- In this video I show how to properly maintain the drive chain on a YAMAHA TW200. Taking care of the chain is very important, Yamaha recommends you clean lube and adjust your chain every 300 miles or after you wash it or if it gets very wet. You can save a lot of money when you learn how to do this yourself. thanks for watching!

TDubsKid what is the chain size in the tdub? I bought a 2019 tw200 yesterday used with 149miles on it. And it didn’t come with a Manuel and the one in line list everything except for chain size!! Please Me Tdubskid

Thanks for the reply there, tdubs. I put on a DID 428 X chain and not getting much stretch at all and everything is to Specs. My slack is about 1 34 inches. ( Old School here in inches 😂 ). So should be good. Maybe I should learn to Shift better also maybe that’s part of it. Anyway th@nks again and stay safe. James.
I threw my chain while cruising through the woods. I had a moment of disappointment when I thought I was leaving my TW in the woods and walking home.
I had my phone with me and dialed up this video. It was a few minutes of youtube meditation. I was able to get the chain free and back on the rear sprocket. When I got home I used this vid to adjust my WAY out of adjustment chain.

a paint brush a Dawn Liquid soap to clean bike. If the chain has a removable master link I would remove and brush it clean with soap and water. Blow the chain dry and lower it into a bucket filled with a 50/50 oil to wax mix. Put the bucket into a hot plate and let the chain soak for an hour. You'll see bubbles meaning lubricant is getting into places that sprays don't. wipe excess off, careful...it's hot.install and adjust as necessary. This is called "waxing the chain". Perfect for O ring chains. I'm 75 and have done this for decades and my chains have lasted for years.

Thanks for another great video. Basic routine maintenance like this makes chains and sprockets last a long time. If you ride in wet, muddy, nasty conditions, this needs to be done more often. Keep up the good work.

great video bro ,,I just put a new 48T rear sprocket on my WR250r (from a 43T) and had to get a new chain
all the local dealership had was a non -O-ring chain,so I have been having to lube it and watching this video gave me ideas

Sweet! I just did this on my Tdub. My chain had a lot of road gunk Because I road it all winter up her in good ol' Vancouver. I never once rode in the rain

Yeah but you know how well they go in the snow. I ended up getting a bunch of corrosion on fasteners and other bits from salted roads.. I cleaned most of it tho.
Hi , I have a TW125 here in Suffolk in England . Had it from new in 2004 . Done 33000 miles now , mostly road work . I take the chain off and clean it in parrifin oil every 3 months , about 600 - 800 miles . Blow it out with the air line and then boil it up in a fat called link life . Penetrates in to the rollers . Chain lube often as well . I'll get 14000 miles out of a chain and sprocket set . 18000 miles out of a set of tyres , smooth on road off road , trailwing I think . Believe it or not I'm still on the original lead acid battery ! Still going strong . Enjoying the videos .

check the distance from your swing arm pivot to your axle on both sides with the adjusters set at the same numbers. Mine showed a full 2 detents difference. it was something like 3/16 off.

My Tw has the same situation and I have talked to other tw-ers on forums that set their snail adjusters to different number notches just to get their rear axle bolt and swing arm bolt to be square on both sides

Just a tip. The older TW's have a cotter pin on a castle nut for the axle. Changes things just a bit.

just tossed my new skid plate on! alright next question my man Ive been working on my bike all winter to cold to ride on the southside of Chicago. And just realized that I have no idea where my key is. called yamaha said I gotta take out the ignition switch and send it into them. Never have had to do something like that so let me know if you have any ideas.
oh dang sorry to hear you lost it, should be pretty easy just a few bolts and gotta disconnect some wire connectors behind the headlight

hey, not much just working on new videos haha. nice! and I just use regular fuel. probably best to get ethanol free gas if you can find it especially if you let it sit for a long time, but if you ride often you shouldn't need it, thanks!

thanks! glad to hear you enjoy them, not exactly, but I had some companies send me some free neat products that will show up in the next couple videos. oh nice, I love that stuff, the cleaner gets the chain really clean. seems like the lube is more for regular chains and wax is for sealed (x ring or o ring), with maybe a light amount of lube first just to keep the chain from rusting

hey no problem. you will love an o or x ring chain, you almost never have to adjust it, the stock one I had would stretch almost after every ride, it depends on what your doing, I recommend using one on brakes, axles and most engine stuff, especially the valve adjusters! I see people who have that nut loosen up and get lost in the engine all the time. but you don't need it for a lot of things, as long as you have a good idea how tight stuff should be, you just don't want to over tighten things and strip out threads or snap bolts off,

I’ve been adjusting my tension on my chain according to these steps and it seems like I have to do it somewhat often. Is that a sign of a worn chain? Or how often should this be done? I’ve also not cleaned the chain thoroughly in quite a while, so would that cause premature stretching? I’m about to order some cleaning supplies via your link pretty shortly here. the stock chain stretches crazy fast, it was out of spec like every 100 miles for me. switched to an X-ring chain and almost never has to be adjusted. no problem! good chain maintenance is key. it ends up flying off on the people who don't check and adjust it
Hello again Tdubs: I was wondering, I am going to buy a after market X chain and I have under 1000 miles on my 2023 TW200, do you think I need to change my Sprockets also or is the mileage low enough that it should be fine without changing them? Thanks again. James. . 👍
best to replace them all at once but it might be ok to only replace the chain with such low mileage

Hello TDubskid, I was wondering if you are still ok with adjusting your Chain Slack at 3mm? I am asking because mine is at same and do not want to overload my Gear Box. I had mine adjusted at one time at 1 7/8th inches and to me it seemed that it has to much Slack even though it is in Spec. Thanks Tdubs.

