    The ROM and pain in my left shoulder greatly improved after doing this session a few days in a row. Jodie's instructions are detailed and easy to follow. The added bonus was improved coordination. This is a good brain gym practice!

      Yogini exactly my thoughts! we need to do a lesson more than once. Not overdo it like e.g. the 5 Tibetans (which seems to be lifetime practice), but still need to do a couple of times to get the results, and maybe 20-40 times to excel ...

    I have sessions with an Egoscue method posture therapist. Although I have been making progress bringing my body into alignment, my left shoulder dysfunction has persisted. I started off with a very limited range of movement and pain when moving my arms back. After getting the hang of the coordination, I was able to achieve touching the floor with my hands in both directions without pain. I still can't believe it, so I will try this again just to make sure, but my first reaction is amazing!

    Hi Jodie, I did these exercises and it made me laugh because sure enough, it made such a huge difference! Even the one time I have done it so far. I should have known, because after a few minutes already I could crack/snap my toes. Don’t ask me why, but whenever energy starts flowing, everything starts snapping. I use to snap all through every taj chi lesson. And it’s great, an audio check, since I’m really stuck a lot of the time (neck, shoulders, etc etc etc). Thanks very, very much for your videos!

    HI Jodie. I have shoulder impingement syndrome. Are there Feldenkrais lessons for that?

    • @JodieKrantz
      @JodieKrantz  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Daniel, Feldenkrais works so brilliantly when you have a problem with inefficient movement, tight or sore muscles or joints, posture and alignment issues and many other musculo-skeletal problems. However when there is something impinging, you sometimes need a scan to work out exactly what structure is getting pinched. So some medical input might be needed if the exercises such as this one don't bring about any improvements, and especially if the pain becomes worse afterwards. So I would suggest to see your doctor, who may suggest a scan. If you can address the cause of the impingement first, then you can use Feldenkrais exercises such as my Effortless Posture series and the Lazy Archer lesson (Improving Reaching and Turning). These exercises will help with preventing recurrence and maintaining your mobility but they may not fix impingement. Thanks for subscribing Daniel. Jodie

    Jodie I carry a ton of tension in my traps. Which then translates into neck tension it's typically on my left side to the point where my chiropractor has mentioned that my upper rib seems to go out. What would you recommend for that. My shoulders definitely feel looser after this exercise.

    • @JodieKrantz
      @JodieKrantz  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Joel, thanks for posting. Upper trap tension is so frustrating. So often it's a stress response and goes along with breath holding. There are so many Feldenkrais lessons which can help. I would definitely try part 2 of their lesson, I'll post a link for you

    Hi. I can see how this can be helpful with freeing the neck and shoulders. But is it normal to have trouble in the beginning doing the whole ripple, back and forth, without thinking of each movement?? This is my first video with you and I will spend more time with it, but right now it's not possible for me to have those movements flow. Nobody else mentions this, so I am wondering if it's usual to have trouble at first learning it. (I've done some Feldenkrais before, but this seems more intricate.)

    • @JodieKrantz
      @JodieKrantz  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi NSpector
      Thank you for your question. I am so sorry that i somehow missed it till today due to my settings being accidentally changed without my awareness.
      This is a very common experience for people just starting to do Feldenkrais. It is also a problem with learning from a video. Remember when you look at my movements that I've been doing this for over 20 year and it's my life's work!!!! You don't need to compare yourself with anyone else. What's important is that your own movements gradually become easier. You will absolutely improve with practice. I want to encourage you to continue and i'd like to give you a few tips.
      Reduce effort - only do what feels super easy
      Tune into the sensations into your body
      Slow down your movement - half the speed you are doing should be better - this will help you to get 'smoother'
      Remember you can't do it 'wrong' or even badly as long as you stay comfortable.
      Thanks for your patience and I promise I will reply very promptly next time. :-)
      Kind regards,
      Jodie

      @@JodieKrantz You could do a video just laying out these Feldenkrais basics, if you don't already have one. It's such a different way of thinking from most other practices that it seems worth introducing people to it.

