I did intermittent fasting for years and didn't even know it, that's probably why I stayed so lean all my life. Started doing it again about a year ago.
Did the same thing for years just because I didn't have time to eat in the morning and didn't want to go outside and didn't have enough time at lunch, either.
damn you guys bringing up HS. i did the exact opposite. i ate only during HS. nutrition and lunch and pretty much didn't eat until the next day at school.
Diana M that’s not intermittent fasting.you were probably skinny not lean.lean is slim with muscle tone.if you didn’t eat for all those hours you will have muscle wastage hence looking skinny. It’s not healthy
I’m fasting 23.5 hours a day, eating the other .5. Keto foods only. I’m haven’t lost any muscle, but probably 20 lbs of fat. My workouts are great! 5 miles of cardio daily with weight training immediately after. Love it! P.S. I’m a 50 year old firefighter.
Absolutely, I was a bit sceptic about Intermittent Fasting first, but since March (Covid lockdown), I have been doing the 16/8 and seen great results (been hitting running PBs, getting back to long distance running). A staple part of my diet over past couple of years has been drinking Yerba Mate tea - and this really helps keeping off the hunger, as well as being great for metabolism. When you do eat, I imagine the foods we intake during the 'eating window' will be absorbed by the body more so, so it encourages me to eat better foods. I usually have my breakfast foods as my 12pm lunch.
@@thecouplechallenge7110 hey, no worries! I might have a coffee once in a blue moon just for taste, or with an occasion desert, but not really as a ‘pick me up’, I think to be drinking Yerba Mate and coffee daily might be a bit of a caffeine overload. Yerba Mate comes from South America (mainly Argentina/Paraguay/Uruguay/Brazil), it comes in loose leaves, so you will need a bombilla (filtered straw) to drink it. A lot of professional footballers from there swear by it, inc Messi, Suarez and Co! You can hopefully find it pretty easy online from wherever you are! :)
I can confirm everything Rollins has said here. I work from home full time and get sucked into "the zone" on a daily basis. I never eat breakfast and by the time I'm ready to step away from my home office for some lunch, it's already around 3PM. In fact, I'm not even cognizant of the fact I haven't had lunch due to feeling hungry, it's simply just a "oh wait, I haven't eaten today". It has put me into this state of mind where I'm now totally fine with waiting until dinner and eating whatever I want. Interestingly enough, when it does come time to eat that first meal of the day, which is dinner, my brain tells me that I need to eat an entire buffet and then halfway through a plate of food, I feel very full. Overall, I eat MUCH less, it's really strange.
Your stomach adapts to how much food you eat. I did the same thing when I graduated high school and started working. It was much easier for me to skip breakfast and eat light lunches if no lunches at all. I'd come home hungry as fuck thinking I needed ten plates of food when a half of a plate would fill me up because my stomach shrank.
Yeah,I was prescribed adderall & it made me feel the exact same way,I would forget to eat or when the last time was but it was kinda disconcerting to not eat all day AND not notice. I figured it had to be terrible for me since I didn't see myself as overweight to begin with, but doc watched it & said it usually fades. Maybe It all leveled out because it dimmed the urge to auto-eat so many meals conditioned into us?I only eat like twice a day now & hold a healthier weight even long after abandoning the script, but sadly without it I may have never realised the excess I ate & carried around. My brother is about the same age & avg size, but with his continued poor eating he now has to deal with full blown diabetes at 36. Not recommending using drugs for a quick diet at all, that just brought it to my attention.Having two people with some fame taking the time to make some useful points & offer tips that help them and may help others is what really gets the needed attention.
I had a colonoscopy a few weeks back, and part of the prep, after having no fiber for a week before, the 24 hrs before is a strictly clear fluid diet... I don't believe I've ever gone a day without some sort of food. I was really concerned I'd end up completely hangry and twitchy. I was shocked to discover that my boby had zero problem. It was actually no big deal... but then I was really psyching myself up about it all. Funny, often times it never turns out as bad as we make it out to be in our minds. I ended up feel really good, and lighter. The intermittent fasting thing now intrigues me.
MADGUNS FOREVER™ totally! I traveled to China regularly and I would carry peanut butter and almonds in my backpack just in case the meal I was offered did not “look right” 😂
I think I will listen to some rollins black flag. Maybe find cool girl that plays bass maybe start a band . Maybe tour a few years. maybe settle down in a posh penthouse over looking the water. Maybe sell some art. Maybe rent a cabin in the mountains for Christmas. Maybe I'll just listen to some Henry's Black Flag.
Also been doing the 16/8 intermittent fasting.. Get up at 5 am each day , hit the gym and don’t have my first meal until 11 am.. Your body is an amazing machine that can adopt to anything as long as you take the time to train it .. Intermittent fasting has amazing benefits ..
Nik M Good for you ..! There is nothing better than watching the sun come up and having the bizarre sense of accomplishment of telling myself I beat the sun again today : )
Nik M The reason why I started getting up early is because I am much more productive between 05 : 30 am till 08 : 30 am versus 08 : 30 pm till 11 : 30 pm ... Also , it’s a great habit ..
I do 22/2 intermittent fasting, meaning I have a 2 hour eating window each day, which, due to my work schedule is generally from 8 to 10pm. So basically I skip the morning and noon meals, and eat a big dinner in the evening. It's not hard at all once you get used to it.
Jaws 75 yes.... the only thing i mess up sometimes is a snack after the eating period ends. If that happens like it did last night. I extend the 16 hour period. For example, instead of having my first meal today at 12 noon I will waiting until 2:30
Jaws 75 yeah i do great during the day but night comes and i crave something sweet or peanut butter. Ill keep low / no sugar protein bars around and unsweetened almond milk. If my will power gets to weak I have a little of each. Like last night. 😂 So now I cant eat till 2:30. So im off to the gym!
I mean he is older and probably isn't working out as hard as he use to, I'm sure his metabolism is slower. And your priorities change when you are younger you want to be the biggest baddest man ever when you are older being thinner is just easier and feels better.
Good point. And I think Henry definitely talks from a perspective of a guy who used to work out a lot and you just need calories for that. If you can pack the amount of calories you need to grow in two meals without bloating, then more powet to ya, but it won't be realistic or convenient for most. And there's this whole social aspect to food and eating, that I don't even wanna get into...
I'm a huge believer in the connection between physical health, through riortous workouts, and mental health, Henry's love of weight lifting and working out comes from a very pure place.
2 years ago I started fasting 12/12. The first week was the hardest because the body was not used to skipping that much food, but it helped me a lot, I lost 50kg in 9 months with regular exercise (4 times a week, cycling ). Now two years later I'm still doing it,
@@MrWarhead16 Hello there, i have started a 16/8 fasting since Nov 2021 and it helped me to maintain my weight. My recommendation is to listen to the Huberman Podcast, he has a full episode explaining the pros and cons of fasting.
I fast between 2pm to 10pm your body really does adapt, I don’t even feel hungry until around 2 and I wake up more energised. Human body shouldn’t be digesting 24/7 and it makes you feel like shit...
Very good choice of picking and choosing what to eat. PSA: If you can, try to buy American brands of bottled water when traveling. If you see PepsiCo or Coca-Cola brand, buy that brand of water. The restrictions when bottling are very strict and it is going to be clean.
Traveled to Volgograd,Russia a few years ago and the sodas tasted 'off'. It was the sugar.None of the cheap high-fructose corn syrup in any of them, really, I searched around over the few weeks cuz I was used to the taste & drank many a can back then. It surprised me that we load up our citizens in the US with that stuff & Russia seems to avoid it,AND many offices have a mandatory exercise break there. The girl I was there seeing had commented on the number of overweight people she saw here & I began to notice this as well after her observation & seeing the avg crowds over there compared to here.We have issues.
I often eat only twice a day, and at some meals eat only protein, or only vegetables, for example. *This really is like clean energy mode,* versus stuffing back a whole variety of food every few hours. Starchy carbs, processed foods, really spicy or fried foods, desserts and snack foods, I don't crave any of those things because I stopped caring about them so they don't t really call out to me. Bonus info: *hold off on eating at strange times while you fly overseas, and then wait to eat the next morning after sleep* - this resets your circadian rhythm so you can *recover from jet lag.* You really don't need any food on the flight after dinner in your departure time zone. This assumes good self-care, rest, hydration and diet in days leading up to travel.
I weighed 63 kg at 185 cm for the past 10 years or so and now at 29 I finally reached 78 kg through forcing myself to eat more since January 2021, so after watching this I feel confused, was this video mostly for those who struggle to lose weight rather than gain it? Because if not, then by this video's logic I shouldn't have forced myself to eat more and should have remained a skinny 63 kg dude :D
I started intermittent fasting when I turned 29. I did two straight days out of the week of 600 calories each day. Waist line shrunk. Skin started looking better, energy was through the roof. My blood pressure went from 143/90 to 125/73. Our bodies run more efficiently on a routine of stress, rest, adapt, repeat.

