    No doubt, SMS RGB nearly knocked me on my ass the first time I saw it. I was slowly backing away from the CRT and tripped.

    The Master System was my first games console in the mid 1980s when I was in Junior High. Hang On, Wonder Boy, Thunder Blade, Outrun, Alex Kidd, Golden Axe etc. Absolutely loved it. The 1980s were magical times for kids following entertainment across the board.

    SMS is an amazing console and the first console to output RGB natively when everyone else was just offering RF or Composite. It's also backwards compatible with SG-1000 games if you put Roms on a Master EverDrive flash cart and play it on a Master System; not on a Genesis with Power Base Converter unfortunately. Great episode, I'm looking forward for more!

    Great episode guys, as usual. Here in Brazil, the Master System 1 was identical to the US version, except for the A/V Out that was not present; there is RF of course and a direct composite (1 video and 1 audio RCA outputs) was added on the back by Tec Toy (SEGA oficial retailer here in Brazil).
    I play/capture only via Power Base on the Mega Drive using RGB and I was very pleased to know that it's a little brighter and saturated, thanks for sharing that comparison Coury! Please keep doing this series, its awesome to see you guys showing true love for outputting the best image on our real consoles. Cheers from Brazil!

    The Master System DID include the composite cables in the box. At least they did at one point, like when I got mine for Christmas in the 80's. I no longer have that SMS, but I still have the cable. Sold the SMS after I got a Power Base converter, but still needed the cable for my model 1 Genny.

    • @stuffums

      I think it's why in EU the mega drive was more popular than NES even if it had fewer classics, the NES just output garbage RF or composite even with the French RGB adaptor but Sega put in proper SCART hardware

    • @Koexistence13
      @Koexistence13 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The 8 pin din or oversize looking s video port on the back supports ?Scart? I googled and it looks like a pc monitor output. How can I convert that out put to plug into my LG flat screen?

    • @Longlius
      @Longlius 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It should be emphasized that not all scart TVs supported RGB, and it wasn't until the late 90s that the TVs that did came down enough in price to be something that the average consumer could buy. The scart connector was envisioned as an all-in-one format for carrying a video signal, so scart connections can carry anything from an RF signal to component and RGB. It just depends on what your TV supports.
      There's a weird tendency in the retro community to overromanticize SCART. While it was a better, more coherent standard than what we got in the US, you shouldn't imagine Europeans playing their Mega Drives with full RGB in 1993 or what have you (unless they were wealthy enough to afford a TV that could display RGB video).

    • @justanotheryoutubechannel
      @justanotheryoutubechannel 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Matthew Longley Most, if not all, TVs with SCART input can support RGB. But not all SCART sockets can take RGB. Most can, but not all. However, most Europeans used RF. Although we could’ve been using beautiful RGB, we stuck with the worst of the worst, as most people didn’t know any better.

  • @FinalBaton

    It's amazing how ahead of their time Sega consoles were regarding the quality of video signals you could tap in right out of the box. The fact that the Master System ouputs RGB natively is crazy.
    Nintendo, on the other hand, has always been screwing customers in that regard.
    The NES didn't offer anything better than composite (at the time, offering composite was actually good : but look at what the Master System could offer). For the SNES, some of the revisons offer a blurry RGB picture, and all of them have vertical bars in the middle of the screen when stock (the Genesis, on the other hand, offers crystal-clear RGB). The N64 have a very nasty Anti-Aliasing filter that blurs the picture (meanwhile, the Saturn offers clear RGB, as is always the case with Sega consoles).
    Thankfully now there are nice solutions for nintendo consoles (i almost cried of joy the first time I played on my RGB modded Nes lol), but they still require work and money to be invested in them, while Sega consoles offer crystal-clear RGB natively on all their consoles, and you have to appreciate that.

    • @badreality2
      @badreality2 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, but remember, the RGBs that comes out of Sega systems are unattenuated, so you need to buy the correct SCART or JP21 converter cables with capacitors and resistors in them, to compensate for this. The U.S., at least. For RGB regions (PAL, Japan), this is NOT a worry.

