Grain Bin Remodel: 35 Degree Auger through the Wall

- This project took a while. 27 foot bin, 7 rings tall. 14 inches to bottom of floor. 6 inch unload. 2 horse auger motor. The sweep will cover 345 degrees, and the last pile can be pushed over to the sweep. And guess what will never happen??? No elbow to plug, no tractor to start for a secondary auger. Pure quietness while unloading from the bin.

I have the paper showing my work, but I decided o against giving a full math tutorial. Don't worry, I have another bin to remodel just like this. Maybe I'll lay out the math then.

Well done young man, well done. For what its worth, used through the roof for many years you wont' be disappointed. Won't peel off like silicon. Sealed up the joints on our 1466 cab to keep leaks out. Even works on roofs.

Everything depends on priorities,
weather, money and the unknown. Things will get done....when they get done. I'm sure in a perfect world you might do some things differently but we are far from a perfect world. As the trainer said to the boxer...."Keep swinging"!

Nice fab work. Hopefully that through the roof works out for ya as someone else said it should. We did something similar a few years back, took the floor out of a 7,000 bu bin and poured an inverted concrete cone in it and set an auger like that to feed a dryer. Used everything under the sun but always got water seeping through. Never an issue since corn doesn’t stay in the bin long. Have to try some of that stuff on it.

That floor was put in backwards, compared to any I’m aware of. Usually floors are started away from the door and out auger, allowing the subsequent planks to be set down into the previous one. Your planks are 180° opposite. They obviously work the way they’re installed, but you work would have been easier had the planks been installed as I’m familiar with.
Pulling floors up is easy in concept, but gives a good workout. I’ve helped pull and install several floors. Good looking job.
Well, the floor was installed correctly, I just started backwards and didn't take up all the floor.

It is installed correctly, yes, in that it’s not in danger of collapsing. That’s not an issue at all in my mind. Your installation round the pit should work fine.
All I’m saying is that every floor I’ve been around, (including ones I’ve helped take up, reinstall, and seen installed by bin crews) is installed starting away from the door, where yours was in essence started at the door. The first piece installed being set so that it has the “female” half of the joint, so that the next plank is set down from the top, instead of having to lift the side of the first piece up and slide the second piece under.

Nice work! The only thing I would suggest is in the gate piece where the hole is to put a carriage bolt through(head inside) to keep the gate from pulling out all the way.The perfect time for it to come out is with a full bin,and no way to get to it

Impressive job fabbing that well and auger then getting the floor smoothly mated to it. That cable anchor idea looks simple and effective. Question: Is your slide / cover rod going to be 90* from the auger or did you do some serious trickery under the floor to get the rod out the same direction as the auger? Regarding your "late harvest", I'm with you that most commenters don't understand growing / raising specialty crops / products. My guess is that most years the produce, chickens, eggs and greenhouse carry the weight on your place. Probably on about 5-10% of your total acres, too. The row crops, cattle and hay spread the risk, offer diversity and synergy with the specialty stuff, and let you cash in when it all comes together on a good year. I'll bet getting that grain bin finished will take some pressure off your corn harvest and give you a lot more flexibility. Keep your eye on the prize! Thanks for a very cool video. Hmm, I guess I didn't film the gate rod; it is 90 degrees from the auger. You'll see it two videos from now.

It is very common to set drying floors on cinder block. I am not wild about it, but I guess it works. Yeah, the other two will have work done, eventually.
Won't the pressure of the grain slightly compress the auger housing? In turn pinching or binding the auger? Just a thought. Thats all........ that auger looks a little well let's say "gently used " lol. I hope it work well for you.
The paint isn't new, but the flighting isn't worn. There is also grain under the auger. And the tubing is stronger than you'd expect.
Jacob hour come you didn't put a vertical auger outside where that old one can out from, it would of been more work to get that all set up bet they are nice to unload out of, but I suppose you already had that other auger laying around the farm some where!
I have been collecting floors and bin parts the last couple years. This auger came with one set of parts. The vertical unload augers take some power to run, and I figure the base where the grain changes direction would be troublesome especially if water got in.
@@boehmfarm4276 Jacob they do take power to run grain straight up an can be a problem where the transition box is, some times easier is the way to go!! Spare parts always good to have around!!
Hello Jacob, does the new auger need support struts inside the bin, or can it do without?
Right now, it's doing without. I think it will be fine.
What do you do with the old floor pieces?
There were only three planks that were replaced because of rust. I can cut off the rusty bit and use them on the next bin project if need be.
I'm sure your not finished yet but why so steep?
Not out far enough to fill dump truck from our angle 🤔🤷♂️
It sticks out five feet. With a little spout action outside, it'll throw it a little farther. Truck will have to be pulled up right along side the bin.

Are you going to be able to park right beside the bin and load grain trucks no baby auger needed?
That is the half the point of this setup, which forces the junk out front to get moved.

How do you regulate the lid, is it by hand or what?
There is a rod to pull out the side of the bin. In two videos, you'll see.

That floor would of been a lot easier if you had started on the correct end
I didn't take all the floor out and didn't want to.

What happened to the original auger in the ben
The poor flighting plum wore out at the elbow.

we have 3 Grain bins with low curbs and have to dig out them stupid unloads every year to fit loading augers underneath. this is a good idea we may use for when we install an air floor in the next year or two

Problem is no sweep can ever be used a lot of shoveling