Jello: (feverishly stares at hands 🖐 🤚 while making weird spurious gestures)
I live in Texas.. and I tell you this.. everywhere.. I mean everywhere I go, I see unhealthy obese people. And I don't say that in a mean way. I just observe it. Educating our youth with these types of diets would be so beneficial. Because, it's too late for a lot of these people that will never adapt to these types of methods.
maui swift Oh I know! It's ridiculous. It's horrific. I've traveled to many different countries. Reading about it and seeing it is two different things. The average American seemingly doesn't realize the damage they are doing to their body. The more I wonder about it, the more I think it's of design to keep the masses fat and docile.
Lost weight on an overseas business trip (18 lbs) mostly because of dietary restrictions & concerns. A nibble for breakfast & lunch, and a meal @ night. JUST like Henry said, the western 3 meals/day started putting weight back on. Now 2 meal replacement shakes/day & dinner. I also have slower digestion so it helps. Henry said that too.
Totally agree 110% i think that if your body is in constant digestion u must use more energy and that must be where the afternoon drowsiness just my personal opinion
You mean a small amount often or a little once? We need research on the topic. Everything else is just guessing or bro-science. As a guess, I'd say better to not munch all day. Let your system clear before next feed. But, again, not a research scientist. Problem with humans is we are all the same at a base level, but an infinite number of variables from the moment of conception make us unique. So anyone that claims to have a "best way" for everyone can be written off as full of shit. :)
Street Wise Hercules If you eat whenever you feel like it you’ll end up obese, pretty simple. There are a looot of times where I’ll feel like eating or snacking on something good when I shouldn’t be eating, good thing I have a modicum of self-restraint or I would have been a (more than normal) fat guy for sure.
I found this little documentary on the Levi’s 501 Jean. Henry Rollins was talking about the clothes he was wearing and how he would destroyed jeans. It was just really compelling to watch him. A likeable, powerful artist!
I am not saying that this philosophy is wrong, but as a distance runner I could not do intermittent fasting. I have very little body fat, and I regularly deplete the glycogen in my muscles. The body is like a machine in some ways, and if I don’t provide that machine fuel, I will not be able to run those miles. But I understand that this is not the lifestyle most people live.
@@jjohnsengraciesmom you got it. One meal a day for 2 weeks and you'll never look back. Life gets better after that as long as you have the discipline to keep it going
I’ve been eating healthy for years now. My friends would make fun of me over it, but now that we are in our 40s, my friends have all kinds of health problems related to lifestyle and poor diet. They also look old. I look slim and young and i feel like i’m still in my 20s
I've noticed when touring in Europe it's mainly snacking through the day then one main meal. Usually dinner. I wonder if that's from what they've inherited from many years.
It works! I eat once a day, what ever I want, your body gets use to it. No soda. Water and the occasional 🍺. I use to be a fat ass now I'm lean 64 and feel great
I'm 87 hours into a fast and I feel really good at the moment. It's a cool feeling. I think everybody should try not stuffing their face multiple times a day.
@hobbit lad yo You're misinformed or uneducated, 5 to 6 week fasts (under medical supervision) are curing all kinds of syndromes and diseases - I fast for 30 hours once a week at least, my bloods are perfect, I feel 25 years younger and very happy. Keto for life.... Dickhead !
Buy a scale that measures body fat loss and lean muscle mass loss. I did and realized that I lost a lot of muscle doing a 6 day fast. I won’t do it again. I’m no expert and I have no clue what to do but the long fast was a mistake.
Fasting feels good because it draws on kidney adrenals. We need energy (especially brains) but intestines need rest. Hmm..The key is to eat simply and in season most of the time. Autumn/Spring are perfect months for fasting.
_intermittent fasting is best done during both of the quarter moon phases, because of the moons effect on our bodies, we naturally do not feel as hungry during that time. Try it out_
I think it's a matter of schedule and lifestyle. If you work 9 to 5 there's no way you can skip meals because the "3 meal convention" ends up being the better alternative because of the time of your breaks
The consequences of ingesting X amount of calories once a day, versus the consequences of ingesting the same amount of calories spread between three meals, are totally independent from schedule and lifestyle. We are not built to eat all day every day -even if our schedules seem to demand it. We are built to eat, burn fat, and then eat again. If we are constantly eating, we never allow our bodies to enter the fasted metabolic stage, where fat can be burn for fuel. To never allow your body to fast has negative consequences, and this is true regardless of your job, schedule or lifestyle.
@@jabibgalt5551 I get what you're saying...but take me for example. I'm a skinny guy with 6% body fat. There's no way in hell I can ingest all the calories I need in a day in one meal, especially if I'm working out. I can barely do it with several meals a day, it just wouldn't fit my stomach lol
@@luizspindola Fair enough. If I may ask you, I'm curious of your thoughts: 1) How many calories do you consider you need in a day? How did you arrive at that number? 2) What if eating multiple times a day (even when that allows you to ingest more calories) was counter-productive for gaining weight? 3) What if the weight you are gaining today by eating multiple times a day to ingest X amount of calories, will cost your body's health in the future?
to people saying they miss eating breakfast, just eat breakfast for lunch or dinner. problem solved. I just have fruit, cereal, toast and eggs at night.