    Honestly, one of my favorite video series to come along on youtube. Excellent job as always, guys. Quick question, I see that you guys have a Toshiba CRT in the background. In your opinion, do you recommend it's tube over some other consumer grade crt televisions, such as sony? Also, what did you use to get an rgb signal to that television?

    • @mylifeingaming
      @mylifeingaming  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      megamanfan1500 [Coury] Only since moving in December have I had room to hook up a CRT to play on (and shoot video off of) have I really gotten back into it. I didn't know what to get for a long time, but was pointed in the the direction of the Toshiba by Game Sack and I just adore the thing.
      The model I have is a 27AF44 and I got it at good will for 12 dollars. It has Composite, S-Video and Component in on it. . It has big beautiful scanlines and is a flatscreen.
      In terms of getting the signal to the TV, all the SMS stuff in this episode that was shot off screen was via the Master System's composite. Though I do have a SCART to Component converter on the way to use in the future with it.

    I remember how everyone is like "The Master System comes with built-in game(s)!" and then when I bought mine from a Pawn shop a few years back, I turned mine on and.... nothing, no game built in. Just instructions on how to insert and play a cartridge. Turns out, the very first run of Master Systems came with a physical cartridge packed in, and not a game built in.

    What you did is very nice and useful, but you might want to check twice the technical details if you want to mention them. For instance, the the box on the RF cable is not the RF modulator, it is just a switch between the game and TV the antenna. The modulator is inside the console.
    Also composite cannot be modulated into S-video, modulation means modifying a carrier signal amplitude/frequency/phase (usually RF) according to the useful signal (video/audio).

      @mylifeingaming  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joshua Rastia [Try4ce] Definitely looking forward to doing the N64 200-level video. It's one of my favorite consoles, because that was the generation when I really started to follow upcoming games and anticipate their release. But I will say, don't expect miracles when it comes to the N64. Unlike PS1, N64 games tend to have a softer image due to anti-aliasing, which is a great effect for consoles that run in 480i and higher, but turns out to not be such a great thing for 240p. RGB modding the N64 does improve the colors and the textures feel like they have a bit more contrast and definition, but it's hardly the revelatory experience that RGB is with say, NES or Genesis.

  • @RedArremer
    @RedArremer 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very nice! I've got both the original Master System (3D Glasses set), and the Power Base Converter. Right now, the Power Base Converter works so well that I kind of really don't see the need to even keep the Master Sytem around. That being said, I did run into an issue with the Genesis when I bought a JP-21 RGB cable for it, and that was very ugly 'jail bars'. I did some Googling and learned that these first models of the Genesis are known to have this issue because of the poor design of the video encoding process. Thankfully the fix was fairly simple, involving breaking one of the trace lines on the circuit board of the Genesis. The results were amazing. The jail bars were completely removed, and the picture looked flawless. The drawback is doing this mod removes all other video output from the Genesis, so you either have to live with only RGB (oh the humanity), or rig a toggle switch on the line in the circuit board to be able to turn composite video sources back on.

    In case someone might need to use an RF modulator on a system but cannot find one, here's a great tip: You can use a standard RCA cable (the same used for composite/component) and plug it into the RF port on the console. Then, you can hook it directly to the coax input on the TV with a dirt cheap adapter (coax on one side, RCA plug on the other). Generally the adapter is called a RCA Female to F Male.

    This is a very US-centric video. The Master System was also available in Europe and Australia/New Zealand, but we don't use F-connectors for our terrestrial television here in NZ, so there is no "screwing in". It's a larger connector, similar fit to an RCA connector.

    Great video. I loved the 100 series videos, can't want to see all of the console specific 200 series videos. :)
    Quick Question: When showing the comparison between composite and RGB in this video is the composite signal being processed by the Framemeister and then sent to your VCC, or is the composite signal running directly to the VCC?

