To think this was filmed 40 years ago, technique has evolved throughout the years, but, wow, the corp de ballet is stellar. Mel Tomlinson brought a huge smile to my face, what a gem he was. Thank you so much for sharing this complete ballet! ❤️

And a word of appreciation to Hershy Kay, who so beautifully orchestrated the ballet (leaving room, in most songs, for a fancy piano solo as published by the composer in George Gershwin's Song Book). Mr. Kay provided the orchestrations for several of Balanchine's "compilation" ballets, always masterfully.

I had just watched the Royal Dutch Ballet performance before I found this, and the difference is pretty amazing. Not a dull moment here. The grace, the light-footedness, nothing rushed . . . Sean Lavery’s Entrance in I Got Rhythm-WOW! But I’m preaching to the choir. I know Mr. B greatly admired Fred Astaire; was he one of the inspirations for this ballet?

This is lovely, truly. I love the abandon with which Patty McBride dances. She is truly free. Not surprising she would pair so well with Eddy Villella. And no surprise either, why Balanchine would pair her with Baryshnikov. As Jacques D’Amboise said: Misha and Eddy shared the same temperament in dancing. Abandon, no self-preservation.Sean Laverne does a lovely effort here, but check the video with Baryshnikov in this solo. Just perfection, in character and sharpness. Thanks for posting. Mr. B.could have called this, New York, New York, for it is really scenes of the city.

The word ADDICTED is overuse and hyper-rated, but "I AM" (!!!) regarding George Gershwin. Sitting-up late one night I discovered these videos (the Who Cares ballet) and MAYBE I'll be inspired to start my ONLINE PIANO lessons centering around my PERSONAL IDOL, GEORGE GERSHWIN.
People often misunderstand Black people's fascination about Gershwin because of his opera Porgy and Bess, ..BUT (!!!) MY PERSONAL LOVE OF HIM, GERSHWIN, IS THAT THE MAN WAS/"IS" SO DAMN GOOD !!! "IF" only I could have a time machine to go back in time to PERSONALLY meet him, ...........

Might it have to do with the fact that Peter left her and married Darci Kistler in 1991? And, shock of all horrors, falsehoods might have emerged? Heather Watts was terrific. I especially loved her in Bugaku with Jock Soto, and the Davidsbündlertanze dancing with Peter of all people.

You must not be a dancer. What McBride has to dance here is technically very difficult. Balanchine never had any interest in her romantically, and her arms and hands are great. I’d suggest you stop looking at my channel. If you continue to make such cruel and ignorant remarks I’ll be more than happy to block you.
