I speak absolutely no Japanese and I have no karate experience, but I would still like to try Karate in Okinawa. Thanks for making this video, it really did help me a lot.
I visited Okinawa in 2019 to train and had a great time. Great people and good times at the Dojo bar. Looking forward to when we can freely travel again and get back there. As always thanks for sharing Jesse.
To approach any sensei in any country is very simple.....respect......be humble...and try to learn from them....as much as you can....share that knowledge with your students...karate lives...grows...and...evolves...we are very privileged to have many strong roots...oss.
I want to visit Okinawa (and Japan!) So badly! Me and the Girlfriend are saving for it currently. Visiting and training would be AMAZING And eating my bodyweight in Sushi and Sashimi. Love your Okinawa series by the way. I hope someday we can get more of Jesse in Japan.
My friend and the best Sensei I have ever trained with Hello Hanshi McCarthy love from Australia. My kids and I were just going over some photos with Hanshi McCarthy we miss you mate and we hope to train with you again soon stay safe Hanshi. 🇦🇺🥋
Thank you very much Jesse I just had my black belt exam in August but one of my dreams is to visit the place of origin of karate and train with the great masters and learn traditional techniques and ancient katas. Greetings from Malaga Spain oss
Also if your training at a legitimate karate dojo, you should be hearing a lot of these common Japanese phrases. When I was child studying in the states Matsubayashi Ryu the Sensei insisted we learn these phrases with no regard that we would ever go to Okinawa. Rather, I think it was to honor tradition and heritage. Sensei Lorhding was a great teacher and I wish, as an older man now, I could thank him for everything he taught me that I didn't understand then but deeply value now.
I can't wait until I can save up the money to visit Okinawa. I've gotten out my gi and Okinawan karate manual from Shoshin Nagamine, and have slowly been practicing again, starting with the basic forms thanks to you and Sensei Seth. It's made me excited to practice again. I need to get some more time under my belt, and money in my wallet before I'm able to. But I really want to.
Oh wow! My Sensei was in this video. I trained with Miyara Sensei and Miyagi Sensei in Futenma. Miyagi sensei’s kobudo is amazing! I was also invited to train at Kina Sensei’s Dojo in Naha who was also in this video. Awesome!
Absolutely right! It should be a common courtesy when going to a dojo you don't normally train to wear a white belt. One of the core teachings in karate is, be humble. I've always believed in that simple courtesy and it had served me well when visiting other schools. Strangely, it's not something you hear very often in the states.
I trained for a week in Okinawa with Uechi Sensei and Andy Sloane back in 2016. I had already been training for 2 years here in the States. One of the best experiences of my life
Went there in 2019, great experience! And I had a pretty clear idea of how to do things and what to see thanks to your blog and videos Jesse. Thank you!
How can I thank you for those works you 've done and you continue to do for the world of karate? I dream to go there just for karate and now I know it 's possible, thank you so much!
We met Sensei James on our 3rd trip to Okinawa, the Dojo Bar is a fantastic place to meet others. James is a great host. Left our graffiti on the Dojo Bar walls. Our guide Sensei Masuo Shibasaki managed to get us a private tour of the Karate Museum and a police escort to visit the Gichin Funakoshi shrine. Okinawa is a fantastic place to visit especially for anyone who is dedicated to the study of Martial Arts.
hello Jesse I had been following your video I am 64 years old but I am interested about karate and inplan to go to okinawa to learn karate however I am just a biginner white belt. i am learning online from a sensei in Philippines. now I think i want to go to okinawa the birthplace of karate
There are only two main steps you really need to know. 1. Contact whoever you want to train with and make sure it is possible. 2. Just go. The rest will sort itself out.
I would really like to thank both of you very much :) It was sooo nice to see all of those places and people again after two years :) Please take care and keep up the good work, Jesse and James (our Team Rocket 😀).
Wonderful tips and beautiful footage, ありがとうございます! The first time I had the opportunity to train in Okinawa, I caused a misunderstanding by saying “Hai, Sensei, wakarimashita” when Sensei would ask if I understood the drill. Seems I was conveying the feeling of “complete, deep, comprehension” instead of “Yes, Sensei, I understand the instructions”. Should’ve just stuck with “Hai!” 😅
A big part of going to Okinawa for me is to meet and interact with the people of Okinawa. Always an amazing and fun time! And so much history. I cannot recommend it enough to any karateka. If you love and are passionate about karate you will love it. And if you aren't you'll love it too. Such a beautiful place.
8:53 ”Mitä kuuluu?” 😂 Didn’t know you speak and understand Finnish! 🇫🇮 Also many thanks for this video! I was about to head to Okinawa last year, but the pandemic ruined the plan. But then again, now I know a couple more places to visit once I get there one day! Thanks for the tips! 👊🏼
@@KARATEbyJesse Wow, that’s awesome! Always thought you a pure Swede 🤯 I think you should make a biography video of your life on this channel sometime! 💪🏼
Hahaha I have been wanting to go to Okinawa and I have been wanting to wait until I at least got to brown belt, maybe even black belt, and then that second to last question got me good, I shouldn't wait
I would add a visit to either Suriedo or Ippon-Do for some Okinawan Karate supplies. Additionally, Asato Dojo has some fantastic supplies as well, still love my sai I got there before I left Okinawa.
Okinawa is on my bucket list, and of course training Karate in Okinawa would be a dream come true, but until this virus settles down, I'm on standby! 😎
I have trained many martial arts stiles. the belt means your level in your style. Yes its a way to allow you to show your progress in your style. do not ever disrespect any Karate style. Oss.
Domo arigato gozaimashita for your video Jesse sensei and James sensei. Sumimasen, I have a question. Onegai shimasu. Is there a custom regarding a color of the envelop that one should be using for the fees? When I practiced in Singapore and Taiwan I was advised to use the red one. Is there anything like that in Okinawa? Thank you.
Excellent well done the history culture to travel it be interesting to visit all the lands to experience the beautiful works of God and to study the ancient history culture and true purpose of the arts keep going strong 👍👊 peace
When I was in the Marine corps I spent a year in Okinawa. In between visiting the local bars I would sometimes walk past a dojo and watch them for a while. Then go back to hitting the bars. Ironically the week I was discharged I started training in Okinawan karate in the US. What a lost opportunity. I do remember after spending much time training in the countryside of Okinawa as an infantrymen it was beautiful and the people were wonderful. This was 1971 and I'm sure that has not changed.
Being a Shotokan based martial art practitioner, Shotokan being Japanesified 😏... What is it about OSU that Okinawans don't like, is it purely the military thing?
Do you want to visit Okinawa? 🥋
Yes
yes

When I went to Okinawa in 2019, the teacher I trained with refused to take payment from me. He told me to use my money to go drinking instead. 😂😂
heyhey lucky men 🙄😊
My other sensei is teaching for free and believe it or not it’s in the US but he’s training outside so it’s harder without a Gi

Dojo bar? Tell me more about this progressive concept.
My children have the very good fortune of learning Goju Ryu from their sensei who lived and studied in Okinawa for many years. We love her so much!

I’ve studied Isshinryu since 1998 and RyuKonKai since 2018. I’d be so honored to get to study either while I’m there.
My friends were planning on going to Japan before the pandemic as a sort of honeymoon, looks like I'm going to have to weasel my way onto the trip
So happy to see Sensei James again!! Praying Dojo Bar can reappear!!
