totally perfect fifth positions and the “elaborate posing” of the Russian style. It’s just far too slow for me to see any excitement in it. Seeing Russian ballerinas perform Balanchine is taxing as well-they just can’t grasp the musical timing and the athleticism/footwork is lost on them.
I was just noticing the same thing. It’s gorgeous on her. Maybe the ballet world will make a shift to more realistic, healthy physiques. I mean, they are athletes so it’s hard not to be so strong and built. It’s so much more beautiful this way.
Joaquin is great! He's like a slender Edward Villella! He has such lightness! He's like skipping through a meadow. And he has a great personality. He lingers a little in the air in his jumps!
I attended the school in the days of Patty McBride. I can see why "Mr. B" choreographed this while she was so young, lithe, perky, and great at turns and quick movements - Her beautiful disposition included total concentration; discipline; flexibility to make instant changes if directed by Mr. B; never coming down hard on herself if she made a mistake; always working incredibly hard to be the best.
I agree. I was a bit younger but I know exactly what you’re talking about as I was at SAB for a while (and then changed direction and went to the Royal Ballet). But the dancers with whom Balanchine worked with directly had magical gifts - they were more lithe, quicker and had super long limbs. They understood him and he coaxed the best from them. His energy was different and he commanded the best efforts from his stable of amazing dancers that “got” him and his philosophy. The whole level seems to have dropped over the years. The répétiteur isn’t Balanchine and frankly I find her demeanor not especially inspiring. And to me, Indiana is under-rehearsed or not quite ready for this role. It’s not great when the male is dancing rings around the female.
I love this variation! The amazing tempo with the fast feet and quick tambourine hands just makes this so enjoyable to watch. Really enjoy Balanchines work especially Jewels and now The Tarantella! Indiana I hope your debut went amazingly well! Good luck for the future 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼
I really like this and I really look up to this dancer as a beginning pre pro because for a bit I thought that ballet dancers should have these skinny twig legs, and she dosn’t and dances so beautifully it just amazes me and really inspires me to do better, so that maybe one day I can be like her
Very enjoyable, and the dancers have amazing stamina. That ballet master sure has good eyes: you can see some of the slight problems when she points them out, but just barely when the number is flying by. The boy is a good partner, and is really helping her with his energy.
If they blow their corrections in performance do they get “in trouble?”. I’m amazed at how these people are athletes as well as super smart. I’d be reduced to a pile of tears. So strong in every way, ballet dancers !
I don't think it's in their best interest to ignore corrections, or blow it. They are so professional by the time they are performing a piece like this, I don't think that would happen :)
As a former professional ballet dancer one would never “blow off” corrections. But in the moment on stage some of these micro-corrections are sacrificed to keep on the music - that’s key. To stay in the role - to stay with your partner. If you end up doing a single instead of a double or don’t square your shoulders enough during a jeté en tournant, well you’ve missed the “ideal” in terms of absolutely technical correction but it’s much more important to really “dance” the ballet by injecting your artistry in the moment. Nobody just arrogantly blows of corrections.
A cliche but Joaquin is THE BEST. He is missed. And Covid or not, it's time for Indiana to be promoted to Principal. Like Joaquin, she is one of a kind.
What a treat to see this. I would like to see the soloist fully listen to the ballet master rather than speaking over her and trying to anticipate what she'll say. Thank you for posting.
Many of the repetatures at NYCB do not nearly understand the spirit that Balanchine wanted however Joaquin is insane. He may not fully understand Mr. B's style but he executes it so well. When he was a guest Men's teacher during my summer at the Rock I learned nothing but awe because I saw him explain things (such as how to turn) when he was easily turning and talking to us without another thought! Beautiful dancer! I will say that the tempo in this video is about 1/3 of what Mr. B would have expected, however. Should be much faster.
one of the few comments I've read which compliments the essential pianist! I'm glad the Kennedy Centre take the trouble to credit her in the info box : the Royal Ballet don't for their youtube vids of classes.