    • @mylifeingaming
      @mylifeingaming  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Develitate [Coury] When the composite signal is being processed by the Framemeister we'll specifically say it, like I do before the A/B of Composite vs RGB. It just comes down to the ease of being able to accurately capture a composite signal. Its tougher these days to find a capture card worth anything that will capture from a composite line in.
      While the Framemeister offers a definite jump even with composite, the difference between it and RGB is still night and day.

    I remember the days when RF would have been thought of as pretty decent... I don't remember it looking as sucky as it does. I have both a model one Master System with Snail built in and a composite modded SMS2 with a region speed switch... we really got stiffed in the UK when it came to the speed games played. Sometimes playing games on US systems or emulated, I feel really quite thrown off by the increase in speed making some games unplayable (without a ton of practice anyway).
    Cracking video as always. Really looking forward to the blog post with the timeline screenshot... those assets at the start :D

    • @mylifeingaming
      @mylifeingaming  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sk4zZi0uS [Coury] Y'know, I remember it looking alot better too. But I think the CRT itself makes it look a lot better. Getting a capture of an RF output was not easy. I was lucky that my CRT has a composite out, so i had to run that into a DVD recorder which would then spt that out as component into my capture card.

    This is an excellent idea. After having my framemeister for about a week (still learning) this couldn't have come a better time. Only request is if there are any specific settings or image modes you suggest on the XRGB that are console specific.

    • @mylifeingaming
      @mylifeingaming  9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Mitchell Bowling [Coury] Congrats on the Framemeister! Our next episode is specifically on all the different options of the Framemeister. Stuff like image processing modes, scaling modes will all be broken down.
      But in the man time, for me personally, I like the "NORMAL2" scaling mode and for image processing, for all progressive sources you should use the "PICTURE" setting.

    • @RedArremer
      @RedArremer 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is an incredible amount of research still on-going about all the options and quirks of the Framemeister. It's taken me the better part of a month to master the Framemeister's features just for 240p console gaming alone. While it is an amazing little device, it does have some flaws and limitations. For example, if you want the cleanest and sharpest looking picture, you'll want to use 1080p output if you have a 1080p display. Unfortunately, the Framemeister uses a very lazy scanline overlay system, and they look just awful at 1080p. Most people just settle for the loss of sharpness and output at 720p so they can have more tolerable scanlines. Also 1080p is such that most console images don't scale properly without either leaving a border, or have oddly shaped pixels on the vertical axis (causes scrolling artifacts in the up & down direction). I've worked out my own solutions to 1080p output, but it would take several pages to explain here. I'm thinking about making a page on my web site dedicated to all my findings about how the Framemeister works and behaves for 240p gaming.

    I had no clue you could use an S-video cable on the Master System. IMO the Sega Master System outclassed the NES in graphics in a certain way. Maybe that's just my opinion,m but what shocks me most of all is how all video game manufacturers failed to offer stereo sound until the late 1980s. Wonder why??? I ;learned a lot thanks to your channel. Much appreciated.

    • @mylifeingaming

    Any chance of going to consoles prior to this generation? I think someone just developed a true RGB mod for the 2600. If any pre-SMS/NES system is worth it, it would be that one. Also, some early computers might be worth discussing (Apple II for sure).

    actually, the signal coming out of the RF port on the system is already modulated, the device you stick in between the TV and console just prevents the game's video signal from interfering with the connected cable TV or antenna and leading to a not so pleasant visit from your cable company or the FCC =P

    Two questions:
    1.) Regarding best possible picture console, I don't really get it: Did I get something wrong, I think you mention on one hand the Mega Drive with Power Base converter delivers best picture quality, but on the other hand in the summary you state the Master System I delivers the best experience visually?
    2.) Is the Mega Drive with Power Base converter also superior to a RGB modded Master System II? I have the latter and so far I'm very satisfied with its picture quality.

    I have a question unrelated to the excelent video here:
    is it possible that you'll making a video about the "PS2-Backwards-Compatibility"-mod for PS3? I remember that someone sold a small board that should make it backwards compatible again and better than every Sony solution at the start of the console. But it could be possible Sony already locked this mod completely out years ago. I really don't know, but it would be interesting to see how good or bad it worked and how video quality turned out.
