Well said Chris. Must admit I’m losing my passion for fragrance a little, alot of over hyped, over priced cr*p out there now. Gonna use up what I have and then just replace my most favourite bottles.
I could not agree more. I've handed over my habits and addictions to wrist watches. I'm up to 4 nice watches. I haven't even bought anything fragrance wise in awhile. I think I'm at the point where it hit me that I have enuff cologne for me till I pass, and the rest my son can have, it will be enuff for him to wear his whole life and he can leave the rest to his kids.

I buy my fragrances from The Essence Vault now. They have lots of different fragrances, inspired by all the big ones. Very cheap, high quality fragrances. In my collection, I've got Creed Aventus, Creed Silver Mountain Water, Creed Himalaya and Creed Royal Water from The Essence Vault. Total cost was no more than £60 for them!
Fragrances in general are actually fairly cheap to make. It's the complicated bottles and the brand and marketing you are paying for.

I heard these exact statements describing ultra blue. But ultra blue has been absolutely amazing for me. One of my favorites actually with outstanding performance. So I take this with a grain of salt
On my skin this projects like a beast. After 30 mins it transformed from what smelled to me like watered down woods to a loud sweet fragrance that reminds me of ysl ultime and its pretty consistent for around 7 hours
L'homme ultime ysl is my favorite but it's discontinued, I'll buy this if it reminds me YSL
Wow this is exciting to hear. I just picked up Platinum, but Ultime is my absolute favorite. Can’t wait to give it a full wearing
Note sure why but this fragrance only lasts around an hour on my skin
Several days ago I spotted this new release on a well known UK Perfume site and, after seeing this review, I'm so glad I resisted temptation. I learnt from my mistake with the previous release, Ultra Blue, another flop, which I bought immediately and regretted it ever since. Thank you Chris for giving an honest review.
I got a coconut smell similar to Virgin Island Water

Just bought it this week and I couldn't disagree with this review more. "I couldn't pinpoint it to any specific fragrance" and "smells similar to quite a lot of other things" are somewhat contradictory statements. The truth is that this smells like nothing else on the market, at least among the things that are widely available, it is quite unique and not generic at all. The one fragrance it does remind me of a bit is the long discontinued Davidoff Good Life. I find the original Explorer to be generic, because it's one of the several takes on the Aventus, and Platinum being fairly original, makes it Mont Blanc's best fragrance in my opinion.
Very agree, original Explorer have more in common with other fragrances. This Platinum smell so much different, like clean, fresh and woody, no other fragrance comes to mind. But original Explorer with that leather, bergamot, patchouli it's a trend right now.
I think Mont Blanc explorer captured lightning in a bottle so to speak. The blue one and this one just aren’t nearly as good. I also like that you brought back the old music.

I understand one's take on fragrances is completely subjective and while it may work for certain individual, it may not for others. I do however have great appreciation for honest and no fluff reviews such as this so nicely done, Chris!

Only MB I like is Starwalker. Mostly because it's a cheapie. Great calming bamboo shower-gel type scent, for when you want to just feel clean n' fresh.

Great review Chris. Not a surprise really. MB has really been going downhill for a while with those sneaky ghost flankers of Individuel and Starwalker. Thought they'd take a hint by going after Sauvage, BdC, Y, Layton or something but I guess not. Good on them for attempting to get Givaudan to innovate for them...but maybe it wasn't in the budget. Ps, the mint in Legend Special Edition 2014 (the blue bottle) does a decent job of giving me that briskness if that's what you're looking for. Might've been nice if they just riffed on that one.

I actually didn’t expect anything special from Montblanc. I thought it’s going to smell like Aventus cologne. But yeah i have a sample on the way and let’s see how’s it going to smell

Does this make you wonder about the whole creation and approval pipeline/process in major fragrance industries before they starting throwing all their money at marketing and production? That kind of baffles me after this review. Makes me genuinely fascinated to want to have witnessed it all. 💡🤔

IDK the OG explorer the 30 ml always smells better then the 60 ml idk way have several bottles.

