  • Morio Higaonna, 東恩納 盛男, head of the Traditional Okinawa Goju Ryu Karate Do Federation (TOGKF), and an Intangible Cultural Asset Holder in the Field of Okinawan Karate and Martial Arts with Weaponry.
Once described as "the most dangerous man in Japan in a real fight" he is known for his extremely tough training and body conditioning. He is one of the elder statesmen of karate, and is pushing for Okinawan karate to be recognized by UNESCO. The interview took place at his dojo in Okinawa, Japan a couple of days before his 84th birthday with footage also recorded at the TOGKF Budosai in August 2023.
    Video Notes
    1) At the start of the interview he says in Japanese his age is 73, but he meant 83.
    2) @13.54 the word he uses is yojinbukai (prudent) not yojinbo (bodyguard) Thanks Miguel da Luz for spotting this.
    3) The additional story about the murder of his senpai Sutayacchi because of yakuza connections was unexpected. After the main interview had finished and we'd started taking down the equipment, he began to talk again. This is why you see a change in video style for the final conversation.
Enjoy the video and let us know in the comments what's your favorite piece of wisdom from the interview.
Sensei: Masters of Okinawan Karate is a documentary series about the amazing martial arts teachers living on Okinawa, the birthplace of karate. It is completely free to watch on TH-cam, anywhere in the world! Series One has more than 1,000,000 views and a fan community of 30,000+ on Facebook.
Learn more about the project here and how you can help here:
    travel67.com/the-karate-maste...
    GOALS OF THE SERIES
    1. Document the stories of Okinawan karate masters and their philosophy on life and their martial arts practice.
    2. Record in the highest quality possible. Ideally 4K or 8K, RAW, multi camera, multi audio
    3. Store the original data as an archival record.
    4. Transcribe and translate the recordings to spread knowledge of Okinawan martial arts, history and culture.
    5. Make the videos available for free online via TH-cam, and on Bujin.tv so that anyone, anywhere can see them.
The documentary series grew out of the Karate Masters Portrait Project which began in 2012. The portrait project allowed amazing access to the sensei, but it was only Chris Willson and James Pankiewicz who got to hear their stories. The documentary series is a way for us to share that unique knowledge with the international karate community, and to archive aspects of Okinawan culture before they disappear.

Back in the 70's, when karate was much different to what it is now, this man was a God to Karateka, no matter what style they did. I would love to have done Goju Ryu but even today there is not a club anywhere near me in Ireland and anyway I am 70 now. Okinawan Karate is quite different to Japanese Karate. The biggest Japanese style - Shotokan is not designed for fighting in the street tho nobody likes to admit it. Shotokan is a "Do" - a "way", such as Iai_do - the way of the sword. Proper style is everything in Shotokan and that's fine. Goju is authentitic hard karate and this man was so very dedicated in his personal trainning in his small Dojo in Okinawa it was so inspiring to see. Just by watching him on TV in the 80's, he along with my personal instructor Andy taught me the spirit of Karate and I am indebted to them both.

The old sensei brought smile to my face and spirit to my heart and i am not a karate man. Well at 11 years old i practiced karate for 2 years then ninjutsu for 1 year. That was a long long time ago.
He said many important truth that are valuable lessons to live life better and in good health.
It's no coincidence that these old master reach past 80 and 90.
But Karate really isn't what it advertises to be. It's not a technique to fight, boxing for example is a far more practical way to throw a punch and tae kwon do a far better way to kick. But karate is more of a mental toughness sport. It will never make you a star acrobatic fighter, but it'll make you hard in spirit and tough against adversity in life outside fighting. If there is one sport that teaches you to get hit, and not flinch that is karate. That is the true unspoken aim of karate, not to fight but to survive and survive in good spirit.

A true karateka in every sense of the matter. Never satisfied with his kata, going through the trials and tribulations of post war training in a country that was almost blown to bits, your sprit and will would have to be as hard as steel…. then eating weeds, well that was a new one on me. Great video! I am so glad you bring these to us. With so much yet to learn this is truly inspiring.

Delightful to see such a professionally produced series. Especially the translation.
I started with Higaonna Sensei at the end of 1973 at the Yoyogi dojo while I was a high school student. He graded me from white belt to Yondan over the next twenty years in Japan. I credit him with taking a boy and making a man. Kansha.

