great review as always, Thomas.I am a BMW fan, so even though the Audi had some great features such as the B&O sound system, i still favour the Inline 6 cylinder in the BMW as well as its driver-focussed persona. One more thing i like about this particular 5 series is the more conventional kidney grill unlike the M3 and M4.

@FastFood69 Exakt! Ultra-Quattro ist Haldex (permanenter Frontantrieb mit sozusagen latentem Allrad), Quattro (Urr-), bei div. großen Motoren (noch), ein tats. permanenter Allradantrieb (auch ohne Schlupf), Torsen.
From USA. These comparison-type of videos by Autogefuhl are invaluable, they are almost scientific in nature, he really goes into extreme detail trying to compare cars. Been thinking about the type of new car I would buy, it should be below 100 thousand dollars/euros, preferably below 70 thousand. I have watched Autogefühl episode where he really thoroughly compared X3 and X5. In USA people buy a lot of SUV but I think this episode made me look into sedans.🚗🚗🚗

Those standard headlights on the A6 are a definite deal-breaker. You just have to upgrade them for the looks.

Hey Thomas, great pick for a comparison episode. I love watching your reviews, and really appreciate what you are doing. There is one small correction to be made: the Audi A6 TFSI is using quattro ultra technology with the 7-speed dual clutch transmission. Therefore is front weel drive predominantly - might explain why the BMW is better accelerating out of the corners. As per my knowledge, only the A8, Q7 & Q8 has the classic quattro 40/60 split with the 8 speed torque converter with this 3 litter petrol engine.

Oh Thomas, I can see your struggling, you feel the Audi is better, but in your heart you’ve expected the Bmw to win… if the Bmw would be the real winner, you would have said it in a heartbeat :) I’d take the Audi, overall build quality is better, better feel, feels more luxury, easier to live with and also with a more usable boot. You’ve said all that, the Bmw only wins with the engine noise and feel, but the more pronounced engine noise and feel can also be a result of a lower grade of quality and less noise isolation overall 🤷♂️ great video though! A pleasure watching your reviews, as always 👏

Love your reviews. You are one of the few (If not the only one) that systematically rate Audi steering over BMW (For both A4 and A6).
I am wonder whether this is the fact that most of the other reviewer use track driving feedback as basis instead of daily normal people driving? Reviewers has been criticizing Audi for understeering handling while it's know fact that understeer is safer for 99% of driver in day to day situation.

Of course shows up on my feed a day after I got an A6 on lease. We only get the 2.0L 4 cylinder option where I live but even with that engine I loved how it felt on the test drive.

Nice review! I am a BMW fan. I used to have E39, E66 now I am having G30, and absolutely agree with you that BMW has lost its sharp, tough and responsive steering wheel and suspension. I could literally feel from the video how good A6 was on a highway. It reminds me my old E39. They definitely should fix that, otherwise they are in trouble.

Exciting comparison! I could not decide. From the operability clearly the BMW, but unfortunately I and also my "kids" are taller than Thomas. So the BMW is too narrow.
I like Audi and the exterior design is great. The operation is a horror. Until this model I always drove the A6 Allroad, but here I had to switch to Mercedes.
Currently none of the 3 premium manufacturers offer a compelling deal and so I am already 2 years overdue with a new purchase.
I will probably buy the E-Class used again with fewer kilometers until the manufacturers have customer-oriented offers again.
The current message from Volkswagen to install manual control again makes hope.

I didn't realize how much I like the clicking sound of buttons until you always check for it!! Same for real control knobs rather than touch. Oh, and I would take an Audi over any BMW anyday.

Built quality it's the 540 no rattling noise, or plastic stitches.,the BMW iDrive is the Best in the automotive industry...The B58 engine is the masterpiece,,.the dynamic and engineering...at a lesser price. clearly the winner is 540...
Got an A6 for this new year in india - firmament blue color, excited and happy. This channel was the reason i should say - though the variants offered in india are different. Overall it comes to the mechanics and tnat dont change. Thank you. Each time i see a review of Audi, confidence grows but their sales has come down for some reason. Do you know?
Each car A6 or 5 series or e class are great in their own areas of focus. Comes down to personal preference at the end of the day and the dealer relationship.. childhood was in Chennai, there is a great location too at which the Audi store is located . Used to see that to and fro office. Becomes a dream to get one..
On the Audi official configurator A6 with 3 litters petrol engine have quatro ultra. And is it rear wheel biosed or is it real torssen ?

