cindy understands the point of romance 😭 i just wanna read about a man pining and obsessing (affectionate) and head over heels for someone 😭 if i wanted a realistic guy i would join a dating app 😭
Ok but the girls in Bunny saying that Samatha isn’t deep cause she’s poor and has trauma was like super savage and I was more mean girls stories did that
Bunny was so fun, I've encountered a lot of "art school girlies'' who haven't quite shaken off the teens yet and that book captured them perfectly. Was also a GOOD horror as well, which is rare for this kind of satirical horror- I actually found it decently unsettling in a "binge read late at night" way
The main character of "The Maid" is 100% autistic, I am as well so I really enjoyed listening to it! People tend to think we're stupid but we just communicate and see the world differently. Another book with a good autistic lead is "The Good Sister" and I highly recommend it!
Mean Girls being reframed as a horror story is giving Jennifer's Body and Scream vibes and I really hope that happens somehow. Also love the places you are travelling around
re: with Bunny, firstly my name is Samantha so that added another layer of creepy vibes to my reading experience. Also as someone who did creative writing workshops in undergrad I really liked the satirical take on how people talk out of their ass to sound smart and in the know during workshop which just makes the whole thing even more intimidating and esoteric feeling. I want to read more books set in Grad school!
I won't spoil this but with Bunny, think back on the bus scene with the old woman. I found my original read really underwhelming but as soon as I discovered the subtext of that scene, everything started coming together. As far as I know, nothing has been confirmed by the author, but mental health, an unreliable narrator, and the illness mentioned in that particular scene might change your perspective of the story. It definitely changed my rating for the book.
This Time Next Year was a fun English romance! I like how the book showed that the daughter got her self fulfilling negativity from her mother. If Quinn was too much like a real man, Minnie's mother was too much like a real mother. The fact that she doesn't apologize, and just says "they don't give you a manual on how to be a parent" just rings so true.
Every time there's a clique vs mc+best friend trope, it makes the characters juvenile in my eyes. like, you're literally in college/ grad school. how do you have any time for petty fights? when i was in college we were all just trying to survive
im sure there are petty fights in college and even adulthood too, but the way they speak was so juvenile that i was like does anyone over the age of 18 even talk like this LOL
The men in straight romances need to be head over heels obsessed with the mc (in a cute way not a creepy way) or else I'm judging the mc's taste in men too much to actually enjoy the quality of the book
Hey Cindy! Just wanted to share that I met the author of Bunny at an event and thought of your video. (Turns out, she has an MFA and PhD, and is currently teaching at a university.) I asked her about a question my reader "friend" had regarding why the grad students in the book are portrayed like high school mean girls. She was witty and quick with her response: 'Because grad students are just like that!' She then explained that she used the high school mean girl trope to make fun of grad student culture.
I had fun reading The Maid, but as an autistic person, I think it’s total BS for the author to not just say the character is autistic. Authors, producers, etc etc try to say “we don’t want label them” or “we don’t want to alienate the viewers” but all that does is further stigmatize autism and deprive people of role models in media. Extracting the “quirks” but not acknowledging the community, neurodiversity in general, etc, just really annoys me. But I still liked the book and Mollys character! I like most autistic-coded characters in modern media.
that is totally valid! i feel like just saying molly is autistic wouldnt have alienated readers at all, so i wonder why the author didnt just say so. maybe she didnt think molly would have gone out of her way to be diagnosed?
Your opinion about guys in straight romance books is so true! Like if he's not pining and head over heels, I'm not even going to bother to care about the couple LOL
I love the combo of book discussion and vlog! Our reading tastes rarely cross, but I find your discussions always interesting or entertaining nonetheless. Sometimes it feels like I'm eavesdropping on my neighbors gossip when it's absolutely NONE of my business. Love it. 😂
(Spoilers) I just finished Bunny and I remember spending the majority of the book thinking “Samantha is gay, this entire book is so queer coded ugh I can’t give this more than 3 stars because it’s not explicitly gay enough” and then the plot twist and the ending happened I was like “Oh! Oh!! Omg it WAS gay ❤ 4 stars then”
I just finished the maid today actually and I am autistic. I enjoyed the book even though I've seen some people don't. Some of what Molly does I find relatable to either myself or other people I know. My biggest issue is that it is never said she's autistic. I went into the book thinking it was clear she was but its just heavily implied. Maybe it was a creative choice but sometimes the media "represents" autistics by just skirting around it. I hope you do a full review once you finish!