It's so fun and the male dancer makes it all worth while. His smile is so radiant.
Great interview with Megan Fairchild too!
Attitude turn at 6:20 - just spectacular. Beautiful "floating" effect.
I love this piece, this is very demanding physically and leaves a lot of place for personality and joy !
Love the sound of the shoes clacking on the floor
Not so much when you're watching the classics such as Giselle!
@@EVZYL I dont know about that. Makes the dancers seem more human. Adds a creepiness to willis

Her ankles and feet are sooooooo strong. She vaults off the floor!
I’m still wondering what musicality is. Shouldn’t all dancers have this? Isn’t it what dancing is about? (I don’t get it).

The physicality is stunning. What hard work, and what joy they display while doing it.
I love Indiana. Congrats on her promotion to soloist
Thank you for sharing. I Love the artistry and technique of Joaquin De Luz, incorporating the confidence of his maturity. He's brilliant!
I love this rehearsal. I watch it over and over. Wonderful
Such a treat they are allowing the public to watch this. Love watching! Makes me want to get tickets and go see them!!❤️

You actually have them as your avatar ?
Are adorable together...exude so much strength and joy! Very enjoyable to watch!
love this ballet. It's nice to see this cute, but fiendishly difficult Balanchine ballet being passed onto new young dancers in the Company.
Behind the scenes...........= the best.
Fastguitars p
NYC ballet is my fave. Their dancers are so strong, muscular, and fast. Musicality is awesome! Prefer it over everything

Thank you very much. The New York City Ballet very seldom gets to California so these "performances" are a real treat.
Just wonderful!
She has incredible strength!!! I can't even imagine...
So fabulous. So cute. Great dancing. Bravo . Best of luck.
OMG Ms. Woodward is so talented! Well deserved promotion
The girl has nice muscles which i appreciate. She's healthy, strong and elegance.
The model ballet bod.
rain74925 she’s got “heft”.
Most of the dancers in US ballet company are healthy, strong and aesthetic!

@@sloanewang5680 not all of them are healthy… I don’t think American dancers are healthier than others
I love how in Balanchine technique the dancers interact with each other. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I can only imagine how tired they must be! They are amazing!!!!😍
so cool. Brilliant both. Proper tempo too!
This is my first time seeing the choreography of the particular ballet. I love the energy of the movement.

Think how much fun Balanchine must have had with this!
I love watching Joaquin De Luz
Glenn Keenan is a very skilled and perceptive coach who has a lot of great, practical corrections for the dancer. Impressed.
BRAVO! BRAVISSIMO!!! Such superb, lively dancers! Eyecandy at its best - Thank you for sharing this! just watching makes one happy from inside 😊👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
What an amazing ballet master and dancers.
Thank you. It is so lovely to see the New York Ballet dancing at Saratoga Springs landmarks such the Yaddo.
OMG this was such a treat to watch. Well done indeed!
HE IS FANTASTIC!!
Superb! Thank you so much for allowing us in!
Amazing speed does not replace detailed artistry ... you never see it like this outside NYCB. Just wonderful!

Candy Jones was This is the 2nd critical and judgmental comment I’ve read of yours. What gives?
Brilliant & Amazing JDL- Saw NYCB many times at the KC, including this one!!

Wow! Leave it to Balanchine to choreograph such a fun, but difficult piece!!!
Wonderful to see it without costumes. Can really see the details.
Excellent work on this piece
Thanks for sharing! It's so great to see how a professional rehearsal is run.
This ballet is just pure joy if you disagree with me your wrong
wow.....so great
I love this ballet! Anybody who does these roles has a lot to live up to. Villella and McBride rocked these roles!
So fun to watch I love it!
This was so cool to see! I loved the show Friday night and it was great meeting Indiana Woodward after the show. She was so nice!
14:16 JOAQUIN!!! Both were absolutely incredible
Loved watching this!
MARVELOUS!!! BRAVO!!!
I saw Edward Villella dance this when I was in high school. It left quite an impression on me.
Wow so fabulous!
dancers are perfect
I love it! Bravo!
