Yep, saying 'I don't like metal' is like saying 'I don't like cheese'; what type of cheese? It's such a huge, diverse category but sadly too many people assume it's black/ death/ doom and nothing more...
It's interesting how Epica and Within Temptation are Dutch bands, and Nightwish is a Finnish band. Basically the whole symphonic metal genre is in Northern Europe. Must be the air or something.
Don't forget the lead singer form Nightwish is Dutch as well :P -and Delain is worth a mention as well as Dutch band. And in the Finnish scene are a lot more bands as well.- Indeed must be something in the air ;)
If you look at Germany and other European countries, although not as prolific, have a good Symphonic Metal culture as well. My theory is that is because classical symphonic music is more entrenched in their culture than other parts of the world. It is not uncommon for kids to be brought up listening to both Metal and Classical music. Would be interested on others thoughts about this.
Not only is Simone Simons incredibly talented and gifted but also she's strikingly beautiful & charismatic. A true metal goddess. Just like Tarja, Ailyn, Lori Lewis, Sharon etc, just to cite a few. We're beyond lucky to being able to listen to and appreciate each and every one of them🤘
I'm not even sure what it is about this, something about the synergy between the video, lyrics and the song itself is just beautiful. Something honestly feels inspiring about it to me, which I can't truthfully say about any other music video I've watched. I keep coming back to it whenever I need a little encouragement.

Fuzzy Terror Technically there's probably no arguing with that. However, when so much symphonic metal is just pop/rock with a keyboard on top it's hard not to love Epica for staying with a proper metal sound, even on their more mainstream songs. If you want to hear what I mean go check out Unsun - Whispers and then come back here. :P
dragonzrmetal Not saying anything bad about her voice and I'm sorry to hear she's ill. What I don't really like about Unsun and many other symphonic metal bands is that there's no "grit" or attitude to the music. When I listen to Epicas "Martyr of the free word" for instance, there's a lot of that attitude that's missing from Unsuns "Whispers". You may like Unsun regardless, and that's absolutely fine. It's just not my cup of symphonic metal. :)

@@levalaleen5241 Nope, not joking. Currently having Epica and Sirenia as my all-time favourites in symphonic metal, Nightwish is far away, somewhere in my top 10. Why? Because I just almost never got goosebumps by their music. It's just that the choirs/vocal harmonization is a lot in the background, power metal-esque, not really high-pitched, a-v-e-r-a-g-e. While Sirenia's choir is outstanding, Epica's choir is also huge; both Epica and Sirenia have more variety - using tempo switches, growl vocals, choirs, normal female vocals, the occasional rare opera-esque vocal... this is some serious compositional diversity. And mostly, I'm getting goosebumps all the time. The Latin Sirenian choir never fails, Ailyn's voice was something unique and special in Perils and TSLP (these albums are so epic in my list that I rarely listen to them so I don't get "used to them" cuz I'm getting shivers throughout their whole entirety). And in Nightwish? Tarja's lyric soprano didn't help either cuz lyric ones don't use power in their voice, they use delicacy and they sing out long lyric lines. Which is less epic than Xandria's ex-singer Manuela Kraller who is a dramatic soprano - dramatic ones are the exact opposite - they use sheer power and can sing clearly over a full orchestra (while a lyric one can only be heard over it) or Dianne van Giersbergen who is a spinto sporano who is somewhere in between both and combines both. Anette never sung operaticly; Floor basically never sings opera and I'd rather say her vocal performance in EFMB was rather boring - she reached something like E5 or F5 in the whole album while her range reaches something like D6 (at least the new album was better, yay). Sooo here this is why I consider NW overrated

Adead dude I’ve seen you on multiple EPICA videos telling people to kill themself. Chill my guy, you’re not doing the band any justice. If anything you are sickening their reputation by coming off as a cancerous elitist who wants everyone to share a similar opinion about the band. You can voice your opinion but voice it less radically, or just stay silent and let people say what they think and let them be.
She and the whole band did improve on the last years. Her voice was always beautiful, but now it's cleaner... And the clip is pretty professional, very different from the phantom agony ones.
Thank god I got to see Epica: "Design Your Universe" Tour 2019. November 3rd. As Epic they sound here on video, they are the same live. Pura vida Epica!