    Hey there! Just a question. My husband an dI both notice that when we do the arching/rounding and the neck goes down with arching and up with rounding, we get really sore suboccipitals. Any tips on how to avoid that?? Thanks so much.

    • @JodieKrantz
      @JodieKrantz  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Andrea, yes I do. Try more support under the back of the head such as a folded up towel. Also make smaller, slower movements.
      The sub occipitals are some of the hardest muscles in the body to let go of. Head control is learnt very early in life and can a particularly strong habit.
      In this lesson when you arch the lower back you may hurt these muscles if you actively try to bring the chin towards the chest without relaxing the back of the neck. So switch the focus to softening and yielding rather trying to achieve a goal of doing it correctly.
      Hint: the more you soften the chest and ribs the easier and more comfortable this will become

    when reading or playing piano, etc. is it ideal to keep your head looking horizontal and when the words/notes are lower than horizontal, to just use your eyes to look down there/ I know in feldenkrais, we always talk about the whole body moving together, but in those instances, it doesn't seem practical. Would that cause strain though to just move the eyes down?

    • @JodieKrantz
      @JodieKrantz  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Andrea I think you are have it all figured out. Yes, when you move with the whole body you reduce strain on anyone part. Yes, when playing the piano it's usually more comfortable to keep head up looking at the music and to play the piano by feeling with your fingers. however sometimes you may need to glance downwards with your eyes and you could allow the whole body to soften downwards in a little bit of flexion to make looking downwards easier. The important thing is to allow your whole body and not just your hands to move as you play the piano. In particular allow your pelvis to be free expressing the music with your whole body. Keep well! Jodie

    • @ImpulsoCreativo9322
      @ImpulsoCreativo9322 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JodieKrantz Yes it's fun learning and becoming more aware, but questions spring up and it's nice to have one interested in the same to share. Thanks for your time. Another feldenkrais guy talks about using the eyes more so you don't overuse the neck. He talks about not using the neck to look at a phone so I think it's a balancing game. for example with piano playing, keep the head at the top of the page of music, but when you get to the bottom of the piano music page, just use your eyes, no?? Or when you read, the eyes can go down alone to the bottom of the page so that you're not constantly flexing and moving the head. A balance game. It's fun to learn but frustrating because everything I do, requires thinking now. Thanks for the tips!

    • @JodieKrantz

      Hi Gretchen. "Lower" the shoulders here means lower them towards the floor when the back of the hands approach the floor in either side of your head. Hi Yobo. Thanks so much for posting here. This lesson not only gets your neck and shoulders moving, it also helps you to integrate it with the movement of your chest and thoracic spine. So yes, it should be a good lesson for you. Often people with a stiff neck are holding themselves tightly in the upper ribs and the junction between the neck and chest (level with the base of the neck. This Awareness Through Movement lesson is good for getting more rotation happening there. You might also like the series I've done on the Spinal Arches (will be posting part 3 soon) as this helps with the connection of the neck to the thorax in a different plane of movement.

      @@JodieKrantz how do I know if my pain is coming from my left hip or disk? It’s in that little dip and spreads across the buttock. I went to 5 chiropractors over 20 years. All useless. I’ve never gotten an answer. Hypnotherapy therapy the past 4 years has helped my overall chronic pain but still poor body mechanics so I can’t exercise at all and stretching is painful my muscles never recover or grow. So so hopeless

      @@thatwickedsmahttraumachick it can be really difficult to tell hip pain apart from lower back pain, even after full assessment and MRI scans. Frequently it is both. Have you had any scans?
      Regardless of the cause it's important to keep the body moving. This lesson is an good place to start but keep the movements small and try to reduce any unnecessary effort

      Yvan Willard, I made this video several years ago and since then I've bought better audio equipment. Please check out my Effortless Posture Series and compare. The reason I don't take the older ones down is that some people can hear them dependent on the device they are using
