- A discussion on how the Foildrive assist can shorten the learning curve when learning to Downwind. Letting you ride smaller foils, smaller boards in lighter winds.
It is a cheat code to progress so much faster in my experience. I've been desperately trying to catch up to other people in my DW crew who are years ahead of me and FD has been helping me inch closer.

Good option - another way to decipher the matrix of reading bumps is to use a wing. Forcing yourself to use the wing as a foil-drive only, ie only to launch onto bumps and then flagging out. Once you can ride 5-10km flagged out you know you can do the same when paddling up.
Man that leg rope gives me the freaks, it keeps dropping under the tail and close to the foil drive.
Nice vid Dave. Started doing this last year on an 8' downwind board. You're dead right in that it teaches you all the other aspects of dwing except the paddle up. It also forces you to learn to stay high on the mast. Not sure I see the advantages of using a small board to learn if your ultimate goal is to transition to a paddle-only setup. I think it makes more sense to learn to use exactly the same gear you would use if you were learning to paddle up ie. biggest foil and dw board, unless of course you are going to stay with the FD/shortboard setup permanently (which is not a bad thing tbh). The other advantage of the bigger board is you can motor out to a distant wind-line using much less battery than a small board and thus use a smaller battery.The transition to the paddleup is a pain because you now have to go backwards in your enjoyment curve, maybe for a very long time. Having been on that curve for at least 6 months with patchy opportunities for learning I'm getting to the point where I'm thinking the foildrive is a long term solution for days below 20 knots as I really think you need that sort of wind to have a reasonable chance at a paddleup as a learner.
Really good assessment and good points made. Surf SUPing your DW setup is a good way to make sure you stay familiar with the bigger board. I jump between boards often enough that I can DW on the little board; get more experience in the bumps - then when I get back on DW board in the bumps it doesn’t take long to adjust my pump etc. to the big board. But for most people I think you’re right and I think I said this in the video that this isn’t for most people most they will use their big boards.
You just hit the nail with the hammer. Dominic also has touched on this topic as well - If you live at a place that has 10 knot average wind, down wind runs will be limited. Therefore having another tool to help learn and get you on foil can be very helpful. These conditions are quite common, so FD helps those living in lite wind locales

I seen a guy with my background learned to downwind foil in 11mins. I got a goal but at 52yrs old. I will be happy at 30mins! LOl@@davewestfoils

Tell me a hobby category where prices of anything have gone down? Prices of wind wings have almost doubled in two years and there is more competition then ever. So you'll be sitting waiting and hoping a long while.

Excellent video Dave, I came to the same conclusion that I'm going to learn to read the bumps quicker with the foil drive. I can paddle up my large foils on my 7'8" sultan ok but I'm still not staying on foil for more than about 500m at a time. If I've got to paddle up too many times on a run I'm going to end up gassed or only do really short runs. I've started to do some FD assist runs on my 5' 10" 90litre one downwind board that i was using for winging so I've started out doing 4 km bay runs in Norfolk bay Tasmania with a paddle as well. I have also enjoyed the added benifit of using a faster wing which seems to make it easier to keep going. I'm no where near your level but the FD is allowing me more time to practice. I still practice when I'm winging but the wing is hard to deal with when you want to change direction.
I'm a newb, doing it all myself and I know nothing other than TH-cam eBay Amazon and my own pure grit determination 😅 and I was thinking of trying this way to learn. And yes I did hear you say it's not for a beginner but I taught myself how to ride a onewheel 🥴🤷🏻
Im slapping a boost fin on a 38L & im 73kg 😂🤦🏻♂️ I was going to start on a 2395 front wing and yes a 100+ mast😉🤞🏻 eventually I'll get tired of going straight and slow 😂🤷🏻

I like it. One more tool to help with progression.
I thought flagging out a wing and reading bumps was the same thing. It's not. I can go forever flagged out but when I use an anchorman and drop my wing, there's such a big difference. When I paddle up, I still struggle to link swell for long distances. I think/agree having something like this would really accelerate the bump reading process and I'd probably do it with my DW board so that the pumping feels the same. Is @foildrive the only option at the moment? Or are there others to look at and evaluate as well.

Hi dave great video as usual, very informative.. Ive got 1099 and 899 arts riding a 6.1 Kalama E3 thinking of switching to Spitfires any recomendations. I about the same weight as you. Popped in and saw Amos today and the 6,2 sultan looks so good. Thats next on the wish list, looks like it covers all disiplines esp with the foil drive, one board quiver.
Spitfires are a deviation from the ART and much more like the HPS. SO might not be what you're after unless you're looking for more surfy foils. The ART Pros are coming - I have no idea when but they're fast. But much more technical than the ART and the Spitfires. If you were to straight jump across I'd get a 1030 & a 900 or 840.

the foil drive is way better if you put the battery in a back pack on your back, then the board feels the same as always

Depends on your board and mast height.
If you could only have one HiMod carbon mast,
and you wanted to do more/several disiplines, like winging, wave riding, jumping, pumping and downwinding,
would you choose the 90cm or the 82cm?

Hi Dave, great video! Is it possible to overtake/overhaul bumps with the spitfire 1100? get to the bump infront of you? I want to downwind little bumps in the dutch Northsea with handpaddles. I have the png 1150, but the 1150 is too slow for downwinding, I think. I am 65 kg. Which frontwing to buy: 1201 art pro, spitfire 1100 or png 1300? I have the original foildrive (not the big battery) and the 7`8`` Barracuda. I have no sup experience. thanks, mate.
It’s definitely easy to up and over bumps. 1201 and 1100 are both great choices. Go 1100 for turning 1201 for acceleration. 1300 will be too similar in my mind to the 1150