Excellent! Your comment makes me want to learn more about a ketogenic diet. (Not for weight loss, but for other reasons.)
I did intermittent fasting for years and didn't even know it, that's probably why I stayed so lean all my life. Started doing it again about a year ago.
Did the same thing for years just because I didn't have time to eat in the morning and didn't want to go outside and didn't have enough time at lunch, either.
Same here.. in high school, I didn't eat until about 3 or 4 p.m. was lean.
damn you guys bringing up HS. i did the exact opposite. i ate only during HS. nutrition and lunch and pretty much didn't eat until the next day at school.
Quietude that’s not intermittent that’s starving yourself hence why you ate so much junk when you got home
Diana M that’s not intermittent fasting.you were probably skinny not lean.lean is slim with muscle tone.if you didn’t eat for all those hours you will have muscle wastage hence looking skinny. It’s not healthy
He was such a good actor in SOA it's so hard to get over the character he played 😂
Also: this is so so true!
the almonds and water diet sounds a lot easier to digest than burritos and chicken ranch sandwiches.
Half a peanut and an after dinner mint.🤣
@@TheJeffro451 Haha!
. 5 h is too little. Makes no difference if you fast 23,5 or 24h just do 24 :1 or 20:1 same effect, don't go too strict.
I’ve never heard of Yerba mate tea! Thanks for the tip, we’ll look into it! Do you still drink coffee?
This dude is truly fascinating

