Dear Jesse Sensei, after watching your latest video, I realized again how important kata applications are, especially chokes, arm and leg locks and throws from the waist, leg sweeps, etc. Thank you so much Sensei Osssu ❤🧡💛💚. During my years of karate practice (Shotokan 5 years, Shorin-Ryu 1 year, Ashihara 1 month), I always asked my teachers about street fighting applications of katas, but I usually did not get very satisfying answers. I remember when I was young, when I had to defend myself on the street a few times, I mostly defended myself by jumping within kicking distance and throwing a double front kick (tobi mae geri), and luckily my opponents who got hit by that kick never got back on their feet. But one day, we had a street fight trial with a good friend of mine, a black belt 1st Dan Judoka on the national team. The result was very humiliating for me as a karateka. I had not been able to hit any other Karate strike technique except for the kizami suki. My judoka friend managed to knock me down with an osoto gari in about 1 minute and then choke me on the ground. When I was a child in Turkey, our elders had made us wrestle on the grass since we were very young (wrestling was in my youth the numer one national sport, it comes from our ancestors, besides traditional oil wrestling is still very popular in Turkey, my grandfahter was a heavy oil wrestler by the way) so all my neighborhood friends knew the basic wrestling techniques, despite that, it took a very short time for my judoka friend to throw me to the ground, because my own mind was only telling me to do karate, I had programmed my mind wrong, because they had not taught me how to do this in my karate dojo. The training and teaching methods were very inadequate back then, aren't they still the same? After this bitter encounter, I started learning Judo along with my Karate training, and about 2 years later, my friend confirmed with a final exam that I had learned Judo at an intermediate-advanced level, enough to use it on the streets with my Karate technique. Thanks to the Judo street techniques I learned, I was now interpreting Katas much differently than my teachers, and most importantly, I was better than everyone else at Bunkai, which is the essence of the practices. Karate-Do and Judo should never be considered separately, and this was also very realistically revealed in your self-defense video. It was awesome, I am so proud with you dear Sensei. Thank you so much to prove us all right. ✌✌👊👊 In addition to Judo, I also studied Wing Chun for about 10 years in 3 different schools. I think Wing Chun is much better at close range than Karate, which is much removed from its diminished essence that is currently taught in Dojos. Karate is actually better than Judo at long range in many ways, because Judokas cannot strike effectively either, but they are clearly superior in close grappling techniques. In addition, I reached the degrees of Kick Boxing (3rd Dan) and Tackwondo (1st Dan). I also took boxing lessons for 2 years, I had already taken my first lessons from my father, who was an amateur boxer in his youth, but I had no experience in boxing except for a few street fights. Knowing Wing Chun was very useful when I fought Bare Knuckle in the ring a few times. In conclusion, real martial arts should be a good combination of all of them, which in this case is Jeet Kune Do (JKD), but not as a style at all, it should definitely not be about imitating Bruce Lee. To take the core concepts and philisophies from his amazing book "The Tao of JKD" and combining them as your very unique individual style. I think we should not imitate, we should specialize in techniques that are effective on the street for ourselves, we should be experts in real life-and-death struggles. Otherwise there is no meaning at all, when we are not trying to perfectionise are lives, our moralities and our Martial Arts with real expieriences from live itself. This is the highest goal for a Martial Artist IMO.