Forgot I requested a sample of this, well anyway it arrived through the post this morning - at the time of typing this.
The way I'm smelling/interpreting it is it's like if you sprayed a tiny bit of Terre D'hermes on a shirt then left it in the cupboard for a week, there's a faint hint left behind. A phantom scent.
Terre D'hermes shouts and screams whereas this waits outside alone until the party is over.
I'd buy both to be honest and be perfectly happy.
Montblanc missed out making this a Aventus Cologne inspiration 😑the color scheme of the bottle is perfect for it

Great review! Given the violet + cedar, i actually thought it could be somewhat hinting at Fahrenheit, or given the marketing images, to Silver Mountain Water. Badly disappointed from your report. I remain slightly curious to smell it, but hopes annihilated. Anyway appreciating the review!

Got mine this week and I do enjoy the opening a lot. I actually get a cucumber / Gin Tonic vibe, which unfortunately fades away quickly and turns into yet another standard woody scent. Not a great projection and longevity, so unfortunately not a must-have and won't rebuy.

I honestly think Explorer is take on Moncler Pour Homme because the advert is very similar with snowy mountains inspiration and secondly the smell is similar fresh-green-woody-piney. Maybe its like Platinum Egoiste/Fierce and Moncler Pour Homme fusion.

It's only because you like the dark, woody, smokey fragrances. It's probably none of those so of course you will give it a negative vibe.
THIS is why i stopped buying designer fragrances. I can go to a department store to smell new fragrances a year or two later, and I STILL smell that similar dna every designer company makes. Maybe, a slight difference, but that's it.
Niche is waaay overpriced.
Middle eastern is the way to go. Presentations alone are worth the price, very, very affordable, but best of all...the quality and variety of scents are so different. You can wear one and honestly say no one will smell like you.
Yea because the middle east isn't known for cloning big designer fragrances lol. And middle eastern is constantly full of shtinky oud base notes.

And that nasty oud smell you don't like...some designer companies are adding oud to their lines.
Oud is not for everybody. Especially for youngsters or the untrained nose. Oud is elegant or sophisticated smelling when worn.

I think this would be a decent office or gym scent. I like it more than the original Explorer. You're right that it doesn't really perform well though.

Montblanc Explorer was a huge disappointment for me, its projection and longevity is terrible and it's not very distinct. It's a decent inexpensive fragrance, but nothing to write home about.
This last on me all day and I’ve gotten a few compliments at the office🤷♂️
Maybe my expectations had been lowered. Tried it today, really liked it! 5 hours later and i can still smell it. Reminds me of Prada L'Homme, and dare I say I prefer it.
Given the color scheme they should have made it an Aventus Cologne clone.
Or even like a Chanel Egoiste Platinum kinda thing

I got buttery popcorn smell in a bad way. I know I'm not the only one cause the guy next to me sniffing fragrances at the store said the same thing. Maybe it was a ruined bottle. I don't know but it is my first dislike from Montblanc. I will try this again just to make sure.

Explorer is one of the most overhyped fragrances I see reviewed. I purchased a bottle several years ago when it was first released and it was only available at Macy’s. It was a blind buy and I was disappointed. It’s a decent fragrance, but nothing to write home about.
Being it’s an Aventus clone which 99% of people adore, I’d say you may be in the minority with that opinion.
Saving 400 quid on Aventus was enough motivation for me. It isn't identical, but it close enough that I can save a car payment. Especially the new Aventus...which is very weak from what I hear.
@@iio58 There are better Aventus alternatives and cheaper ones. Al Haramain L’Aventure is one of them. Also, Frapin The Orchid Man is better but is still less expensive than Aventus.

The only mont Blanc I own right now is individuel. And that's only BC it got discontinued and the tester was really cheap. Like under $30 cheap.
Not a huge fan. Smells like a brand new dryer sheet stuffed in each nostril. Super synthetic. I assume all mont Blanc scents have that about them