Hello, I was suprised over very poisonous comments here by Mr. Yeino, on Sensei Higaonna and what he was speaking in this video. Blaming many comments as lies. .
Based on his comments he seems to be a long time Okinawan karate practioner, knowing Sensei Higaonna, local karate history and happenings.
These back stabbings and fights among masters happen especially in karate.
For me it was news that sensei Higaonna left IOGKF and established his own 'lounge', TOGKF, like so many other 'masters' have done in past.
This is why there is so many various styles and organisations in karate field. Reasons are many to this development, from how to save karate tradition to jealousy, money and power. Money has bern the biggest motivator for many.
I have personally met Sensei Higaonna and had the honour to train at his Honbu Dojo.
As far as my impression is concerned I found him a very profound, sincere and true ambassador of Okinawan karate.
The only thing I did not like there was, how his high ranked teachers treated very young karate students in kumite sparring, using them as sand bags, hitting them full power.
I was treated, as guest of Sensei himself, with silk gloves. As practioner of full contact karate I could have been able to take those hits, and give also back. But that did not (luckily) happen.
Okinawan karate styles, like Goju-ryu, represent the true roots and origin of ancient martial art history.
We can argue, for a reason, if those techniques are still valid as believable skills of self defense today. Many other, newer fighting methods, have challenged this view.
In spite of this fact Sensei Higaonna and his experience and deep knowledge of karate as part of wider budo scene deserves to be highly respected.

Higaonna Sensei great master. Why does Sensei Anichi say that Higaonna was not a student of him?

    • @Yeino
      @Yeino 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

Miyagi Aniichi told that he was a student of Miyazato Eiichi and he was his sempai. But Miyagi Aniichi studied only 6 years under Miyazato Eiichi before engaging into the Merchant Marine. Miyazato Eiichi also said that Miyagi Aniichi studied only 1 year before Miyagi Chojun died and was never recognized by Miyagi Chojun as one of his official students. Higaonna Morio said that he began Karate when he was 15 years old. He got his 15 on 25th december 1953, so he started Karate in 1954, and studied under Miyazato Eiichi almost only 4 years in the same time as Miyagi Aniichi. AS it took already almost 3 years to master the Sanchin Kata, the first of all, before being taught anything else, and as Miyagi Aniichi was still a beginner when Higaonna Morio joined (trained only for 2 years), it is impossible that he taught him anything, because he was not an instructor. Miyazato Eiichi was the only instructor at this time. Higaonna Morio trained 4 years aside Miyagi Aniichi before he left, and Miyagi Aniichi wasn't an instructor yet. That's what he told himself.
So Higaonna Morio has never been a student of Miyagi Aniichi, even if he placed him on a pedestal.

@@Yeino Funny, a person who is not the Judokan or IOGKF or even TOGKF at all can talk like he is part of it. You can fool outsider that unable to speak Nippongo, but I think that's the way you promote yourself. A lot of unaccurate "storys" shows that you don't understand so much.
There are a lot of local Okinawa Masters from Judokan can tell you the opposite story, such like Bise Chishin Sensei(OGKK), who getting started and training together with Miyagi Anichi Sensei. I am just curious who told you this? What's your source? Or just made by yourself?
By the way, I am sure you don't understand Nippongo. Cause 3:49, Higaonna Sensei just says he start Gojo Ryu after Chojun Sensei died, mistakes in subtitle.