This is really really good you explain "Never use more force than the situation requires" as its not only about staying out of jail, but it reflects the deeper understanding violence is the result of internal loss of control. Our mind is the ultimate navigator of this reality. Life is delicate and only grows in silence. IF in that moment of loss of control that someone is then presented silence by the person they felt all hope was lost with in their moment of suffering, this could end violence. The concepts of japanese and okinawan thinkinking comes from Buddhist concepts and this lead to significantly different fighting concepts. This is why I like your mindset in these videos, because you don't have an ego that prevents proper cherishing of life. This is a reflection of strength which long ago in japan was understood to be what helped children not grow up being afraid of life around us. Children can only become strong if they are taught to acknowledge all realities...The biggest on being how they manage their mind...Keep taking time and care to silence your mind. This season was phenomenal. I had a great time watching each challenge and every one of you fighting :) I hope you will return again some time. Much love and respect from your neighbor in Denmark :)
Cool video Sensei Jesse. So great to see you “laying it on the line” in this challenge to pressure test all you have learned to improve your Karate over the years. You are a true exponent of “the beginner’s mind! that you talked about in one of your earlier videos! Total respect to you! Although, I thought you should have scored higher, especially in that bus scenario with the guy being too “familiar” with you. I thought you handled that, and other scenarios on the bus well enough to score higher. As you said you were trying to avoid fights! which is the best form of self defence!
Well, some of those challenges were very odd, in that most people don't need to break up fight after fight after fight in a bar... But all-in-all Jesse definitely showed that karate training works for what it's designed to do. Any time he was in an exchange he usually succeeded in getting dominant positions with takedowns and sweeps. Pretty cool!
I think your scores were underrated. I'm a giant with significantly more height, weight, reach and ability than most. So far this is the first year I haven't been in a fight since 1992. There is so much power in exercising patience and just being uncomfortable with a situation instead of reacting. with force. I'm not saying its right - but I'll take a few moments of extreme discomfort or a light hit if it means I can walk away without hurting anyone.
That show is my best TH-cam show I have ever seen in my entire life and the most educative content and as well as a competition , shout to those actors who takes the hit just for us to learn everyone did a great job🙏
Loved the way you explained your whole strategy during the series in such an intelligent way, and I love the takedown you made at the bar 2:35. I could replay it all day :)
First of all, thank for you showing some real Zanshin! Control with words first, attitude, demeanor. I love how you first offered solutions of accommodation, and then, even mid-fight you acted as a true Bugeisha, asking to end the dance, as early and painlessly as possible. It's important to try and guide your opponent back onto the path. Nice to see it in action! I love how you have found outlets for your Karate Nerd side, which are also so practical! Kata Bunkai, however, in English anyway, means more like "breakdown", as in a thorough explanation of all possible applications, rather than just meaning "application in fighting". It's about understanding both application, and philosophy, and hopefully aiding to its evolution through your insight as student of each technique. Bunkai is a conversation that should be ongoing among qualified students, you know? As a way of beginning their own journeys toward spreading the art as sensei etc. Signed, Some white belt chick, in love with knowledge and blossoming
In case you care, I hold white belts under instructors ranging from Tetsuya Higuchi, to Muang Gyi, Guro Dan Inosanto, Larry Hartsell, and kickboxing legend Joe Lewis broke my nose when I was 16. Met him, Jerry Beasely (of Black Belt Magazine), Ted Wong, Tommy Gong, Lamar Davis all wayyy back in1994 at Radford University in Virginia. As far I know, I was the first minor to pass Sifu Wong's footwork test, unless he was lying. So many guys today are geniuses and black belts. Nobody just wants to just go down to Nova Uniao and roll until your partner says, "that reminds of playing with my cousin Royce. That was a nice day to get my white belt. Watch out for belts trying to turn black. Remove the stain and wear it white.
Thet thing you said there about only applying the necessary force in a self defence situation is so 100% correct. It is also something that is so often missing in videos I see online, where they treat every kind of attack like a life or death matter where you have to terminate the other guy. Back when I was doing ju-jitsu, our instructors were also instructors at the police academy, so every time they showed an attack, they would discuss appropriate and inappropriate responses. Precisely so you wouldnt be the one ending up in jail.
I was rooting for you the whole time. I have been excited about the season two ever since it was announced. Bad luck that you lost, but great job with the pen and the 1v1s😁
So, I was sad you weren’t in the first season. Then you were the teaser for season two, which was awesome. It was good to see you in action vs real people!
this whole show is a good experiment and experience. every person who wants to learn real self defence should do the same scenarios like jesse nd the others do.
