As a war survivor who also read As Long as the Lemon Trees Grow, I would personally like to add that in the war life is so bleak, clinging to imagery of Miyazaki full of color and life is very natural. His films also depict simple joy of peaceful life, something that in such moment feels non existent. In short, it's a nice little reference.
At this point, I really appreciate the getting into details about few books. I think it’s quite interesting because it’s tricky to summarise without it feeling disjointed.

Another thing on Miyazaki being anti-war and the book that adds another layer is, i cant remember if he said this himself or if it is an interpretation, but Howl's moving castle's anti-war sentiment was likely inspired by the Iraq war happening at the time. He also did not attend the oscars (when spirited away was nominated) because of this hatred towards the war and wars in general. I love Miyazaki films and messages omg😭

if you like books about anti-war and anti-colonialism I highly recommend the book Battle Royale by Koushun Takami but to be fair it was written in the very late 90s (1999) and I know this video is about new books you read but Its still good because it deal with the lasting effects of WW2 and the extreme denial of Japanese war crimes within the government and because it deals with an alternate WW2 history, also in the 2000s movie adaption by Kinji Fukusaku actually wanted to come across as very anti-war because he had lived through WW2 as a kid working in a factory and when it was bomb all the child workers piled up on each other when they were escaping the factory and blamed the adults that forced them into their war

It's very interesting hearing you talk about the dilemma that these characters were having about whether to leave or not. I'm russian and ever since the war started people all around me have been having these conversations. Many of the people i know left, millions of people left the country. And there's definitely this argument going on between the people who left and the people who stayed about what's the right thing to do. This conversation doesn't concern me however lol because only the privileged can leave in the first place, I'm disabled and poor so leaving isn't possible for me rn anyway.

These days, most romance stories are written with unrealistic scenarios just to get the 2 characters to the "romance" action... which is so unsatisfying and doesn't feel deserved 😕 A main story plot that isn't about the relationship could help these stories a lot

My husband and I went there when we visited New Orleans last year based on a recommendation from our Lift driver. I agree the food was delicious. Another great place is Daisy Dukes for Breakfast (I still dream about their Shrimp 'n Grits).

Given than Hayao Miyazaki was born in 1941, and the II World war ended in 1945, I highly doubt that he remembers enough of it to say he “grew up” during the war. It’s definitely one of the central themes in his work, but mostly I think just as a disturbance to normality.

I've been wanting to read the The American Roommate Experiment since I love (like now that I realize that the MMC & FMC didn't have much personality but I liked the slow burn, it is the slowest burn to slowest burn hahaha) the author's debut novel, The Spanish Love Deception. And once again I am rethinking my choice because of your influence 😭 if this is what I'm reading to after expecting so much (the writing is better this time and the characters have much more personality) I would sell my copy 😂

Given than Hayao Miyazaki was born in 1941, and the II World war ended in 1945, I highly doubt that he remembers enough of it to say he “grew up” during the war. It’s definitely one of the central themes in his work, but mostly I think just as a disturbance to normality.