    • @Yeino
      @Yeino 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@wumengtsung952 Yes I do. My "unaccurate" stories are historical facts, from 2 interviews : the first one is an interview of Miyagi Aniichi, and the second one is an interview of Miyazato Eiichi.
Apart from Bise Chishin story that contradicts Aragaki Shuichi story, that contradicts Miyazato Eiichi story...
Let me tell you what Miyazato Eiichi said during his final interview, given to Kent Moyer, a senior student of Hokama Tetsuhiro, from Kenshikai (one of the Higa Seiko's Shodokan branches).
      Moyer :
"Who was training with Miyagi at the time of his death? Meitoku Yagi? Aniichi Miyagi ?"
      Miyazato :
"Yagi, yes. Aniichi Miyagi was my student. He came to Miyagi Chojun to study with him, but he only trained for a short time and Miyagi Chojun died. Aniichi Miyagi came to train under me. He trained with Miyagi Chojun under my direction for maybe one-year. During that time if you add up the number of days it came to about one month training in one year. Aniichi Miyagi was never recognized as a student of Miyagi Chojun. He was only 22 years old at the time of Miyagi’s death. Higaonna Morio became a good friend of Miyagi Aniichi in order to promote his own organization. I told Morio Hiagonna to stop trying to re-write the Goju-Ryu history. I received a phone call from Morio Higaonna when he was publishing his first book. He asked me to help him but I turned it down because he was trying to promote Aniichi Miyagi and change Goju-Ryu history."
The point is : who should you believe ? Former senior students who would have no gain in lying ? Or claiming ones who have based their entire career, reputation, around these stories ?
You can find here the full interview of Miyazato Eiichi :
      gojukarate.co/Interview-with-Eiichi-Miyazato.php
So not only Miyagi Aniichi and Higaonna Morio, but also Chinen Teruo was denounced by Miyazato Eiichi.
The only wrong words from this interview concerns Higa Yuchoku. Miyazato Eiichi surely didn't know, but Higa Yuchoku began his training with Shiroma Jiro, with whom he studied Shuri-te during 6 years. He then began his Goju-ryu training under Shinzato Jinan, from 1934 to 1939. He continued to train alone and was accepted by Choshin Chibana to be his student in 1948.
Higa Yuchoku then founded the Kyudokan Kobayashi Shorin-ryu. Kyudokan still practices some Naha-te specific exercises, like Kakie.
As we can only admit that Miyazato Eiichi didn't know every practitioner on the islands, this is the only particular point, external to his own knowledge that can't be addressed.
Historical facts show that Miyagi Aniichi started to work at the US Air Force Base in 1945, when he was 14 years old, for supporting his 2 younger brothers. If he really began his Goju-ryu training in 1948, like he pretends, then he couldn't surely come often, just like Miyazato Eiichi said.
Higaonna Morio and Yamaguchi Gogen used to be the visible face of Goju-ryu worldwide. They have been published in European and American magazines for decades, and I understand why it is difficult for their followers to think they've all been fooled (not for the same reasons). But during decades, westerners came to Okinawa, asking about Higaonna Morio, Miyagi Aniichi and Chinen Teruo. They not only asked to Miyazato Eiichi, but also to Yagi Meitoku, to Toguchi Seikichi, to senior students of Higa Seiko, to Iha Koshin... All of them kept training under Miyagi Chojun until his passing, and none of them, apart from Miyazato Eiichi and Iha Koshin, had ever heard of Miyagi Aniichi, or Higaonna Morio. There seemed to exist several different training sessions : one for beginners and another for the advanced ones. Miyazato Eiichi was designed as the assistant teacher by Miyagi Chojun, so he surely knew Miyagi Aniichi, but not the senior ones. As Iha Koshin also joined the Jundokan when Miyazato Eiichi left the private house of Miyagi Chojun's family, he also knew Miyagi Aniichi.
When tracking back from historical facts, you can deduct obvious things. But like in every formal investigation, you have to consider not only facts, but also benefits of lies.
If some of them are lying (Miyazato and the other senior students of Miyagi Chojun, or Higaonna Morio and his eldests), who do some lies benefit to ?
Senior students of Miyagi Chojun have never had the will of creating a business from Karate. On the other hand, Higaonna Morio, his eldests and their close friends couldn't have created their international organizations without saying that their lineage was real.
I personally have nothing to gain in denouncing them. I've never made any money from Karate even if I've been teaching it for 23 years now, and I'll never make money from Karate in the future.
Just to be clear : I've been a student of Wado-ryu, since I'd been a Uchi Deshi of Wado-ryu Renmei hombu dojo, under Otsuka Jiro. I've then been a student of Meibukan Goju-ryu, but in the same time I also was a student of Seibukan Shorin-ryu and Kyudokan Shorin-ryu, and Isshin-ryu. I also came several times to train in Uechi-ryu.
I met there many Goju-ryu masters, amongst them Higaonna Morio, Hichiya Yoshio, Kikugawa Masanari and Kikugawa Katsuko, Matayoshi Tadashi, Iha Hiroshi, Minei Yasunobu.
I've been a close student of Kikugawa Masanari in South Africa. I've also trained under Onaga Ryoichi in Spain, and with Willy Rajaonarison in France. I've also been involved in Shodokan, training for years under Oshiro Zenei in France too.
I've never been a student of Jundokan or IOGKF or TOGKF. But I've been involved with Jundokan, IOGKF, and OGKK for several decades.
I don't fool anybody. I should tell you that the term "Nippongo" is available for english westerners only, since in Japan they say "Nihongo" when talking about the japanese language.
I don't need to promote myself, since I don't sell anything.
I'm pretty sure that no Jundokan master will contradict Miyazato Eiichi about what he went through. And even Bise Chishin, who'd been interviewed just said that "Miyagi Aniichi remembered Kata Bunkai all clearly. We trained Bunkai together." and that's it. This is the only thing he said about Miyagi Aniichi.
There is absolutely NO CHANCE for Miyagi Chojun nominating Miyagi Aniichi, who trained a very few (1 year or 5 years, but it doesn't care), as his successor. And if Miyagi Aniichi had really been a Uchu Deshi like pretends Bise Chishin, who took care about Miyagi Aniichi younger brothers, since their parents died during WW2 ?
Miyagi Aniichi, in a 2008 interview, claimed himself that he couldn't go to Miyagi Chojun's dojo very often, due to his job in the US Air Force Base and his younger brothers in need of him. He recognized only 2 persons as his successors : Alexandr Filimonov from Russia and Kato Tomoyuki from Japan. He said himself he began to teach in Jundokan dojo. So even if we don't take into account Miyagi Aniichi's experience, which can vary according to who's asked, Miyagi Aniichi himself told that Higaonna Morio had never been taught by Miyagi Chojun, contradicting Higaonna Morio's first version. I remind you that Higaonna Morio claimed during 3 decades having begun to train under Miyagi Chojun, and that he was the World Chairman of Goju-ryu Karate.
This kind of controversy is kind of impossible to be solved, since most of the ones who were involved have passed away.
The only logical conclusion is :
Miyagi Aniichi, Bise Chishin, Higaonna Morio, Chinen Teruo, Aragaki Shuichi... They have changed their version through time, and crossing their versions only give an unsolvable headache. But as all the senior students of Miyagi Chojun agreed (except for Higa Seiko who passed away in 1966, before the birth of this controversy), I personally tend to believe their version. It suffers no contradiction, and they would gain nothing in lying.
In addition, if we could refer to the post of Nakamura Tetsuji concerning the Okinawan Government, I know that Nakamura Tetsuji, since the split of IOGKF and TOGKF creation, have kind of revised his opinion concerning this lineage affair, and has engaged direct open discussions with Meibukan, Shodokan and Jundokan representatives about it.
I can talk about public things, about the history of Goju-ryu, and about people I've met.
I'm still an active member of OGKK, even if I'm not one of its representatives. I'm still in touch with several OGKK members, such as Ché Jagger and Zoe Jagger-Hinis from South Africa (trained under Kikugawa), or Paul Douglas Donaldson from Canada (trained under Minei).
I don't expect you to believe me. But it seems like you've never ever asked for any information. I do speak Japanese, since I've lived in Tokyo for few months and in Okinawa for several years. That's why I also understand jabbers of Okinawan dialect. I've already a long experience of life and of martial arts in general. You shouldn't pretend know somebody without any information, concerning myself or anybody else.
To be honest, I've not watched this video from A to Z, since it was already controversial from the beginning. So he didn't lie this time. He still lies sometimes during seminars and Gasshuku sessions. But nevermind, let's answer if you have factual information.
If you're in fond of Nihongo yourself, then you should be able to decrypt this Suji no goro awase :