It’s great for losing weight but makes things a little difficult if your trying to bulk up. Mainly because I really don’t feel like eating as much lol
“Well that’s like your opinion dude...” 😬
I'm a huge believer in the connection between physical health, through riortous workouts, and mental health, Henry's love of weight lifting and working out comes from a very pure place.
2 years ago I started fasting 12/12. The first week was the hardest because the body was not used to skipping that much food, but it helped me a lot, I lost 50kg in 9 months with regular exercise (4 times a week, cycling ). Now two years later I'm still doing it,

I eat 16:8 and do OMAD 2 x a week. My sugar cravings are gone, sleep better, insulin resistance gone, lost over 15lbs too.
Yo Gary! Doing keto or regular eating during if and omad?

Lost weight on an overseas business trip (18 lbs) mostly because of dietary restrictions & concerns. A nibble for breakfast & lunch, and a meal @ night. Do u think eating very little all day is ok?
You mean a small amount often or a little once? We need research on the topic. Everything else is just guessing or bro-science. As a guess, I'd say better to not munch all day. Let your system clear before next feed. But, again, not a research scientist. Problem with humans is we are all the same at a base level, but an infinite number of variables from the moment of conception make us unique. So anyone that claims to have a "best way" for everyone can be written off as full of shit. :)

@hobbit lad yo You sound like a joy to be around. You obviously have no knowledge about the benefits of extended fasting.
Dickhead !

_intermittent fasting is best done during both of the quarter moon phases, because of the moons effect on our bodies, we naturally do not feel as hungry during that time. Try it out_
Henry "not that guy" Rollins
If I may ask you, I'm curious of your thoughts:
1) How many calories do you consider you need in a day? How did you arrive at that number?
2) What if eating multiple times a day (even when that allows you to ingest more calories) was counter-productive for gaining weight?
3) What if the weight you are gaining today by eating multiple times a day to ingest X amount of calories, will cost your body's health in the future?
That's why cows have 5 stomachs....non stop grazing, we have 1 so makes sense to let the stomach empty.
