'A Lifetime of Adventure' is taken from the upcoming solo debut 'The Life and Times of Scrooge', which is out in April 2014 via Nuclear Blast. The cover artwork on both the single and the album is by Don Rosa, the illustrator of Disney's Duck characters.
Directed by Ville Lipiäinen, incorporating Mika Jussila's photos of Tuomas Holopainen and Don Rosa in the recording studio, and featuring Finnish vocalist Johanna Kurkela.

I own the graphic novel as well and I gotta say Tuomas is right. It is beyond fantastic. This is different from every single other Disney comic. In fact, forget what you thought you knew about Disney comics, about comics in general. This isn't just ' a comic' for kids and nerds. Don Rosa created something special there. You gotta realize that he has drawn the entire life of Uncle Scrooge, mixing places and persons of our real world with the Disney fiction on such a high level it is unimaginable. If you ever wondered, why the Beagle Boys became Scrooge's arch enemies, how Ducktown came to be, who his parents and siblings were, what his childhood and youth was like, when and where he earned his first million, and the things he did, discovered and experienced, the countless people he met and places he saw long before Donald Duck was even born, it is all in there. It's no comic, it's a chronicle. And a terribly sad one, a tale of countless hardships and especially losses. And Tuomas music catches that perfectly. After you read this, Mickey Mouse will apear boring and pale to you compared to Scrooge. It will change your point of view on practically everything you thought you knew about the character who is so much more than just a very rich duck.
He's a fictional character - made up - the whole Disney 'duck dynasty is'. He never existed !!!! Don't invest too much belief in a talking cartoon duck !! I worry for you.

You see - it would be quite impossible in UK (or even USA) to write such a wonderful and serious sounding piece as this dedicated to a Comic Disney Character, People would take the micky (pun was intended).. Hence my comment to you. But as the (extremely) passionate views on Ducksburg here show, it's revered in other parts of the world (like Finland). Why do you think the Fins (and others) have taken the Scrooge McDuck Universe and Don Rosa so much to their hearts whereas he's practically unheard of over here?.

Tuomas Holopainen's music never fails to impress me, there is so much personality and sincere emotions in it. Is it metal song, a ballad or a soundtrack Tuomas's music is beautiful, truthful and wonderful, I can only compare this music with life itself, it's like the energy of life running through human veins

rstrosah I haven't read the comic either but my guess is because it is one of his favorite stories as a kid and wanted to write music that to him, paid tribute to the story and is his way of showing his appreciation and respect to it.

Oh yes, normally I don't have to cry when watching videos. Even the most tearjerking movies leave me cold, and instead pieces like this and mostly children's movies manage to bring out the tears. I don't know why that is, but I suppose the reason for this is explained in this very song's lyrics "To be rich is to still remember

Even for a cartoon/comic character. That last picture of Scrooge on the mountain fills me with emotion. I really love the stories of when he was young. People always see him as this bitter, rich man who only cares about money. That picture sums up how he got there and that behind the image of a cold hearted man is a boy who grew up, lived a life of adventure and worked to get where he is now. And he took himself time to stop and admire the auroras in the night sky :)

Tuomas is a GENIUS.. if you havent checked it out check his other side-project AURI it has Johanna in it as main singer. also Troy is in it with them.
Tumoas is our Mozart, the sad part is that he never seems to get the recognition he so richly deserves. Smoothly blending heavy metal and classical into something greater than both, truly a musical genius.

As good as many good songs are, theres just something more with orchestra backed songs. Perhaps its the additional subtlety and nuances.

It might be just my opinion, but: Amazing song, amazing voice, amazing... well, just AMAZING!
Its a good thing. Many of Tuomas' creations have got me bawling, like the spoken-word in Song Of Myself. Its a good thing, personally I find it refreshing to be brought to tears by good music. Music has the power to evoke emotions and inspiration in a way that nothing else can and it has brought me an indescribably amount of pleasure over the years. I know most people who are born deaf are perfectly happy and do not wish for any pity but I can't help feeling somewhat bad for them
The perfect time to listen to this music is in that time. To really appreciate the beauty that is here.

