In regard to the Nintendo 3DS NES Virtual Console games' palettes: a friend of mine who has the Ambassador thing lent me his 3DS - which had Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, among other NES games.
I played a Zelda II for a bit, but I couldn't put my finger on why the colors seemed "off" to me. And then I realized why: on the 3DS, the NES Virtual Console games use a palette that looks identical (or ALMOST identical) to the one used by the popular "FCE Ultra" NES emulator.
I (and my friend) live in an NTSC region, though - and FCE Ultra uses a palette that matches the output of a NES in the PAL region, which… in some cases, looks very ugly: take, for example, the battlefield when two pieces are fighting in Battle Chess.
It uses the color $08* for the screen's main background color, and $18 for the circle in which the two pieces are fighting - the darkest two "Yellow" colors on the NES's palette. On a CRT television in the NTSC region, these colors show up not as a dark yellow, but instead as a dark yellow-y green.
But in the PAL region, $08 and $18 are a brownish-gold color instead, which makes the imagined grass look completely dead instead. :(
I actually made a big screenshots gallery that shows off the different palettes of various emulators, going all the way back to one of the first - and one of the most popular - NES emulators of all time, NESticle, and I found it fascinating to compare all of the palettes side-by-side and see how the variance in colors affected various NES games.
In case anyone was curious to see almost a dozen NES palettes applied to various NES games, my gallery is here:
    procyon.com/~kizul/nes_files/screenshot_gallery/
Aside from the palette I made, the only REALLY GOOD palettes for NTSC NES colors would probably be the ones made by FirebrandX (in particular, his "Composite Direct (FBX)" palette):
    www.firebrandx.com/nespalette.html
And now that I've finished dumping more info than many of you ever wanted to know: I'll end this comment with a footnote that explains even more stuff. :D
*$xx is the Hexadecimal number for a color index in the NES's master palette, which is frequently displayed as a a table of 64 cells arranged in a 16×4 grid.
The left digit in the index number corresponds to the "row" the requested color is in. The selected row determines how bright the color is, with 0 being the darkest and 3 being the brightest.
The right digit corresponds to the "column" that the requested color is in. The first (column 0) is "White". The next twelve columns (numbered 1 to C in hexadecimal) are colors starting with Blue and ending with a Cyan or Turquoise color. Column D is "Black", and includes a specific black - $0D - that's actually darker than the rest of the black entries in the palette, so dark in fact that it has a tendency to mess up how a game displays on some TVs. The last two Columns (E and F) are the same color of black as $1D, which is sort of an "off-black" - not PURE black as nearly all existing NES master palettes show it to be.

I've found that with the switch joy-cons, I prefer X-A because when I use Y-B on the arcade version of SM, my thump keeps hitting the joystick, due to how close it is to the buttons. But they should add the option to map it however you want.

Your channel could be a victim of geeking out to much over retro games and video output settings, however there’s just so much polish and thoughtful consideration to your videos that the viewer is drawn in, and left with such an addictive balance of entertaining + education content, that time seems to stand still while watching your vids. Input lag that phenomenon!
Thanks once again for your class leading content and for taking the time to deliver all the nitty gritty the details on our beloved retro games!

1 - Buy NES Classic Mini as cheap as possible
2 - Mod it with Hakchi, add all the games you want
3 - Install Retroarch with Nestopia for accurate emulation, and turn on latency mitigation options, low audio lag settings
4 - Enjoy the best possible cost-benefit experience for NES games with original Nintendo hardware and controllers, pure digital image quality, lower latency than real hardware and accurate emulation, plus a myriad of video shaders, filters and settings which can eliminate shimmering.

  • @mr.s5668

[Try4ce] I was wondering about that too, but I haven't looked into it. I never got my Joy-cons fixed by Nintendo, but I haven't played in a situation lately where I would likely experience drops like I used to.

I'm glad to finally hear an explanation for the weird flashing effects on the NES classic. I thought there was something wrong with my TV, as I haven't seen anyone else even mention it before.

  • @ABlob
    @ABlob 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Something that wasn't made that big of a deal but the seizure prevention blur actually makes me physically ill/dizzy when it happens while a game scrolls. That happens because my eyes suddenly don't know what to focus on when everything gets suddenly blurry and try to focus on something that isn't blurry (which makes my eyes go really crazily fast left and right). Good examples of this effect happened during the latest parts of Chuggaaconroy's Earthbound Let's Play. It happens there because the screen tries to flash too often and then blurs the image while you move around. Another example would be this video:
    twitter.com/nickycyansparks/status/1043316126334119936
If your eyes try to desperately focus on something that isn't blurry and go really fast left and right while you play this video, I'd say you shouldn't pick up an NES or SNES Classic, nor the NES Switch service. At least, that's what I'm not going to do. I fear of having a seizure because of the seizure prevention. How ironic, huh?
Shame though because the emulation looks good... besides the sound lag, what's up with that?

Another really cool aspect of the Nintendo Online stuff is that you can make a Japanese account to download the Famicom version of the app, and then use your American or European account and subscription to play the Famicom version of all these games, which is really cool for games like Super Mario Bros 3 or Zelda that are fairly different than their NES counterparts.

"Released in 1983 in Japan..." Insane to think that when the Famicom was released, the Atari 2600 was still in its prime, still the top-selling console, still actively being developed for. They even released the "2600 Jr" model three years later - after the NES had been released in the US!
Hell, Atari didn't release the 2600 in Japan until *AFTER* the Famicom had already been released! (As the Atari 2800.)

To people who want to use a projector, the forced on border might be a bit annoying, as when the projection is on a bare white wall, the pillar boxes would natually only appear as a fainted border, and the overall look would be as if the projector screen has physically become natively 4:3.

If/when they remove the bottom text + dithered border at sides I'll try the NES games, but even one of those two always on features would put me off from playing. I've never had image retention issues on my old LCD TV but I find always on text etc. very distracting.
But I was disappointed to read that the cloud game saves will be deleted when your subscription expires, so I suppose it's good that it's relatively cheap if you basically have to have it active or risk losing saves. Add in the fact that it won't be supported on all games "to prevent cheating", the whole thing is getting farcical.

I am surprised you guys haven't mentioned running an NES Classic Edition through a Framemeister in Pixel Perfect mode then using the Framemeister to scale it to the right aspect ratio. That's how I play mine and it looks great. Not quite as good as my real RGB NES because of the noise, but it still looks really good.

Using the Switch in 4:3 mode with CRT filter, pretty happy with it to be honest, just needs some.. well... more titles and preferably sNES titles as well ;p

I hate to say it but I’m playing NES games way more on my switch than on my real console. Growing up a 16 bit kid I struggle to care that much to go back to it . The switch is just soooo convenient to boot up a quick round of ice hockey or double dragon

    Nintendo NES App:
    7 games in first row,
    7 games in second row,
    6 games in third row.
    Absolutely unplayable.

I'm hoping Nintendo adds gameboy, SNES and GBA relativley soon. While I think the online service is a disaster, if Nintendo could add more systems and games on top of thier NES output, it might actually be a good deal.

i can only guess but SNES games may come next year, by that point the NES library willl be much better because right now its a bit lacking

since they already have nes & snes classic, the online service should've went with n64 games
would make it seem less like they were squeezing people for money
making you buy the same games over and over and over again

Assuming you can actually buy games instead of having to sign up for some nonsense subscription.

Everyone bitches about the service, but I'm just happy that they finally got NES games right. No bilinear filter, no stretching, no degraded color.
