  • Named Funzie Girt on the map, pronounced Finnigirt, it is an ancient wall that crosses Fetlar, North to South. The legend is that it was built in a day by the Finns, that were known to possess much knowledge and magic.
I set out to trace the Finnigirt across Fetlar starting from da Vallahamars in the south of Fetlar, not far from the West Broch of Hubie, it then disappears a bit into the Mires of Hubie but is very prominent as you walk up through Rivs Daal to the Loch of Setter. It pauses at the shore of the Loch.
I pick up da Finnigirt again at da Flödens where it travels on past da Haltadans. This is the heartland of Fetlar and trowie country.
From here I had to trace its route, pick out bits of its line buried in heather and moss, but there are some more obvious sections to keep you on track until you reach the Whilsa pund. It almost stops with some occasional stones crossing the Pund suggesting a possible route. It can be clearly seen at the other side of the Pund again heading up over the hill between Stackaberg and the Vord Hill. This is where the wall is at it’s most prominent and easy to follow. You look down on the old crofts of Colbinstoft, Gru and Russetter, and follow the daek all the way to the high banks at Muckle Finnigirt Geo. A reward of spectacular views of the Blue Banks, a stretch of cliffs over 400 foot high.
There’s many places along the Finnigirt with interesting history, and stories of folk encountering the trows. A good afternoons hike.
The tunes I’m playing are a couple that Fetlar fiddler the late John Robertson o’ da Knowes played. He called the first one ‘Coil Awa da Hawser’, the second one is ‘Bruno’s tune’. John played at the dances in the old Fetlar Hall at Leagarth and was noted for his high energy reel playing and he would keep time stamping both feet at the same time. Bruno was a lady who stayed in a peerie stone house next to ours in Hubie, in the mid 1800s.