@@Yeino The interview itself with Kent Moyer is problematic. It's pointless to discuss an interview with issues, including the questions he deliberately avoided, which have already been addressed in articles written by David Lambert from IOGKF in Australia, not to mention similar articles by the Lam Sensei in Hong Kong wrote before 2000.(I guess you had never read it, cause it's written only in 中文) I have no interest in responding to the extensive and nonsensical quote you provided. It's all garbage in, garbage out. Writing so much is just a waste of my time.
Stepping back, from these contents, I'm also certain that you haven't actually lived in Okinawa. I've been saying, if Higaonna Sensei is truly a lier, then why would the members of Judokan still give him respect? Okinawa is a small place. Despite its openness to outsiders, influenced by both China and Japan, it doesn't take betrayers lightly. Moreover, just dismissing Bise Sensei's statements by saying he was talking about Shuichi Sensei is strange. Aniichi Sensei and Shuichi Sensei are closely related. Mentioning Shuichi Sensei naturally leads to discussing Aniichi Sensei. If you don't even understand this, I'm left wondering what you actually do know.
Honestly, I'm not really interested in your personal background. I'm only focused on what you've been saying, and that makes my conclusion. The array of personalities and styles you've been in contact with, I could probably list even more, considering that I used to live in Okinawa purely for the sake of karate and martial arts, regardless of livelihood. But truly outing these people, they would likely feel troubled being dragged into such a drama. Speaking of you in terms of Goju-ryu, you're merely an outsider watching the show. There are certain things that don't need to be explained to outsiders. Although I haven't personally interacted with Aniichi Sensei, I find it hard to believe someone who intentionally leads an elderly person with impaired judgment to speak ill of another person and then goes to his funeral to take pictures for publicity. It's doubtful that someone with such actions has a clear mind. Not to mention Nakamura, another lying fraud. I've personally witnessed him lying without any sign of guilt or hesitation. He's a person who does things deceitfully behind people's backs. There's really nothing I can say to you. After all, you're inclined to believe whatever unreliable sources you present. What more do I need to tell you?
By the way, both "にほんご" and "にっぽんご" are valid pronunciations. More formally, the former could be correct, but using the latter isn't entirely incorrect either. Personally, I usually just write the kanji "日本語". Trying to use this to show that you understand is really quite feeble.