yea i agree, so much media doesnt explicitly state a character has autism, but maybe those characters just havent been diagnosed? i dunno if the main character in maid would have gone out of her way to inquire about it
Your reading vlogs made me start reading again after years of not. I’m not as fast of a reader as you are, given I’m reading A Little Life now and I’ve calculated it will take me 40 days to finish… BUT I’m still trying to read a minimum of 12 books this year, and let’s face it, 814 pages is a long book to start off with, but I’m making it work, and I’ve been very consistent with reading it daily for the last 22 days. Right around the 50% mark now. Will definitely read a shorter book after this to supplement the lost time from reading such a long book
excuse this rambling parenthetical i only recently came across your channel and i can honestly say watching your videos has given me immense joy why are you actually the funniest person in the entire world wide web just thank you for being and bringing light okay bye
when you were talking about the scene of the protagonist in the maid being interrogated by the police, it reminded me so so much of this very similar scene in the book “everyone in this room will someday be dead.” it’s a literary fiction, which also features a very autistic coded protagonist who becomes a suspect of this murder mystery subplot. she gets very existential at times and she does the same thing of unintentionally roasting smb or being very witty. she is also a lesbian who struggles with anxiety so ya know, #relatable ✨ and the book had the right balance of funny, existential and heartwarming. it was one of my fav reads of this month so i’d recommend you check it out!
As someone in an undergrad writing program full of wealthy kids I find some parts of Bunny funny when it comes to depicting the cliques that form during workshops. Also I have met girls just like that and it shows how some writing classes imposed the same standards that you think you form into the same group who woul practice the same techniques and stuff so I guess that’s probably where the author gets cult inspo. Although my fascination with the book kinda stops there since I think it was kind of going for shock or “oooh wow so weird” value more than trying to tell a clear story. I do see the camp potential hope the book leaned more into that but I guess it wanted to be so mysterious and unusual that it came of as vague and uneventful.
yea i rly liked all the classroom scenes where the girls would give "critiques" bc it was all pretentious nonsense and i could tell came from a real experience LOL i do agree it got too lost in weirdness tho
@@withcindy Yeah a good move to go anytime other than summer because summers there are BRUTAL. Taiwan is actually pretty nice during winter and fall. I used to work with a woman named Minnie Cooper. She even had one... Of course she was much older when the cars came out, so it wasn't traumatizing for her.
The "we read jane eyre too" just cracked me up😂 like is just one simple line but it encapsulates the whole "not like other girls" so much. It conveys so much in just one sentence. I'd like to have like a shirt like that honestly. I definetely remember that before tiktok, a whole group of readers looked down on people who read like 50 shades of grey. And yes, speaking of character development, plot, narrative construction it is in fact mediocre. But liking the book doesn't make someone dumb. Even if the book itself is really, really dumb. Its like the people who don't watch tv and they brag about it all the time like... You don't get a prize, Sheron, chill out. You're not better than anyone. Like I AM a person who doesn't watch tv at all, i don't even HAVE a tv but there's shitty things everywhere. Not just on tv. And there's a lot of good things in there too. Anyway. Going back to what i was saying: its really crazy that people get to GRAD SCHOOL with that kind of behaviour and opinions. Like, we should stop it at 14 years old and after that pretend it never happened because is seriously so embarassing. ✨you may be poor but you're just as mediocre as we are✨
Your description of Bunny was giving me more Heathers vibes than Mean Girls. I definitely recommend that movie! It's a dark comedy from the 80s that satirizes hot girl cliques and teen drama.
it made me so glad you enjoyed bunny but i can understand why you feel the way you do! fun fact: the author used her experienced being bullied in a similar MFA program for bunny so that could be why it feels ~off.

I kind of had the same feelings about Bunny. I know everyone really loves that book, and I was sad I didn't love it as much. It's certainly weird, but I was left feeling like the weirdness got away from the point

Watching your mid-way book review of The Maid is hilarious knowing the twists. You get so close to figuring it out but think you’re just goofing off. As for her not having as much agency as she should have had, I think that’s what the final twist was all about. The reveal that she’s had agency this whole time, she’s been controlling the narrative from the start to get the outcome she wanted and she succeeded in that. She got in over her head a couple times and needed help, which is good, part of being disabled is acknowledging and accepting that you need help, but she’s ultimately the reason everything ended as it did.
Mean Girls meets a horror movie. I. Am. Here. For. That. Cindy. Hahahaha. I enjoyed The Maid a lot. Thanks for taking us on your travels with you. All the food looked amazing, I wanted ALL of it.