Visualmente, este es uno de mis videos favoritos de Epica. Realmente creo que es un muy buen concepto y edición y la canción también es de mis favoritas. Epica siempre entregando música y contenido de calidad.
I personally feel like there is a big difference between Epica and other bands like Delain. I believe Simone Simons makes the big difference along with the rest of the band and the choir and each song is unique. With the aggressive atmosphere, balance and variety that characterizes their music, the feeling you get after listening to one of their songs is indescribable.

While I can't state enough that she has an amazing voice, my favorite bit was with the male singer. Few people can mix that raw aggression with the melodic stuff that well. Can someone tell me the guys name?
I've read all the idiotic posts and I've gotta say this is refreshing like Opera meets Metal... not to mention the beautiful redheaded singer...this music although hard-to-put-your-finger-on the genre.. is very innovative to say the least , so to all the negative posters keep hatin,..doubt that you could do better and to Epica,...Rock on!!!...and thanks for something unique and different!!!

Don't forget that Nightwish fired their operatic vocalist, Tarja Turunen, in October of 2005, and hired a classic rock vocalist by the name of Anette Olzon as their new frontwoman in 2007. Ms. Olzon was fired in September of 2012, and the frontwoman of ReVamp (as well as the the former frontwoman of After Forever), Floor Jansen, (a good friend of both Nightwish and Ms. Turunen) was asked to step in for the rest of the tour (both legs in the Americas), and was subsequently confirmed as the new vocalist in October of 2013. Nightwish released their first studio album with Ms. Jansen as their frontwoman at the end of last month. They could once again do the opera-meets-metal thing to the fullest, because Ms. Jansen is a proper metal vocalist who has operatic capabilities, but they don't want her using her operatic technique (though apparently "Stargazers" has made a reappearance on the setlist - the first time since 2004 - and she uses it there), instead focusing on other aspects of her brilliant voice..

Music like this will not go mainstream with grunts and growls. It is also too heavy for regular radio airplay, and it is too European. Simone isn't 17 years old anymore, and the U.S. market loves their Lolita pop stars. Yeah, it is just sad.
this song can be important for ocd phobic people who now have a hard time when there really is an invisible danger of viral roulette going on. / Years ago Epicas singer Simone survived a dangerous bacterial infection. Then she developped a phobia for contamination. This song is about breaking free from that mental health issue.

Every band has one music video by which is immediately recognized. If I must choose the best song which describes Epica is this one. Everything about this video is EPIC literally, music, choreography etc. just no words! This is why band is called EPICA. Also its my first song from this band and I fell in love in their songs. 10/10 rating from me!

I can't handle Simone's voice. I'm always looking for a song that won't mesmerize me, but it's never happened. Even after listening to the same songs after one hundred years, she still makes me cry.
Elton John once said of Nothing Else Matters by Metallica that it was one of the beautiful songs ever written. I can't really disagree, however I submit this song to that category.. This song is perfection, every note, beginning to end. It still moves me after the 100th listen.
I have no idea what the lyrics are or what the song is about. Apparently it's about a chick (possibly Dana Scully) being consumed by the Venom Symbiote, William Wallace stuck outside of his castle in the rain wishing someone would invent the umbrella already, a mysterious eagle possibly bent on pecking out Wallace's eyeballs, and a medieval version of the Dog Whisperer with a totally badass wolf minion. Oh, and some witch (also possibly Dana Scully) who used an enchant spell on me. That's what I interpreted this song to be since the lyrics were cancelled-out by the harmonics of the instrument EQ levels. Sounded good, though, even if the lyrics need a WWII Navajo code-talker to translate it. Thumbs up. :)