@@wumengtsung952 You say the interview by Kent Moyer is problematic. For whom is it problematic ? Only for Higaonna Morio students. Lam King Fung also was a close student and friend of Higaonna Morio, just like Bise Chishin and Aragaki Shuichi. It is problematic for you, because your opinion is a biased and a partisan one.
This is exactly why the interview by Kent Moyer is more credible than you : he's not from this lineage, so he acts as an external practitioner. He's simply curious to know what's behind the rumors. That's why he interviewed Higaonna Morio's master. Miyazato Eiichi had no gain by puking on Higaonna Morio's back.
On the other hand, YOU have everything to gain by claiming Higaonna Morio is legit. This is why your credibility is equal to 0.
You quoted Higaonna Morio when he said he'd never been taught by Miyagi Chojun.
I remember the video of Kuro Obi, named Great Legacy of Karate, with Higaonna Morio. He said that he remembered his teachers, including Miyagi Chojun, and he also said that he had a clear image of him in mind, even fainting to remember a past scene while closing his eyes, as if it happened to him in real life... "I remember Miyagi Chojun sensei who practiced Bo (the staff) every day. But he didn't practice Sai in front of us, and nobody knew where he hid his Sai into his house, for avoiding that a thief could steal these weapons and use the Sai against him or his family...".
Well, formerly, he used to talk about Miyagi Chojun, like if he was already his student when he was still alive.
Everybody on the island knows that he lies, not only to foreigners, not only to his students, bu probably to himself too.
You said that Jundokan practitioners still give him respect when the meet. The youngest ones maybe. But none of the masters from the other Goju-ryu lineages.
Again, I fully understand why as a Karate master he deserves respect. So if he spared his lies to the younger Jundokan practitioners, it's not weird to see them honouring him of their respect.
This said, Higaonna Morio dedicated his entire life to Goju-ryu. He's one of the skillest Goju-ryu masters worldwide. I only said he didn't need to lie about his lineage for being followed by students of published by western magazines.
You don't care about my background. So why did you ask ? Or maybe you wanted more information about me, hoping I was a no-name practitioner for you being able to discredit me and my sayings ? Because this is how WEB TROLLS act.
So you don't believe me. You don't care about my background, but you do care about answering about it a lot ! If you can't believe me, I can offer you something : you can come to our next Meibukan seminar, which I'll co-animate together with Yagi Meitatsu sensei and Alan Sadler sempai. It's organized by Alois Lausmann, in Sokolov, Czech Republic, on 6-8th october 2023. You'll be able to check if I tell lies or not.
You will also find me in the hombu dojo, Naha, Kume 2 Chome-20-19 21, from 12th november 2023 to 14th march 2024 (I'll also share some of my time between Fukushuen hombu dojo and Naminoue dojo of Yagi Ippei sempai.
Don't hesitate to come. I'll be waiting for you.