I was talking of what we call in french " le sabot moteur " : this is the aluminum protection that is installed under the engine, to protect it from chocs while riding out-road. In the " oil draining vidéo, you are talking of removing the skid plate ( I am not sure if I spell it OK ) . On that vidéo, you still have the original yamaha skid plate. On the Chain tensionning vidéo, you have a new skid plate, plain aluminum that seems to protect more your engine from the bottom : Could you tell me where did you get from ?

it's all good. glad you found it! that skid plate is great for protecting the engine from whatever you throw at it. the only bad thing I can say is it amplifies the engine noise a bit
btw, do you bother with cleaning the air intake filter? if so, how frequently do you clean it?

Hello tdubs: I have a question about my Chain on my TW200, when shifting is Chain Slap normal? In gear also when I get on and off the throttle I’ll hear a Chain Slap if you know what I mean. I don’t want to break the chain. 😬. Any help with this is appreciated. Thanks tdubs. James.
Hey just check the chain slack like I showed in the video. If its in spec your good, the stock chain sucks and needs to be adjusted almost every 100 miles

I was riding in the road today and my chain popped off. Got it home and noticed my chain tension was at 4 inches. I havent checked the tension in over 500 miles. Do you think it slowly loosened over time, or do you think there was something major that happened that made it that loose? I'm going to tighten it tonight, but Id like to figure out where I went wrong so it doesnt happen again.
dang, and yeah the stock chain stretches so insanely fast, I would have to adjust mine about ever 100 miles it seems. best to check it quickly before riding. or get an x- ring, mine hasn't stretched even a little bit after 250 miles with the new chain
How hard is the TW200 to get started in the colder season?
not too bad, you gotta use the choke. and let it warm up, much harder to start when you let it sit for too long
You can use pressure washer on chain, just don't blast it top down so to avoid o-rings and no steam pressure washer.

Does your back tire get slippery or sling lots of chain lube after doing this process ?
Not really it flings a little but but not bad and not for long
Pressure washers are a good way to eventually destroy every bearing in your bike. The water will blow right by the lips on the seals.

yes I did I got a 47 tooth and love it! got it on procycle, make sure to buy the bolt kit too. wish I would have made a video on it but it was before I really got into making vids

Looks like a JT sprocket with flat side against the hub. Seems like there’s some debate if the flat side or the recessed side goes against the hub. I’m about to change mine to a 47 a well. Would you put yours on differently next time or do you think it really makes that much difference in the chain line? Thanks! Great videos and good luck with your knees!
What kind of motorcycle lift do you have? It was a struggle walking my tw200 back and forth cleaning it today lol
it's one from harbor freight, they also have a cool roller thing that makes that easy
TDubsKid Thanks, that’s actually the one I’ve been looking at! Yeah I figured I might as well get a lift since I want to try and learn how to work on the bike myself. It’s a ‘94 in good condition but just giving it new parts and TLC

Is there a reason you use the maxima chain guard instead of the maxima chain wax? Just wondering what kit I should buy. I have a stock chain on a 2016 TW
they are both pretty good, I have only used chain guard, wax may be a little bit better since there is less fling off and they say it attracts less dirt (but i'm not sure how true that is) ill have to try the wax next time around

TDubsKid put your bike on the stand or take it a ride to warm chain up before you use chain wax... it’s way better than maxima lube and less mess.. been using it for years. Great product.. big cheese knows.. also dirt won’t stick to it as much and wear out your chain and sprockets as fast. Also wanted to say I am a 50 yr old been riding and building bikes since around 8 with my dad.. your a very talented young man with great future ahead of you. I really like you ideas for videos... you have such great editing skills.. and a great personality to boot.. god gave you a gift . Keep it up.. love the camping series lots of great locations.
What i do is put the bike up on a stand, put the bike int first gear and slip the clutch so the wheel barely moves. It makes cleaning and lubing very easy and fast
that's not a bad idea if your careful, it would just suck to get a finger caught in the chain and sprocket
i use the sludge brush so my finger only come close when i take off the excess chain lube

After getting water on the chain from the hose wipe it down and then spray WD-40 on it to displace any water that got inside the chain. You should not spray chain lube directly on a wet change
I usually wipe it dry and or let it sit for a while before putting on the lube, no chain problems, with almost 10,000 miles on it but the wd-40 is a good idea thanks!
How many miles do you have on your TW? And what year is it?
I think I have about 7400 miles on it now bought it new, it's a 2014
I bought my new in 2014 also, but I think I only have 350 miles on it. I've got to do some of the maintenance you've mentioned and get to riding. You inspire me!

What tires are you running?

no problem! shinkos are awesome indeed, i think i'm going to try some balancing beads in the front since I have a Little bit of vibration in the front
Balancing beads add a significant amount of cost to a tire change over clamp on or stick on lead wheel weights. I've tried them a few times but each time, anywhere from 15 to 30 dollars per tire change if you can't salvage the beads from the tire/wheel. You can find used HarborFreight static balancers pretty cheap or even build your own all day long and stick on and clamp on (for spokes) wheel weights are pretty cheap. Up front cost should be between 50 and 75 dollars but should be cheaper in the long run I think.
One area where the tire beads have the advantage is when you get a lot of mud buildup on a wheel or tire. They can keep the wheel balanced to a certain point where as with stick on or clamp on wheel weights you may get a heavy spot until you can get the mud knocked off.
I had one for a day and came to the conclusion it handled like a 2 wheel deive 4 wheeler...if that makes any sense 😂

Woulda been a great video if you didnt spend 3/4 of it cleaning your bike. The title of the video was chain adjustment not how to wash.