In the U.S., some of the 2023 A6s (premium plus and prestige trims) have the basic headlight due to chip shortage etc. More recent ones seem to be back to normal with matrix LED headlights. The basic headlight just look to plain... Ordered an A6 55, premium plus trim, in an Audi Exclusive color - Hope mine get the matrix LED instead of the basic one... will see when it gets here, probably end of next month or early January 2023.

The A6 need redesigned it starting look dated compare to Audi newer products. I think A6 etron is coming next year with new tech and design.
That is a very strange spec Audi indeed. Heads up display, tour and city packs, 4 zone climate etc but no ambient lighting or matrix leds. I do know that Audi had real issues with chipsets for the matrix leds and they dropped from the spec of a number of models as did the wireless charging pads and panoramic sunroofs for a while. Maybe this is what has happened with this particular car as its clearly too high spec to have the basic light setup.
On the Audi Germany website you cannot configure a normal A6 with Matrix LED so you're most likely corrext.
General lack of parts. semiconductors.

BMW will never achieve the same driving comfort as an Audi. and this advantage makes Audi always better than BMW.
@superglue_ ive had both. I personally prefer bmw's interior and tech over any modern car, however audi has an edge in terms of driving comfort and maneuverability

Of course you know that the 5 series is reaching the end of its 7 years product cycle and next year we will see the G60 frame, completely new 5 series. Maybe the steering will be better on it!

Great video. I test drove both the 5 series and the A6 as my daily driver and took home the A6. All the points in your video were spot on. The major difference to me when sitting in both cars had to be the difference in technology. The A6 cockpit feels very modern whereas the 5 feels dated. I was recently inside my colleague’s 8 series and noticed the same thing. It’s a shame because it’s really what is holding back the 5 series. I do think that for those that like a sportier look, some of the options on the 5 will give you that look. I drove a four door M3 for a while and loved it. However, now I was looking for a more professional looking car with a subdued sophisticated look. I could not be happier with my choice.

What about the s-tronic gearbox on audi a6 wich has some problems and has not the same reliability like bmw 5 series wich has zf 8 speed gearbox?
Easy to remember about Quattro: permanent Quattro with optional sport differential only available with 8 speed Tiptronic (6 cylinder diesel, S6 and RS6/RS7). 3.0 TFSI QUATTRO as tested has 7 speed S-Tronic with Quattro Ultra.
You are correct. I was mistaken that the 55 TFSI has 40:60 standard quattro and tiptronic, it is an exception. Only 3.0 litre engine that has s-tronic and quattro ultra, all others have tiptronic and permanent quattro.

The A6 wins the exterior design contest. However, the 5 Series wins the quality and best engine contest.
When BMW launched the G11/12 Seven Series back in 2015, I criticised them for the touch screen HVAC controls. Now I realise, with hindsight, that was incorrect because that is still preferable to the 'all in one' touch screen which they're using nowadays. Basically I am realising I need to order a G30 before they do to its successor what they've done to the G20 LCI and ruin the interior...

I think the BMW's steering response could be a bit better (less dampen/numb) with 19" wheels. That 1" difference, while not being huge on paper, can be noticeable while driving.

Both are nice and top in the segment but in the end I went for the 6GT :D More space and not a Touring/Avant, I am closer to sedans even if I live in Germany :D
I have a high spec pre-facelift 540i xdrive. The engine is a masterpiece. I was leaning towards the E-class until I sat in the BMW, it's so much better in person compared to videos. The driving position is 10/10 for me. If you like driving but also comfort, get this, you won't regret it.
Fully agree as I have the same car. Still, I lack experience of driving an E-class.

I’m so in love with Audi design❤ in normal I’m a big fan of Bmw and i used 5series in thailand, 5series is look a bit chuck some old but when the more you look then more you see beauty.
The important question, can you transfer carplay/android auto maps to the gauge cluster screen? in Audi or BMW? or are they limited only to infotainment screens?
not possible. This starts with BMW OS8 (one example of the newer OS8, like in all-new 2-Series Active Tourer, X1, X7 facellift, 7-Series etc

Great video. I live in the metro us and would easily pick the a6. For a daily driver, it is such a comfortable commuter car with nice sporting characteristics when needed. It really is a better luxury cruiser than the bmw as it wins in many of the "practical" categories. I do like the exterior design of the audi but the bmw definitely looks a lot better.