@withcindy having an English accent 24/7 isn't all it's cracked up to be. Every t is a glottal stop. I genuinely say "bo'le o' wa'er" instead of "bottle of water", like I'm some kind of living meme.
i was a lil hopeful when she got snapped out of the cult running into her best friend again, and i wanted to see some more female friendship and exploration around that, but i think the book got a lil too caught up in the "weirdness" than cohesion
Bunny is definitely giving me some Heathers vibes‼️ I love all the scenery and the food, especially 🧇‼️ Yeah I feel the same way about romance like right now I’m reading Highly Suspicious & Unfairly Cute which has a fair amount of pinning and the tension between the leads is totally palpable‼️ The Maid does sound interesting especially because of your theory on Molly Gray being autistic, so I might have to pick it up to see what my perspective is. Ps: I finished Legends & Lattes it was wonderful so I highly recommend it if your looking something cozy and sapphic‼️ I’m almost done with The Death of Jane Lawerence which becoming more and more harrowing‼️Last but not least I’m almost done with Heartstopper volume 2, if all goes well I might finish the whole series this month?‼️
ooo i might read highly suspicious & unfairly cute so that's good that you're enjoying it!! do u think the death of jane lawrence is worth the read? it's still on my TBR based on ur comment from last time. my gf is also reading heartstopper right now too!

11 birthdays starts out similarly to this time next year actually!! It’s a kid’s book but it’s super cute and sweet and starts out with the boy and girl being born on the same day in the same hospital and then a year later “accidentally” sharing their first birthday party (set up by a third party wanting them to be friends) and they spend their next few birthdays today until a misunderstanding happens and they finally have to talk to each other about it when some crazy shit starts happening 😂 I’m bad at descriptions but if you haven’t read it I promise it’s a super cute book about friendship and misunderstandings

was literally asking myself when will you upload again and here you are
u manifested this!!
The dream I have is to one day travel, and I’ve always loved your vlogs because between reading books and that aspect, I absolutely adore them. Someday I hope to live out that dream, just like you do. ❤
im confident u will!! do u have a dream destination?
@@withcindy Not sure, somewhere in Europe would be fun, also maybe Tokoyo or somewhere out East.
omg they all look so good. glad you had a great time
Thank you!!
scrambling to make popcorn so i can enjoy a cindy vid with a snack (besides cindy herself)
Love that! what kinda popcorn are u eating?
Glad you enjoyed it!! more to come from taiwan
If you want mean girls meets the exorcist, highly highly recommend the Merciless by Danielle Vega. Super fun and fucked up high school horror!
@@katiehogan8196 oooh thanks!
loved the ad!!
thank u!! it does look like a fun lil game hehe
I read another book by Sophie Cousens in April called The Good Part. I think you will like it better than Same Time Next Year.❤
Girl you are the b0mb, traveling the world and taking us along. 🤜🏼🤛🏽
glad to bring yall along with me!!
you slayed the british accent
omg i wish i could pull it off 24/7
@withcindy having an English accent 24/7 isn't all it's cracked up to be. Every t is a glottal stop. I genuinely say "bo'le o' wa'er" instead of "bottle of water", like I'm some kind of living meme.
23 minute cindy sanctioned homework break 💓
see u in paris bb
I agree with you about Bunny. The idea is cool but the execution...
i was a lil hopeful when she got snapped out of the cult running into her best friend again, and i wanted to see some more female friendship and exploration around that, but i think the book got a lil too caught up in the "weirdness" than cohesion
On an unrelated note the food and drink at Brown Cafe looks so fuckin good I would’ve cried 😭
dude it REALLY WAS i visited there twice
I took 2 books with me to read and I read neither of them. I was too busy living in the moment and also on my phone.
which books?
@@withcindy ‘The Sleeping Beauty Murder’ and ‘Into The Water’.
@@withcindy The Death of a Jane Lawerence is a wild ride‼First Jane decides to go into a marriage of convenience to Dr. Lawerence who she has potential chemistry. However it turns out Dr. Lawerence has a lot of secrets, so the big question is their budding romance enough to save themselves?‼
been craving a new cindy video!!👩🍳
Hope you enjoy!
Beautiful locations!
Glad you like them! they were gorgeous
January passed me by and I couldn’t manage to read a book. I should’ve just grabbed a book and started reading it.
thats okay!! take ur time
21:19 Stunning visuals btw 👏🏽
thank u!! it's always fun slapping on text lol
I think Bunny should have been a novella that ended after Part 1. I loved how Part 1 concluded but didn’t think the rest of the book held up.