You're an amazing professional in real karate!!! Thank you, Jessy! You have proved that karate works and it's practical and up to a very high standard in a real life situation. So, karate was created for self defense and survival rather than for sports fighting. Thank you very much indeed, Jessy!!!
Love my atomic bear pen. Always on me, no one notices it, but it has a lot of utility if ever needed. Mainly use it as a pen but nice to have a self defense tool and glass breaker in case of emergency. Great job in the championship, enjoyed watching you and everyone else.
Good show. I like that pen and "creating space between me and my opponent." Gotta have space to work! I always carry a pen in public and I have two yawaras (I think that's what they're called) but it's too obvious they're weapons. But pen tactics come from both knives and yawaras. Good video Jesse. I don't know if I would be able to hold up that self defense only ideal against multiple assailants. I target eyes, throats and legs. And I'm not very good at verbal de-escalation. Learning patience and tolerance continues.
Jesse could very well be the best advertisement for Karate around! Maybe since I've seen so many karate dojo's in North America, I feel it's not "special" or "exotic" enough to be the best martial art. But he proves it can be just as effective as any with the right training and mindset. (and I've learned a similar-minded master in nearly any martial art will also be just as effective, IMO) Humble, confident, and has the skills. Worth a follow for sure!
I think you are a top level athlete and martial artist. You have a friendly demeanour which can fool people but you clearly have a fight IQ that is quite high. Always enjoy your videos Jesse as I’ve been a lifelong karate/ TMA enthusiast and practitioner.
I am much older than you, but l still admire you as a martial artist and, more importantly, as a person. I knew you wouldn't let us down in that test. You the man Jesse. Aloha from Hawaii!
Nice just begin with TSG Karate to complete my kyokushin and Jujutsu training I like when Karate is moore than punch and kicks 🥋as always you are an inspiration !
I really enjoy your teaching method. I only went through to blue belt and Karate and now study Nagai Ryu Ju Jitsu. There are many similarities between the two arts. Just as you say Karate is to not get hit Ju Jitsu means the soft way when translated. Allowing your attackers energy to be turned against them is a primary principle that even the most advanced Judoka will forget when things get heated.
In all honesty, I am truly surprised by your skills and proficiency at both self-defense applications of karate and of how wide and deep your knowledge and experience is. Kudos to you and cheers from Poland.
This is what you call a True Karateka Using De Esclation Technique to Manage the situation so that violence isn’t the first second third or even fourth option However afterwards they then approached him and caused even more trouble and at that point Jesse Had no other Option than to Fight honestly Me being a Goju Ryu/Shotokan Practitioner it’s amazing to See Traditional Okinawan Karate and all its Techniques being used You did extremely Well Jesse Keep up the amazing work Sensei 🙇♂️ 🥋

love this season, do you have a collab video with Ranton?
Ranton i feel like dosent understand karate so that could help him
I tried

Jesse
You did great !!!
I’m so glad you made Season 2 after missing Season 1
Thanks for sharing this vid regarding your experience
Just finished watching. Good work mate. Amazing effort.
Much appreciated!
Loved watching how you used karate in the usdc ! Great to see someone using all that karate has to offer!
Thank you! 🙏
Great content! Congratulations, you did an impressive job
Thank you very much!
Great format! Great philosophy! This is true Karate! It is not about competition. It is all about life, health, self-defense. Awesome! ❤
The warehouse performance was very very impressive
That show is my best TH-cam show I have ever seen in my entire life and the most educative content and as well as a competition , shout to those actors who takes the hit just for us to learn everyone did a great job🙏
It's good to see jesse learned the groin attack from 11 th dan master ken.
Ameridote is really effective in street fights
My man. You’re a legend. This is CLASSIC
Loved the way you explained your whole strategy during the series in such an intelligent way, and I love the takedown you made at the bar 2:35. I could replay it all day :)
Glad it was helpful!
