How Farms Work by Ryan Kuster is a TH-cam channel based in rural Potosi, Wisconsin.
Our mission is to teach those who didn't grow up on a farm what the farming life is like.
These videos show the Kuster family working together raising cattle and crops. We believe everyone who wants to know more about farming should be able to share the farming experience with us and we look to educate the world on many essential agriculture topics.
How Farms Work takes place on ~1,100 acres with around 75-200 cattle at any given time. Four John Deere tractors are currently used on the farm, which are a 4020, 4640, 7600, and 8235R.
Your family farm is a true family farm, everyone pitches in to help.
Your policy of working smarter not harder is a good one.
Weld some angled brooms (with removable pins) to the backside of that sweeper and let it clean itself.
You are getting really good at driving that truck Ryan
Thanks!
Hoping you get an automatic hopper door opener and an auto tarp roller for Christmas. Love the show.
They are both nice to have!!!
Another very well done video Ryan. One of the nice things that comes with running your own operation is you can the job your own way every time! Taking the safe way is the smart way always imo. Thanks Ryan and tske care.
Hey pal. Checking in from North Central Illinois here. Big fan of your page. I just wanted to say that I really thought it was cool how you overlaid the 4 bits of video of you sweeping up the floor of the first bin. That was cool to watch. I work for FS Grain at one of our elevators here in Illinois and sweeping is one of my favorite tasks around the elevator.
Seems like they could put some kind of a scraper on the bottom of the auger guard so it would clear out all the grain.
Great video, Ryan. Thanks.
SAFER IS ALWAYS THE BEST WAY, especially when working alone. "Survive today so you can still fight tomorrow!"
Hey,... Did you know, if you follow behind the sweep auger, work the corn to the sweep with a broom and scoop it over the sweep auger with a shovel, then clean up with the broom and scoop again. Keep following the sweep auger that way, when you are done, the bin is clean
4x the effort of letting it go twice around the bin and sweeping it once in 15 minutes when you’re done. Never have to lift a shovel. There’s a good 300 bushels it leaves behind after the first pass.
I really like how clean of a set up you have
Thanks Ryan, I learned a lot on this one!
Best part about been your own boss you can do it how ever you want. Good work keep it up.
Awesome job of editing, Great Video!
Watching these video as your editing must give you a good feeling, being able to sort of step back say I did that. Cheers Phil
Great video Ryan 👍
We clean out our bins the same way. I've seen sweeps go around the bin way faster than that. We have safety stops that stop the sweep every time around just in case somebody falls or something like that. You have to lift the sweep over it. Thanks for the video.
I'm a Facility Manager of a grain elevator Ryan the answer to question is its a major safety issue. I've been in the grain elevator business for 22 yrs I've chased behind many sweep augers. Doing it the way you are doing it is the best and safest way.
Another great video Ryan thanks again stay safe always
Love the video Ryan keep it going man .God Bless .
Hi Ryan,You and Travis are two hard working men. Take Care and Be Safe.
Ryan its ur farm u do it the way u want
For those that are complaining about how to "clean the bins properly" and saying he should do it this way or that. When you get out there to his place maybe then he'll do it your way but until then, his bins not yours so if he wants to use a water hose and to float the kernels out it's his call on it.
Snow shovel works pretty good for cleaning bins
Farmers, always working always working hard
great vid Ryan thanks for sharing..
Love the flat floors in the bins, our first bins had the corrugated floors, real pain to clean out and grain always sifted under the outside edges.
Both of these bins have corrugated floors in them. Most grain bins do because that is how you move air through them. If the floor is solid how would you move air through the grain?
@@jeffgixer5185 you mean perforated for air to flow through. Our first bins went up in the early 70's, 18 ft diameter 3500 bushel.
safety is always first
That’s one cool flat top you got there love it.
U 4 guys work good together.
It's so gratifying watching people do a neat job.
Great video as always
Something that might make the sweeping faster. I'm a FF and we have to wash and clean the floors all the time. We use basically a long squeegee on a broom handle. We angle it slightly and just walk. It pushes it over based on the angle. If you did that here you could just walk the perimeter and spiral inward. Great video!
I've found that a mud rake ( the tool for spreading out concrete) works really well. You are pulling the grain instead of pushing it or scooping it
I wait until the sweep won’t get any more before I touch a broom lol
Nice shifting on the truck!
I had a thought about your air gage for your axle weight. When filling on the drive axles release your brakes on the truck and then on the tandem axle release those. It should give you a better reading then if the brakes are set. It worked for me when I used to haul corn syrup in a tanker.
Yey another good video like always
I always swept and shovel behind sweep saves time.
If you wait for the sweep to level out you can do the bin with a couple snow curling shovels. Or you can get a cycloidal separator and SWEEP the bin out while sucking all the chaff and crack and blowing it out at the same time.
Nice editing!
Ryan saw how you started your truck. In 20+ years driving semis found it was easier on the starter to push the clutch in when starting, the starter dosen't burn up as fast that way. That said looks like you in joy driving your rig
Be safe Ryan..... always think safety... farming dont need to be any more dangerous than it is
Great video
nice and interesting video, thx for sharing !
if you wire your Bin fans so that they run backwards you can pull all the dust back out of the Bin when you're cleaning it out then you don't have to wear your respirators and get all Dusty
You can add a hinged flat piece of steel by the door mounted to the sidewall so when the power sweep comes around it hits the flat iron and can't proceed any further for safety. My sukup bin came with one mounted to the bin and I have the power sweep such as you.