You know when you listen to a masterpiece like this that your life is better than it was and you can sense everything different, beautiful colors appears before you, and they where there before, you just couldn´t see them. Now this amazing music has opened your mind and soul. it's magic sung by an angel.
I only discovered Nightwish a month or so ago. I'm greatly impressed by the genius of Holopainen's composing ability. I only wonder why he isn't more well known.
One reason is that radio stations don't like to play long songs.

Before Alan Young dies, I would love to see a 'Life and Times' mini-series. You can't get much more epic than matching Teddy Roosevelt in a fistfight.

What an amazing, powerful voice behind this expertly composed piece of music. This is not my type of music (normally only tolerate metal) but it was so brilliant I had to listen multiple times.

My word, this is so beautiful. If I told someone else who doesn't know anything about Tuomas or Nightwish that I've truly fallen in love with a mini symphony inspired by Scrooge McDuck, they'd probably just burst out laughing, assuming I was joking. Tuomas is just beyond amazing.
Hey, Disney, do you hear that? It's a sign for a movie based on *Life And Times Of Scrooge*, using traditional animation, not that CGI Pixar/Dreamworks wannabe you tries, but failed many times (excluding some surprisingly good movies, like Wreck-it Ralph, Tangled).
It's time for a decent hand drawn animated movie, huh?
Disney would fail on creating a movie about The Life and Times because this comic book describes everything that Disney can't describe. (clues : a lot of "Prisonner of the White Agony Creek", A Letter from Home, the end of chapter 9)

Franciszek Rychlewicz Actually, I don't. For me, Scrooge will always be more vivid on paper than on a movie. Also, I don't want to _hear_ him. Using the classical duck voice would make his character childish, but using a normal voice would be betray the usual depiction of Duckburg's citizens. No easy way to make everyone happy here, and I think that a movie would be a bad thing for the whole community.
I'd say a Scrooge-movie would be even more fantastic with live-action. Of course I don't mean actors dressing up like ducks - but I'd like the very humanish Rosa-interpretations of the Duck characters to be respected.
BTW, Pixar's movies are all awesome with beautiful animations, although classical ducks really don't fit with that style.
Two of the greatest artists of all time joined. The ONLY CD I own still. Don Rosa made Scrooge Epic, what Barks only laid out in scratch. It is wonderful to read and tuomas' soundtrack does it all the justice it deserves.

For heavens sake, I came here expecting nothing more than a music video. Not nightwish-esque, not tarja, just a guy named Tuomas Holopainen with his song, and I enjoyed it. Just stop complaining nightwish crybabes. oh, and forgive me by my bad english.
The beginning of the song reminds me of the song that plays in Burmecia in Final Fantasy IX, which is a good thing in my opinion!

Standing in my Living Room at 02.00 am and can´t stop this Masterpiece. Was a Fan of The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck since i read it in my local Comics (in Germany they where printet in the Mickey Mouse Comics). If i ever met Don Rosa, i don´t want a Photo, i don´t want an Autogram i only want to say thankl you for the Joy he brought into my Heart.
The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck is one of my most favourite stories of all time. It's not just a comic book, it's epic tale. And this song, the music, is just perfect. Great job from Tuomas Holopainen, awesome job

dimetonn Tuomas at least said that he creates his songs from stuff that are really important or bother him very much and that the making of a song is not a one way process. The song from the demo changes a lot until it becomes the final form that we fans hear.In a interview he said " I gues we try to create music that we ourselves ( the Nightwish band ) wanted to lisen to but there was nothing similar on the market. "

After that initial choice there will come times of testing too.
Sometimes you have to go against hardships, and what others say, to swim against the current - stay true to the path you chose. even if uncertainty sometimes nags, and eats you, challenging your intuition.
And after your work, you migh need to humble yourself and put your brainchild under the other band members scrutiny. And accept the changes needed - to get to the perfect choice. First choices might be a bit vague, and often, sometimes the perfect choice presents itself only after a few trials and even errors. It's the opposite of mental jerking off.

