Pitching the Hilleberg Allak 2 in a Snow Storm | Winter Camping at it's Wildest

  • Watch us battle the elements in a snow storm just below the summit of a remote Munro in the Scottish Highlands. 20mph+ winds and more snow rolls in throughout the night, creating challenging conditions and an epic wild camp to remember!
    Whenever we head out in the winter mountains, we take ice axes, crampons and make sure we have fully charged battery packs. We're constantly assessing the route against our abilities, have a back up plan and aren't afraid to turn back if the conditions aren't on our side. The mountains will always be there.

    Great video! 👏🏼 You can clearly see that it helps a lot with 10mm poles in that wind. The tent behaves much more stable than if you had used 9mm poles, I think. Will probably buy 10mm poles for my own Allak 2 after I have seen this video.

    Great video guys. Was up Ben Donich last night, very different conditions. I find i can’t use my quilt past October I like the snugness of a sleeping bag then too much. Got the normal tensor when I blew a baffle on my exped a year or 2 ago. Really like it too. Allak 2 hmmm 🤔

      You can see our house from the summit of Ben Donich! Great summit 👌🏼 very different conditions at the moment though, crazy how much can change in a few weeks. Sleeping bags are great for winter, do love how light quilts are though. Really rate the Tensor and the Allak 2, especially in winter. Some things are worth the weight 😉 appreciate you watching and commenting 🙏🏼

    Dear Ben and Megan, Loving your awesome adventures! And learning so much about winter camping from you, especially in the snow. I’ve been a three season wild camper for decades but your winter expeditions encouraged me to tackle an overnighter on Dartmoor in January and two nights on the Rhinogs last week, though necessitating an upgraded mat - Xtherm - with a 4 season bag from Alpkit. Thanks!! By the way, what stakes do you use for the snow? Working my way thru your back catalogue 😊Cheers, Graham

    • @OutdoorIntrigue
      @OutdoorIntrigue  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi Graham 👋🏼, sorry for the very late reply!! We really appreciate you watching and your lovely comment! Sounds like you’re having some brilliant wild camps. We both love Dartmoor, and in winter it’s even better. Good kit choices you’ve made, a decent mat and bag are so important to winter comfort. All that experience you have will put you in a good place for taking on winter in all its forms. For snow we use a variety of pegs depending on the expected conditions. Usually a mixture of MSR Cyclone & MSR blizzard stakes. Take care and happy trails!!! Ben & Megs

    Great video,best one yet on the allak 2 would be interesting too know how far this tent can be pushed,I have also this tent,I have chosen too go with doubling the poles haven’t tried them yet would be interesting too know if anyone else has done a test on this yet,

    • @OutdoorIntrigue
      @OutdoorIntrigue  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it can be pushed a long way with the right pole setup. Double piling with the 9mm poles would definitely add a lot of structure. I have the 9mm poles and the 10mm poles and you could even double pole that way, it would be extra weight but insanely strong. The main issue with the Allak as standard is the 9mm poles are strong enough for such a large shape in strong winds.

    Fantastic video, what a beautiful part of the world. Your videos feel effortless and are a pleasure to watch. Great idea swapping out the poles for 10mm ones, have you had any issues clipping or unclipping the thicker poles from the tent?

    • @OutdoorIntrigue
      @OutdoorIntrigue  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much for the lovely comment Simon 🙏🏼 appreciate you watching! No issues with the poles, the clips feel a little more snug but it’s not been an issue or felt like it’s putting too much pressure on the plastic, would defo recommend 👌🏼

      Thanks for watching Paul, glad you enjoyed it! This was mid-April from memory, but end of January - March is usually the best for snow in Scotland. The west coast is our favourite but tends to have more technical routes, which can feel a bit more intimidating if you’re not used to hiking in snow. The Cairngorms and east coast are usually a bit more straightforward (obvs route depending!) and are a nice way to get used to crampons / ice axes. Hope that helps, let us know where you end up choosing 🙏🏼☺️

      Thank you! Appreciate you watching ☺️ so far love the Allak, it’s really spacious without having a crazy big footprint and very capable in winter conditions, especially when you add in the 10mm poles. It’s a smidge heavier than what we’d usually carry but for the security and comfort in tough weather it’s worth it 👌🏼

      Thanks Gary, glad you enjoyed it! One of our most memorable camps, the views out that way are just unreal. Great Video! My Girlfriend and I are planning a word tour and need a tent which can withstand very harsh conditions like Alaska, Patagonia etc. but should also have decent ventilation for warm climate like Australia. It's also important to be fairly light and packable since we want to be able to go on hikes up to 10 days. It also shouldn't be to much of a pain to stay and cook in the tent during long lasting rain. I know it's impossible to find a tent which is perfect for all those conditions but the Allak 2 seems to be a worth considering. What do you think from your experience?

    • @OutdoorIntrigue
      @OutdoorIntrigue  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey 👋🏼, sounds like you guys have incredible plans!! The Allak 2 is definitely capable of very harsh conditions (especially if you add 10mm poles) and it’s extremely well made and tough. It will last incredibly well because of the quality. The down sides are it’s slightly heavy, and it will be very hot on warm climates. You can get an all mesh inner option that would help with that but it’s pretty expensive. If I had to choose one tent then the Allak would certainly high on the list. It’s also very liveable on long trips. Not many other options that are so versatile. The Nallo would be one to look at also. 😊