Hojo Undo are not "supplementary exercises". Those are body conditioning exercises, and not "supplementary" but the basis.
How could he know how many time Miyagi Chojun used to perform Hojo Undo ? How could he know what Miyagi Chojun said or not ? Does he still refer to Miyagi Aniichi ? But Miyazato Eiichi, founder of Jundokan, said that Miyagi Aniichi only studied 1 year under Miyagi Chojun. Higaonna Morio said that Miyagi Chojun designed Miyagi Aniichi to be his successor, but when Miyagi Aniichi was answered if it was true, he only said "it's a lie". Miyagi Aniichi also said that only Alexandr Filimonov from Russia and Kato Tomoyuki are his onl yu successors.
Both Miyazato and Miyagi Aniichi confirmed that Higaonna Morio has never met Miyagi Chojun personally.
Higaonna Morio said himself that he started Karate when he was 15 years old. He got his 15 on the 25th december, 1953. Miyagi Chojun passed away on 8th october 1953, when Higaonna Morio was only 14.
Higaonna Morio says he has students in 64 countries, but it's a lie. It used to be true until august 2022, when the IOGKF decided to not letting him to fire Nakamura Tetsuji as main instructor. Higaonna decided to leave the IOGKF and to create the TOGKF with his hombu dojo for headquarter. So it resulted in a split of the IOGKF : 21 countries decided to join the TOGKF, while 43 countries decided to stay under the IOGKF. So higaonna still has students in 21 countries, not more.
Sakiyama Sogen Roshi was 99 in 2020 (born in 1921), not in 2022, nor in 2021. So when he says "last year", it's not truth.
He said that Miyagi Chojun was not interested in Kobudo training... But I remember a video footage of Higaonna Morio saying that Miyagi Chojun trained in Bo and Sai every day (cf: Kuroobi's "Great Legacy of Karate"). A lie again.
Miyazato Eiichi said that Miyagi Aniichi didn't come very often to the dojo of Miyagi Chojun during his only year of practice before Miyagi Chojun passed away. He said exactly : "Aniichi Miyagi came to train under me. He trained with Miyagi Chojun under my direction for maybe one year. During that time if you add up the number of days it came to about one month training in one year. Aniichi Miyagi trained under me for six years. Aniichi Miyagi worked on a ship and was not able to train very often." A lie again.
He said that Miyagi Chojun taught Karate at the "Police college" after the war, but Miyagi Chojun began teaching at the Prefectural Police Academy of Naha in 1922. He began to teach in the Police Academy of Gushikawa in 1946. His sayings should have been more accurate.
I didn't even watch this until the end. After having watched more than an half, I think the only thing we should retain from this video footage is the Karate practice, not the stories told by Higaonna Morio.

Karate history is rife with inaccuracies. Perhaps you should write an open letter to Higaona and ask him to validate his statements. Who cares about how many countries he's got his students in? After what Nakamura did, he (Nakamura) should have no students anywhere period, yet he does. Suffice it to say, Higaonna's karate is good, and he is a National Treasure of Okinawa/Japan. What are your accomplishments?

