Let's compare the very extreme Ono Ava 115 to the Lima 82 Paddle.
I didn't make comment of this in the video - but how this translates into bumpy water is WAY more important than flat water.
Cadence or paddles per second might be a far more important metric in the bumps; meaning the ono ava could lose in that realm. Another question for another video.

I'm not just comparing these paddles I'm trying to comment on whether or not the new fancy QB paddle will have that much of a return on your investment in learning to DW Paddle Up and DW in the bumps.

Very nice discussion and arguments. I would also add the drawback of possible shoulder pain or hurt if you use a bigger blade with bad technique. I have 3 sizes and use mostly the smallest because It is more responsive and I can sprint on a higher cadence. No shoulder soreness until I use the bigger sizes

Nice video Dave - 100% agree, paddle technique is key and its worth putting some time investment in on that. Larger paddles certainly help, but 15 years ago thats also where SUP surfers started ( because it was easier) but then in time blades got smaller following injuries to shoulders and backs etc... so thats worth perhaps bringing into the discussion? I was wondering if you had the opportunity to test the qb stingray paddel in the meantime. Could you please share your opinion (being a „larger“ foiler as myself) regarding to paddel-power abd cadence, which IMO is getting more important in the Progress of downwind-paddling. Thank you so much 🙏
I very much lean on the side of cadence is more important so long as you’ve got the right board. The smaller the foil the more cadence matters too. I’m planning an updated video on the whole thing.
Thx, I pretty much supposed so… and I recently got the 8.4 KT dragonfly, so I made the step to the „long and fast“ shape. Gamechanger!!! Next thing would be the smaller foils and I did already learn that I don‘t easily reach the necessary cadence to accelerate the Board in tricky conditions, so I translate your answer: go and give the stingray a try?! Or would you say shape doesn’t matter, only get a smaller paddle however the shape is…? Really appreciate your kind comment
If you were to do a proportionate analysis on the amount of splash, perhaps it would be similar accounting for size of the blade. I also feel like technique is a bit overrated. Think about the start like a drag race... the starts aren't pretty but power generally seems to win the day to get away.

Nice vid mate. How about paddle length for DW? 10 years ago in the sup surf phase it was eye brow length, what have you found?
What is this Starboard lima? How old is it? It looks a mix of the Enduro and Lima. I have a Lima pre preg carbon which has a more squared tip.

Im a simple man, big blade good, not bendy shaft good, less weight good. I reckon that lots of volume in a board is a good thing.

Yup - I'm now switching to smaller blades as I've gotten better. Lima is on my list of considerations. Working on a paddle with Axis at the moment.
