Dean Ormston has some really visually interesting stuff later on, like his work on Black Hammer wit Jeff Lemire. Crazy thing though his that he had a stroke and was able to fully recover his drawing style!

His (& Mills) Slaine The Horned God is excellent also with this juxtaposition of cartoon, paint and gore! One of my absolute favourites.

You guys should get Colin MacNeill on the show for a Shoot Interview. Colin is an absolute gem of a person and his arts in that collection was my favourite stuff.

Yep came here to say exactly the same: that run is amazing, probably my fave NTW story to be honest.
      *SPOILERS*
Love that scene where they have to cut Torquemada out of his Nemesis-proof armour by rerouting his entire spaceships power to a single laser scalpel point just so they can get him out…

John Hinklenton! Please check out his "100 Months" graphic novel. It's his "swansong", created the same year he died.

I’d love it, if you guys would go through the British run of Toxic Comics. For me, the best mixture of writers and artists, pure 90’s goodness. 🤞

john Hinklentons most iconic work in 2000ad was his run on Nemesis the Warlock, which was set in 80's england (present day for the time) Torquemada is a neo nazi skinhead character perpetually rotting and there is a great battle with nemesis with him wielding a chainsaw or hedge trimmer or something. the art is black AF figures are very EGon Sheile like, distorted as fuk. After Kevin Oneill it was Hinkletons work that stood out the most for that series...it was morbid, grotesque and ultraviolent. perfect for teenage me in mid 80s listening to SLayer and Megadeth reading these things xx

I don't know if this stuff feels "outlaw" to an American audience, but I bought this stuff straight out of newsagents as a kid. Some of it was published in Judge Dredd Megazine, which is a sister publication to 2000AD and it sold pretty well. In terms of British comics of the time, it was pretty mainstream.

I used to buy the magazine these appeared in, it was called RAW & was (briefly) a rival to other rock magazines like Kerrang! & Metal Hammer in the late 80's/early 90's. As a fan of rock, comics & Bisley it was exciting to see these strips, it was like "the guys who put this magazine together get me!"

You guys mentioned Jamie Hewlett, he's also originally from 2000 AD, his most well known 2000 AD comic is Hewligan's Haircut (which he did with Peter Milligan).

This was the only strip i regularly read in my non comic teenage years, since it came in a Portuguese edition of the Rock Power monthly magazine. Really funny stuff for a 16 yo kid at the time.

I had to laugh when you talked about the painted colour not printing well on the old 2000AD stock. You're spot on... it absolutely did NOT print well on that toilet paper they were using back in the day! Holding a gloss reprint of Bisley's Slaine next to the original is an experience...Especially when you grew up looking at and loving the muddy browns of old 2000AD's. The colour and clarity of modern printing makes a reread like a religious revelation. Oh yeah, one book absolutely worth looking at (ideally when its printed well) is the Dredd story "America". It's painted by Colin Macneil, who did one of the stories featured here, and it's brilliant.

Great episode, always down for some Biz. I got some of the Slane issues of 2,000 AD back in like '89 or '90, that stuff blew me away (so much so that I cut up the comic and pasted panels to the wall of my childhood bedroom). If y'all haven't checked that stuff out, Bizley doing a barbarian is pretty special.

  • @wasteyelo1
    @wasteyelo1 ปีที่แล้ว

This is great to see again. I used to hide my Biz era 2000ad under my bed, like it was porno. 🤣 I love his line work more than his painted stuff. Martin Emond had a anarchic style similar to Biz.

I love Bisley's art especially his 2000 AD stuff. Its very punk and heavy metal which fits the tone and satirical nature of stories such as Judge Dredd.
Fun Fact for those who don't know. The John Major Block panel which is seen around 5:06 ish is a parody of real life UK Prime Minister of the early to mid 90s of the same name lol.

Bisley's violent scenes are sublime, often funny, and utterly gratuitous. But John Hicklenton's art is visceral and truly disturbing. The Hicklenton stuff in here was originally b+w inkwork, and it suffers much from being coloured.