I like watching grain vids
Awesome video
Good video Ryan yal be safe
We do it the way you do with a power sweep. Different than the old removable sweeps.
I agree with you, why pay for a power sweep system if your going to opt to hop in and do manual labor each and every time and have to don PPE. Sounds a bit redundant to me. When the power sweep has finished then go in and tidy up.
That’s like taking the weed eater to the yard before you mow.
Try using a snow shovel (push blade) on your first pass then switch to the broom. I find it way easier than pushing all that with a broom.
People who follow the sweep and scope are crazy lol calm down with that.
Hey, dont listen to others. You do it safe. A farmer from my hometown in northeast Nebraska had to cut off his own foot cause it was caught in a power sweep and he was alone. Safe may not always be the fastest. But who cares. Your always safe. Keep it up.
I must say, the techniques you used for emptying the bins and making this video were good ones. After your safety video from a few weeks ago, I can see why it would be a bad thing to be inattentive inside the bins, especially if the power sweep is running. You had mentioned last fall that the flooring of the Sukup bin was reputed to be a bit harder to clean. It did not look like it was appreciably more difficult from the camera's vantage point. (It also looked like we had multiple Ryans in the bin at one time, so looks can definitely be deceiving.) Do you still have any grain stored at the satellite farm along Hwy U near Burton? I guess the coast is clear for the new crop when it's time to harvest, but you have to get it in the ground first! Thanks for the video.
We have Sukup Bin and the power sweep has a stop so it doesn't "break loose" and chase you down
May want to look into the rollertrap doors for you trailer. Turn with your finger tips.
You're right, money grows on trees so buy everything.
You need a grain vacuum. Great videos
Love it!
Hello Ryan, got my sweet shirt yesterday, thanks. Was wondering on the corn sweep, could you attach a broom on there to get just about all the corn as it moving? I've always said work smarter not harder, just a idea.
Hey ryan just a word of advice always make sure to check if your truck is in neutral before starting, might be in neutral 1000 times but it only takes one time that it’s not to get someone hurt
good video Ryan
Can you do a video explaining what the grain is used for after you drop it off.
And I get the river is too high right now, but at what stage do they open it?
You left one kernal behind😂🌽 great videos!!!!
Actually a grain vac, though as it may be quicker it is a added cost that may only get used twice a year. Carry on your doing just fine.
Yeah don't listen to those people telling you to clean up behind the sweep. It really isn't that much faster. It saves you the time it takes for the sweep to make one or two extra rounds, probably 5 minutes. In return however, you are doing a lot less manual work and putting much less stress on your body. Definitely keep doing it the way you are regardless of what others say; it's the smart way.
What are those two switches above the red trailer brake knob? That is usually where the jake brake buttons are on ones with a Jake.
Instead of sweeping would a leaf blower work or woukd that create to much dust?
That is the part of hauling grain I hated when I worked on the farm
Loved the driving part but hated cleaning out the bins
Have you ever tried plastic snow shovels for bin clean ups
What are the things hanging down in the first bin you were in?
Kool video
Good video men
R.I.P. .. 7$ Corn and 17.50$ Beans
I miss those days.
What happened to soybean prices?
You're smart to not be in the bin with the sweep running. I know a guy who's missing half of his calf muscle because he was by himself in the bin with the sweep. The only time saver I can see for you is to clean away from the edge when you're in between loads. Fun video as always.
No inside ladder on the Sioux bin? Great video btw.
Do you all store corn in the same bins? If so, how do you keep it all straight?
Smarter not harder.
Good video. Hope the Soybean prices some up
very good job and very interesting information carry on form Tariq Muhammad from Pakistan
Ryan,
About how much $ does what you are sweeping amount to? (If I may ask.)
Please use this song more! Great vid!
Hey Ryan, how well do you like your roll n lock bed cover on your pickup truck?
Wow, to me it looked like you only had 3/4 of a truck load in there, small trailer capacity or corn in a bin just looks smaller than it is :O
Oh Ryan invest in a impact driver for you gates it's wrks great
Hey Ryan did you ever find out anything about running the tarp empty?
How far is the run to the granary? (I think you said Dubuque.) At what point does the time and expense of the run outweigh the remnants in the back of the truck?
should try a garden blower to just blow the corn to the middle.
How long of a trip is it to your unloading destination.
I like the dancing fuel gauge
I wondered how you got all the footage! There's 4 of you! LOL
Any clue what big red has saved you so far in delivery fees on the corn? I know you won't see any return anytime soon due to the purchase but just curious.
Lol hell with shoveling do like we use a heavy dut leaf blower lol
You'll want an automatically retractable tarp. About blew out my shoulder trying to roll ours after a bit of ice.
i love my grain vac ;-)
Do you clean under the floor periodically?
Will a backpack leaf blow work instead of sweeping is? I have no idea. I have used backpack blowers for many different uses
I was wondering the same thing, but the amount of dust that gets kicked up my not be worth it.
Gas fumes in a confined space is not safe
@@jessewerner5784 they have electric & even plug in one's.
When your where driving over the leg to dump the back hopper, my Instink came in and I almost yelled woe!😂
How many miles have you put on Big Red?
U should do some planting in 360 if u still have the camera