    • @Yeino

@@The-Travel-Man From what we know, Nakamura was accused by a few and nothing was proven. The IOGKF committee investigated and found nothing irregular. That was only bullshit launched for discrediting him. It was launched by a few from the USA branch and even 1 from the hombu dojo. Didn't you see somebody was missing in the hombu dojo training ?
Higaonna Morio said he couldn't believe Nakamura anymore and wanted to get back the position of lead instructor. But since he left the IOGKF committee, which isn't a family organization, the IOGKF committee refused. That's it.
As I can remember, the same bullshit accusations had targetted the Wado-ryu founder several decades ago, and it concluded in a split when Otsuka Hironori created the Wado-ryu Renmei organization.
The "National Treasure" title represents his engagement in spreading Karate overseas, just like Otsuka Hironori. That's something nobody can take back from him. But after analysing a bit of Karate history, crossing interviews and witnesses, we can only conclude that Higaonna Morio lied.
I don't need to write to him. No master on the island really consider him as their real equal, due to his lie, and due to the fact he had been promoted 9th Dan before the required age, even accusing Higa Yuchoku to giving grants like if it was candies. But it's true to say that Miyagi Aniichi granted him of his 10th Dan.
History can't be falsificated. My own achievements ? I'm myself already a high grade from Meibukan Goju-ryu, hombu dojo, Naha. I'm one of the Meibukan representatives worldwide, and I'm also an active member of the All Okinawan Karatedo Association. I already know Higaonna Morio personally, since I've trained in his dojo several months, and since we've co-animated several seminars and Gasshukus together (I went for Meibukan though), amongst other Okinawan Goju-ryu representatives. I'm also member of the national technical committee in 3 countries, and one of the OGKK representatives for Europa and Africa. I've not been granted of the special title of "National Treasure", but only Renshi from the Dai Nippon Butokukai, and should pass the exam for being granted of Kyoshi soon.
I'd also been granted of Shodan from Seibukan Sukunaihayashi Shorin-ryu, and Shodan from Kyudokan Kobayashi Shorin-ryu, but it happened several decades ago. But recently I'm also focusing on Wado-ryu, and I've been granted of Shodan from Wado France, where I actually leave. I've just been offered to become the Goju-ryu technical leader for FAMEDA organization, the French branch of WUKF.
Did I pass your credibility test ?
The truth must be told. If Karate builds up personalities and helps for growing better persons, then we can't accept lies to be told without saying anything about it.
History of Karate suffers of lacks during some periods, but if you went to the Okinawa Prefecture Katate Museum, hosted in the Kenshikai hombu dojo, owned by Hokama Tetsuhiro sensei (10th Dan Goju-ryu, Shodokan branch, Higa Seiko's lineage), you'd know better about the real Karate history. You could also track it back to Fujian province, China, and even track it back from South China to India in Kerala province, where lays its far ancestor : Kalarippayattu. There are few lacks, but this part of Karate History is not a blank at all. It's even the most documented period, aggregated with photos and living witnesses.
I'm now giving you back your answer : who damn cares about some master educational method if his years of teaching are tainted of lies ? You did pay attention to rumors about Nakamura Tetsuji, but will you give attention to rumors about Higaonna Morio saying he's bad tempered, yelling on some students when they're not good enough ? I personally don't give a shit to rumors, but you visibly do. I personally care more about the lies spread through a video watched potentially by thousands of people, but you visibly don't.
These are the differences between you and me.