I see what you are saying about the BMW exterior design being sportier but it seems somewhat generic, where there’s something about the current Audi “Prologue” based edgier styling that comes across as modern, performance oriented and unique.
I will admit that the seats in my newer S5 and Q8 are not as comfortable as I would prefer, certainly not as good as my recent Volvo V90 and V60 sport seats. There’s also a metal frame part inside the lower seat poking the left outside hip area in the driver’s seat, perhaps just to those of us more “athletically” built folks. The passenger seat is fine. I feel like I am ever adjusting the driver seat to find comfort - every time I get in these new Audis. I wonder if this A6 is the same? Absolutely no such issues with numerous Volvo’s and Mercedes cars I’ve owned over the last 10 years. I can’t speak for the BMW; haven’t been interested enough.
Glad to see the V6 turbo lives another year in these cars. A Stage 1 software flash on either car makes for perfect usable power.

The BMW looks much better
I wish to share my observation on a door closing sound of a BMW 5. The M550i version, which I tested, had a softclose function, and the door closing sound was quite metalic, as it is audible in this video, I did not like it. Now I have the brand new M550i without the softclose feature, and the door closing sound is quite smooth. Thus, the tech behind such feature defines the door closing sound. I believe that while making such review videos, the reviewer should pay attention to such details.

I watched this and picking up a Technik A6 tomorrow. Will get tuned right away. It gets you 390 hp and 499 ft-lbs of torque, plus much lower turbo lag.
The BMW seems good but I don't like the exterior or interior as much. It's not even close for me.
I already have a 2012 A6 that is tuned to 500 hp and I like the exterior of that more than both of these, but it's getting old, sadly. The interior is nicer in the new Audi.
Ideally I would have the C7 exterior with the C8 interior. That would be the perfect combination for me. Oh, and a physical MMI dial please. I will really miss that simple control and satisfying clicks.

Hello and thank you for this amazing review. I'm currently in the market for a car, currently have a 2013 vw GLI with about 127k miles so I believe it to be about time for an upgrade. I'm currently torn between a 2019 audi a4 prestige quattro and a 2018 bmw 540i xDrive. Both are priced similarly at around 30k. Any tips or suggestions or preferences you could share?

Happy with my 540i which i've bought in 2018. Consumptionwise it's great, i average 10,4l with fast and normal driving.
Same here with my 2017 540i X-drive.

You had any major issue with the car?
@@JaxCoD first oil filter dissolved, and some wood parts were creaking. Also the control unit for the automatic highbeam had to be fixed. Sometimes Carplay loses Connectionor freezes. But otherwise i‘m still very happy with the car.
As an A6 owner I'd say A6 is a very comfortable car but it's somewhat pedestrian (especially if you are coming from a more sporty car; last car was c43).
Yes this is somewhat sad.this is because they want to sell s and rs cars. I switched from a5 to s5 both b9 models, so i feel it.
@@dgukov not really its just the way they are designed. if you want sporty you go for s series if you want really fast rs is the way to go. this is suposed to have more comfort
I've owned 11 BMWs in my lifetime, 3 currently (E39, E92 and F06), so I would definitely take the G30. I'm disappointed that BMW has lost its way a bit in terms of steering feel. It needs to reclaim its crown in that area for sure. Excellent review as always.
I own a 2022 Audi A6 Quattro 3.0L V6 Turbocharged Mild Hybrid EV-Gas (MHEV) F1 Premium Plus. An absolute beast of a machine :)
Just had my test drive of three vehicles - Audi A6, BMW 5 and MB E class. E class and 5 series were surprisingly similar to each other in terms of handling which is due to very similar four-wheel drive distribution among rear and front axles. Even the weight of a steering wheel felt the same or E class and 540 and or Audi it was much much lighter.
I liked the sporty look of the A6 as its lowest (by height) and widest and the side profile looked really good. Interior wise the quality, technology and overall design were just insane. Second-row leg room in Audi was the best among the 3 cars and also the most comfortable.
E class felt inside very small in comparison to A6 and 5 series even though its boot was a bit bigger than in Audi or BMW. Nevertheless, I didn't like the fact that 2022 MB doesn't support wireless carplay. Also the graphics in the multimedia felt a bit incomplete after Audi and also overall user experience isn't that great. On the other hand, E class had the best sound isolation.
BMW felt almost way too strict with its interior design and after the Audi, I felt that BMW is not up to date with its technology. Yes, the screen is big, graphics are good, but can't compete with Audi.
To conclude, all three cars are extremely close to each other and it's a tough choice. Audi made the best impression while MB was the opposite. BMW is a good car, but it feels almost a bit too boring in interior design.