I don't think it's the best, especially if you consider both their last album (The Quantum Enigma and The Holographic Principle) which got a lot of great song (the Second stone, the Essence of silence, Victim of contingency and Beyond the Matrix, Edge of the blade, Universal death squad, etc.
Everyone talks about how good Simone is but man, Mark is super underappreciated. Not only is his writing up there with the greatest prog and classical writers but his guitar work and the growls are always on point. Plus, his role as the chief/king in this video was downright awesome.
@@Too-Odd The growls and screams are not a product of 1999. They're a stylistic choice and while it may not be for everyone, there's nothing wrong with it. In fact, harsh vocals like that add a LOT to the emotional impact and the intensity of songs.
@@jakobfel2 Simone Simons has beautiful vocals in this song, but no song with growls like that makes my playlist. After Forever, had Floor Jansen, and Mark wrecked many of those songs thinking that death growls were cool back then too. Yeah, it is a stylistic choice, and music changes. Growl vocalists had their half decade of fame, and it is time for them to leave the vocals to these talented women who can actually sing. Luckily for me, I can replace that part of the song with just instrumentals and add it to my playlist.
@@Too-Odd It has nothing to do with "being cool" or it supposedly going out of style. If anything, harsh vocals are more "in" now than they've ever been. It may not be YOUR taste but it's the signature of this band and there's nothing wrong with that.
@@jakobfel2 Of course it is my taste, and I am allowed to comment on it. Harsh vocals may be "in" for a small group of listeners, but it is one one the reasons metal music has gone underground because most people dislike it. This is a fantastic song with a great video otherwise, and everyone I have showed it to says, "That's great other than that one part," and they will never listen to it again or likely nothing else from Epica because of it. You can believe it is a generational thing, or a "taste" thing, but it is a music thing. Growling sounds bad, and it cheapens every song it touches.

It's interesting how Epica and Within Temptation are Dutch bands, and Nightwish is a Finnish band. Basically the whole symphonic metal genre is in Northern Europe. Must be the air or something.

If you look at Germany and other European countries, although not as prolific, have a good Symphonic Metal culture as well. My theory is that is because classical symphonic music is more entrenched in their culture than other parts of the world. It is not uncommon for kids to be brought up listening to both Metal and Classical music. Would be interested on others thoughts about this.

However, when so much symphonic metal is just pop/rock with a keyboard on top it's hard not to love Epica for staying with a proper metal sound, even on their more mainstream songs. If you want to hear what I mean go check out Unsun - Whispers and then come back here. :P
dragonzrmetal Not saying anything bad about her voice and I'm sorry to hear she's ill. What I don't really like about Unsun and many other symphonic metal bands is that there's no "grit" or attitude to the music. When I listen to Epicas "Martyr of the free word" for instance, there's a lot of that attitude that's missing from Unsuns "Whispers". You may like Unsun regardless, and that's absolutely fine. It's just not my cup of symphonic metal. :)

@@ГеоргиПеев-й3ы you're joking right? Nightwish is much bigger in terms of music, writing, every memeber in this band is the best in their field. But then, art is a subjective matter... so.
@@levalaleen5241 Nope, not joking. Currently having Epica and Sirenia as my all-time favourites in symphonic metal, Nightwish is far away, somewhere in my top 10. Why? Because I just almost never got goosebumps by their music. It's just that the choirs/vocal harmonization is a lot in the background, power metal-esque, not really high-pitched, a-v-e-r-a-g-e. While Sirenia's choir is outstanding, Epica's choir is also huge; both Epica and Sirenia have more variety - using tempo switches, growl vocals, choirs, normal female vocals, the occasional rare opera-esque vocal... this is some serious compositional diversity. And mostly, I'm getting goosebumps all the time. The Latin Sirenian choir never fails, Ailyn's voice was something unique and special in Perils and TSLP (these albums are so epic in my list that I rarely listen to them so I don't get "used to them" cuz I'm getting shivers throughout their whole entirety). And in Nightwish? Tarja's lyric soprano didn't help either cuz lyric ones don't use power in their voice, they use delicacy and they sing out long lyric lines. Which is less epic than Xandria's ex-singer Manuela Kraller who is a dramatic soprano - dramatic ones are the exact opposite - they use sheer power and can sing clearly over a full orchestra (while a lyric one can only be heard over it) or Dianne van Giersbergen who is a spinto sporano who is somewhere in between both and combines both. Anette never sung operaticly; Floor basically never sings opera and I'd rather say her vocal performance in EFMB was rather boring - she reached something like E5 or F5 in the whole album while her range reaches something like D6 (at least the new album was better, yay). Sooo here this is why I consider NW overrated

I personally feel like there is a big difference between Epica and other bands like Delain. I believe Simone Simons makes the big difference along with the rest of the band and the choir and each song is unique. With the aggressive atmosphere, balance and variety that characterizes their music, the feeling you get after listening to one of their songs is indescribable.