      @Yeino 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@TheReverb1 We've not talked about Nakayama previously, but let's do it.
Nakayama Masatoshi and Funakoshi Gigo are responsible of the changes that happened in the Shotokan practice. They established new sportive forms and positions, added high kicks from French Savate in the Funakoshi Gichin's Shotokan syllabus.
If Funakoshi Gigo is responsible for the technical changes, Nakayama Masatoshi is responsible for their integration into JKA. Nakayama is the one who organized the first JKA tournament, which definitely categorized Shotokan as a fighting sport. Even if this is something really dirt and detrimental for Karate, it also allowed the name of "Karate" to be spread all around the world, even if it didn't look alike real Karate.
When Nakayama decided that competition would change, from full contact to light contact, and from KO to counted points, Kanazawa Hirokazu decided to leave JKA and founded SKIF.
Nakayama sent many JKA instructors worldwide, so this is true to say that he had helped in spreading Karate worldwide.
Although, it would be very wrong to say he was the only one or even the main one who helped spreading Karate worldwide.
As an example, Shotokan is a minority of practitioners in North America : Shito-ryu, Uechi-ryu and Goju-ryu get the largest amount of practitioners, also due to these styles forks, like "American Goju-ryu", or due to the american military bases based on Okinawa. Don't forget that Uechi-ryu has been and is still the style that teach to the largest amount of US soldiers.
Goju-ryu in mainland Japan is Gojukai, founded by Yamaguchi (Gogen) Jitsumi. The full history of Yamaguchi is tainted of lies and nonsense. Yamaguchi himself said he began Karate under Maruta Takeo when he was a 5th grade schoolboy. He also said that Maruta Takeo was a direct student of Miyagi Chojun. If we look closely to this information : Yamaguchi was born in 1909, so he began training Naha-te Karate in 1919-1920. Miyagi Chojun inherited Naha-te from Higaonna Kanryo in 1915. If Maruta was a direct student of Miyagi Chojun, then he studied under him between 1915 and 1920. This said, we could consider him as a senior student of Miyagi Chojun, but if Maruta studied less than 5 years, we can't say he was more than a confirmed beginner.
Yamaguchi said he stopped studying Karate after his entrance in high school, so he studied basics of Goju-ryu 3 or maybe 4 years.
He said he met Yogi Jitsuei (a student of Higa Seiko, the most senior student of Miyagi Chojun, who also trained under Higaonna Kanryo prior to Miyagi) in the university and began to train again with him. 1 year later, in 1929, they wrote an "open letter" to Miyagi Chojun for inviting him in their university. Miyagi Chojun answered several months later, and they organized his travel to mainland Japan. Miyagi Chojun travelled to mainland Japan in 1931, and as Yamaguchi and Yigo had trained with other students of other universities, they made Miyagi Chojun visiting the 3 of them : Kansai University, Ritsumeikan University, and Doshisha University. They made Miyagi Chojun to sleep in their dormitory, Yogi giving him his bed, since he was his main contact. Miyagi watched them training, and he found a joke nickname for Yamaguchi : "the Cat". He probably performed the Toraken (Tiger fist) more like a cute cat than a real tiger...
Miyagi Chojun left after 2 weeks, and never came back again.
Yamaguchi pretended that Miyagi Chojun gave him the task to spread Goju-ryu to all mainland Japan. He founded Gojukai in 1935.
He later came back to Okinawa for being taught by Miyagi Chojun what he didn't already know (as he knew only the first 8 katas over 12), but Miyagi Chojun was not available, and so he's been taught by Higa Seiko and Yagi Meitoku (more by Yagi Meitoku, because Higa Seiko was involved a lot in teaching in the Prefectural Police Academy and in several middleschools and highschools).
After the WW2, he came back several times to Okinawa for being taught by Yagi Meitoku, as Yagi Meitoku had travelled to Taiwan and South China and had a different point of view on Goju-ryu Karate in comparison to his 1930's. For example, Yagi Meitoku was there the day when Yamaguchi inaugurated his official Gojukai Headquerter dojo in Suginami, Tokyo.
These are historical facts, but Yamaguchi lied several times in western magazines, like when he told in the French magazine Karate Bushido that he was a "direct student of Miyagi Chojun" or like in the american Black Belt magazine in 1963 when he said that "Miyagi Chojun commanded him to spread Goju-ryu Karate all around the world"...
Apart from his personal history, he mixed his Goju-ryu with other martial arts and with very japanese traditions, and mixed it with the Shinto religion rituals. This denatured the traditional Goju-ryu, and this, in addition to his liar lineage, can't be considered legit.
Yagi Meitoku was nominated as the official successor of Miyagi Chojun, and founded Meibukan. He then added 1 new kata to Goju-ryu, named Meibuken, and splitted it in 4 Katas + 1 : Genbu, Shujakku, Byakko and Seiryu. The additional is Tenchi. So the actual legit lineage of Miyagi Chojun, the legit lineage of Goju-ryu worldwide, is the Meibukan school, which now gets 17 Katas.
Other senior students of Miyagi Chojun did it differently from Yagi Meitoku : Higa Seiko founded Shodokan, Toguchi Seikichi founded Shoreikan, and Miyazato Eiichi founded Jundokan. Jundokan has removed many things from the traditional forms that Miyazato considered "obsolete" or "nonsense", but as he was the youngest amongst the senior students of Miyagi Chojun, he probably didn't understand why it was the way it was. Toguchi Seikichi added several small optimizations and wrote rules for his school, that are sensed rules, and almost the same that were reported by Mabuni Kenwa decades ago (a kata is against 1 opponent only, etc.). Higa Seiko continued to practice as he was taught by Higaonna Kanryo and Miyagi Chojun.
Their inheritors made some changes again, and split into different directions. This is how Karate is spread.
Miyagi students split officially after his passing in 1953.

@@Yeino Thanks; somehow I have the Karate facts more or less right but confused me all these Goju ryu kai. Even there in the Meibukan kai seems that there are more than one Sensei in charge or using the dojo; like one of the Taira cousins (I think)
About Shotokan; of course I know what you wrote.
      Thank you