At first it was only music that sounded good and kept replaying in my head.
Hours later i finally listened and started to wonder what this weird thing tried to say.
Then i remembered the things i knew about scrooge, his first coin and his unreasonable and (financially disadvantageous) beloved adventures.
Then i suddenly started to understand and listened to this song for the first time how it was meant to be listened to.
It was never about the money, he also isn't really greedy. It is just that every touchable coin for him is a memory he made and it is unique. Thats the special thing about his money for him. It is not just money that can be exchanged to other money or coins. For him it is unique and that is also why he defends it with his life. Each coin is a touchable and unique memory and for him, that is his very life.
Took me some time and actually made me grow. Thank you from my Heart.
I'm not gonna lie, this is honestly one of the best music videos I've ever seen. Also, the best homage to Scrooge McDuck and Don Rosa for all time!
Just found this today, and it made me well up. I read parts of "The life and times of Scrooge McDuck" years ago as a kid in a magazine, then got the collection (paperback, german version) as a young adult. Still have it. This song fits the story real well, and I got to go buy the CD.
Seeing Don Rosa draw in the video was great, and I feel I learned a lot just by watching those few minutes. The song, the music, the mood... all great.
Props for Don Rosa (seriously that is a kick ass name) for coming back and doing what is probably his first big project since he left Disney nearly ten years ago. But Don Rosa we miss your fantastic artwork. Tuomas, thank you for giving the legend the theme song he deserved.

I adore Tuomas Holopainen and his music since at least the early 2000s. I adore Don Rosa and his stories about Scrooge McDuck since...I don't know...a very long time. Now I adore the voice of Johanna Kurkela.

Anette's been causing some drama over her split with the band and some people have chosen to believe her stories and blindly laying the blame on Tuomas. Some are still mad about the way Tarja was fired and Anette's dismissal has re-ignited some bad feelings. Don't worry about it though, Nightwish have a bright future with Floor and Troy so all is well.

Same with me. I don't know why everyone is so concerned about the singers anyway? Luckily Nightwish is still a BAND and not a singer with accidentally the same musicians playing the singers songs all the time.
And if there is any "Head" of the band, in a way that it is a unreplaceable person, it is Tuomas in my opinion! Nightwish without Tarja, anette, floor, whoever is still Nightwish. Nightwish without Tuomas is only Tarja, Anette or floor with companions. Isn't he the composer of nearly all the songs? and doesn't he also created most of the lyrics? I don't want to derogate the other members of Nightwish. all of them are great musicians and artists. But Tuomas is THE artist in the group. My opinion. ;)

Since I first heard this song, I knew I needed to read the Life and Times of Scrooge. Now I've finished it, and I can confidently say, it absolutely deserves an album like this. A masterpiece for a masterpiece for a masterpiece.
Now I just need to read Carl Barks' comics.
Don Rosa and Carl Barks. One wonders if there will be another to get the title after these two titans of Duck comics.

I adore the guitar solo and the way it builds and then cuts back to the bassoon, then choral section at 5.37. Its brilliantly constructed.

I'm glad he did something he really loved doing. It's his music, his talent, he can do what he wants with it. I'm sure he did it to make HIMSELF happy, not every disapproving unappreciative jerk out there. But to his loyal fans and friends, we all appreciate him at least sharing this, as he put it, very intimate project with us. Don't like it? Don't listen or buy it. I hate it when people act like THEIR idea of what good music is the Ultimate idea of what good music is. Arrogance is uglier and nastier than any badly written song in the world. Period. But this..this is not bad..this is Beautiful...this is Tuomas.

I am honestly very touched by the story telling in this album. The interpretation of something that Tuomas found inspiring into something that inspires me is just amazing to me. He is truly a master of imagination and story telling!

As long as you're pleased with you've found. This is my all time favorite album. I really recommend to read the comic book collection this album is based on, with this music you'd love to have a movie or a series with this as a sound track.
