Strandibrough, Fetlar, Ancient Monastic Site Part 2

  • Following a visit by boat to Strandibrough the other week, I returned with a small drone and did a fly over of the ancient monastic ruins from the air.
    You can clearly see the cluster of buildings and the wall running the length of Strandibrough.
    Strandibrough lies off the north coast of Fetlar, separated by a narrow channel with high cliffs and strong tidal waters. On the island the remains of about a dozen small buildings and a wall can clearly be see among the dense vegetation.
    No detailed survey or excavation has been conducted of Strandibrough as far as I know. It is thought to be an ancient monastic site. One of the buildings is notable as it has a large white stone at the end of the room. Perhaps this was a place of worship? Or the main hall? It is certainly an atmospheric and mysterious place.
    The tune is an old Fetlar melody called the ‘Greenland Man’s Tune’.
