Co-founder of Twosheep here! Dandy got to see under the hood a bit earlier than most, and we actually added some specific features and changes just off his recommendation! As tempted as I am to mention the issues I think Colonist has, since we definitely took inspiration from places we felt they were lacking, Twosheep is really about taking the game to the next level. We have full-game playback, house rules, customisation, free 5-6,7-8, Seafarers and you can play all of that on any custom map of your choice or made by the community! We have a lot planned to elevate the experience, with loads of cosmetics for all of your game pieces and hexes, and tournament integration, among other things (puzzles, free CK, ranked, quests, etc etc etc). Stay tuned!
As soon as Twosheep is playing smoothly I will switch immediately and I will be not alone lol. Hope there will be ranked game too as unranked has so many non games with people leaving and trolling.
where there be a way to collect data from games. Specifically if i wanted to conduct today to Sources cards that were played, who won with largest army. long road... etc
Don't get dragged too deep into that feature list without having a scalable solution for keeping cheaters and bad behaviour out of the game. That alone would convert a ton of people from Colonist.
yes since we store every game played, you can manually get that data, but deeper data analysis/access might be some we do limit access to for free.@@bathingapp891
Respectfully Dandy, I think you have the read wrong on the importance of the Discord community. In product terms, your Discorders are your 'highly engaged users'. It doesn't matter how large the %, it matters that they care about the game so much they take time out to feed back, etc. To a designer or product manager, having an active community to validate ideas with is gold. It helps concentrate your dev efforts on product changes that hit the mark with your players. Like good hand management, it's an efficient use of your time and resources. Failing to properly engage is a product sin because if you turn your biggest cheerleaders into your biggest haters you have killed one of your biggest growth drivers in terms of product discovery (innovation), idea/prototype validation, and the referral growth loop (join-enjoy-refer) which for a multiplayer game is really important.
There can be multiple competing online Catan platforms because of one court ruling that said game mechanics can't be owned. Frankly a great ruling that hasn't hurt the output of new games at all. I wish IP law were more like that in other creative areas.
This is an old vid and my first comment so I don’t really expect a response but I have question. At 8:17 why did you play to the 3 ore 3:1 and not the 4 11 3:1? Better ore plus wood and same port, no? Doesn’t seem worth defending either if you want both. Just curious! I’ve just got into catan and I’m feeling super passionate about it. I feel like I’ve watched almost all of your videos at this point so I really appreciate the content.
I just found out about 2sheep in this video, so my knowledge is extremely limited, but I feel the main concern will be money. I think F2P games are fantastic for any community, but the expectation to not make any monetization is flawed. You have to pay for servers, maintenance, developers, etc. Just looking at 2 sheep I enjoy the interface of Catan more right now
we are just 4 months into development! we definitely have a monetisation plan, but i don't believe paywalling CK or access to a small set of maps is the way to go. Would rather make those free (they are) and introduce new features and aspects that can be monetised. Can't give away too much yet but currently everything is free.
@@dailydavbav Wow, a developer who actually engages with the community. That’s pretty neat… I did more research and it looks like you guys have are gaining a large following behind your brand. Don’t take my criticism too personally because I know it’s still in beta and Im a nobody. I think the color vibrancy seen in colonist keeps me more engaged, and I think I enjoy the idea of seeing each individual card type instead of a number. Maybe just aesthetically pleasing as a player. Keep putting in the work and I’ll give it a try again soon!
@@Slindyy Yeah I've been a part of this community for over 2 years, organising and competing in events, making content, you might see a wild Dandy appear in a few of my older videos too! So, it really was a direct step from hearing so much about what people want from this game to starting Twosheep with all of that in mind :) Your feedback is valid and definitely matters. Color balance is something we are currently brainstorming actually, among other things, so stay tuned!
There's absolutely no way colonist has 1mil unique monthly users. It has to be a lie or there are lots of guys creating a new guest user everytime they play
I'll gladly use two sheeps. Colonist won't let me play with an adblocker so I haven't played in months. You want to force me to watch ads then I just won't play.
hello dandy love your videos.. im new to catan and i ve been playing a lot i just came from a game that 12 was acting like a 6,8 it was insane and i keep seeing this unbalanced randomness. my thoughts as a new player, this is more of a bingo than "Strategy" game whats the point analysing and choosing your position on the board when you can have so whacky games
Luck plays a significant role, like a lot of games with a random element, but you can still play higher percentage plays and there is a lot of strategic nuances which can give you an edhge. It can't gaurantee wins every time but you will win more often in the long run. This is much like other games, like poker for example. It will seem less whacky and random as you get better and understand more of the game.
At 8:20, why drop the road to the 3 ore instead to the 11 4? Both are a 3:1 port and with the 11 4 you get better production and better road capabilities
I think that’s certainly a play. I like spicing up the 3 in that situation since the next 3 would likely be another next city. I wouldn’t want to double up the 4 ore, have it over-roll, and it clogs up my hand with ore and no wheat.
Moderation is a serious problem on colonist, I personally reported people being very rude and speaking proper S**T in chat, I mean, things that a kid could really be shocked for. The website did not ban the account.
I really don’t think it’s as bad as people think. Online gaming will always have a mix of players and personalities. I went to college during the Modern Warfare 2/3 days and dealt with the most toxic lobbies you could imagine. Playing a board game just doesn’t compare at this point 🤣
8:45 The problem is that Colonist is forcing ads and paid tiers. I'm curious if Catan Studios / Kosmos could shut down these platforms at any time. It's one thing to have a free community platform, but it's another to profit off it when they didn't create Catan.
1) game mechanics can't be copyrighted, if they could it woulda been shut down years ago 2) the servers and engineers required to run a million user app are very expensive
What seanfinnell1 said. They might not have created Catan, but they did create the entire online platform that allows people to play it, by themselves. It's their platform, their servers, and game mechanics can't be copyrighted. And even if they could, I'm guessing the owner of Catan's copyright wouldn't bother because platforms like these help the game's popularity.
@@sean755this just shows how compleatly fucked up the copyright system is with for example composers having copyright 70(!) years after death and game designers having none at all.

Colonist doesn't save their game data for whatever reason. I asked them so I could train an AI on the data and they were just like, NOPE.

Theres always innovation coming along. Not so long ago it was colonist the new boy on the block challenging CU
Did this game have both a player named Orang, as black AND NotOrange as Orange?
Fun game. And also lovely cat.
Suggestion: drinking game on stream for the special 10k subs in yt stream 😂