True! I feel like the book got too caught up in its own weirdness that it lost cohesion
11 birthdays starts out similarly to this time next year actually!! It’s a kid’s book but it’s super cute and sweet and starts out with the boy and girl being born on the same day in the same hospital and then a year later “accidentally” sharing their first birthday party (set up by a third party wanting them to be friends) and they spend their next few birthdays today until a misunderstanding happens and they finally have to talk to each other about it when some crazy shit starts happening 😂 I’m bad at descriptions but if you haven’t read it I promise it’s a super cute book about friendship and misunderstandings
cindy you're making me hungry with all the food in this video
Sis I need you to read Colleen Hoover books and do a video on them. I hear people absolutely roast them and then others praise the hell out of them and I don't wanna read them before watching your video about them!!!
I'm considering reading one this year!
@@withcindy Do it! Some people loved the book "Verity" but it seems to be fucked up so I feel like your video about it would be entertaining for us lmao, and there's her most popular one "It Ends with Us" that's getting a movie adaptation starring Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, Jack Edwards praised it but I really wanna hear what you thought.
WHERE DID YOU GET THE JATP SHIRT?????
Cindy video! Today is a good day 😊
Hope you enjoy it!
Ahhh!! I love your outfit in the thumbnail
thank u! it's my go-to romper lol
my online bestfriend is from singapore, she came to my country this nov, i promised to visit hers too someday… hope you had fun in sg!!
oooh i hope u enjoy singapore when u visit!!
YOU WERE IN SINGAPORE??? OMG WHAT A SMALL WORLD CINDY!
That’s a lot of traveling. Is it for work? All the food looks great and made me crave some beef noodle soup. Just got back from night shift at the hospital and watched this while having a sandwich for breakfast
i was on vacation and figured it takes forever to travel to asia so might as well stay longer! ooo what kind of sandwich was it? i also ate a vietnamese sandwich for dinner just now
cindy you're in taiwan and i didn't even know 😭 i would've done a meet-cute where i "accidentally" bump into you in sushiro tho 😭😭
omg a meet-cute in a sushiro where we accidentally get each other's sushi plates
I only saw the intro and clicked the like button 😂❤
Have you seen the movie Heathers? It's like mean girls in a way, but takes a really dark turn. The way you're describing Bunny is giving me Heathers vibes.
i think this book prob use heathers as a comp!
*talking about Bunny*: “i get the sense that this book is for hot girls. it is a satire of the type of cliques that hot girls are in and so therefore hot girls would really love this shit. it wasn’t for me,” i laughed so hard at that description bc its true. laughed even harder at the, “it wasn’t for me.”
True!!! Anyway my throat is bleeding, what should I do..?
WHAT!!
OMG I think that Ya Kun coffee shop was where I used to go to with my colleagues when I was working back home in SG #nostalgia
Also - 'if he's not a simp for you you gotta get out of there' -> no truer words have been spoken WRT straight relationships
That place was so good and cheap, I love their fluffy bread. When I looked at other cafes they didn't have the same bread, so I guess that one was one of a kind
It will probably have to be a local style cafe which would have a similar menu to the ya kun chain cafes! Glad you liked it :)
that hotel looks so cute
which one? :3
So happy to see love and pies sponsoring you because it’s the only game I can actually enjoy 😂😂😂
omg hahaha it makes me wanna eat pies now
Samantha's best friend is........ spoiler........ Her creation. That's my take anyway.
dying for the julie and the phantoms shirt
they deserved a 2nd season
5:40. Aye yooo; I need that music, ma. Gon up it, let me get that 😅 it’s like what LA Noir would look like at a rave while in the Witness Protection Program 12:12. I wasn’t ready. You’re a joint: sincerely want both tracks and any associated/background information ℹ️ or story.
not me playing Love & Pies while watching this video lol
I was in Bangkok and got confused with the airports too and ended up in the wrong airport and missed my flight. Did you also miss your flight from Bangkok? 😂
YES I DID omg not us both making the same mistake
@@withcindy 😂😂
A city does not need two airports
I loved this reading vlog!! I’ve been wanting to read Bunny for a while but I’m afraid LOL idk also Singapore looks so pretty 😍 and I hope you enjoyed Taiwan! Must have been a nice break from all the heat 😂
omg yes i was dying from the humidity in thailand and singapore so taiwan was so much cooler in comparison that i even got cold sometimes LOL
cindy pls read a colleen hoover book i wanna know ur thoughts
i will this year
