I’d only seen those hydrofoil boards with a motor attached to them, mind blowing how fast & far you can go with just the foils, leg power, and tons of youthful courage. Great adventure, awesome editing, great vid. Congrats to both of you - this one’s bound to stay in your hard-drive long enough to tell your own kids about it.😊
@@extremechimpout You couldn't be more wrong - the ones that do are called e-foils, where the "e" stands for their built in electric motor, which are the ones I mentioned I'd seen before. The ones this kid rides are fully autonomous and rely on water currents, balance and the pumping action you see him doing. The reason he makes it look so effortless is simply due to the fact that he is one of the best in the world at it, and his buddy is really good as well. The science behind this technology is fascinating and quite intricate - check out this vid explaining the physics of it all, though to be honest a lot of it goes beyond my comprehension - basically they work akin to airplane wings, where the water current as opposed to air beneath the wings creates the lift you see. Of note, all I've read since watching this vid mentions that it's extremely difficult to master them, and many suggest you need to be an experienced surfer first - the other option is learning with the e-powered ones. Here's a deep dive into the physics: th-cam.com/video/fzig8JR2iT0/w-d-xo.html
That's crazy. 20 years ago this is a full video part with sponsorship and Laird Hamilton talking about the science behind it. Today it's just this quiet video on youtube with 100k views. Props guys!
I can’t count how many times I’ve come back to watch this. Absolutely inspirational every time. It simply crushes every notion and perception I’ve had with every conceivable inter-island travel possible. Unreal.
Something so satisfying about watching the foil blade cut through the water. I need to try this. Thank you for sharing this adventure. Loved watching it. ...I'd need like a heavy duty mini umbrella that I could deploy to pull me when my legs get tired...that is one hell of a work out.
Epic crossings, I’ve crossed the Ka’iwi channel 5 times by sailboat from LA. Seeing those swells brings back a flood of memories. There’s nothing like downwind swell riding.😎
Aloha! I am so glad you two did this together for mutual support and also for sharing it with a comrade. This is science fiction come to science fact. Next is Hawaii to California.
Epic ride!! It would be great to see the angle from on the board, right behind you. Those "flying" moments with your arms out - the viewer would just FEEL it with you, visually. So beautiful! Mahalo for this uplifting video! 🌺 🌺 🌺
For all of you wondering what’s powering them - they are riding the same open ocean swells that surfers ride when they come close to shore and break. The difference with the foils is that there is so little resistance that they are able to ride swells that are moving quickly and are not very steep.
I've e-foiled before, and I am not understanding how you guys are able to cover so much distance with so little pumping?! I need to learn this when I am in hawaii next!
I have _never_ heard of this sport until now and I'm fascinated by the mechanics of it. I'd love to model those wings and run some CFD on them to see how they generate lift and what performance improvements could be made.
This wouldn't be possible without waves. That's why they have to go downwind. If you're on calm waters you'd have to be pumping with you legs non-stop. You can see them riding the waves
@@jsmit9484 Thanks for your comment! (Cool! I had previously seen riders doing just that (constant pumping), and couldn't understand the riders here having looong cruising time. The small sail was even nicer! Too late for me now, but at least I know what fun it could have been. I'll have to have fun vicariously! Take care!)
🤙🏽 this video giving me flashbacks on my journeys through the Ka’iwi channel and Pailolo too. Na Wahine o Ke Kai 5x. Never a dull moment lots of mental thoughts tho. So awesome you guys did without escort boats. Just send um, one speed kine.. 😂 Solid. Mahalo fo Sharing🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽😂
the conditions at the end looked dreamy.. fast and clean..I don't do DW but kite and wing now. 65yo just started. From Alaska hard to be a waterperson LOL
That was incredible! I dream of doing that on kiteboard (I don't actually kiteboard) and I've sailed that on a 36' boat but you did it on a stick. I'm laughing at teh surfers in Waiks like " Where did you guys come form?"
I love your channel... Soon you all will be giving hydrofoils away. I live in Oxnard California, love to you send it to Channel Islands... if possible!
Hey. You changed from eagle x 800 to 900 for this downwind. Is it only for the take off with the paddle to make it less tiring? Or is it also for the ride itself? Can you explain the differences you feel between the 800 and 900. thx
Watching this at 2am on the upper west side of Manhattan. Didn’t know this even existed. Clearly, I have to go down the YT black hole on this. Guess I’m going into work late tomorrow
This is freaking amazing! Island to island on foils! So I don't understand, how do they keep going? What's providing the forward push? Whatever it is, it's very cool. Well done lads.
So no motor? What’s your average mph? Do you have to read the ocean and turn into certain areas to get more speed? Or can you just go in a straight line with the same effect?
Epic! All time! Wanna know what it felt like: Fear? Exhausting? Easier/harder than you thought? Did you guys take a break or one shot? You should send this in to Good Morning America or similar show! Mahalo!
Thank you! It was amazing. There’s so much energy in these channels and to get to do them without an escort really shows you how small you are. It’s really easy to get caught up in the mix when you’re racing and there’s other competitors and other boats around you . But when you’re solo, it’s a whole nother level of excitement and adrenaline. Pure concentration and pure flow state - extremely relaxing to be honest.
Dang so you’re saying I could just cruise after the ferry from NY to CT? Looks sick! If I weren’t rightfully scared of the ocean you’d probably catch me on the news… or maybe not cause I could totally cheat with our unused boat.
What is this witchcraft? I've seen kite and sail powered foiling, plus the more recent electric motor powered version. But this... I would not have thought it possible. Just how fast can you go?
that's really far... and would require a lot of prep and planning... I dont even like flying my plane over that much open water.. let alone a hydrofoil. i'm sure the difficulty in that is at least 1000x more than maui to molokai. kert. lanai hawaii.
So no motor? Just pump a few times and you will fly for how long? That looks insane. Have you ever crashed into a turtle or a shark or something that made you go flying head first? Tell me about it. Aloha. Im just freediving.
They are surfing the swells that travel downwind. The paddling and pumping help build or maintain speed as they catch swells or move between swells, most of the energy for the trip comes from the waves. This takes incredible skill and guts to ride this far.
