Itchy Pitbull with allergies

  • *UPDATE* I unfortunately never got around to making a 2nd video about Leia. After I posted this, I ended up getting connected with a holistic vet, as well as a dermatologist. Nothing helped. Sadly, I had to say goodbye to Leia in March after she started having trouble walking and wouldn't eat/drink. I'm heartbroken. Again, the multiple vets I took her to couldn't give us a clear answer. I am so frustrated that the vets and all the medication they gave Leia did nothing and seemed to make the situation worse. If you are in this situation and you can afford it, please get your dog off of kibble, Apoquel, and get them tested by a dermatologist to see what they are truly allergic to (skip the blood test and do the Intradermal skin test). Don't waste your time playing around with different allergy meds and immunosuppressants. The medications are cheaper in the beginning, but you'll end up spending thousands in the long run. I also recommend the new book by Dr. Karen Becker: "The Forever Dog". Take care and hug your dog in honor of Leia.

My rescue pit was starving and had no hair left from scratching and licking. His ears and chin was thick with yeast infection. He stunk so bad. No amount of bathing helped with the stinch. The vet ran test. He suffered internal, external and food allergies and serious yeast infection in his ears. Expensive but worth it, injections, ear drops, daily apoquel and twice a week baths with prescribed medicated shampoos along with Salmon grain free food, daily benadryl and fish oil supplements, he can now sleep all night. His hair has grown back and he is so happy. And I can hug him without gagging. He is so "handsome". 😍

@Peace by Peace Living Bathing too much is bad for any dog. You're removing necessary oils to protect their skin. Please note, the twice a week bath I gave my dog was with prescribed medicated shampoo from the vet. Once a month bath is what is recommended.

First, I must tell you that you are an AMAZING human being for doing what you did & not allowing her to get put down or put in the wrong hands again, so God Bless U!! When I saw your video/the pic of her as I was scrolling, I couldnt believe it b/c it was the 1st time I saw another dog w/ the same allergy on the chin & around mouth area, that my Cane Corso has. I'm in the process now of trying to figure out what it's from & how to rectify it. For his paws, what has helped me tremendously was warm water w/ the gold antibacterial soap by dial. I swish his paws in it, spread each of the webbing so it gets in between & dry real good. That has dried up those open wounds on his Paws so they weren't sore/oozing & no longer red & inflamed. Give it a try, the dial soap, I think i pay $2 @ Dollar General for it.
    Good luck!!

Im in the same boat but havent had the allergy testing done. No matter what dog food i buy he never gets better. He needs a bath twice a week but is lucky to get one once a week. For the itchiness i have had some results with stinging nettle. It helps my itching too so im going to go back to adding it to his food. Last time i gave it to him i mixed turmeric with it and he refused to eat his food and i stopped giving him the stinging nettle because i got busy and i thought he didnt like it but it could of been the turmeric he didnt like; since it has helped me so much with my itching im going start giving him it again and see if he gets some relief. Ive never had a pitbull before him and ive never had a dog with this kind of issue. I love pitbulls but the skin allergy keeps me thinking never again will i get another one.

Any follow up to this video in regard to treatment? We have a Pitbull with all the same issues and have tried everything you have. Same medications, limited ingredient dog foods, zero grains, soaking paws in betadine etc etc. His poor paws will not clear up no matter what we do. His skin condition was much worse when we first adopted him from the shelter....it's just his paws now. He's 2.

My pitbull was on apoquel but after reading about how it suppresses their immune system, I wanted to get her off it asap. We switched her the The Honest Kitchen limited ingredient fish recipe. We couldn't tell if it was seasonal or food so we tried everything. We bought doggie boots off Amazon and we put them on every time we would go outside. Her paws would get very red and break out in hives badly. I also give her colostrum on an empty stomach and bee pollen in her food (Wholistic pet organics). After about a month, she is now healed and no longer have to put her boots on because her immune system is back to normal and can do as it should. It has been a long, hard process but so worth it! We also have the mudbuster and use a little bit of Richards organics anti bacterial shampoo in there, add water, amazing! I am so very happy she doesn't have to take Apoquel anymore. When she would break out in hives and rashes with scabs, we would give her a bath with Douxo shampoo (Chewy), twice a week and it worked like a charm for her.

I have a black pit tie w white socks. He is 3 this year.. I have never seen the allergies affect him so badly. I am going to try ur solution. I had just made an appt for prednisone because I am beside myself. He rubs his muzzle on cinder blocks and scraped fur and skin off. He does this to relieve the itching. He’s constantly biting his paws and he is losing his fur around his face and in his armpits

@@hooked4life64 Yea, that's how my girl was too. I would recommend to start with the shampoo to give fast relief then work on solving the underlying conditions (food allergy or environmental). The shampoo is a little pricey but it has been the only shampoo to give her relief from itching. It also leaves a pertective barrier on the skin to relieve itching for a few days! Hope this helps!

@@hooked4life64 It's so sad to see our dogs suffer and not know what to do. I recently took Leia to a dermatologist and she thinks she may have an autoimmune disease, which makes sense why changing Leia's diet and cleaning her often didn't make too much of a difference. I hope you find some answers for your pittie. I normally soak Leia's paws in some cold water with a squirt of providone iodine (I get it at CVS) until it's an iced tea color. I'll soak it for 2-3 minutes and then dry in between her paws really well. Also, if you think it's seasonal allergies from pollen, dust, weeds, etc., you may be able to find a dermatologist to do an intradermal skin test. It's expensive but saves you lots of money in the long run. When you get the results back, the dermatologist can make a custom made vile of what your dog's allergic to and then every day you put a drop of the antigens in your dogs mouth until they build up an immunity.

I think I found something that is working for my dog allergies. She has seasonal allergies snd had a bad breakout.
Shapley’s original M-T-G Conditioner. I saw a video using this product in’s Pitbull and the results looked amazing. It is much cheaper online but I did not want to wait to try it. I have not given her Benadryl since yesterday am. She has not been
Licking or scratching. My dog looks so much more comfortable. I was getting ready to put her back on Prednisone to get relief. Coconut oil is helping with super crusty skin by her face.
I also give her Salmon Oil for Omega 3 fatty acids. I give probiotics too. I would say the biggest improvement came from M-T-G oil.