audi looks like it's gonna loose a body panel at higher speeds and the interior is trash. also, there's something wrong with their engines, too much lag. previous gen was way better this one's a fail.
100% agree with your comments here, I'm thinking about either getting an Audi or BMW, both cars look amazing but in my opinion the Audi looks that much more fresher in terms of interior design and looks more sporty exterior wise too....I'm going to get the Audi A6
@@theotherchannel2028 Almost exactly my feelings - I drive C8 Allroad and it´s suspension is just great (yet big step ahead the previous generation which I also had) but the engine (3.0 TDI) and especially it´s connection with the gearbox (tiptronic) is a disaster. How could AUDI cripple these two brilliant parts per se (both the engine and gearbox from ZF are legendary) just by bad SW solution is a great mystery to me. Also the interior quality went down a mile (thin plastic, sooner or later things rattle all around, somehow cheap feeling - again something I did not experience in the previous generation). BMW though - however it´s interior might seem outdated - still keeps the solid look and feel and simply "holds together" (also tested for long time). So for me AUDI C8 generation is a disappointment whereas BMW g31 wins it here.. AUDI is still very close to my heart but I sincerely hope they´ll do something about the decreased quality and especially diesel engines/gearbox combo in the next gen..

I don't know what are these other people talking about, I can only assume they're either paid or blind. lies like those only give car manufacturers courage to continue to rip people off. it's sickening. they should be called out when they try to cut corners.
Great reviews! On this you've only missed the gearbox behaviors and brakes. In the future I'll recommend to use some measurements equipment like sound level measuring device or gps speedo.

From USA: stage 2 tune brings the B58 in BMW alive. Car feels totally different by adding 80 more hps
BMW for me, engine, design. I don‘t like touch screens bcs (1) more destraction from driving therefore less secure and (2) cleaning all the time. But it looks a little bit more modern. I drive an Audi at the moment and it feels a little heavy at the front.
I respect understated. Rings my pick. No small thanks to being undertstated and I long thought of the brand.
Respectfully the beemer a dime a dozen. Unlike it you did not call out Audi for a missing cruise control at this price. Safe to assume in the package.

Really tough to say, had a little more rain with the BMW 5, and the engine is louder with the 5-Series. Both are really good no doubt. Might be a little more quiet experience overall in the Audi

5 years ago, for comparison I rented and drove in separate occasions a BMW G30 520d and a previous gen. Audi A6 2.0 TDI, both 190 HP, similar low mileage, almost new. The sitting and driving feel were so much better in the BMW. Audi, still being a very good car, somehow felt raw, dull and boring compared with the BMW. It felt just as a more luxurious VW Passat, which is also a very good car but not so exciting, IMO. My wife shared the same opinion.
At that time, I owned a BMW 3 series so maybe I was slightly biased towards the BMW, I don't know.
For the last 3 years I've owned a 2017 BMW 540i X-drive and I enjoyed every moment driving it, so much that I often drive just for the sake of it.
These are both very good cars and the choice mostly depends on personal preference. If one looks at the bare figures or often needs a working car for transporting people and their luggage on a certain luxury level (such as company executives), the Audi might be a better option. However, if one buys a luxury car for his/her own driving enjoyment and occasionally needs to carry more people with luggage (such as family trips), the BMW might be a winner.

For me? The 5 series in the 540i X-drive is just about the perfect "sporty" sedan. The B-58 straight 6 cylinder, the excellent ZF 8 speed, it's just a better package overall. Having said that, My own money would be spent on the M440 X-drive grand coupe model! It's just that more practical and even more sporty!
Ever tried the comparable Audi, as I think is far superior, X drive also a very expensive option to Quattro

Sometimes Audis can be undercover Porsches. Like my 2020 SQ5. Quality is remarkable compared to my wife’s BMW X3 M340i. Thomas’s BMW door slam reminded me of that difference and encouraged me write this. The BMW handles better though, but I’m a Audi guy!
Door closing sound: I do agree. Interieur: you can see more hard plastic elements on the Audi. For example the airbag cover on the steering wheel, door panels, middle tunnel… I think the bmw is better made.