Don't forget that Nightwish fired their operatic vocalist, Tarja Turunen, in October of 2005, and hired a classic rock vocalist by the name of Anette Olzon as their new frontwoman in 2007. Ms. Olzon was fired in September of 2012, and the frontwoman of ReVamp (as well as the the former frontwoman of After Forever), Floor Jansen, (a good friend of both Nightwish and Ms. Turunen) was asked to step in for the rest of the tour (both legs in the Americas), and was subsequently confirmed as the new vocalist in October of 2013. Nightwish released their first studio album with Ms. Jansen as their frontwoman at the end of last month. They could once again do the opera-meets-metal thing to the fullest, because Ms. Jansen is a proper metal vocalist who has operatic capabilities, but they don't want her using her operatic technique (though apparently "Stargazers" has made a reappearance on the setlist - the first time since 2004 - and she uses it there), instead focusing on other aspects of her brilliant voice..

Music like this will not go mainstream with grunts and growls. It is also too heavy for regular radio airplay, and it is too European. Simone isn't 17 years old anymore, and the U.S. market loves their Lolita pop stars. Yeah, it is just sad.

this song can be important for ocd phobic people who now have a hard time when there really is an invisible danger of viral roulette going on. / Years ago Epicas singer Simone survived a dangerous bacterial infection. Then she developped a phobia for contamination. This song is about breaking free from that mental health issue.

This is a great song. In my opinion it is their best song hands down.
I have no idea what the lyrics are or what the song is about. Apparently it's about a chick (possibly Dana Scully) being consumed by the Venom Symbiote, William Wallace stuck outside of his castle in the rain wishing someone would invent the umbrella already, a mysterious eagle possibly bent on pecking out Wallace's eyeballs, and a medieval version of the Dog Whisperer with a totally badass wolf minion. Oh, and some witch (also possibly Dana Scully) who used an enchant spell on me. That's what I interpreted this song to be since the lyrics were cancelled-out by the harmonics of the instrument EQ levels. Sounded good, though, even if the lyrics need a WWII Navajo code-talker to translate it. Thumbs up. :)

I don't think it's the best, especially if you consider both their last album (The Quantum Enigma and The Holographic Principle) which got a lot of great song (the Second stone, the Essence of silence, Victim of contingency and Beyond the Matrix, Edge of the blade, Universal death squad, etc.

Everyone talks about how good Simone is but man, Mark is super underappreciated. Not only is his writing up there with the greatest prog and classical writers but his guitar work and the growls are always on point. Plus, his role as the chief/king in this video was downright awesome.
This would be a fantastic song without the growls. These bands really should get out of 1999 and just go with their lead singers.
@@Too-Odd The growls and screams are not a product of 1999. They're a stylistic choice and while it may not be for everyone, there's nothing wrong with it. In fact, harsh vocals like that add a LOT to the emotional impact and the intensity of songs.
@@jakobfel2 Simone Simons has beautiful vocals in this song, but no song with growls like that makes my playlist. After Forever, had Floor Jansen, and Mark wrecked many of those songs thinking that death growls were cool back then too. Yeah, it is a stylistic choice, and music changes. Growl vocalists had their half decade of fame, and it is time for them to leave the vocals to these talented women who can actually sing. Luckily for me, I can replace that part of the song with just instrumentals and add it to my playlist.
@@Too-Odd It has nothing to do with "being cool" or it supposedly going out of style. If anything, harsh vocals are more "in" now than they've ever been. It may not be YOUR taste but it's the signature of this band and there's nothing wrong with that.
@@jakobfel2 Of course it is my taste, and I am allowed to comment on it. Harsh vocals may be "in" for a small group of listeners, but it is one one the reasons metal music has gone underground because most people dislike it. This is a fantastic song with a great video otherwise, and everyone I have showed it to says, "That's great other than that one part," and they will never listen to it again or likely nothing else from Epica because of it. You can believe it is a generational thing, or a "taste" thing, but it is a music thing. Growling sounds bad, and it cheapens every song it touches.
