Siphon song blew me away, very immersive song and so well produced. The vocoder fits in perfectly into it and i cant imagine it any different. My favourite song on the album

Vibes and influences from Primus, The Residents, early Pixies, early Modest Mouse, and Television?! Well now I'm certainly going to have to give this album a listen.
Not to be overly reductionist but if you listen to what Radiohead put out from the early 90s to the early 00s you’ll hear quite a bit of similarities to this album. Two tracks in particular come to mind, The Trickster and The National Anthem. Making these kinds of records fell out of style in the late 00s as I think everyone was burned out from the Radiohead sound. But god damn if I’m not happy to hear a band attempt to bring it back. This album is so good.
@@nathantaaron I honestly don't really quite get the Radiohead comparisons that people have been making? I guess some of the progressions and instrumentation are a bit similar, but Radiohead usually doesn't go this punk-y or krautrock-y
feel like the least surprising thing about this group and what they do is the fact warp signed them, makes way too much sense when you hear their stuff tbh also fun fact: their lead signer is also their drummer
When I heard Devils Den for the first time it reminded me of the first time I heard “They’re Coming To Take Me Away Haha” as a kid. The combination of the vocals and instrumentation went maniacal. And by the end of After the flash it was like the took the end of hello skinny and thrashed overtop of it. Wild experience.
Nice! O Monolith for sure feels liks a more cohesive and better flowing album than Bright Green Field which for me had incredible highs but left me colder as a whole. Interesting to see you not vibe with Siphon Song which too me has been an obvious stand out so far. Really dig the vocoder and the sort of spaciousness it bring along with mixing up the overall tones of the vocals on the album (also love the background vocals). That along with its structure and how it leads into the groove of Undergrowth is ace.
I really like this album but I feel Squid's last had more weird stuff on it to make it a little more memorable, and more replayable to me, personally. I also felt the ending of the album could use a little more oomph.

I LOVED Bright Green Field, but this is a completely different animal. Chilling, unsettling sounds with solid writing and an acknowledgement of their contemporaries (i hear black midi and Black Country, New Road all over this). One of my favorites of the year. Also, cannot wait to see these guys live
I feel like the singles spoiled too much of this album. There's still plenty of awesome new moments on it, but I would've preferred to come into most of it blind
Exactly - this is the very reason why I never check out the singles. I prefer going in blind. Hearing anything off an album before hearing the whole thing can make if sound disjointed as well

Honestly didnt care that much about their first LP, it was good just didnt really grab me, ive been vibing with this one a lot more. I still think Squid can do better, maybe if they stop listening to so much Radiohead and started listening to more Mission of Burma or something they could achieve something truly special.
Still not great compared to last year. By this point, we already had BC,NR, Kendrick, Big Thief, Denzel, JPEG, billy woods, Soul Glo, Conway, Beach House etc

I prefer the previous album, this does have some great moments though. I hope Ollie ages into having a little more heart in his vocals on future albums.

Love you fantano but also love when I disagree. i think Siphon song is a top 3 on the album, and compliments it completely. Much alike bm’s Hellfire, these otherworldly concept post-punk albums needs those midpoint gorgeous ballads to help you sink back into the universe the band intends to take you in. I think Siphon Song does this perfectly.

They've all been 8s though. Compare this point of the year to 2022 or 2021 and the difference is noticeable.

Siphon song was one of my favourites! The song is so brooding and the lyrics are so mysterious it feels like an alien abduction.
The backing vocals add so much too. Love it
Lyrically it really stands out to the rest of the album. Really intricate story telling, I loved it too.

While listening to this album, it reminded me of Television, which is amazing because Television is one of my favorite bands ever