You did an awesome job and showed how karate is highly effective in real situations
8:50 is gold. proceeds to takedown the girlfriend as well.
Nunca se meta em briga de casal
Signed,
Some white belt chick, in love with knowledge and blossoming
You are amazing! Your videos get better and better! Thank you
Wow, thank you!
3:53 I'm guilty. Please please arrest me :)
When y saw your comment I was literally in 3:53
You inspired me to start practicing karate, dont stop uploading 👊
Such a good video! You’re super well rounded, was interesting to see you in all these different scenarios
Thank you so much Josh!!
When my man Jesse casually leaves out the time he kneed the counter a few times to intimidate Natan 🤣
Gotta leave some surprises for people who watch the full episodes! 😜
this whole show is a good experiment and experience. every person who wants to learn real self defence should do the same scenarios like jesse nd the others do.
Wonderful episode jesse and with great professionals of fighting including Nathan Levy....OSS!!!!
Awesome to hear 😁
Well wasn't that the most entertaining ad for a pen I've ever seen.
Excellent stuff 👍
Thank you! Cheers!
Love USDC! Great job, Sensei Enkamp!
Great video! The contest videos showed bits of you and Ranton doing forms - I'd love to see more of that if any more was recorded.
Jesse could very well be the best advertisement for Karate around! Maybe since I've seen so many karate dojo's in North America, I feel it's not "special" or "exotic" enough to be the best martial art. But he proves it can be just as effective as any with the right training and mindset. (and I've learned a similar-minded master in nearly any martial art will also be just as effective, IMO)
Humble, confident, and has the skills. Worth a follow for sure!
Love your videos, been waiting on surgery as struggle to walk for 6 years, but soon as it's finished wanting to learn karate because of your videos ❤
Good luck!! 😇
I think you are a top level athlete and martial artist. You have a friendly demeanour which can fool people but you clearly have a fight IQ that is quite high. Always enjoy your videos Jesse as I’ve been a lifelong karate/ TMA enthusiast and practitioner.
I admire that you mentioned about Bunkai, it's an underated self defense method way more effective than other methoids
Story-telling 10/10
I am much older than you, but l still admire you as a martial artist and, more importantly, as a person. I knew you wouldn't let us down in that test. You the man Jesse. Aloha from Hawaii!
bro is the real karate kid
I really like how this advertisment for the pen was made to be so enjoyable! i actually watched the whole video and am really keen to get the pen!
Seriously awesome series of challenges, I imagine this is akin to being a kid in a candy/toy store for martial artists
USDC was an incredible series. Loved how you handled it
Thanks a ton!
Nice just begin with TSG Karate to complete my kyokushin and Jujutsu training I like when Karate is moore than punch and kicks 🥋as always you are an inspiration !
props to @martialartsjourney
Brotha from another motha
I really enjoy your teaching method. I only went through to blue belt and Karate and now study Nagai Ryu Ju Jitsu. There are many similarities between the two arts. Just as you say Karate is to not get hit Ju Jitsu means the soft way when translated. Allowing your attackers energy to be turned against them is a primary principle that even the most advanced Judoka will forget when things get heated.
The art of making great commercials. Lesson learned.
The most elaborate ad for a self-defense pen I've ever seen.
In all honesty, I am truly surprised by your skills and proficiency at both self-defense applications of karate and of how wide and deep your knowledge and experience is. Kudos to you and cheers from Poland.
Wow, thank you 🙏
This is what you call a True Karateka Using De Esclation Technique to Manage the situation so that violence isn’t the first second third or even fourth option However afterwards they then approached him and caused even more trouble and at that point Jesse Had no other Option than to Fight honestly Me being a Goju Ryu/Shotokan Practitioner it’s amazing to See Traditional Okinawan Karate and all its Techniques being used You did extremely Well Jesse Keep up the amazing work Sensei 🙇♂️ 🥋
